Born in Zwolle, Holland, in 1944, Ton Koopman decided very early in his musical studies to specialize in the 17th and 18th centuries, using authentic instruments combined with a performing style based on sound scholarship.

Album Description
The acclaimed series of complete Bach cantatas with The Amsterdam Baroque, conducted by Ton Koopman and originally begun on the now defunct Erato label, has been rescued by Challenge Classics. This fourth volume is devoted exclusively to secular cantatas of the Leipzig period from 1720-1734.

The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, founded in 1979 by Ton Koopman, are a group of musicians from all over the world with a particular passion for the baroque. Their recordings have won numerous awards. Begun in 1994, this series was called "the recording project of the ninties" by The Guardian in England, and was awarded the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis "Echo Klassik" in Germany in 1997. The series will continue to feature the scholarly contributions of Professor Christoph Wolff, one of the world's leading experts on the music of Bach.

For a listener with an interest in German Baroque music and centering on the J.S.Bach period the 2 volumes are a wealth of information. The selections are very well choosen to make a representative span of both time and area.The disc is crisply recorded and the players are expertly directed ,responding with a virile performance giving zest to a possible mundane task.

Cantatas on Set. Vol. 8 is Great........2005-12-20

At last, Koopman's re-release of the 3-Disc Set Complete Cantatas Vol. 8 is available on Amazon.com. But, where is the description of what's on it? I will provide that below.

Firstly, I must include this series of re-releases on Koopman's own label, Antoine Marchand (though more costly than when on Erato in the 90s), contains the very well interpreted music of Bach as well as valuable scholarly research of Bach's Cantatas by Professor Christoph Wolff, a leading Bach scholar. Stephen Keavy leads the trumpet section performing the tasking parts in BWV 77 and 90 on this set.

Sam the Bach nut says that the Koopman collection is the best of the sets of all the cantatas.

Erato Now Gone, Let's Begin Again with Koopman's Cantatas.......2005-01-18

Anyone interested in these cantatas has likely discovered that they had been begun under the Erato label in the early 90's and were discontinued after volume 12, disconcerting some. Ton Koopman, unabashed, obtained his own label, continuing the series (which is planned to finish at volume 22), even returning to the early volumes in re-issues under the new Challenge Classics covering. This volume is the first re-issue and parallels the new releases in the series.

A side note for those who want only the sacred cantatas: volumes 4 & 5 are composed entirely of the secular cantatas.

The tempi have been slowed slightly from the original Erato releases, but, have no fear, Koopman knows what he is doing. "Ich hatte viel Bekummernis" alone is worth the money, and Kai Wessel's counter-tenor is a treat throughout. Reformed Protestant theology, the counterpoint of Bach, and the wonder of the Baroque era, all contribute to a series to which the initiate will turn often for pleasure.

The 4 cantatas performed on this disc were all composed in 1707-08,when Bach was in the first flush of youth, in his early 20's. He was writing cantatas for every Sunday service and at the same time was organist and choirmaster at a church in Muhlhausen. In Bach's day the 4 soloists would have been members of the small chorus; in this recorded performance the soloists serve, together, as the chorus. In the end, we have to say that Bach wrote his most sublime music for the church; but most important, his writings have a spiritual power, a solid strength and sincerity that cannot be traced to technique, but to the inspiration of pure genius. And the 4 soloists on this disc bring out very clearly his greatness!!!!There are quartets, duets, trios and solos all accompanied expertly by the Purcell Quartet. In addition we have recorders, oboe and bassoon to add to the overall instrumental "color". Some of the high points for me: "In deine Hande.." Michael Chance (countertenor solo);"Den Tod....." Emma Kirkby & Chance duet. It's all great music and a must if you are an Early Music fan!
