Album Description
Montreal based early music ensemble Masques is one of the most exciting ensembles performing today. An excellent Warlock compilation!.......2003-04-19

Ian Partdidge's "The Curlew" is as good a performance as you will find of this song cycle. Also among my favorites are "Bethlehem Down," an utterly haunting & touching Christmas carol; a wonderful arrangement of the song "The Lady's Birthday;" also another carol, "Where riches is everlastingly."

Everything on this album is simply excellent. If you are already a Warlock devotee, you will be very happy with this; if you are just getting introduced to Warlock, you could not have picked a better CD!

A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27

She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.

Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.

This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.

This volume exceeded my expectations. The string section of the Royal Ballet Sinfonia performs beautifully under the very capable direction of David Lloyd-Jones (who has given us several excellent disc on Naxos, including works by Bax, Bliss, Holst, and Delius).

As for the selections, they may be classified as miniatures but they are all full of delightful melodies and wonderful invention. For example, John Rutter, best known for his choral works, provides us with a wonderful four movement suite of folksong settings. Each movement is a delight and the rest of the works are in a similar style.

Another wonderful release from Naxos which is quickly becoming a champion of the British catalog.

In this wonderful offering, David Lloyd-Jones leads the Royal Ballet Sinfonia in short pieces by British composers who never quite attained the worldwide reputations of Elgar or Britten but have contented themselves to aim perhaps not always as high but to delight even more. (Some of Gibb's symphonies and songs are available on Naxos and Marco Polo labels.)

So while names such as Orr, Melachrino, Dodd, Gibbs, Cordell, Lyon, Douglas, and Lane might not enjoy high recognition as some of their compatriots, you will enjoy selections from their outputs nonetheless and feel as I do to seek out other works by some of these artists.

Have the best of both worlds on this CD - 2 very talented Elizabethan composers played by possibly the 2 finest lutenists ever recorded. Accomplished soloists in their own right, O'Dette and Lindberg showcase their exquisite ability to to delight with individual skills and yet seamlessly compliment and blend. A must-have for any Early Music collection.
