Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Carl Czerny: Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 214 Carl Czerny (1791 1857) was extraordinarily productive, composing over 1,000 works, many of them for the piano during a period of great change for the instrument. Physical frailty and a growing disinterest in performing in public resulted in him staying in Vienna where he was able to maintain contact with Hummel, Clementi, Chopin and Beethovens intimate circle.
It is unclear how many piano concertos Czerny composed but this is certainly the best known and most attractive. It is in the usual three movements with the first in binary form with the dramatic piano entrance, a monothematic second movement and a concluding rondo. (Recorded in Vienna in 1968)
Ferdinand Ries: Piano Concerto in C sharp minor, Op. 55
Like Czerny, Ferdinand Ries (1784 1838) was prolific. His output included 8 symphonies, 26 string quartets and a large body of piano music including 8 piano concertos. The third in C sharp minor, was dedicated to fellow virtuoso Muzio Clementi and is his best-known work.
The concertos eventful first movement is generically romantic rather than Beethovenesque. The teachers influence can be heard more in the entrance of the piano in the bold chordal assertions. The delicate and introverted second movement ends not in the original key but in preparation for the finale with its sprightly theme in a major key. The concerto ends surprisingly in a reassertion of C sharp minor.

Great Reference for a Great Tradition.......2003-03-03
Sauer once gave a list of Liszt's worthy pupils. Many of them are here; but among them, Hofmann said only Sauer was "a real great virtuoso", and he went on to say, "Friedheim was so-so and Lammond didn't impress me..."etc.
Sauer is impressing indeed and in terms of musicality and interpretaion, he compared favourably even with Hofmann. Equally interesting was Rosenthal. Unlike Sauer, he lost his power to thunder in his old age, but he made it up in all the nuances and colours whihc are quite well captured here. D'albert was probably the greatest of all Lizst pupils, something we don't want to miss, same for de Greef and indeed all others here.
But the transfer here leaves much to be desired, even for those who are not new to (mono) archive records: surface noise is too heavy for general enjoyment. But it is definitely better than Busoni's recording for sure. We don't have much choice, do we?

A forgotten masterpiece.......2005-03-18
This magnificant concerto by Czerny at first I thought I could be hearing a concerto by Hummel. It is now a real favourite and with the splendid playing of Felicja Blumental (it is a real gem and full of fun. As our Concert FM announcer said when playing it on the request session 'You find yourself singing laong and tapping your feet- I am sure it was enjoyed by a great many. What other gems like this are remaining to be rediscovered.

nice to hear emotion.......1999-06-07
As a pupil of pupil of Leschetitzky- words can not do justice to these great performances-unlike other critics I do not believe the performers nor the music should be analysed ad infinitum-every performer and composer has something beautiful to say-these are special performances by special artists when it was considered alright to show emotion, unlike the Juilliard school style of playing at competitions and performances where there is a place for everything and everything is in its place-sit back and enjoy these marvelous performers and the music they play.
