Colourful!.......2005-06-16
This interpretation is a perfect match to Savall's equally beautiful Art of the Fugue. Here you find even more variety in the blend of instruments. I am not going to have only one version of this music and my first recommendation is Münchinger's more emotional recording on Decca. When it comes to colourful instrumentation, however, Savall is the winner, and the direction & playing needs no justification, it is simply wonderful, even if I doubt this folk music style reflects the spirit of the baroque era. The king's theme must have been very popular during the 18th century; you find it even in the song "Gråt Fader Berg" by the Swedish minstrel Carl Michael Bellman (1740-95).

Oddly dispirited and square.......2005-09-24
These lushly romantic, even shmaltzy arrangements of Bach for orchestra--the kind made famous by Stokowski when conducting was a glamorous Hollywood profession--don't suit Salonen at all. By temperament he is all but anti-romantic, a modernist through and through. So these performances, despite being well played and in gorgeous sound, are lifeless. Stick with Stokowski all the way.
A Great Bach Recording.......2001-03-22
Tis is a collection of some of the best music suited for orchestra. Most of these works were originally for harpsichord and organ. They are played with such grace and elegance by L.A.P. Salonen does a fantastic job conducting. Thede pieces were brillantly arranged by the likes of Stokowsky, Webern, Mahler, Elgar, etc. These are among the most brilliant musicians ever. They are fantastic. The Tocatta and Fugue in d is powerful. The elegance of the suites are matched by nothing. The Air is so moving. The flutist is wonderful. This is an all around great c.d. for any Bach fan.
Excellent recording...if transcriptions appeal to you.......2000-12-15
With all the new and exciting contemporary works that the LA Phil is presenting (not to mention the rethinking of some of the "old masters") I wonder why Salonen elected to put this selection on disc. The orchestra plays beautifully, the sound is elegant, but there is something that aproaches pedantic about this. Perhaps Salonen wants to exercise some of the influences on his own composing. Or perhaps this is an homage to the old tradition of creating various arrangements of well known music for a variety of ensembles. It is valuable as a curiosity, but it is doubtful that it will be one of your frequently played recordings. Why not Stucky or Lieberson or Reich or even the Gorecki 2nd Symphony instead.......?
Back to Bach (Via Philadelphia).......2000-10-11
Vulgarian and Neanderthal throwback that I am, I love this stuff, inordinantly. I think Stokowski a genius and precisely for his Bachwerk, his "arrangements" of the Leipzig master's keyboard compositions for full modern symphony orchestra. But Stoki labored in good company, for, as Esa-Pekka Salonen's new Sony anthology with the L.A. Philharmonic shows, Gustav Mahler, Sir Edward Elgar, Arnold Schoenberg, and Anton Webern inter alia all put their able hands to updating and amplifying Bach for a dynamo age. (As a matter of fact, Leonard Slatkin has recorded a similar, but even more variegated, CD, with the BBC Philharmonic, for Chandos.) We begin with Stoki's most famous (or infamous) transcription, the D-Minor Toccata and Fugue, made doubly notorious through its role as a kind of overture in the Disney film "Fantasia." Salonen competes with several recorded versions, going back to the late 1920s, with Stoki himself at the helm of the Philadelphia and other orchestras. He has, I believe, made the decision to do it the way Stoki did it, and the result is satisfying. (That is to say, technicolor, over-the-top, and cinematically glittering.) Next up? Elgar's miraculously pompous and circumstantial reworking of the Fantasy and Fugue in C-Minor (also on Slatkin's Chandos CD). Yep. Sounds like the First Symphony or one of those processionals. Relish it. Glory in it. Dann kommt ja Herr Webern, with his sound-coloristic treatment of the Ricercar from "A Musical Offering." Less grand, it is, than Elgar, but uncanny and hence welcome as a change of pace. In Arnold Schoenberg's hyper-romantic rethinking, the "Ste. Anne" Prelude and Fugue becomes a vast two-movement symphony, with the same orchestral palette as his own "Pelleas und Melisande" or "Gurrelieder." Stoki now makes another appearance, with his version of the "Little" Fugue in G Minor. At last, Gustav Mahler comes up to the plate with his arrangment of selections from the orchestral suites. Der "Gustl" offers perhaps the tamest stuff here, but it's still plenty meaty fare. Gimme more! I remember, for example, a mid-1970s LP of Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphians in arrangements of nothing but the fugues. There were eight of `em, as I recall. Then there was the Columbia LP of the London Symphonic Wind Ensemble doing Bach as Berlioz might have done him when he was writing the Symphonie Funebre et Triomphale. And is there a billionaire out there who will commission some needy living composers to orchestrate the Preludes and Fugues of that other contrapuntal master, Dmitri Shostakovich? Meanwhile, I'll keep playing the lottery.
Superb Salonen, Magnificent Bach plus.......2000-09-10
Esa-Pekka Salonen is given to eccentric and idiosyncratic readings of scores, not always to their disadvantage. This selectionof transcriptions of Bach works by other composers and conductors is by its very nature odd-ball, and Salonen makes the most of it. He is particularly effective with Elgar's interpretation of the fantasy and Fugue in C Minor.
This is not a recording for Bach purists but for those who enjoy the sounds of a fleshed-out orchestra under the control of a masterful Romaticist. I give it five stars and a bullet and Salonen a hearty clap on the back for a job well done.

Perhaps the Best Bach Orchestration EVER.......2005-07-31
(Note Bene: If you are new to The Musical Offering, as I was before purchasing this recording, read the book "Evening in the Palace of Reason" to learn the inside story of this fascinating work. As well as a dio biography with alternating chapters on Bach and Frederich the Great (whose motives for instigating this work, as the author claims, may have been suspect and bordering on the sadistic, as was Frederich's wont), the author gives an invaluable insight on the inner workings of this piece and what Bach may have been truly trying to communicate in it. If reading about Bach's life bores you, skip those chapters. The book is well worth it regardless. (Frederich's life was both more eventful and profoundly more disturbing.))
In 1949-50, Igor Marketvitch rearraned some of the canons in this fascinating work of Bach's to form them into a theme-and-variations movement and orchestrated the whole piece for antiphonal strings, cor anglais, bassoon, flute and harpsichord. The trio sonata, which Bach wrote with Frederich the Great's prowess on the flute in mind, is left as an instrumental piece for flute, solo violin and harpsichord after an introductory for foll strings. The Ricercar for three voices, which Bach improvised for Frederich on a theme the monarch provided and may have been intended to be deliberately impossible for Bach to treat in his polyphonic style, is an opening movement and the Ricercar for six voices, which Frederich also requested but Bach wrote later, realizing doing so on the sxpot was far above even his improvisatory powers, is used as the finale for the whole work.
Christopher Lyndon-Gee states in the notes state that Nadia Boulanger, Marketvitch's teacher, completed the harpsuchord part for Markevitch's fellow student Dinu Lipatti to play but Lipatti died before Boulanger was finished. Lyndon-Gee complains that this keyboard part is anachronistic due to its being overly
pianistic but it works perfectly fine for me as a consort for the
other two instrumentalists.
The whole arrangement is extremely tasteful, much lighter in overall approach than most Bach orchestral arrangements while adding color and texture. The effect is like seeing a set of expert watercolors instead of the the bright oils of Stokowski et al. Lyndon-Gee writes that Markevitch was happy with this arrangement -- for good reason -- and recorded it himself twice.
Lyndon-Gee was familiar to me from his excellent Naxos recordings of George Rochberg's Violin Concerto and Fifth Symphony, and he does an equally fine job here -- perhaps a little too stately at times but perfectly acceptable. The Arnhen Philharmonic, which was new to me, is an extremely adept group whose clarity and tone -- just dry enough to complement Bach's music but with a wonderful tone in ensemble passages -- is perfect for this piece
Don't hesitate on this disc. Buy it.
Markevitch's Elegant 'Musical Offering' Orchestration.......2004-05-16
Igor Markevitch (1912-1983) is known to us these days almost exclusively as a conductor; some will remember him as an excellent teacher of conducting and composition. But few have heard his music, not surprisingly since he stopped composing at age 29 and did not promote his music much after that. He wrote, 'I would say to you, very frankly, that I am objective enough to claim that there is music which needs to be heard before mine, and for which the need is more urgent. Apart from that, if my works are good enough, they can wait: and if they cannot wait, it is pointless to play them.' Thanks to Marco Polo the time has come to hear his music. This is volume 7 of a project to record his complete orchestral music. And if I'm not mistaken, the one I've been most waiting for (having only ever heard a portion of it, 'L'Envol d'Icare,' before) is next in line, his moving 'Icare,' generally acknowledged to be his masterpiece.
This CD contains Markevitch's elegant orchestration (and completion of the unfinished portions) of one of Bach's miraculous final works, 'The Musical Offering.' Many artists have made completions and orchestrations of the work, beginning with Johann Philipp Oley in 1763 and including such masters as Webern and Busoni. I have long loved the orchestration recorded by Karl Munchinger and coupled with Graeser's completion of 'Art of Fugue.' But that is a performance in high romantic style with lush strings and 19th-century expression. Here, however, we have a much leaner sound, partly due to Markevitch's orchestration and partly due to the style of playing exercised by the Arnhem Philharmonic under Christopher Lyndon-Gee, whose recordings I've come to treasure in recent months.
I'm not musicologist enough to comment about Markevitch's completions of the missing portions of Bach's work. All I can say is that they sound right and satisfying to me. He reorders the movements and conflates the randomly organized canons into a single movement. The work was originally published, along with the two separate Ricercars on the same theme, as '1. Two Fugues, 2. a Sonata, and 3. various Canons.' Markevitch inserts one of the canons (No. 8) into the Sonata as its fourth movement prior to the Gigue. He terms the conflated remaining nine canons as 'Theme with Variations,' doubling one of them (Quaerendo invenietis) into linked versions, one of which is the inversion of the other. (I'm paraphrasing from the excellent booklet notes written by conductor Lyndon-Gee.) The two Ricercars stand as the opening and closing movements of what now looks like this: 1. Ricercar a 3, 2. Theme with Variations (the Canons movement), 3. Sonata, 4. Ricercar a 6. I have to say this makes for a very satisfying experience.
I've probably played this disc a dozen times now. It has haunted me even in my sleep. (I suppose some will want to psychoanalyze that, but so be it.) This is incredible music, as I'm sure all will agree, and this completion and performance serve it well.

Heartily recommended.

As good as it gets.......2006-02-02
I have always liked the Musical Offering. That said, many people don't, finding it dry or "academic". If you fall into that category, this recording may change your mind. The playing is lively and most importantly, it focuses one's attention to the composition and interplay of the voices. I own four different versions of this work, and this recording is my favorite. Check it out!
Excellent recording.......2005-10-10
This version of the Musical Offering is the recommended one according to Bach's own website. That's why I bought it. It is brilliant.

When it comes to organ music there's Bach, and there's everyone else. The actual amount of organ music that he composed is in dispute for a couple of reasons. On issue is attribution: much of the music exists only in copies from Bach's pupils and family members, and so the question of authorship may be in doubt. The other issue is which instrument Bach actually intended some of the keyboard music to be played on. Although scholars agonize over this problem, the fact is that Bach's music usually sounds fine played even on kazoos--it's almost indestructible--so the organ suits it in any case. This collection is one of the most comprehensive available, and it's excellently played and recorded. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
One of the great CD sets of all time.......2006-02-08
Like another reviewer here I grew up on Helmut Walcha's DG set on LP, and was also familiar with a number of other "great Bach organ work" collections.
One can cavil over the way Hurford takes some of the pieces, I suppose, but his flair, imaginative registrations, and sheer musicality are hard to beat, and the recording too is fantastic.
It's quite easy to listen to three or four CDs from this set in a row, which says something about how fertile Bach's imagination, but also how absorbing Hurford's performance, and how willing he is to avoid generic and worthy church-like interpretations. This is music and music-making of the highest quality.
One of two "keepers".......2005-07-02
A lot of reviews rave about this set. I just wish they would say why it's so good and I hope they're, well, comparing it to something. Most seem to like the "choice of registration" which maybe one way an organist sizes another up.
Preferences in interpretation generally reflect the emphera of a time, and not absolutes. Choice one for this guy is probably Walcha. Dignified and insightful playing probably much more in line with what was expected of, and provided by, Bach way back when.
This set is flashier and lighter in some ways, more bombastic in others--very much a late Twentieth Century effort. Superficial. It suits a less thoughtful approach to the music which isn't a bad thing and isn't necessarily "damning with faint praise." I just doubt if this is really what the music should sound like and I don't mean that in the same way when I say that about Gould's playing. Gould was highlighting an intense part of Bach's craft, pointing the way into the music so to say.
This is a good set for those who like to shake the timbers with organ music; when it was first released in the early digital era it was marketed that way. Bach's music is pretty bullet-proof so it can stand this kind of approach. If you're not a hyper-critical listener, a period instrument hardliner, or a professional organist with strong well thought out opinions this is probably the set for you as the Walcha will sound dry and academic. On the other hand, if you are a powerful admirer of rock and roll classical this might actually be way too much Bach for you. I generally play this set (or Stokowski transcriptions) when I'm in a brain-dead mood and I want Bach-like stimulation without any work on my part. It's really quite nice.
Bach the organ works.......2004-11-23
A poor, jumpy, amateurish and unimaginative rendition of the pedal exercitium in g minor is what sticks to mind. Although its only an exercise i think it's worth more than that. More interesting stop combinations could have been used here. The toccata and fugue in d minor was too 'fancy' and was a boring affair overall with a silly choice of stops. I expected more from Peter Hurford. If this is the first time you've heard organ music please don't run away beacause of this. It can be so much more intersting.
Overall i dont think these performances do Bach Justice. Better versions can be found at virtuallybaroque.com (not my site)and better still competely free.
Peter Hurford gives incisive readings.......2004-04-05
Peter Hurford's traversal of the entire organ literature for London Decca is truly one of the greatest recorded achievements. All of the performances in this seventeen-disc set are immaculately played and perfectly performed. His vision, technicality, and sensibility make him a sensitive and authoritative interpreter of J.S. Bach's organ works. The records are mostly digital, crystal clear, and quite powerful. Hurford's command of his technique is astounding. I cannot stress how important this set truly is. I HIGHLY recommend buying this compilation. At about 8 dollars a CD, this is most certainly a steal.
EMPHATICALLY 5 stars!.......2004-02-27
Bach's organ works place incredible demands on the performer, both physically (consider the endurance it takes to play the massive Toccata in F major), technically (the Trio Sonatas, among many others), and interpretationally. Peter Hurford triumphantly meets those demands in a spectacular set of recordings.
To those who are doubters: listen to the (in)famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor, that overplayed warhorse. Hurford brings to it an electricity that makes you feel you are hearing it for the first time again. He also has an amazing ear for registrations, one of the most underestimated difficulties of an organist's art, never wearying the ear, but using a wide palette of colors. [Bach himself was widely known for his innovative registrational practices. Contemporaries remarked that when he was testing organs he would pull combinations of stops that they were certain would sound badly together, only to find that he had created an entirely new sound. Thus, creative registrations should not offend purists in any way.]
Hurford's approach to these works obviously takes into consideration, but is certainly not bound by, historically informed performing practices. His phrasing is immaculate, and consistently interesting. In all, this is a stunning accomplishment.
GET THIS WHILE IT REMAINS AVAILABLE. The classical recording industry is in trouble, and the deletions axe is constantly falling. Large, expensive sets like this are sure to go. While the price itself appears high, it is really very reasonable, running under $8 per disc.

Amazon.com essential recording
This extraordinary collection of music was an "offering" Bach made to Frederick the Great, King of Prussia (1740-1786). At a command performance in 1747, Frederick suggested a melody and Bach improvised on it at the organ. Greatly impressed, the king rewarded the composer handsomely; Bach promptly went home to Leipzig and prepared an entire set of pieces based on the royal theme as a "musical offering" to the monarch. Frederick was himself a flutist and sometime composer, so Bach filled his offering with craft as well as art, no doubt knowing that his technical skill would be appreciated.
A Musical Offering contains 10 ingenious canons, including a "perpetual" canon (these could, in theory, go on forever), "crab" canons (as one instrument plays its part, a second plays the same melody backward), and a "puzzle" canon (the musicians must figure out where the second voice is intended to enter); two ricercare (like fugues but less strict); and a trio sonata for flute, violin, and continuo. This 1974 recording was the first major Musical Offering recorded on period instruments, and the performers include Dutch early-music legends Gustav Leonhardt and the three Kuijken brothers. They give an elegant account of these erudite pieces--Leonhardt makes the opening Ricercar a 3 Voci sound almost majestic (on a harpsichord, no less)--and the Kuijkens play the trio sonata sweetly and soulfully. --Matthew Westphal
Customer Reviews:
Well done Bach.......2005-09-17
I own several recordings of BWV 1079. This is the one I listen to the most. The performers understand Bach and bring out the best of what some have derided as an exercise in composition. It is a satisfying recording emotionally, intellectually and technically.
Very well performed.......2005-03-17
These recordings are very authentic in the use of true period instruments, which is a very nice touch. This has run out of print, so whenever you can get it, do so. Of course, A Musical Offering is a must have for all classical lovers, and this is the one to get. The sound quality is also very good. Very highly recommended.
The best of all Musical Offerings.......2003-10-02
I have owned this recording ever since it was first issued on lp in 1981 (recorded in 1974). First, Gustav Leonhardt's performances of the two ricercare are beyond praise. Second, the performances by the Kuijken brothers and Robert Kohnen of the canons and trio sonata are impeccably expressive and suave. This recording has not been superceded even by the Kuijkens' later one on DHM (on which Kohnen plays the two ricercare as well as all the ensemble pieces). This will probably never be bettered, so buy it while you can. For those interested, the Kuijkens have also made a DVD of the Musical Offering, recorded in Leipzig, a useful supplement to the present release.
The cd doesn't make entirely clear exactly who plays what, so, for your information, taken from the original lp:
Leonhardt plays on tracks 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 (with Kohnen). Kohnen plays the rest (including the trio sonata). Highest recommendation.
Great music.......2001-09-27
The "Musical Offering" is a great source for poeple, like me, who love contrapunctal music. This is a good performance of it, and the music is beautiful and enthralling.
Even better, they used period instruments. I hate it when people perfom Bach on a piano or whatnot; this CD is hard-core harpsichord, et al.
Good music, as it probably sounded in the 1740's. Get it. Love it. I did.
Essential Bach.......2001-04-12
If you're a confirmed Bach-head and lover of contrapuntal music, this is a must recording. Gustav Leonhardt is one of the foremost Bach scholars and master harpsichordists of our time. He and his fellow musicians have given us a beautifully clean and transparent interpretation of Bach's "Musical Offering" to Fredrick the Great. Although this is a re-mastered recording from 1974, it is sonicly very pleasing. Highly recomended.

Marie-Claire Alain is not only one of the greatest organists alive today, but she stands directly in a what is undoubtedly the world's greatest tradition of organ playing. It was France that first rediscovered and cultivated Bach's organ music, and which in turn stimulated the great works of Franck, Widor, Vierne, and their school. Alain has recorded Bach's complete organ music no less than three times, here on historical organs of Bach's own time. Each disc is planned as a recital that showcases both the music and the instrument. Her performances are simply the last word in style, musicianship, and virtuosity. Magnificent. --David Hurwitz

Complete set CD review of Bach.......2007-05-12
I discovered Bach organ music 40 years ago. I love Bach, everything he wrote. I have 4 complete sets of Bach organ recordings. Marie Claire-Alan is my favorite organist of everyone I have heard. I met Marie and her husband in person after a performance she gave in Chicago. I have 2 complete sets of Bach organ played by Marie. One is on records and the other the new CD set. She is a little older now when she recorded the CD's. The albums have a more youthful sound to them, a little more energy and different registration selection on the organs. I love Marie in her youthful recordings more than these. I love the albums so much I will digitize them and listen to them over the new CD collection. I play the albums on my Linn turntable through McIntosh equipment.
The Definitive Collection of Bach .......2005-09-25
Marie-Claire Alain has recorded Bach's complete organ music 3 times, this set being the second time. She plays quite differently now, but these are some of the best interpretations. Each cd fearures a different organ dating from Bach's time, and all of the booklets are filled with pictures, history, and even the stop registrations for each of the pieces are given. Quite alot of research! If those of you who are new to Bach's organ works, I would recommend starting on a smaller scale, as some of these works can be quite intense to listen to. At any rate, this possibly may go down as one of the famous recordings of the century.
Absolutely wonderful!.......2004-07-27
From this huge box set, it is quite obvious that Bach was a dedicated composer for the organ (and obviously a virtuoso organist for that matter). Bach was a very prominent composer who lived in the Baroque era, and to truely understand his works and their style you must have a general outline of knowledge of the timeframe in which he lived. And so the Baroque era, (1600-1750) was characterized by vastness of proportion, rich counterpoint, great splendor and a highly ornamented melodic line. (One should note that the era abruptly ended after Bach's death which actually shows his importance in it) Some of these pieces are examples of works that require performers at the very highest degree to play them. His works go way beyond the famous Toccata and Fuge in D Minor, and with a "Complete" edition you can listen and hear them all for yourself, hence grasping the full view of his genious. This set is of wonderful value and worth every penny. Unfortunately, the Master's version is not available in a CD store, and so we must indulge upon other's interpretations. This out of the others stands as one of the very best. It is also complementing to the experience to have an instrument of the period (which is so in this set). Bach devoted his entire frame of mind towards the spreading of God's kingdom, therefore one could derive that he felt that by creating enlightening and insightful music, he was doing a lowly service to his God. Overall--this is a fabulous interpretation, and it will deepen one's respect and awe for Johann Sebastian Bach, the greatest organist who ever lived.
Monumental Artistry.......2003-03-08
Although I am partial to the Romantic Organ, particularly in the vein of Widor, Vierne and Rheinberger, it all begins with Bach. And in this case, one could say that it all begins with Marie-Claire Alain and her wonderful interpretations. Alain seems to understand that Bach was above all else a religious composer. Many "complete" works of Bach play short shrift with the liturgical works whereas these are some of the most satisfying of the group.
The sound is pure sonority, almost perfect, and the technical prowess is just awesome. Out of the millions of notes played, I never heard a miscue or slight jiggle. Still, keyboard wizardry is only part of the story. The registration is a work of art in itself. Alain understand the difference between the Baroque and the Modern, the French and the German and the old and the new. Just as she is a "natural" for Widor or Vierne, she also seems to have entered the Bach mind on some of these.
This is a fabulous collection worthy of any serious student of classical music. Nowhere can one derive such satisfaction that listenting to Bach played by Ms. Alain.
A Happy Sacrifice.......2001-06-30
I gladly sacrificed two of the four speakers in my car to this wonderful, wonderful treasure. What more can I say?
