Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 22 & 27
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
With these two Mozart piano concertos, Alfred Brendel comes full circle. Gone are the days of pounding out Beethoven's "Hammerklavier"--back trouble has seen to that--and the late Schubert sonatas are now, after their triumphant release in early 2001, safely on their way. Brendel has now gone back to the expressive simplicity of Mozart's own farewell. The 27th concerto, Mozart's last for the piano, was written after three years of abject, mendicant poverty, yet to listen to its radiant finale here--played as though there wasn't a cloud in the sky--you'd never credit such a desperate provenance. In these new recordings, Brendel's lifelong pursuit of an orchestral richness of tone is beautifully vindicated: the woodwind colors Charles Mackerras extracts from his players find their perfect pianistic echo here. And when, in the second movement of K. 482, the strings come across in funereal darkness, Brendel has an appropriate answer for that, too. Pellucid without a trace of preciousness, these performances are in every respect flawless, and Brendel's own cadenzas manage to tickle the ear without disrupting the nobility of Mozart's dialogue. --Michael Church

Great Sound and Performance.......1999-12-16
This disc has demo quality sound and the ECO plays beautifully under Tate - one of my earliest purchases on CD and a wonderful disc to listen to over and over again...
One of the best of her piano concerto cycles.......1999-06-06
I love this performances because it's full of drive/momentum. Maybe the 3rd movt.(Rondo) of No.23 is one of the fastest performance without sounding shallow or superficial. Extremely good sound quality is also a plus.

truly exceptional CD.......2005-12-09
This CD blew me away! It contains two outstanding performances delivered with exquisite artistry. The sonics are spectacular --very detailed and airy, with great balance (intense!). The engineering is outstanding. (I did not expect to get such audiophile quality.) This CD has, in a word, "dimensionality".
I have always loved No. 22 and Brendel has delivered a magnificent rendition of it. The first movement is stately and the second movement ... well, simply to die for. His work is nicely integrated into the orchestra, which is also superb. Brendel brought some novel nuances to this piece, and I could relate immediately to his presentation of the cadenzas. (Sometimes, when you are used to a certain way, it is difficult to accept a new one; not so here.) Notably, I gained a new appreciation for No. 27 because of the way it is presented here. I was particularly impressed with the first movement ... totally. The vivaciousness and playfulness of the third movement come across nicely. There is great virtuosity in the playing and the interpretation of both concertos. Brendel performs here with elegance, power, and subtlety, in proper proportions, as well as with keen insight.
Brendel is one of the great Mozart pianists..........2002-05-22
...and he shows why here.
Brendels LATEST Mozart records... his newer ones is even better than before because of more distinct, secure play... Brendel means Mozart "business" on this one :-) like he also do on his no. 20 and his Mozart sonata disc from this year.
Brendel is simply one of the best Mozart pianists ever.
Brendel togheter with Mackerras and Scottish Chamber orchestra has something to do with his improvement on his latest Mozart piano concert discs, I think, and they all play marvellous on this one so its a great conductor too on it and other great muscisians in this orchestra.
Sound is very good and you cant go wrong with this if you like to have a piano concerto record by Mozart without "Elvira Madigan" (Andante on Mozart piano concerto no 21).
No 20, 21, 22 (22 is on this disc) and 25 is in my opinion Mozarts greatest but no 27 (27 is on this disc) is not bad either :-)
In sum... a very good well played Mozart piano concerto disc probably lasting a lifetime.
Another Great CD of Brendel's View Of Mozart Piano Concertos.......2001-11-25
Brendel's latest travesal of Mozart's 22nd and 27th Piano Concertos is a dynamic, invigorating set of performances. Brendel's playing is simply sublime, replete with elegance and warmth. Sir Charles Mackerras and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra provide ample support, with Mackerras drawing out the right orchestral textures to accompany Brendel's exquisite performances. Brendel's playing seems a bit more refined than his earlier traversal with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields ensemble; I honestly wonder whether Brendel is at work at yet another series of recordings of virtually all of Mozart's piano concertos. Hopefully, that is indeed the case.

Mendelssohn's First Piano Concerto is much more popular, and more frequently played, than his Second. When you listen to this disc, you'll find out why. The First is an inspired piece with memorable themes, enjoyable but not ostentatious display for the piano, and a great sense of fun. The Second has unmemorable themes and a similar style without conveying the sense of fun. For that matter, I've never thought much of the Capriccio brillant, a rather empty showpiece. For those who like lesser Mendelssohn better than I do, this disc is very well played throughout, although the piano takes Howard Shelley's attention away from conducting and the orchestral playing isn't as distinctive as the piano playing. --Leslie Gerber

Fantastic Recording.......2003-03-03
This stunner is worth the Penguin Rosette and recommendation from Gramophone magazine. The playing is stunning. The orchestra is in finest form. And the digital recording is fabulous - crystal clear, well balanced. No muddy piano parts. The notes are clearly heard and played at a thrilling pace. Very very highly recommended.
Outstanding Pianist.......2000-12-26
Listening to Howard Shelley and Felix Mendelssons Piano Concerto Nr 1 brought back great memories when I was a youth. The sad yearning especially Molto Allegro Con Fuoco is particularly hauntingly beautiful. Give it a try get the kids to bed put your feet up get a bottle of good beer say a McEwans and a glass of good sherry and listen to Howard direct and Play this hauntingly beautiful concerto. It remind me somewhat of some of Mozart's earlier Piano Concerto's .

Fischer's Mozart Reissued Again.......2004-07-29
EMI has gotten more mileage with reissues than any other classical label. Sure they have the greatest archive of recordings in the history of music sitting in their vaults, but how many times do they have to reissue the very same performances on CD? Annie Fischer's legendary 1959 accounts of Mozart's 21st & 22nd Piano Concertos, with conductor Wolfgang Sawallisch conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra, were previously available (and probably still can be found used in the Amazon Marketplace) on a 2CD set that originally went for half the price of this title. That EMI Seraphim two-fer also featured Fischer's 1960 recordings of Mozart's 20th & 23rd Concertos with Sir Adrian Boult conducting the same orchestra, performances that have yet to resurface on CD. In all, this is certainly a five-star performance by Ms. Fischer, but EMI gets a one-star deduction for continually putting a new face on the same classic product and charging the consumer more money to boot.

Customer Reviews:
sounds like Beethoven but still wonderful.......2006-02-02
Barenboim's tone is firm and has a good edge around it. It reminds me piano's sound comes from a hammer hitting a string - even when he plays softly. More punch and clarity compared to any other version. His interpretation is romantic and virtuosic.
Berlin Phil's sound is rich and grand - exactly opposite of the historically informed performance practice. A little pompous but still top-notch.
Perahia and Brendel both offer more intimate renditions. Especially Perahia's playing has everything you ever want for Mozart - lyrical, lively, tender, bittersweet......simply heart-stopping. If the recording quality was above average, his recordings would be undoubtedly my first choice. Brendel's playing is insightful and full of beautiful moments. But he tends to be too deliberate to create peculiar tones he wants and to deliver more legato.
If you think you will enjoy a very well-played and extremely well-recorded Mozart's concertos with a slight hint of Beethoven, Barenboim is your guy.
Magnificent Mozart by Barenboim and the Berlin Philharmonic.......2004-03-28
The Mozart piano concertos are some of the most exraordinary pieces from the Viennese Classical period written by a composer who was a master of both keyboard and orchestral writing. The Concertos Nos. 20 through 23 represent the height of his achievements in this genre and include the D minor, k466; C major k467 (Elvira Madigan), E-flat major k482; and A major, k 488.
Written at age 30, in these four works Mozart goes above and beyond using the concerto for simple entertainment and dazzling keyboard virtuosity. Each is a carefully crafted piece and different from the rest. The D minor (No. 20) is one of only two concertos Mozart wrote in the minor mode: its first movement features an ominously mysterious opening and many sudden dynamics; the second movement 'romance' has a fast section in the middle; and the last movement has a triumphant coda in D major. The opening to the C major (No. 21) is march-like with sparkling trills in the wind parts; its second movement is probably the most famous movement of any of the concertos with the aching duple vs. triple theme--the piano plays a melody in eighth notes while the strings strum their chords in triplets). And I could go on talking about each movement of each concerto.
The Berlin Philharmonic goes about doing what it does best, namely being one of the world's best orchestras. The sound is warm and lush, notes are perfectly in tune, and colors from both the winds and strings are beautiful and well-balanced (and the wind parts are especially prominent in these concertos, so this is an important note) . The Berliners command every color, from the suspenseful opening of No. 20 to the heroic opening of No. 22 to the simple melody at the outset of No. 23. Barenboim is also showing his best, shaping phrases of half notes and quarter notes as deftlly and beuatifully as his easily dispatched sixteenth note runs. He is expressive while staying in the range of what Mozart's music naturally allows. Barenboim is conducting as well, as has become a relatively common performance practice for these pieces. (Mostly, Barneboim plays his own cadenzas but also uses cadenzas by Mozart and Beethoven where standard.)
As for Teldec, the engineers have done a remarkable job; the liner notes could be better. These are some of the best Mozart piano concertos I have ever heard and at 2 CDs for the price of one, I recommend that you dig in and enjoy!
A near perfect Classical listening experience........1999-07-01
Although I'm not an expert on Mozart, I feel that this is the most moving, well performed CD that I've listened too in years. Many of the themes are well known but not always associated with these three piano concertos. Add the fact that the sound quality is quite good and you have a near perfect classical listening experience.

Around Mozart 250th anniversary!.......2006-01-26
These two live concerts under the spellingbaton of themaster Casals, finds the perfect blending around two emblematic and fundamental Piano Concertos ever written.
With the 20th Mozart undertakes a fabulous musical journey. The gloomy character of the First Movement of the 20 th Concerto, its intrinsic introspective mood and the harmonic richness and modulations becomes of it an universe in its own. Lefebre made a fine reading, even I still convinced about the supreme performance given by Myra Hess under Walter baton in a live performance (Music and Arts).
In what concerns Serkin 'approach, he makes an accurate and precise performance lacking perhaps, the underlined humor so typical of the last Movement. A very recomended acquistion, being my favorite recording Edwin Fisher playing and conducting the Royal Danish Orchestra.

Presumably Casals, like the rest of us, knew what name he wanted to be known by. The front of this record-box has, writ large, his signature `Pau Casals', and then the printed material refers to him throughout as `Pablo'. Pau is the Catalan version of the name, and his use of it was a statement of his opposition to Franco's Spain. Most of my records of Rubinstein, who signed himself `Arthur', give his name as Artur. Precisely what psychological and sociological characteristics this exhibits, and on the part of whom, I'm not sure.
These two Mozart concerto performances date from June and July respectively in 1951, with Casals conducting the Perpignan Festival orchestra. The recorded quality is only adequate and does not allow a 5-star rating, but music-lovers eager to take advantage of the current spate of reissues from a generation or two ago are not going to be much bothered by that. The soloist in the awesome D minor concerto is Yvonne Lefebure, and I learn from the accompanying leaflet that this fine performance is being released here for the very first time, the reason apparently being that it defeated the intellectual resources of Columbia to find a filler for it in the LP format. It is a very fine performance indeed, easily of the class of the accounts of the work that I have from Richter, Katchen and Michelangeli, although as you might expect less well recorded. I find the first movement cadenza by Fred Goldbeck extremely disconcerting (what was wrong with Beethoven's?), but in all essential respects this is a notable rendition of that most sinister of Mozart's instrumental compositions. Any performer of this concerto has to face up to the ultimately hopeless comparison with Serkin. He recorded it twice that I know of before his final swansong series with Abbado and the LSO. In his version with Ormandy he takes a very involved and dramatic approach to the first movement. Lefebure's approach is nearer to the way Serkin later went about the work with Szell - the drama understated and the sense of menace less overt. This is the way I like it best, and if Lefebure isn't quite Serkin, well, who is? It is a performance I shall be playing repeatedly for its own sake. Where I miss Serkin most is in the finale, but it would not necessarily have been wise for anyone else to try doing it that way.
In the big K482 in E flat, the biggest of all Mozart's concertos, we have Serkin himself. The first movement is oddly uncharacteristic from him. It has an almost improvisatory feel to it, and none the worse for that. He even supplies his own cadenzas. Among the treasures of my collection is another performance, very famous indeed in its day, from Annie Fischer, distinguished in one of many ways by a really superlative partnership from Sawallisch and the Philharmonia. It represents some kind of ultimate in a certain idiom of Mozart-playing - refined, exquisite and aristocratic. It does not in any sense at all reduce the stature of the piece, and I would not be willing to say that Serkin or anyone else ever did it better to my way of thinking. Right at the end of the slow movement Serkin and Casals produce something quite out of the ordinary, the sort of revelation that only the very greatest are capable of. Otherwise it's very much a question of taste and temperament. I greatly like the slowish speed that Serkin and Casals take in the last movement, but I'm still in love with Fischer. I sense that words are rather failing me, but after all this is Mozart.

The greatest 22nd ever recorded. I hesitate to use the word 'definitive' - but feel as though I must with respect to this K.482!

Enthralling masterworks, budget price.......2001-11-25
Here's a solid bundle of Mozart's most august work at a price low enough to stuff the stockings. Annie Fischer renders these four canonical Mozart concertos with unfussy polish and grace. The sound on disc one, containing the merrier Concertos Nos. 21 and 22, is somewhat poorer than on the second, but the sensuous ebullience remains. The stormy D minor concerto is interpreted without overweening pathos, while the central movement of No. 23 exhibits shattering despair. You'll want more recordings of these works of course, but (especially at its bargain price) it would hardly be excusable not to add this lovely set.
Wonderful recording at a fantastic price!.......1999-01-27
Marvelous musicianship exhibited in this double CD set. Fischer's interpretation is beautiful with wonderful, flowing lines. Analog recording but with clean clear sound. Liner notes are scant but, with such mainstream works as these, they're not required. A great value at four times the price. In short, a steal.

Well-functioning team.......2005-01-02
The Naxos team consisting of pianist Jenö Jandó, the chamber orchestra Concentus Hungaricus and conductor Mátyás Antal came together again in May, June and July 1990 in order to record this, the sixth volume of the Naxos Complete Mozart Piano Concertos, and it seems to me that they had lost nothing of the impetus created by the previous issues, most of which were definite five-star material. Concerto No. 22 is marked by its writing for winds, including clarinets, and my impression was of a well-functioning team where the whole is more than the sum of its parts: beautiful music, and (for Naxos) exceptionally well recorded. Concerto No. 11, probably written in January 1783, also has some interesting passages for the woodwind, this time without clarinets, and demonstrates that mixture of galant and learned, of playful glee and meditative melancholy which was to make Mozart so popular. Although this CD was not, for some reason, given three stars in the Penguin Good CD Guide, the recording quality sounds to me just as good as on the previous volume, and if you are not particular about listening to Mozart on period instruments, this disc could be just what you are looking for.
Lively and Enthusiastic Accounts.......2002-03-09
Jeno Jando is certainly a wonderful pianist who plays these two Mozart concertos with much enthusiasm and warmth. No.11 (K.413) dates from Mozart's "early" days in Vienna, but it is very likable. No.22 (K.482) dates from about 3 years later, late 1785. Some have described this work as the "Queen" of all his Piano Concertos. The woodwind writing is absolutely marvelous, particularly in the middle movement. Clarinets are used that add beautiful tonal color to this great concerto. The sound quality is very good, and the performance is polished. Only reason I gave this 4 stars is because, although very good, it is not quite up to par with Murray Perahia's versions with the English Chamber Orchestra. But still, at this price, this release would be difficult to match.
