Editorial Reviews
The New York Times, October 7, 2005
"gripping and impressive performances of Liszt, Debussy, Scriabin and Copland, as well as more recent works by Gould and Bolcom."

From the Artist
The music on this CD ranges from the beautifully sublime (Bolcom) to the exotic (Debussy); from the mid/late Romantic-era visionary works of Liszt and Scriabin, to fiery foot-stompers by Copland and Morton Gould.

Album Description
A smorgasbord of 19th and 20th-century piano works played by renowned, critically-acclaimed concert pianist Blair McMillen. Anthony Tommasini, chief music critic of the New York Times, raves about "Soundings" in a recent Times Arts section front-page article, calling McMillen's playing here "gripping and impressive."

Part of the Sound Healing series from Soundings of the Planet, Tao of Healing teams flautist Dean Evenson with Li Xiangting, a professor from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and an authority on the guqin, an ancient seven-string zither from China. Their collaboration, with barely perceptible support from keyboards, acoustic guitar (Scott Huckabay) and percussion, is a hushed, serene, and inviting experience--as soft as the faintest breeze felt on a peaceful, sun-warmed afternoon. Evenson's meditative flute, which rarely strays from the instrument's comfortable low and middle ranges, is the disc's prevailing voice, with Xiangting's guqin discreetly supplying tasteful, angular accents to complement the Western vibe of Evenson's reflective improvisations. At times, in fact, this calming, slow-go disc (60 minutes in length) briefly conveys traces of jazzlike harmonics (largely Huckabay's contribution) that flavors the blissful proceedings with a nice touch of musicality. A slight soundalike quality might be detected in some tracks, but this is a minor quibble. This is Evenson's first recording where natural sounds are not included, though the liner notes assert the mix makes use of "earth resonance frequency" (7.8 hertz), all to enhance a listener's attainment of an alpha state. Actually, Evenson, Xiangting, and company do a commendable job of that on their own. A strong choice for supplementing massage or meditation. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars Good for pets as well as people.......2007-03-03

I purchased this cd for myself, but noticed my Basenji seemed to relax a little whenever I put the music on. I often play it for her in repeat mode when I am going to be out. She is definitely "zen'd out" by the time I return!

I can best describe the music by saying that there are no loud instruments or uptempo arrangements to distract from the relaxation experience. The melody is soothing and uncomplicated, so it works well in many settings where a quiet mood is preferable (like doggie bath day). So do something nice for your pet...and yourself...and check out this cd. Alternately, I would recommend Dean Evenson's equally pleasant "Forest Rain" cd.

5 out of 5 stars nice.......2007-01-20

Students in my tai chi exercise classes for seniors prefer this--
over several similar CDs.

Maybe its the 7.8 hertz Earth Resonance Frequency in the mix?

Can be used also when doing the 24 Form Yang style--

Although "O'Holy Night" works wonders during the Christmas season
(5 and 1/2 minutes almost fits the Form perfectly.)

Something of a "greatest hits" collection, this CD contains several tracks from previous Evenson albums, as well as several new pieces. What sets Sound Healing apart from most recordings of its ilk is that the pieces are musically sound; instead of wandering from place to place, they have a musical starting point and destination, which makes them enjoyable to listen to. Of course, this doesn't detract from Evenson's intended purpose; Sound Healing is an excellent accompaniment to meditation, with its blend of flute, harp, guitar, and natural sounds such as crashing waves and birdcalls. Whether you use them as part of a healing program or just to relax, the gentle melodies and cinematic soundscapes of Sound Healing are an evocative treat. --Genevieve Williams

I have many "new age" type CDs, from Deuter to Yanni to Liquid Mind. After having Sound Healing for years, I find it stands the test of time - I still LOVE listening to it, it never grows old. It is one of my top two CDs, ever. (The other is Deuter's Wind & Mountain.) It is soft, sweet, with joyful undertones. I would recommend it for anyone, for music to relax to, sleep to, stretch or do yoga to, or just about any other purpose. A friend heard me playing it on my laptop and said, My goodness, that is such beautiful music, what is it? I told her and she got herself a copy right away. Also, it makes a great gift - we got it for our sick grandmother, for her to listen to at night, to help ease her to sleep.

Relaxing and beautiful in an uplifting, not sad, sort of way. Suitable for listening at any time of day or night.

5 out of 5 stars Ahh. or Ohm.......2007-03-30

This is the most relaxing music possibly, I've ever experienced. When I bought my first copy in a bookstore in Albuquerque, I had asked the clerk to play it for me before purchase. Upon listening to it with me, she said she felt so calm, that the rest of her day was going to be great-Unless she fell asleep!-Thats how "unstressed" it makes one feel.
I have given this CD (also in "tape" form) to people for gifts. Everyone has enjoyed it. Most recently, I gave a copy to my Yoga teacher. She plays it during class-Although "Sedona Suite" is "calming", it also can be mood enhancing and energyzing-Multi-purpose-
I also bought "Journey Back to Sedona"-Its okay but, I would say that this is by far Tom Barabas'es best!

5 out of 5 stars Sedona Suite.......2007-01-12

This is by far the best CD ever. We use it everytime we take a trip, it is the "TRIP" CD. The music is beautiful, it fills the air. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get lost in great music.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-26

Luckily this was a gift. No words. Gorgeous new age piano music, very relaxing. I loved it so much I got the sheet music and played it over and over until I got it down. Yanni who? This guy is unique and you will love it. Years later on a trip to Sedona I bought his next album, Journey Back to Sedona, and it was good but nothing compares to this album, if you buy one, buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Quiet, beautiful music with energy.......2005-10-10

This is my first Tom Barabas CD, and I've since bought "Journey Back to Sedona" as well. The music is quiet and beautiful, yet has a lot of energy to it, especially in the "More than Words", "Free Spirit" and "Moon Dust" tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Old Standards Never Die.......2004-10-29

I'm going to join the group that has had this album around for a long time. It was one of the first tapes I kept in the car as regular background music, and I've probably listened to it so much that I have it memorized. The CD version is in my library, and it still gets dragged out with regularity. Obviously, I like it.

Barabas uses fairly conservative classical music styling in presenting his music, often playing over orchestration. There are occasional similarities to Liszt, and a definite debt to all romantic pianists. Structured, entirely likable, but with nary a hard edge in sight. Barabas is a talented musician, and it shows in his technique more than anywhere else, where he refuses to fall into any typical, new age pattern.

The one flaw is that the music is a bit over-orchestrated and high flown. This are things that only become apparent on repeated, focused listening, and shouldn't interfere in the least with your enjoyment unless you are a purist. I'm not, and think there should be at least one Barabas album in every collection. Sedona Suite would be a good choice.

This Dean Evenson release is aptly titled, for Healing Sanctuary is an album one will want to meditate or chill out to by candlelight. While the album consists of eight compositions, they form a unified whole, maintaining a feeling of peace and tranquility throughout this hourlong journey. Evenson's soothing flute leads the way, underscored by his keyboards and accompanied by harpists Dudley Evenson and d'Rachael, with occasional guitar from Scott Huckabay and viola or hammered dulcimer from Phil Heaven. They gracefully weave an aural cocoon out of the ether, opening up a private place for mental and physical relaxation. Such concepts are nothing new to the New Age world, but the lush, inviting soundscapes of Healing Sanctuary maintain their allure and offer therapeutic qualities that many like-minded efforts do not. --Bryan Reesman

Album Description

"Leave your anxiety, tension, stress and fear at the gate and enter a Healing Sanctuary of relaxing and releasing sound in this gorgeous release from mystical flutist, Dean Evenson. In this serene space, personal or even planetary turmoil will lose their grip on the psyche as gentle waves of peace wash over the listener. Flutes, harps, keyboards and guitars gently drift in and out, creating tranquil soundscapes that are perfect for the healing arts, meditation, relaxation and sleep time. From the opening track, the listener is immersed in Peace Like a River and worldly concerns quickly seem to vanish like a distant shoreline, leaving the listener Quietly Floating Home in the soothing sounds and subtle energies of true serenity. In this place of spirit, one can connect to the healing forces of the universe and focus them on the outer world or Mending Your Own Mind, where this release leaves us. Immediately upon hearing Healing Sanctuary, I placed it in the #1 slot of my sleep-time music set, the slot that carries me into dream and I've found it sets the mood for deeply relaxing sleep and expansive dreams. Easily, one of Dean's best works, Healing Sanctuary receives my highest recommendation to all lovers of beautiful and relaxing new age music." -MUSICAL SOUNDSCAPES

Okay, how about: Candles.... a soothing massage.... and this CD.

What a wonderfully peaceful, spiritually evocative collection of instrumental songs! This is great for Yoga or any form of relaxation you can dream of. It even works great for background during more romantic and intimate moments.

This is a jewel!

5 out of 5 stars At Last, a Peaceful Night.......2003-08-28

Until three days ago I was not a fan of New Age music. I have now ordered another Dean Evenson CD and know I will buy more. I feel strange thanking artists for putting me to sleep, but I want to assure them should they read this that putting this lifelong insomniac to sleep is no small task. The peace I feel when I listen to this music is deep. My mind drifts off into beautiful settings that are first part of waking dreams and then of sleeping ones. The warm tones of the flute and harps are real; so much New Age music is oversynthesized. The artists have created a sanctuary indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Great for meditation and massage.......2007-07-07

Some new age music can be monotonous or uncaptivating. This album is diverse, interesting and very relaxing. A tremendous CD for meditation, massage or just relaxation. I'd rate it a 5 in it's genre, a 4 in all genres.

5 out of 5 stars healinghands.......2007-04-21

I have been listening and playing music from Peace through Music for 7 years. In my massage office, they are the favorite among my clients. This CD in particular creates a serene aura and every time I play it, even my talkative clients calm down and let healing begin for themselves. It is a must have for healing professionals and those wishing to vibrate on a higher level during meditaion!

5 out of 5 stars Earth Resonance Frequency.......2005-06-29

"In order to enhance a state of deep relaxation, we have included within the mix of music and natural sounds, the Earth Resonance Frequency of 7.8 hertz. This natural frequency of the planet's ionosphere supports relaxation, meditation, and "superlearning." ~Peace Through Music

Listening to this CD, reading poetry and soaking in an essential oil/sea salt bath is a weekly indulgence. I love the water sounds in Healing Waters and this CD always induces a deep state of relaxation. There are ocean waves, lush flutes, dreamy harps and flowing rivers. I love the way the waves sound and the way the flutes create a magical environment.

Instruments:

Silver Flute
Native Flute
Keyboards
Acoustic Guitar
Harp
Cello
Guqin - a silk-stringed zither, China's oldest stringed instrument

Sometime I fall asleep at night listening to this CD and imagine I'm in an underwater bubble with fish swimming all around. I have seen shows where they have underwater hotels like this, but so far I've only visited in my imagination.
For a deeper relaxation experience, use headphones and get into a warm comfy bed.

If you fall in love with this CD, also look for music by Tom Barabas, Scott Huckabay, Singh Kaur, Daniel Paul and Sunyata.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing music that isn't too New-Agey.......2005-04-28

I was looking for an album to relax to at the end of the day, during breath meditation, or a hot bath, but I didn't like the typical spaced out sounds of New Age music. This album delivers! It is beautiful, while never repetitive, and the whale/dolphin sounds feel like a natural, subtle addition to the music rather than a distraction. I have purchased several of Dean Evensons albums and they are all as wonderful as this one, and yet I could own several more without feeling like they repeat themselves. I can listen to them over and over again!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific background music.......2003-01-31

I use the CD Healing Waters by Dean Evenson as musical background in my office. I believe it helps me to concentrate better on the task at hand, but also allows me to cope with the challenges of the work day. I would recommend it. I may even buy a second one for meditation sessions at home.

Album Description

"This is one of the best CDs I've heard in a long time- a compelling compliment to a massage session. The music slows down your brainwaves and induces a peaceful, calm and meditative state, which assists in healing. A must for massage therapists. - CREATIONS MAGAZINE

"Serene flute melodies with tender harp, subtle keyboards and soothing guitars raise up from a backdrop of gentle nature sounds in this gorgeous release from sound healing pioneer Dean Evenson. Assembled from previous releases and also including four new compositions, this soothing collection creates a deeply relaxing atmosphere that is invaluable in increasing the healing benefits of a good therapeutic massage session. As a matter of fact, this CD creates a musical environment that is so relaxing and refreshing that it almost makes the massage table and attached masseuse obsolete! Accompanied by the phenomenal Soundings Ensemble, Dean's ethereal flute expressions take the listener on a healing voyage that quickly distances you from the troubles and concerns of daily living by the medium of his beautiful musical soundscapes. Expertly mastered to further enhance the healing qualities of Dean's flutes and keyboards, Dudley Evenson and d'Rachael's harps, Phil Heaven's viola, Scott Huckabay's guitar and Tom Barabas' piano, Sound Massage could soon stand as the premier musical release for massage therapy, stress relief and relaxation. Definitely a "must have" for massage therapists and anyone in the healing arts, Sound Massage easily receives my highest recommendation to all lovers of beautiful, peaceful music." -MUSICAL SOUNDSCAPES by Rev Robert Walmsley

5 out of 5 stars Tom Barabas "Romantic Rhapsodies".......2004-07-05

This smooth, wonderfully interpreted CD turned into my fave CD for relaxing, doing artwork, computer tutorials & gardening. Also, so inspired by him that I bought his sheet music & now play some of his work on piano. This is my 2nd purchase as someone misplaced the first one. A must have for right-brainers.

5 out of 5 stars Magically romantic - no fluff here..........2001-04-26

I have many of Tom's CD's, and finally got around to getting this one - and I waited tooo long! Unlike many of today's 'romantic' pianists around (who do write and play well), Tom Barabas - classically trained with one very creative and passionate mind - is in a league of his own. For those fans of 'Sedona Suite' - you will not be disappointed. He has taken the 'ethereal new age' tone of SS, refined and reshaped it, and wrapped his loving soul into every piece on this beautiful CD. There is a new side of TB that you will hear on this CD, and tracks like 'Moonlight', 'Adagio', 'Epiphany' and 'Dolphin Dream' weave a soothing, at times rhapsodic sound - yet still remain focused on the intent of the pieces - to make you, the listener, feel a sense of joy and uplifting of the spirit.

Tom added some very tasteful - and not overdone - arrangements on many of the tracks. The injection of flute, guitar and synth accent many of the pieces very well. The only negative point is that the second piece ("Shades of Love") didn't seem to fit - a bossa-nova inflected piece that sounded too much like cheap night club music, amidst 9 other *magnificent* piano tracks that take you on one of Tom's best journeys. Not a point that should stop you from adding this CD to your collection today!

Overall, I am in full agreement with the artist himself - it is truly one of his best CD's. I think he opened a door here for 'new age haters' that would have shyed away from his 'Sedona' inspired works, and created a CD of music that anyone would enjoy (without selling out!).

5 out of 5 stars Rhapsodic piano music!.......2000-01-27

The first two tracks of Romantic Rhapsodies gave me the impression that this was going to be a very pleasant smooth jazz album, but it is so much more than that! I have to admit that this is my first Tom Barabas recording, so I apologize to his long-time fans (Barabas has recorded twelve albums to date). However, I will be digging into his other CDs for more! Steeped in classical traditions as well as jazz influences, Barabas has a varied approach to his music, keeping it consistently elegant and sophisticated. Barabas' years at the Liszt Conservatory in Hungary as a child really show! This kind of understanding of the piano and it's capabilities can only come from one who has devoted his or her life to music and the instrument to the point that he or she has become one with it.The first four tracks are beautiful, and I was thoroughly enjoying my initial ride through the album, but the fifth track, Baroque composer Tomas Albioni's "Adagio" really grabbed me. A familiar piece occasionally used in soundtracks, Barabas' treatment simply shimmers! It is primarily a piano piece with background choral and instrumental accompaniment - what a incredible beauty! "Epiphany" is another favorite. It opens with an energetic piano solo as the sax begins to weave its way into the melody. Dark and haunting, I find this piece has an almost ominous quality that I really like - the percussion certainly adds to the drama - and then the dark clouds open to welcome a burst of musical sunshine. This is also a very remarkable piece! "Solar Wind" is piano with synth strings - again, a haunting and incredibly beautiful piece. The last two tracks return to a more upbeat, jazzy feel - especially "Dance Me to Heaven", a light and breezy love song. This is a very strong album from start to finish, but the middle four tracks are incredible! I'm hooked, and look forward to discovering Tom Barabas' other works!

A warm, reflective paean to North American temperate rainforests, Forest Rain from flautist-keyboardist Dean Evenson stands as one musician's interpretive soundtrack of the moods, subtleties, and cycles inherent in the few remaining stands of such forests. Recorded in 1993, a few of Evenson's synthesizer textures may sound faintly dated (appearing a bit too shiny in places), but this is a minor distraction in an otherwise well-executed recording notable for its sense of calm and its elevated degree of musicianship. More than tree-huggers playing simplistic melodies, Evenson and company (d'Rachel and wife Dudley Evenson on harp, Jonathan Kramer on cello) create gentle atmospheres (some with keyboards, some without) that eschew overt melodicism in favor of evocative soundscapes that capture the quiet majesty of grand trees. Highlights: Evenson's softly searching flute passages in the 10-minute "Deep Forest"; the glowing, Suzanne Ciani-like "Branching Out"; and the closer, "Prayer for the Ancient Trees," featuring the drumming and chants of a Lummi Nation member. The disc's attractive packaging includes an educational insert outlining the benefits humans derive from a healthy temperate rainforest. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars You can't go another day without it..........2006-11-08

This is one of Dean Evenson's best albums. If you want to play music while performing energy work, meditation, or just to relax...this music will help. I recommend this CD highly, I listen to it a lot. The flute will just take you away. But of course, how can you go wrong with any of Dean's music? Happy Healing.

5 out of 5 stars So soothing, calming, a sense of peaceful joy!.......2006-06-06

I bought this CD about 5 years ago and still have it and play it for my clients. I can't tell you how many times I have them ask who's cd this is and special requests to have this cd playing while I do their spa service! I enjoy and get such a sense of happiness and calm from it that I even play it before I go to sleep at night sometimes. This is a must have if you are looking for a special cd to create atmosphere, happiness, serenity fro yourself and your spa clients!!! LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars Forest Rain: Beautiful, relaxing music.......2005-11-23

Dean Evenson is a very interesting person. After earning a Master's Degee in the 60's in molecular biology, he decided to follow his other interests of art and music. We all won out on that decision. I have heard several of Dean's albums and so far, this is my very favorite.

Dean uses his music to promote knowledge and reverence for the Earth. He incorporates ambient sounds of nature and the voices and music of the people indigenous to the area. This CD includes recordings of rain falling in the rainforest. These, along with the native and silver flutes, keyboards, harp (by his wife Dudley Evenson) and other musicians combine to make a beautiful sound.

The music is uplifting and restful.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful nature music that will lull you to dreams........2001-12-04

I bought this CD years ago, and its one of the few that I've had for so long. This is new age at its best. The music is so calming, and so peaceful, and will put you at ease and to rest quietly and quickly. I know you can find lots of 'nature sounds' CDs out there, but nothing I have encountered compares to this one. Dean Evenson is the best, and I would highly recommend this as well as 'Ocean Dreams.' He is the master at his task, and while I have lots of other New Age CDs, this one is a genuine favorite.

5 out of 5 stars LIQUID PEACE.......2007-02-22

"Tao of Peace" takes me back to another place in time, perfect tranquility in unity beyond the taking on of human form. This music is a wonderful gift that adds synergy to Rei-ki. Li Xiangting is a healer.

5 out of 5 stars Just wonderfully relaxing!.......2006-12-12

I own a number of Dean Evenson CDs, and this one is one of my favorites along with Tao of Healing. I have a hard time finding the right words to describe the music other than "perfectly woven". Everything just seems to fit right into place and is wonderfully balanced. I've always loved Oriental music, as long as it's done right - and this really is done so well. My favorite track is Slow Samba. The rhythm makes it both relaxing and uplifting at the same time. It has always brought me a deep sense of peace.

Call this corny... but I recently moved into a new home and it was very important to me to 'set the right energy' for my house. I rely heavily on music to do that, so the first songs I played in the new home were really important to me. I chose Slow Samba as the second song I played (the first was "Morning Has Broken" by Cat Stevens because it reminded me of my Grandma and the peace she brought my life.) I remember looking out over the hills and watching the sun set as Slow Samba played. Very peaceful and relaxing! I would definitely recommend this CD along with Tao of Healing.

5 out of 5 stars East meets West.......2005-10-26

I use this CD a lot for meditation or yoga practice. The music has a very peaceful feel to it and I like the use of traditional Chinese instruments. There is an East meets West feel here that is very appealing. My husband likes it for a background when he does tai chi.

Dean Evenson has many fine CDs on the market, but this is probably my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect companion to Tao of Healing.......2005-04-28

I also own Tao of Peace, another album by the same artists, and this one takes off where the other left off. The same beautiful flute and Guqin blend to create a soothing, and exotic mix. Perfect for massage, meditation, or yoga.

    Album Description

"No wonder every massage therapist and yoga instructor I know plays music from Soundings of the Planet. Dean Evenson's familiar, echoing flute has me so well trained that I go into a little trance as soon as I hear it!" -- Mara Applebaum, New Age Retailer

"Dean envelops us with a whole earth full of flutes, keyboards, and natural sounds that blend better than anyone could hope for." -- MusicDish.com

"Dean Evenson is my absolute favorite for massage! I have all of his CDs and have been using them for years." -- Ruthy Lucas, LMT

Warm, resonant tones of the wood flute merge with the gentle sounds of flowing water, weaving a relaxing tapestry of deep inner peace. Soothing flute melodies, soft drumbeats, and rattles invoke the spirit of nature to create a tranquil mood. For over twenty-five years, Dean Evenson has captured the magic and deep essence of the wood flute on many Soundings recordings. People have often asked for an all-wooden-flute album--so now, for the first time ever, he dedicates an entire album to the mystical quality of this beautiful instrument. Wood flutes are made from the earth elementals, sometimes hewn from tall cedars, or carved from reeds, bamboo, or--as in the case of one of Evenson's flutes--lightening-struck ash. The flute's subtle tones are blended with wisdom and the breath of life.
