Erlkönig: The Art of the Lied [Enhanced]

Editorial Reviews

This record is a jewel box: wherever you open it, you find precious gems and pearls. The program includes the greatest songs in the literature; although they are familiar, you cannot hear them often enough. Four singers who not only possess some of the most beautiful voices of our time, but also are among the foremost interpreters of this repertoire, perform these songs. The recordings, originally made between the 1960s and 1980s, capture the singers at their incomparable peak; the differences between their vocal and interpretive styles add greatly to the disc's fascination. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's technique and breath control are incredible; he can brighten and darken his voice; his pianissimo floats, his climaxes ring. Always famous for his intellectual approach and for giving equal attention to poetry and music, Fischer-Dieskau sings here unusually spontaneously and free of "word-painting." Fritz Wunderlich's voice has a uniquely melting, yearning lyricism and a radiant, soaring top; his expression is simple and direct. He subtly changes tempo and vocal color for contrast in the strophic Schubert songs, and makes Schumann's "Ich grolle nicht" sound unrelentingly angry--contradicting the text, but following the musical feeling. Christa Ludwig brings out the character and mood of each song, and sings with great inwardness and intensity; her voice is dark, warm, and variable, her pacing perfect. Jessye Norman's diction is no less admirable than the German singers', and her voice is simply glorious. She knows exactly how to use its infinite color and variation--its thrilling, luminous glow, and intense expressiveness--as an interpretive tool, and makes it converse, caress, demand, exult, smile, and laugh. The pianists, two of whom are eminent conductors, are absolutely marvelous. --Edith Eisler

Deutsche Grammophon is lucky in that World War II didn't slow classical recordings in Germany as it did in the United States but stimulated them: It was essential for wartime morale. Thus, if you can get past any repugnance related to these recordings' genesis, there's a huge amount to enjoy. There's a disc of lieder by all the prewar greats (Franz Volker, Tiana Lemnitz, Erna Berger, and Heinrich Schlusnus), a disc of Wagner featuring young Hans Hotter, opera and operetta performances by Berger and Helge Roswaenge, and a disc showing how the German singers gave Italian opera a distinctively Nordic but highly communicative edge. The set is crowned by a complete Winterreise that was recorded by Peter Anders in 1945 (and sounds it): the cultivated tenor's anguished performance embodies a Germany facing the abyss. --David Patrick Stearns

      5 out of 5 stars Incomparable.......2002-02-04

I have looked for the CD reissue of the original Electrola recording for years and am very glad to have finally found it.

There is no better rendering of these beautiful, exquisitely romantic songs anywhere. Fischer-Dieskau has made them his own and, as usual, he and Karl Engel so well anticipate each other that it sounds as if they are reading each other's minds. It's difficult to believe that Brhams himself would not have been very well pleased.

Obviously, This was recorded many years ago. The sound is barely passable.
I've read about her and supposedly she was da "BANG" way back when. I've never ben a great fan of these old recordings since they often times tell little of the actual greatness of these singers. Her biography was more fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars Quick Silver! Forever, Germaine!.......2006-09-24

Aha, I have found a soprano that had it all, everything: physical and vocal beauty, the softest and roundest pianissimi ever without being fake or narrow, a gigantic middle voice, power, passion! Germaine had enough of everything. Lubin is without question unbeatable. The timbre of her voice is interesting, but beautiful. She has enormous volume, yet the sound is very light, it moves fast, like mercury or quick silver. Her voice flows, but the metal in the sound, the depth of the sound, the height of the sound is just completely unique and utterly impressive.

The Siegfried aria "Ewig war" is so beautiful and delicate, with a high C that was plain too easy for any dramatic soprano to think about singing, but there it was. The trill? Perfection!!! I agree with Hitler that she probably was the best Isolde in the world. I don't think that there is or was anyone to touch La Lubin! Even the Faust aria is sublime. She was GREAT!

Her life was NOT easy and it is difficult to disassociate her musicality from the tragedy she was forced to live; imprisonment, the death of her son, a certain lack of acclaim from France, and a divine appreciation for platonic love "I fell in love with men spiritually, they fell in love with my body.", which she could not reciprocate. All that must have been dreadful to live with.

Ok, Madame Lubin -- no one ever surpassed you in my book! You remain a Goddess of Art and even old France had to eventually admit that. Brava!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Voices of the Century.......2002-03-18

Onegin was a true contralto whose warmth and breadth of tone was astonishing. More extraordinary is the quality of these transfers which capture the luxurience of her voice exquisitely. The eveness throughout her range and fluency of coloratura have no equal today in her voice range. Add to this her seamless phrasing and phenominal breath control and one is left grasping for more superlatives. Onegin's Deliah arias are incomparably sensual. The "Hugenots" selection is light and charming without losing any of her smokiness. And her fleetness in the Donizetti and Mozart put to the lie the notion that contraltos cannot sing intricate fioratura. If you love vocal splendor, then you must hear this album! You will be as enchanted as I am.

4 out of 5 stars One of the greatest mezzos of the century.......2001-02-01

Sigrid Onegin was one of the greatest mezzos of the century. Her voice was beautiful, her diction clear, her technique and musicality excellent. Her répertoire was extensive. Her vocal color would be appreciated even today, which is rare for singers of that era. She would have the opera world at her feet today.

5 out of 5 stars The Leading Singers Of Lieder.......2005-10-26

This is THE album to own if you are a huge fan of German Lieder. It is a lengthy compilation of the most renowed Lieder that is still sung in recital today. The featured artists are the world's greastest German Lieder singers. The title refers to the Schubert song about the dreaded Elf King who manages to take a young boy's life as he hallucinates on a horse ride and dies in his father's arms. Other songs are taken from Goethe poems and others are about nature and aspects of love. It is remarkable set and you should praise God that this album is still in print.

German Lieder or "art song" was a musical innovation in the 19th century. It was invented by Franz Schubert and continued in the works of Brahms and Mahler. This recording is a box set that is pretty pricy but worth every cent. It features four leading exponents of German art song- baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, tenor Fritz Wunderlich, mezzo soprano Christa Ludwig and soprano Jessye Norman. Dieskau is still hailed as the most versatile and most intellectual baritone of his time- the 60's. He sang a variety of roles in opera- Scarpia, Don Giovanni, etc. His voice is dramatic, flexible, powerful and moving. He can color his voice in Lieder to emphasize the dramatic texts. In Die Erlkoning he is both the voice of the anguished father and the dying, hallucinating, fragile boy. He darkens his voice to sound like the father, softens his voice to sound like the child and makes an eerie nearly falsetto voice for the evil Elf King. In other songs, he oozes elegance, masculinity and romance. He phrases each line with orutund, rich, vigorous, a tad meldoramatic but integral, effective tones to capture the spirit of each Lied. He is forever the Wanderer, the Fisherman in Die Forelle and the voice that even Schubert must have envisioned. Dieskau is unfortunately, mostly famous for these songs and his operatic roles are not very well-received. This was quite a shame because he was excellent in both Lied and opera.

Fritz Wunderlich, next to the darker, heftier voice of Dieskau, sounds like a prince. He has a beautiful ring to his voice, and his pianissimi are to die for. His is a charming voice and this is the point of singing Lieder to sound charming and to seduce the listener into a world of color and vocal painting. Wunderlich darkens his voice at times to potray anger. Opposite his tenor voice is the sultry, generously endowed mezzo soprano Christa Ludwig. Hers is a voice of pure spirituality. She makes the songs sound like sacred pieces. Ludwig enjoyed a fine career in opera - Adalgisa, Brangane in Tristan and Isolde, the witch in Hansel and Gretel, operetta, and the bigger roles like a superb Leonore in Fidelio. Equally spiritual but far more dramatic is Jessye Norman's huge, soaring voice. She accomplished a recital career long before taking on big opera roles like Carmen, Leonore in Fidelio, Salome, Ariadne of Naxos and others. She sings great Gospel and sacred music. Her command of the German tongue is commendable. She produces big but beautiful sounds. She can convey many emotions and she knows this music and loves this music. Kudos for the record label that issued this album.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Recording, Tremendous Student Resource!.......2003-02-07

"Erlkonig - The Art of the Lied" is a fabulous compilation of perhaps the best recordings ever made of the most famous lied ever written. Dietrich Fischer-Diskau, Fritz Wunderlich, and Jessye Norman offer impeccable interpretations of their selected songs. I must differ, however, with another reviewer on the quality of Jessye Norman's singing represented on this CD: it is splendid! It is the tracks recorded by Christa Ludwig which can be hooty and pitch-approximate, especially "Gretchen am Spinnrade." But, all-in-all, the CD is still 5-star. Apart from purchasing Fischer-Diskau's complete recordings of Schubert's lied (which can cost hundreds of dollars!), this is the best representation of German Lied out there.
But, there's more! This special CD, "CD-pluscore", if played on a PC displays the songs as the artists sing them. This is a tremendous tool for the student of singing. The artist's musical interpretation can be studied. Passages can be repeated to aid more rapid learning. The music is actually seen to help improve musical literacy, even if only rhythmically as the piece scrolls through. Just check it out!
"Erlkonig - The Art of the Lied" stands among the best as a top-flight recording. In addition, it offers its listeners a deeper and possibly more rewarding experience with its "CD-pluscore" feature. I give it my highest recommendation! I have visited the Deutsche Grammaphon website and they list 12 "CD-pluscore" recordings. I would suspect they are all of the same quality as Erlkonig. I have just ordered two of them through Amazon.

          4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2002-01-23

This is indeed an excellent collection of German Lieder, featuring three astounding interpreters of the repertoire. However, the fourth interpreter, the sometimes-great Jessye Norman leaves a bit to be desired. She does have an excellent sound and good delivery, but some of her trademark barking shows up in a couple of Brahms characteristically mellow pieces (one cannot sing Brahms as if it is Shoenberg). That is really my only complaint.

But that is no reason not to buy this CD. Fritz Wunderlich's extremely uptempo interpretation of the crowd-pleasing "Ich grolle nicht" alone is worth half the price of the CD, and the other half is more than compensated for by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's incomparable performance of Schubert's "Erlkonig", the disc's namesake. Other highlights from these two singers are Wunderlich's subtle, sublime "An die Musik," and Fischer-Dieskau's playful "Marienwurmchen"

Christa Ludwig's beautiful soprano soars in her interpretations of Schubert, particularly "Gretchen am spinnrade" and "Lachen und Weinen." Her delivery is nearly flawless, and even my mother (who hates sopranos for some reason or another) enjoys listening to her singing.

I would HIGHLY suggest buying this CD if you are studying voice. If you are, you will undoubtedly be studying several of the pieces featured here, and the immaculate renditions presented on this disc will undoubtedly be of great use to you.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Performances of Great Music -- and More.......2000-12-07

This compilation of 19th-century art songs from Germany -- Lieder to the initiate -- would be a treasure even if all it contained were the marvelous performances of these little gems taken from the DG back-catalog, with great artists like Fischer-Dieskau and Jessye Norman present. But besides that, it is also a CD-ROM (at least MY copy is) containing editable sheet music for these selections, translations and notes on the composers, and interactive features that will be especially useful to students and singers. This new feature, called CD-pluscore, may also appeal to ordinary listeners who'd like to go just a bit deeper in their understanding of this music.
