Crow Country
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Rookwood for double bass; Labyrinth Tango for accordion; and Piano Dreaming for ruined pianola. That Time (Simulplay II) is for a duo of prepared piano and double bass. Of course, with Ross, this thumbnail description tells not much of the story. So we'll let Ross say a few words. Step on down. "During the drought that never ended at Nallan Sheep Station I confess to recording on the Ruined Piano at night. I'd hide in the freezing shed crouched under the piano waiting for Dave to turn off the TV, switch off the generator and go to bed. Straight after, I would drag up an oil drum, feel the broken teeth of the Pianola under my fingers, then play con bravura passione for the applause of millions of cicadas through the shivery shuddery graveyard shift." Hmmmm.

Though it follows a standard movie formula and predictable plot twists, the film Hope Floats is saved in part by the above-average performance of Sandra Bullock, portraying a separated woman who finds her way back to her hometown in Texas, daughter in tow. The soundtrack seems to follow in due course, a collection of country and rock (thanks to the Rolling Stones) acts adding shades of twang to songs that, for the most part, all sound fairly familiar. The duds of the bunch, Bryan Adams's "When You Love Someone" and Sheryl Crow's "In Need," are saved in large part by some surprise keepers, courtesy of Garth Brooks, the Mavericks, and Gillian Welch. The covers are interesting enough. Brooks's take on Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love" is modest and pithy and a far cry from the overblown Trisha Yearwood performance of the same tune that codas the collection. --Jason Verlinde

Hope Floats - Original Soundtrack.......2007-03-08
This was not the soundtrack that I wanted. I wanted the soundtrack with the Garth Brooks song on it and some of the other more recognizable songs from the movie - not instrumentals. I was really disappointed and will continue to try to find the soundtrack I want.
Not what I was expecting.......2007-03-08
I thought that this was the actually songs from the movie....not the score. Nice, but not sure who wants to listen to random movie scores.
Hope Floats..............2006-12-15
was a great movie. I bought this CD as a gift for a friend, she enjoys it.
EVERYONE LISTEN!!!.......2006-05-14
For some confused reviewers out there, just to set the story straight-the song "Make You Feel My Love" was written by Bob Dylan, not Garth Brooks. I've got nothing against Garth, but give credit where credit is due!
A great album........2005-04-06
Just wanted to let anyone reading these reviews that the review by MusicFan posted September 2, 2003 about how misleading these reviews are, is completely wrong!! Musicfan is talking about a totally different CD. He/She wanted the album with "various artists" but bought the wrong one containing the "original movie soundtrack". This is a great album and worth every cent. Any of the reviews that refer to this album with 11 tracks is in the wrong place. The "various artists" album has 13 tracks. Just trying to clear up some confusion!

For some fairly shallow performers, there comes a time when their craft becomes a chore, when scribbling songs for the big follow-up album turns into a black-and-white deadline. Clever composers can almost disguise this ennui, burying it in a smarmy, sunshine-beaming mix. Key word: almost. Ergo, a trial spin through clever composer Sheryl Crow's The Globe Sessions evokes the faintest hint of a feeling that grows stronger with each successive listening--there's no sense that the artist intended this material as anything more than tepid album filler. A conversation with your local supermarket checkout girl would prove far more riveting than Crow's pretentious and all-too-casual observations (set to the tune, it must be noted, of some likable, jangly hooks). "Get out the camera, take a picture / The drag queens and the freaks are all out on the town," she purrs over chucka-chucka choogling on "There Goes the Neighborhood," which is probably what any self-respecting drag queen or freak would mutter once Crow moved in, scrounging for her now-patented vicarious cool. The closest The Globe Sessions comes to any palpable sincerity is during an actually-might've-lived-it, whoops-I'm-in-trouble-again "Mississippi." Even then, Crow drowns the moment in perfectly enunciated syllables, more prissy than alleycat-prowling. Crow started out with a credible Tuesday Night Music Club pedigree, surrounded by visionaries such as David Baerwald (For this disc, she relies heavily on ex-Wire Train mainstay Jeff Trott). But they're gone, and things change, to the point where, if you support this silly sycophant with your hard-earned dollars, there's only one question that you'll need to be asked: Do you want paper or plastic? --Tom Lanham

Not very good at all, Sheryl........2007-06-06
I bought this CD because I liked My Favorite Mistake. I definitely should've listened to samples though, because the rest of the CD is unmemorable. I don't remember ONE song from this disc besides the mentioned single. I really did try hard to like it though - I was waiting and waiting for another song to hit me but it never happened.
I give this CD 2 stars because My Favorite Mistake is a pretty good song, and plus I'm sure that there is worse out there. But not much worse. I'm SO disappointed. I was eagerly awaiting this CD once I purchased it used. I haven't listened to it since.
Not recommended at all.
My Favorite Mistake, the video.......2007-01-05
I didn't see it mentioned but this enhanced CD includes a music video of her performing My Favorite Mistake. Incredibly powerful in showing what a beautiful woman she really is. Well worth buying the CD just for the video.
"I spent a year in the mouth of a whale...".......2006-05-01
The Globe Sessions is Sheryl's Crow best album yet. I love all 11 tracks, they are personal, raw, and intelligent. I heard Crow didn't even want to release this album because of its private content, she thought this album was too personal like a diary and she wasn't ready to share inner-most thoughts with the rest of the world. I am glad she did release this amazing album, i like when Crow is vulnerable and open for discussion. My Favorite Mistake, about her relationship with Eric Clapton: "Your friends are sorry for me, they watch you pretend to adore me but I'm no fool to this game." There Goes the Neighborhood is a rock song, fun and cool lyrics: "I dropped acid on a Saturday night just to see what the fuss was about..." The best song on the record is Riverwide, beautiful and sweeping song: "Tell ma i loved the man even though i turned and ran, lovely and fine i could have been, laying down in the palm of his hand..." It Don't Hurt is coming to terms with a broken relationship and finding someway to move on: "The electric man looks good today, well maybe not, trying hard to feel that way, the electric man's a good place to start." Maybe that's Something is mellow and cool: "Maybe that's something, maybe that's one more thing more than nothing." Am I getting Through is full of contradictions, it rocks! "I'm afraid I am queer..." Anything but Down is my fave song: "I bring you apples from the vine, how quickly you forget, I ran the bath and pour the wine." The Difficult Kind, a little too long but still lovely: "If you could see what love has made of me then I'd no longer be in your mind, the difficult kind, 'cause babe I've changed." Mississippi is written by Bob Dylan, this song is very country to me: "The only thing that I did wrong, i stayed in Mississippi a day too long." Members Only, I loved this song on first listen, her best uptempo song: "Uncle Larry's hooked on ice again, he seems to be stuck in the '80s, he wears his Members Only jacket 'cause he thinks it turns on all the ladies..." Crash and Burn is gorgeous, you can hear the sadness in Crow's voice: "In case you ever want to track me down, I'll take my cell phone to bed..." There is a hidden track so don't skip over it. The Globe Sessions is Crow's masterpiece, buy it now.
The Difficult Kind.......2006-03-17
The Amazon reviewer is a moron, plain and simple. But I can't blame him for his religion. I too, believe I am a music snob, and if you play a dozen or so of Sheryl Crowe's songs, I would scoff too.
But I recently heard "The Difficult Kind" at a friend's house, and asked what the heck album this is from, because THIS is the kind of song she was born to play. Slow, thoughtful, melodic, heartfelt. I was hooked from the first few notes. I can't believe it took me so long to hear this great song.
I think the reviewer made the same mistake I did: he went into the listening experience with certain assumptions and expectations as to what this album would sound like and what it would be, and he never listened to the whole thing. Because if he had listened to the entire album, he would have heard "The Difficult Kind" and he would have had at least one good thing to say about the album. And that is a cardinal rule of any reviewer who really, REALLY knows music: you must find something good to say about every album you review, because even in this corporate music driven-world every album is in at least some small way a labor of love, and the artists deserve our admiration for putting themselves out there, if nothing else. God knows we're not doing it, and it's pathetically easy to judge someone else's work when you haven't even tried.
"The Difficult Kind" is not only a highly redeeming track, it's probably worth the price of the disc.

Classic.......2005-10-25
I've had this album since it came out and I have to say, it is one of my all-time favorite albums. To this day, I listen to it and think what a genius Sheryl is, and why some consider her a legend. "My Favorite Mistake" is amazing, one of my favorite "sad love songs" ever. If you don't pay attention, the song can blend in as a mellow/semi-bland sounding light rock tune--but when I listen to the wistfulness of the lyrics and Sheryl's perfect delivery of them, the song sums up some of my (past) relationship thoughts to a "T". Another stand-out song is "Crash and Burn" that only Sheryl can deliver with such raw emotion. It starts out seemingly innocuous enough...but then she lets it all out! Sheryl is one of the best at the sadder, more introspective song without sappiness. I guess she could be considered "depressing" (as some of my friends say), but she seems to keep a level of intelligence and realness about her that makes you think, "Yeah, sometimes I feel near the end of my rope.... but I'll pull through." I also really like her albums "Tuesday Night Music Club" and "C'mon C'mon" but this album along with "Sheryl Crow" are the must-haves of Sheryl.

The original Yippie, Abbie Hoffman left little room for compromise. His combative activism eventually forced him underground and guaranteed him a place in the lexicon of alternative Sixties culture. The soundtrack features both original 1960s protest music from Phil Ochs, Edwin Starr, and Country Joe and the Fish and remakes of classic songs from an impressive list of modern musicians. The reinterpretations are strong. Steve Earle and Sheryl Crow belt out the Chambers Brothers' "Time Has Come Today" with a punk edge. Bonnie Raitt has never sounded more relaxed, underlining the somber sentiments of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" with a gentle, tremolo-ed guitar. Dylan's farewell to protest, "My Back Pages," is given a majestic reading by Joan Osborne and Jackson Browne, with a funereal organ haunting the track. Most appropriate is Ani DiFranco covering Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" with her usual dose of idiosyncrasy. --Rob O'Connor
Customer Reviews:
Steal Track #1?.......2007-07-07
This is generally just an OK soundtrack - except for the 1st song "Time Has Come Today" by Sheryl Crow and Steve Earle which is just... phenomenal. Actually, IMHO, it is one of the great covers of all time and alone is worth the cost of the CD.
One of those rare soundtracks..........2004-09-27
This is one of those rare soundtracks that actually has vision, direction and cohesiveness. It consists mostly of updated versions of classic songs. Steve Earle & Sheryl Crow team up for the Chambers Brothers classic "Time". Other interesting team-ups are Joan Osborne & Jackson Browne covering Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages" and Eric Clapton, Billy Preston & Ringo Starr doing John Lennon's "Power to the People". Bonnie Raitt does a beautiful cover of Dylan's "It's All Over Now Baby Blue". Ani DiFranco covers two songs, Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" and Phil Och's "When I'm Gone". Timothy B. Schmidt rocks with CS&N's "Carry On". And last but not least, Mary Chapin Carpenter does a very bluesy and sexy version of Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" that would have been a great single at AAA formats. There are also a few originals - Phil Och's: I Ain't Marching Anymore, Country Joe and the Fish: Superbird & Fell Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag, and Edwin Starr: War.
Quality Covers.......2003-01-04
This is a soundtrack which updates some classic songs and brings back a few golden oldies. For me, the greatest hit is the absolute blow your socks off version of "Power to the People" which Eric Burdon and Billy Preston nail. Besides being an unlikely pairing, the two give what was a second-tier John Lennon song red carpet treatment that rivals the master musician's with Burdon's empassioned vocals and Preston's pounding keyboards! Equally as magical is Bonnie Raitt's cool bluesy reading of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue." "The highway is for gamblers ... take what you have gathered from coincidence," she croons magically. I have this tune recorded by Joan Baez, the Byrds, Judy Collins, Richie Havens, Barry McGuire, the Animals and of course, the songwriter. Raitt shines! The other Dylan pairing with Jackson Browne and Joan Osborne's version of "My Back Pages" is weighted only by Steve Earle's somber organ throughout the piece. Mary Chapin Carpenter's wacky version of Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" is also making me hit for the repeat button with her little warble, "I'm just mad about 14; she's just mad about me." Steve Earle and Sheryl Crow do a great job of "Time Has Come Today"; and it's interesting to hear the female vocal on the song. The Phil Ochs track and Country Joe's "Fixing" track are thematically essential for the film and sound great. All in all, this is a soundtrack that has great focus and unity. U snooze U lose! Enjoy!
Abbies Best.......2000-10-11
As I was actually in this movie.. as an extra. I am pleased to tell you & your readers.. Its a Great sound track to an excellent Movie.. watch for me in the fountain with the topless girls Im throwing a Frisbee with them. Thanks for this Oportunity, Don
Soundtrack for Multiple Generations.......2000-08-07
This CD works for more than those of us who were teenagers when this music was first released. The Steve Earle/Sheryl Crow collaboration (Time Has Come Today) is a more contemplative treatment of this song. Bonnie Raitt shines (It's All Over Now, Baby Blue) with a bluesy, heartfelt rendering of this Dylan classic. Phil Ochs, Edwin Starr, and Country Joe & The Fish are here for authenticity, to balance the "newness" of Ani DiFranco, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Joan Osborne. I applaud the artist selection as more daring than would have been expected.
See the soundtrack for "1969" for a collection of original songs and associated artists from this era.

LIVE IN CONCERT .......2005-05-18
I had the honor of seeing Floyd play live in concert at the Indian fair in Oklahoma with my aunt. It was an experience and a huge honor to meet him and shake his hand. His music is very powerful and sends many political messages out. I love his music and actually had them on cassette tape. I finally found this on CD and am very excited to get it. For those who do not understand his music...it's and Indian thing..you wouldn't understand....ayyyee!!
Great music--one missing song.......2003-01-25
This is great music by Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman, an American Indian singer-songwriter. Westerman's musical style is influenced mostly by folk and country performers, including his friend Kris Kristofferson. The songs are great, whether you are an activist or just a music lover.
This CD includes remakes of songs from Westerman's two albums: "Custer Died For Your Sins" from 1969 and "The Land is Your Mother" from somewhere around 1980. Though it is a remake, and Red Crow is older, he still sounds good. Like another reviewer, I'd still prefer the originals, but not by much. For some reason, the order of the songs is different from the original "Custer..." album, which can be distracting if you've heard the original many times, but isn't a big deal.
The bigger problem with this CD, and the reason I don't give it 5 stars, is that one song is missing. The original "Land is Your Mother" album included a song called "Bring Me to My Knees". It was one of my favorites on the album and I don't know why it was left out. Other than this one substantial oversight, this is a great CD, one I highly recommend.
rolling with Red Crow.......2000-11-24
Man, just to see the cover of the original album in CD-size is a trip... my pal in NYC gave me a vinyl copy of the original 1969 "Custer Died...," an album that still burns (as the previous reviewer Mr. Nakajima noted so accurately) with the Sacred Fire of hundreds of years of the White Man's oppression. Floyd (real name Red Crow) has written some timeless songs, all right... the 1st half of this CD is a remake (in its entirety) of the original LP, which Red Crow may not even have the copyrights to anymore (don't forget what the music business was like back then, with artists getting ripped off every second). John Prine (an equally as brilliant American Songwriter) just did the same thing with some of his older chestnuts, re-recording them for his new CD "Souvenirs," because (unbelievably) he doesn't own the rights to the original versions! Of his own songs! Atrocious... he (and any other songwriter who's been raped by the industry of their songs) should have some recourse; unfortunately re-doing the songs seems to be the only way.
But no worries... the re-makes are awesome in their own right because, as with Prine, Red Crow has lived inside these songs for decades and knows how to make 'em happen, you know? Guess what, I like some of the re-makes BETTER than the originals, especially "Here Come the Anthros" and "Missionaries." Floyd is top-drawer because he takes the country-ish, pedal-steel idiom (itself the cultural terrain of Whitey) and turns it in on itself, writing almost exclusively about how the White Man completely destroyed his people and, well, much of the world in general. Kinda like a cross between Johnny Cash and Chief Seattle.
The 2nd half of the CD is Floyd's other album, "The Land is Your Mother," which sounds like it was done in the early-to-mid 1970s (his voice sounds closer to the original "Custer..," while the re-done version has him older and in deeper, raspier, more wizened voice). Standouts are many: nice Traditional Native tunes, the "B.I.A." blues, and a song in which Floyd asks us, "How long have you been blind? I've been counting a long, long time...". My favorite so far is "Quiet Desperation," a ballad about an Indian leaving the Big City he doesn't understand to return to the Land. Overall I'd say get this CD and anything else you can dig up on the legendary Red Crow, who many of you may know from his acting adventures in "Dances with Wolves" and one particularly wild 3-part episode of "The X-Files". Maybe someday even the original "Custer Died for Your Sins" will be reissued, who knows?....
Excellent, though not as powerful as the original.......2000-08-08
If you've heard the 1969 version of "Custer" than you may be disappointed. Westerman sounds a little downbeat compared with the fiery AIM/Alcatraz sort of spirit of the original. But, don't walk away yet! This is a terrific batch of recordings. And if "Custer" isn't as good, "La Tierra es Tu Madre" is a wonderful recording. Take a listen.

Sheryl Crows best album.......2006-01-24
Sheryl Crow over the last decade or so has established herself as one of the top writers in music.
Sheryl is somewhat of a throwback to the 70's or possibly the 60's.
Sheryl not only writes top folk songs, but can Rock an audience as well.
The Globe Sessions is to date, her finest work.
Included on the CD are, There Goes the Neighborhood which is one of her better songs.
My Favorite Mistake is rumored to be about her fling with Eric Clapton, that did not work out. My Favorite Mistake features some outstanding guitar from her guitarist Peter Stroud.
Anything but Down is another great song.
The Difficult Kind follows, and features some outstanding harmony as well as fine lyrics. Mississippi is another great song.
Sheryl Crow has not only established herself among Rock audiences, she is also establishing herself amongst Country audiences.
I remember the first time I heard the CD. I enjoyed it very much and it was a breath of fresh air............you will too.
Good album, decent sacd mix.......2004-12-24
I'll just talk about how the sacd sounds since you can read the album review elsewhere. I compared it with my old cd version and there was no doubt that the sacd sounded better. Tighter bass, near life-like vocals, a more natural sound all around. I didn't care much for the multichannel mix. It's kind of like they tried too hard to use the surrounds and ended up with a bare front sometimes. I don't think rhythm guitars should be coming from the surround speakers.
To sum it up, good quality with an adventurous multichannel mix.

Description
"We are a country band, but we'll be what ever you want us to be. That's the beauty of doing what we do, the music's free to be anything that you want it to be." That's how Bart Crow describes their style of music. And with so many great bands running up and down the highways and with all of the great artist working here in Texas, it's a known fact that one must come with their A-Game to make it here. Well, that's just what the Bart Crow Band does every time they take the stage. Bart Crow describes their sound as "a unique blend of country & rock with a lot of heart & soul." "I love the music and stories of my heroes, Ronnie Van Zant, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash, and I just do my best to do what they did, be real
that's all". With songs that intertwine and weave stories that walk the line between redemption and despair, Bart Crow writes songs from the heart that leave you wondering, was singing about me, or drawing off of his own emotions on life, love, & friends. The Bart Crow Band is made up of some of the finest musicians that Texas has to offer, each bringing their own styles & sounds to the table. Drummer Charles Simons brings his heavily country influenced drumming style, while bassist Kirk Richardson, formally of Speed Trucker fame, brings his razor-sharp bass licks to keep the sound on a country-rock edge. Top it off with the blues-rock style of lead guitarist Paul Russell; what you're left with is a hard working band that can light up any stage with their driving live performance.

Product Description
Kris Kristofferson writes: “I Think Johnny Cash would be especially proud of this tribute album. Not just because of his high regard for Floyd Red Crow Westerman or his own life-long identification with Native Americans and commitment to their cause, but because it is such a respectful, loving portrayal of the man’s work. Floyd’s deep, powerful voice resonates with the truth. I had no idea he could sound so much like John.”

Customer Reviews:
Sheryl's 3rd cool album.......2004-04-26
This album didn't spawn many Top 20 hits like her first two albums. The biggest hit on this album is MY FAVORITE MISTAKE. I like MEMBERS ONLY because of the awesome lyrics("All the white folks shake their asses!"). In the song, all the rich kids and politicians shake their asses also. I also like MISSISSIPPI,CRASH AND BURN and THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD.
I used to love it..........2000-12-22
It's one of those CD's that has to hit you at the right time in your life for it to be appriciated and then once you grow out of it.... it's not as fun to listen to anymore... but if you like Sheryl and maybe want to branch out try Ani Difranco. I found Ani via another Sheryl fan which makes me grateful for my past ovbsession with SC.
I Think She is Moving Towards The Blues.......2000-03-14
I loved this album, highly listenable for die-hard fans. It can also draw in some new fans, from the beginning. My favorite songs are>>"Riverwide", "It Don't Hurt", "Anything But Down", and the beautiful bluesy ballad "The Difficult Kind". I think she is maturing more and more, probably until an album of hers explodes with perfection. Some songs are like stray tracks, but it's all good, it is worth your listening.
Three hits in a row........1999-09-02
I've loved all 3 of Sheryl Crow's CDs, but especially like the songwriting on this one. Listen to "The Difficult Time" a few times to realize what a powerful lyricist she is. Great job.
This is one of the best albums by sheryl crow,.......1999-08-22
This is one of the best releases by sheryl crow ever, she has always been and will continue to be a great artist both live and in the studio. Sheryl is an inspiration to me. Sheryl Crow is like god to me. She is the greatest modern pop artist ever.
