Album Description
The composer of such Broadway hits as The Student Prince, New Moon and The Desert Song was born in Hungary, educated in Vienna and studied engineering. But his musical gifts were recognized, and he came to New York at age 22. In between menial odd-jobs, he made his presence known to the point where the Schubert brothers engaged him in 1914 to become their house composer, eventually producing 17 shows and hundreds of songs (many for Al Jolson) by 1917. That was the year that Maytime, based on a play by Walter Kollo, had its premiere. Romberg changed the locale from Europe to old New York, and the work was a great success and ran for nearly 500 performances. Though Maytime achieved great popularity as a 1937 Jeanette MacDonald/Nelson Eddy film, it only used two original Romberg numbers. Here is a chance to experience this tuneful, charming operetta of lost and found love in a sparkling performance, the kind we expect from the wonderfully talented Ohio Light Opera ! Company members.

Selections from the Greatest Voice of the Last Hundred Years.......2007-03-13

Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.

I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.

A Must Have .......2006-12-12

I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.

extract from most important LPs. Brilliant sound quality from RCA. Also included are soundtrack recordings from some of his movies. The are several reissues from Mario Lanza but this one is a collection you should have.

WONDERFUL!!!!!.......2005-10-19

The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Tauber for the first buyer.......1999-01-02

Richard Tauber was, in my opinion, the most seductive and complex singer of this century. His voice was excellent, but not in itself, just as a vehicle for an infinity of shadings, in a plethora of styles. He was arguably the greatest ever operetta singer but his gifts were perfectly expressing themselves in lied, in popular song and in a great part of the opera repertoire ("heldentenor" excepted). Like Kreisler in violin playing, Tauber represented the essence of the Viennese spirit. His vocal specialties included the sweteest mezzavoce or headvoice one could hope for. He was accessible and highly refined in the same time. For the very low price of this Gala CD, you can taste the complex artistry of Richard Tauber, both in his German (better) period and in the "English" one. The reason I'm giving 4, not 5 stars to this CD is that I believe his all-German CD concotions to be more valuable. But for this price...

Lanza in (mostly) top form.......2004-11-28

This is a "twofer" CD, consisting of the 1955 soundtrack to the movie Serenade and the 1956 Cavalcade of Show Tunes album. Before I go any further, however, I should acknowledge that I was one of the liner note writers for this release. But I have no financial interest in the CD, and am simply reviewing it here because to date no one else has commented on it!

Serenade marked Lanza's return to films after an absence of three years, and revealed a voice that had darkened considerably, while still retaining its brilliant upper register. Stylistically, this is also a much-improved artist in many respects from the sometimes-wayward tenor of the early 1950s. Anyone who compares Lanza's superbly operatic renditions here of Amor Ti Vieta, Lamento di Federico, and O Paradiso with his earlier versions (all featured on the CD Mario Lanza Sings Opera Arias and Duets) will immediately detect the new-found control in his singing.

That's not to say that all of the Serenade material is outstanding. Lanza's renditions of Nessun Dorma, O Soave Fanciulla, Di Quella Pira, and the title song are below par, with the tenor uncharacteristically strained in the upper register and rough in his approach. But redeeming everything are the oustanding renditions of the arias mentioned in the previous paragraph, together with Lanza's sensitive singing of Di Rigori Armato from Der Rosenkavalier, a superb Torna a Surriento, and an unsurpassed Dio! Mi Potevi Scagliar from Otello. Lanza also recorded the Act III duet from Otello with Licia Albanese for this film, but time constraints have reduced it to a brief extract here. (The entire duet, however, can be heard on the aforementioned Arias & Duets CD.)

The other album featured here showcases the romantic side of Lanza. Beautifully recorded, Cavalcade includes passionate renditions of Yours is My Heart Alone, Only a Rose, Will You Remember, and other selections from operetta and musical comedy. Although Lanza may indeed be *too* zestful here for some tastes, vocally at least, he is at the height of his powers. The voice is rich and round - gloriously consistent throughout its registers - and the abundance of effortless B flats, Bs, and even a high C reveal a tenor in formidable form.

Highly recommended.

Sweethearts is a sweet album indeed!.......2002-01-18

How delicious that the two superb singers on this lovely tribute to Macdonald and Eddy are actually married. Futral is well-known from her opera appearances in the US and abroad (she starred in Andre Previn's Streetcar Named Desire and as Baby Doe at City Opera, I believe), but baritone Steven White is less well-known. This seems odd, as the man has an utterly fluent baritone and he is spot-on in the style of Nelson Eddy: same masculine timbre and boy-scout-like sturdy diction. Reports in Opera News have it that this singer is also an opera conductor and is engaged now by many US companies--if true, and he stops singing, it's our loss, for sure.
This is a darling collaboration, and the Newport label is to be congratulated for avoiding the cloying and yet not fearing to offer the listener some of the very best-known duos and solos which the operetta immortals brought us decades ago. Bravo!!

I recently had the priveledge of meeting Ms. Futral and Mr. White, and they are as wonderful in person as they are on this album!

What a wonderful collaboration! Both Mr. White and Ms. Futral are superior solo vocalists, yet this husband/wife pair complement each other very well. I'm looking forward to more of the same!
