These performances of Dvorák's two beloved chamber-music works are impeccable in technique, radiant in tone, unanimous in spirit, and deeply expressive. The violinists, who are brothers, alternate on first fiddle, giving the Quartet two equally strong leaders. The violist and cellist are wonderful, and Serkin fits into the group like a glove on the hand. It has been said that Dvorák's American compositions were influenced by African American and Indian folk music, but the Quartet, written in Iowa, sounds no less Czech than the Quintet, written in Bohemia, and, despite its general cheerfulness, has a strong tinge of homesickness. The players bring out its wistful nostalgia, which rises to passionate intensity in the slow movement, as well as its lightness, charm, and exuberance. In the Quintet, the balance between piano and strings is admirable; every line stands out clearly. The players' tempos are flexible, their liberties always dictated by expressive needs. They never rush, taking time to linger lovingly at magic moments; the tricky rhythms work perfectly. As they're completely at home with the Czech idiom, their deep affection for the music comes through in their warmth, emotional involvement, and unfailing expressiveness. --Edith Eisler

I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Narration with music.......2006-01-07

I ordered this CD because of the price, and quickly found out why it is a cheap one. The narration is fine, but it is spoken over the music, and the music is just excerpts except for the featured selections at the end of the CD, which is all of four pieces. This is a great CD for the car - a little audio learning lesson, and does give a good intro into some of Dvoraks most famous pieces. But, it is no Carl Haas rendition.

Superb!.......2003-03-04

Back in "Iron Curtain" times it was by no means easy to hear Soviet-bloc artists in the U.S., and recordings really established international reputations over here. And based on available recordings it was generally conceded that the two great Czechoslovak string quartets were the Janacek and the Smetana, the former based in Moravia (Brno), the latter in Bohemia (Prague). The heyday of the Janacek Quartet was the 1950s and 1960s when these recordings were made for Deutsche Grammophon, British Decca and Westminster. About half were recorded in mono, the rest are stereo; but all are, technically speaking, very decently produced and wear their years lightly. Performance highlights for me are the Decca recordings of Dvorak and Haydn quartets; the DG recording of the Brahms piano quintet (with Eva Bernathova); and the stunning Westminster performance of the Mendelssohn Octet (where the Smetana Quartet joins in!). The great conductor Karl Bohm once declared that the Czech lands were the home of great string playing, and when you hear these recordings you sense the justness of that remark. These players produce an ineffable sweetness of sound that never cloys, and they phrase with an easy naturalness that, on every re-hearing, discloses new subtleties. No, this is not high-powered American string playing ala the Julliard Quartet; what the Janacek Quartet offers is a style and sound that is almost lost in today's internationalized musical performance world. Catch this set while you can; it's billed as a limited edition and many of the performances have been unavailable (in the U.S., at least) since the early 1960s. Space-saving soft box format and price are additional inducements, but these priceless recordings would be a bargain at twice the price DG is charging. Final note: no collection of the Janacek Quartet's work is complete without their stunning stereo recording of the two great quartets written by their namesake, currently available on a midprice Supraphon CD. Although an earlier, mono recording of the second Janacek quartet is included in the DG box, spend a little extra for the Supraphon CD just to get the Janacek Quartet's equally stunning performance of Janacek No. 1 ("Kreutzer Sonata" quartet). You won't regret the minor duplication, plus the Supraphon CD also includes a pleasant, "off the beaten path" quartet by 19th century Czech Romantic Vtislav Nowak as a substantial bonus. But for heaven's sake, don't hesitate to buy the DG collection right now!

Only the hard-hearted can be immune to Dvorak's music, with its endless flow of gorgeous melodies, rhythmic variety, and skilled writing that shows each instrument in a positive light. Given competent performances, the works on this disc cannot fail to please; given performances as technically proficient and in sync with Dvorak's musical idiom as the Jerusalem Quartet's, this CD virtually begs you to keep hitting the repeat button on your player. Right from the beginning of the disc--the tender violin melody at the start of the "American" Quartet--violinist Alexander Pavlovsky's lovely tone and ardent phrasing raise expectations met by the ensemble's stylish performance, vigorous rhythms, radiant soft playing, and wide dynamic range. Those qualities carry over to another late Dvorak masterpiece, the Op. 81 Piano Quintet, in which the group is joined by Stefan Vladar, whose sensitive pianism blends neatly with the Jerusalem's passionate strings. Fresh performances, excellent sound, great music add up to an enthusiastic recommendation. --Dan Davis

Surprisingly beautiful.......2000-11-08

Truly amazed that Dvorak, whose symphonies are outside of my range of appreciation (should I be ashamed of that? I don't know . . . ), wrote such lovely, evocative chamber music. I've listened to this set of 4 CDs repeatedly, with growing delight at the beauty of the music but also at the harmonious interplay between all the instruments -- but then the Lindsays are a fantastic quartet. I have heard no one better, live or recorded. They were my reason for purchasing this set, and their performance is astounding. The quartets and quintets here are marvellously melodious, with nothing strong or heavy-handed, so I found myself constantly questioning "Are you sure this is Dvorak?" While anything performed by the Lindsays is fabulous, I have to say that this collection really shows to advantage their precision and rendering skills and their wonderful coordination, so that the quartets especially are beautifully executed. A really fine CD, great for any collector who likes or loves string quartets.

An Extraordinary User-Friendly Multimedia Dvorák Biography.......2004-04-28

I have followed with interest the series of CDs explaining popular operas by Jeremy Siepmann, an American musicologist long resident in Britain. Each of those is a single CD with a spoken text interspersed with longish excerpts from the opera in question. This 4-CD set, though, is something else again. It is a combination of music/audio CDs with superimposed CD-ROM material (on the same discs). One plays the audio portion on your regular stereo equipment. When put in your PC or Mac CD drive, the CD-ROM portion of the discs brings up an extensive set of hyperlinked text materials as well as links to the CDs from which the musical examples are taken (all from the Naxos music recordings library, of course). Also included in the CD-ROM material is the full text of Siepmann's detailed biography of Dvorák. There is also a thick booklet that includes cast lists (various actors playing various important people in Dvorák's life), an extensive essay about the sociopolitical and cultural conditions extant during Dvorák's life, an longish essay about his major works and their significance, a graded listening plan, an article outlining recommended reading, biographical snippets about each of the important people in Dvorák's life, a chronological calendar of Dvorák's life, and an extensive glossary of musical and other pertinent terms.

Siepmann's four-and-a-half-hour exploration of Dvorák's life and works is in his wonted polished, often witty, prose. It is read gracefully by Siepmann himself. Dvorák is played by the suave-voiced British actor, Sean Barrett. The musical examples are extensive, often including complete movements, arias, etc., and are placed expertly within the flow of the text. Production values for this budget-priced set are quite high.

I will admit that I had a particular interest in this production as I grew up in a rural Oklahoma town settled by Bohemians (Czechs) and came to love some of Dvorák's music before even that of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. I've already recommended this set to the public schools and town library in my hometown.

I am not quite sure who the intended audience for this set is. Presumably there are those, like me, who are insatiable when it comes to increasing their knowledge of classical music, its composers and their sociocultural milieu. One also imagines that even in these days of decreasing support for music and music appreciation courses in our schools, there are teachers who could make wonderful use of this material for their students. Whoever the audience is, I cannot imagine a listener coming away from this set without a great deal more information and appreciation for the genius of Antonin Dvorák.
