In addition to volumes and volumes of church and chamber music, the astonishingly prolific Georg Philipp Telemann wrote a great many concertos--the most engaging of which are those for two or more solo instruments, often in interesting combinations. It must be said that many of these concertos are a bit lightweight, but they are lively and diverting--and Christopher Hogwood and the baroque-instrument specialists of the Academy of Ancient Music give them accomplished, persuasive performances. Among the tasty confections here are a vigorous concerto for three trumpets; a double concerto for recorder and transverse flute--in the 18th-century context, the old-fashioned and the newfangled side by side; and the "Concerto polonois" for string orchestra without soloists, based on rustic dance music Telemann heard in Poland as a young man. Then there's the gorgeous concerto for flute, oboe d'amore, and viola d'amore (the last two being lower-pitched versions of the oboe and viola): in the hands of Stephen Preston, Clare Shanks, and Monica Huggett, respectively, Telemann's music for these aptly named instruments brings to mind waking up on a bright sunny morning with your true love in your arms. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Bargain-priced CD!!.......2002-02-13

I originally purchased this disc as an EMI Classics Red Line release (I think I paid $5.99 for it). It was a steal then, and remains so today on the Seraphin line (simple a reissue of the same EMI Red Line release).

Maurice Andre is a fantastic trumpet player, and he simply shines on this recording (featuring the Academy of St. Martins on the Field under Sir Neville Marriner). Bargain-priced CDs tend to get the proverbial bum rap, but Seraphin (as usual) offers a first-rate recording that can compete with any full-priced release. I've listened to this disc at least 20 times, and I never tire of it. Andre and Marriner bring to life these works, some by lesser-known composers (like Stolzel, Telemann and Torelli). I can't think of a better introduction to these underrated Baroque artists (with the exception of Sony's 'Baroque in Italy' CD, which sadly is now out-of-print, too).

This recording, as with so many others, will not be available forever. Given the quality of the recording and beauty of the pieces, I strongly recommend purchasing this disc before it, too, goes out-of-print. It's a great disc at a great price, and would be a welcomed addition to any Classical music collection.

This is a great feel-good record. Music to reign by.

The Stölzel concerto for four instrumental choirs is a particular gem, a great piece to cue up and wake up in the morning to. There is nothing particularly deep or heavy here. All of these pieces are light, in major keys. They are well recorded and well played.

This CD is just a delight. If you enjoy Baroque, you will find this CD one of your favorites. It has a pleasant register and a lightness that is a pleasure to any ear. An excellent value.

a great selection of baroque favorites, but the sound quality, especially on the pachelbel canon, not great at all. for that reason, i cannot recommend getting it. what do you expect for five dollars, right !>? i would suggest spending a little more money and getting something that you can't bear to part with, for continued listening enjoyment.

An introduction to the best baroque music by famous composers.
Great sound on this CD. There are over 10 CD's in this Farorites collection, and this by far is one of the best ones.

If you like the classical sounds of music, then you will like this. Check out the samples on this page that they provide, that's the best way to review.

I'm not usually a classical listener kind of gal. The only reason I stumbled onto this cd is because my favorite tune from a movie is on it. Sarabande is also played on the movie Persuasion (author: Jane Austen). I wanted to have that tune. Followed the links and landed on the Baroque cd. Ordered it. Sarabande is my favorite, followed by Canon, four seasons: spring, etc. I love this cd! It feels happy and light. For me, as a writer and an animator, it adds extra emotional impact when creating as well as influencing my imagination more. I recommend this cd when people want to feel like spring.

Circumspect at first about buying any CD with a "best of" title, this one really exceeds expectations. Also bought the Vivaldi disc in this series which is likewise exceptional. With the caveat that "Ombra mai fu" is repeated in various of the "25 favorites" collections, I recommend these recordings wholeheartedly, especially in terms of cost per track.

"Canon" is the flagship piece on this CD, a lush arrangement that will move a strong man to tears. Almost as powerful are Bach's "Air on the G String" and of course, Handel's "Ombra mai fu". The disc ends on an up note with "Trumpet Voluntaire".

At this price, you can send "Baroque favorites" to every Classical music lover you know. I would recommend sending this CD even to people who don't like Classical...you might just change their minds.

The Baroque period (1600-1750) was one of the most important in the history of music because many of our modern musical forms come from this time. The baroque style is diverse, including such elements as contrast and a deep emotionalism. Although orchestras perform the songs, many individual instruments are highlighted. The baroque composers especially loved strings, the trumpet, and the oboe. The songs range from the vibrant and the lively to the slow and the sad. I have found this CD is excellent as background music for studying, reading, or driving in rush hour traffic, mainly because the music is calming and relaxing. Baroque masters such as Bach and Handel are still popular today and their songs are loved by many. Fans of popular music will recognize a few of the songs on this CD. "Air on the G String" (Bach) was used by Procol Harum in their song "A Whiter Shade of Pale." "Canon," one of the most popular baroque songs today, is often performed at weddings and has been incorporated into pop songs by artists such as the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Vitamin C, and Rod McKuen.

This CD is considered an introduction to baroque music. It includes some of the most famous composers and their best songs. For example, Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi each have three songs on this disc. The liner notes are sparse, but a brief history of baroque music is included. Because of the inexpensive price and the huge amount of music (25 songs, 74 minutes of music), I highly recommend this for anyone who already loves the baroque style or wants an excellent introduction to this beautiful music.

That is how I describe Maurice Andre's sound. So smooth and suave, and accurate every time. The Michael Haydn Concerto In D is one of the most impressive trumpet works ever recorded. Andre does it better than anyone else ever did, if you ask me. He also takes on J.S. Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2" and the results are majestic. The essential Joseph Haydn Trumpet Concerto is on here as well, a piece in which Andre plays an especially stunning cadenza on the first movement. The Telemann, Tartini, Handel, Vivaldi and Marcello are all impeccably played. Maurice Andre was the second or third trumpet player I started listening to after Miles Davis. I also discovered Clifford Brown around then, back in 6th grade. Since then, they have all remained in my list of all-time favorite trumpet players and musicians.

The incredible playing of Maurice Andre fills up all two of these cds. From the incredible brandenberg reading to the Cimarosa. This album from start to finish is a text book on beauty, style, phrasing, and how to play the trumpet. Andre is a true master of the trumpet and even more a true master musician.

Maurice André is one of those people whom one suspects isn't quite human like the rest of us (Michala Petri is another). To anyone who has ever struggled to get as much as a parp or a toot out of a trumpet, the astounding technical facility and the pure, clear, pitch-perfect sound and wonderful tone of an André is a revelation that some people are indeed more equal than others. This collection represents André in his prime (he's now sadly semi-retired) and he does a wonderful job. Many of these works are not originally for trumpet, and only a modern piccolo valved trumpet allows them to be played. Nevertheless, they come up shining.

If you're into trumpet concertos, Maurice Andre is as smooth and technical as they come. This two-CD set contains not only Bach, but also Handel, Telemann, Haydn, Albinoni, and others. If you have Andre's concertos in your sheet music library, these CD's make for great accompaniment. The CDs are great while studying as well. Mega cerebral (when you're into that kind of thing)!

I could not agree more with the review written by Frank T. Manheim. All I would add to his comments are that the recording quality is excellent, and that there are, amongst all of the wonderful selections on this CD, two vocal selections that I found deeply moving. On the first CD, there is a powerful, yet at the same time delicate performance of Vivaldi's In Nisi Dominus, by Andreas Scholl. I had never heard this selection of Vivaldi before buying this CD and don't have other performances to compare it to, but Scholl's performance was so moving, as was the accompaniment of the musical instruments on this track, that I listened to it several times in a row. I did the same with Janet Baker's performance of Dido's Lament, by Henry Purcell, on the second CD of this 2 CD set, listening to her haunting passionate voice over and over again. As with Vivaldi's In Nisi Dominus, I had never heard this composition, nor in fact any composition by Henry Purcell before buying this CD. The emotional depth and intensity that Janet Baker brings to her performance is very deeply moving. This is, fittingly, the last track on CD 2, ending this collection on a musical and emotional level, or rather, summit, that will leave you with eyes closed, thinking of the stars. As a result of having heard Janet Baker's performance on this compilation, I bought the full recording of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. In fact, I bought several CDs of music by Henry Purcell after hearing Dido's Lament.

As Frank Manheim writes in his review, this CD can either be put on as background music, or it can be listened to intently, savoring every note. Although the title of this CD set has the work "Adagios" in it, this is no mere easy listening experience. There is plenty of musical passion on both CDs. This is a wonderful 2 CD set. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in classical, and especially, Baroque music.

While classical music is achieving a resurgence in the UK and Finland, in the U.S. the meager proportion of classical music among record store and department offerings still reflects classical's waning status. What we do find even in drugstores and supermarkets is inexpensive "mood" collections like "Romance", "Spring", "Melancholy", etc. I have no problem with this - some of the unnamed orchestras or soloists aren't bad although recording quality may disappoint.

"Baroque Adagios" is a big cut higher for both enjoyable listening, as well as background music for social occasions. The Baroque period simply overflows with memorable slow movement gems - both well-known, and rarely heard. The famous Italian tenor, Beniamino Gigli, confessed that many of his most favorite pieces came from the Italian baroque and earlier. Music of the earlier times combines emotional and melodic appeal with a restraint and depth that makes it wear well on many hearings. The only risk for background music is that the gorgeous melodies and resonant sonorities will draw people away from what they might otherwise do.

The choice of repertory is rich and varied, but this collection is particularly noteworthy for its long list of famous soloists and conductors. Besides Janos Starker, these include Heinz Holliger, Andras Schiff, Henryk Szeryng (in the Bach Double Concerto in D minor), Thurston Dart, Enrique Fernandez, Christopher Hogwood, Karl Munchinger, Neville Marriner, and many others.

I can think of few ways to better dissolve stress than to put this recording on a player and relax into a comfortable easy chair - or or put it into a car CD player on a longer trip. It makes a thoughtful present for both knowledgeable classic buffs and newcomers to classical music.

This album is from the popular series "Set Your Life To Music"
series. The theme for this one is "Baroque For Beauty Sleep" which seems to be a companion to "Baroque For Bathtime". Baroque music, especially the slower movements in many concertos, are exquisite nocturnal pieces that ease the transition from being awake to falling asleep. The beautiful, elegant, slow, graceful music of many of these pieces will definately relax you and even help you fall asleep. It's therapeutic. There are so many reasons one can buy this album. It can help you relax and soothe you, as already mentioned, and it can be played in the background of a message therapy session. It can serve as music for a romantic evening or dinner. And lastly, it hits the spot after a long day and you're ready to visit the world of dreams.

Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances, scored for lute and other Baroque period instruments, is the newest piece on the album. Respighi, a modern composer, was delving into neoclassic music and deliberately evoking the Baroque Era. It works wonderfully.
Naturally, no Baroque album is complete without Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Here is the Largo from "Winter" only it is played on panpipes by the New Age artist Zamfir. The sound is hauntingly beautiful. There is a sonata for flute and harp by Bach, the biggest name in the period and Vivaldi's "L'Estro Armonico" as well as Telemann's Suite in A for Recorder. One particular piece I enjoy and think you will too is the melodic and elegant Concerto Grosso No. 12 by Handel, the slow movement Larghetto E Piano. It is sheer tonal beauty. There is more concertos by Vivaldi, whose use of the flute is always very reflective and dreamy and even a solo aria from a motet of his, the soprano Elly Ameling sings "Nulla In Mundo Pax", a lyrical-coloratura showcase which crowns and concludes this gorgeous album.

Baroque is such a wide and wonderful musical discovery for us modern types. It is soothing and quieting to the soul, and in this case for the body as well.

Whether used as lullaby inducing or just listening pleasure and relaxation, this is nice collection. Including wide array of instruments: strings, flute, panpipes, oboe, flute, harp, guitar, recorder, piano, and voice --- this is truly enjoyable.

There is wide array of baroque composers as well --- Rephighi, Vivaldi, Bach, Albinoini, Telemann, and more.

Great price, great variety, great addition to your CD collection.

I commend the compilers for creating such a wonderful CD. The music is quite mellow, especially the pieces that are preformed by Zamfir, the famous panpipist. That whimsical woodwind gives a rustic, almost mythical feel the piece of music. You almost feel like you are in Arcadia awaiting a lecture by Chiron!

There is a good cross sampling of various Baroque pieces and Baroque artists. The variety is the spice that makes this CD worth buying and listening to over and over again. This CD also works well on shuffle, which remakes it into a brand new album.

There are a lot of oboes and string on this disc, and being a former oboist, I am electrified as I hear that instruments mellow honk!

Guys! Don't be put off by the cover-this is a good disc. Good for the mind, heart, and soul!

I don't know how to sum this one up. It is mellow, but you can't meditate to it. It's more upbeat than I would normally prefer to sleep to, but it works all the same. The music is performed so beautifully that I almost want to stay up and listen.

This CD is also good for reading to, because it is easy on the ears but won't put you to sleep.

ON THIS RECORDING LISTEN TO THE RONDO FROM BEETHOVEN'S VIOLIN CONCERTO OP 61 - IT IS SIMPLY SPINE TINGLING. ANOTHER EXAMPLE WOULD BE FRITZ KREISLER'S LIEBESLEID HOWEVER TO MY ESTIMATION THE FIRST CD RELEASE OF BEETHOVEN'S VIOLIN SONATA OP 30 NO 2 - 'ALLEGRO CON BRIO' HAS TO BE HEARD BY ANY LOVER OF THE VIOLIN AND IS IN MY OPINION ONE OF THIS GREAT ARTIST'S FINEST RECORDING - BUY THE CD JUST FOR THIS ALONE. EVERYTHING ELSE IS SUPERB SO DON'T HESITATE TO ADD THIS CD IN YOUR COLLECTION.

I am a newbie to classical music. I love this CD. I realize that it doesn't do justice to many works due to the fact that only one track is played from each work, but to people like me, this is a good starting point. From here, I now know of areas of Isaac Stern's body of work that I want to delve into. I also have a better idea of which composers I want to take a closer look at. In my opinion, for a person just starting out in classical music, this is a good "sampler" of classical violin music. It's probably not something for a serious collector due to the fact that it is a collection of previously released works. I would consider it in league with a "greatest hits" album from a rock band. It's not for serious listeners, but it's a good starting point for beginners. This is a good starting point.

Of course the playing is magnificent, absolute magic. But does this CD serve any purpose? Very few serious collections are without some Stern offerings in which he plays the COMPLETE WORK. I emphasize those words to get to a complaint I always have with programs that consist of parts of longer works that make little musical sense detached from the context for which they were intended.

The Dvorak "Humoresque," for example, stands up very nicely as a single work; while the first movement of the Beethoven Piano Trio Op. 70 makes you anticipate the wonderful second movement which never comes. And so on and so on. So one will not purchase this for the music but for the artist.

No, I do not know how to fit on one CD a truly fitting tribute to a master musician, except by including only independent short pieces. Unhappily most artists are at their best in longer ones...and there we are again. Yes, all Stern lovers should have this as a momento; others not familiar with his artistry will find this CD a good introduction. The rest of us can seek out the complete recordings.

I'm a trumpet student at the Boston Conservatory, I own two versions maurice andre recorded of the vivaldi, and overall i have to say wynton's phrasing is always better. Maurice and other classical trumpeters tend to be to stiff and not let the music flow. You can still play classical music and "swing." his sound technique are perfect as usual. Wonderful cd.

. . . so I can be sure never to be without one as I travel! Marsalis plays with beauty and emotional impact. As a layman, I am impressed with his virtuosity and inspired by his performances. It is as simple as that.

I have listened to some of the more historically accurate recordings that others mention, but I prefer Marsalis' interpretations as his style has more appeal for me.

As former performing musician (two degrees in music), and a career both as a pianist, and, in high school and college, a trumpet player, I feel I'm qualified to review this recording.

The trumpet playing is clean, crisp, and MUSICAL - despite the bellyachings of other reviewers. The incredible accomplishment of having Marsalis lay down anywhere from two to EIGHT discrete trumpet tracks and have them blended in the recording process is amazing. You cannot help me impressed by reading the liner notes about exactly how this was done. For the first take, the orchestra, conductor, and Marsalis performed the ensemble playing at St. Barnabas Church in North London. Several months later, Marsalis, Raymond Leppard, the conductor, and the recording engineer and producer went back with recording gear, headphones, and a determination to lay the rest of the tracks down synchronously. In the case of the Biber concerto for eight trumpets, this involved recording seven additional different trumpet parts precisely, requiring Marsalis to actually play ahead of where he should be so the sound lag in the large church would coordinate appropriately with the recording. It should be noted that this didn't start out to be a recording "stunt" but ended up with the idea of Marsalis playing all the parts because of lack of ability to coordinate schedules with other contemplated soloists.

The result is fabulous. In contrast to the other reviewers who panned this recording, I must comment that there IS shading, there ARE crescendos and decrescendos - there is even rubato.

The sound is clean and crisp. All in all - a musical and recording triumph. Buy it!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Somwhere in the middle.......2003-02-22

All the reviews here are either love or hate. I am in the middle. I know a bit about the recordings others mention, and know a bit about Baroque ornamentation. Some of these work well, others come across as all florid fluff (which is easy to do, as the music is hardly "great" stuff).

But I find the Telemann in B-flat Major a delightful performance. This was written to be played up and with, not just played, and he does a joyous job. As he does in the Biber (a composer I enjoy greatly, usually for somber string pieces--quite a change). The snap and crisp tone works well, making a charming performance of charming tunes.

But his Vivaldi does not sing, Haydn is a mechanical piece boringly played, and the Pachelbel, a piece that is famously dull requiring exceptional playing to come alive, does not. Tedium.

The ad hominem attacks in these reviews are irrelevant. Can he play? Yes. Does he KNOW Baroque? Well, he has one opinion, but Leppard is no slouch. His recordings of Baroque music were some of my favorite LPs. Sometimes this works, sometimes it does not, and with this CD, you get some of both.

Or at least that's what I think!

Maurice Andre's playing is great, however he only plays on the last two pieces. The other players are not as good as Maurice, but their interpretations are still intertesting.

this recording is definitely NOT maurice andre recording. I have studied maurices playing for many years and i have compared the playing in this CD with other Recordings of Maurice playing the Haydn and Hummel. Theres no way anyone who has heard both could mistake this trumpet player for Maurice. THe playing is good,and it is a good supplement to you collection of recordings of these popular trumpet concertos, but it is not a staple of any collection as Maurice Andre IS. Articulation and tone are simply not on the same level as Maurice and the tone is incompatible with maurices.

I own this CD and it clearly states that Tarr is playing the Haydn and the Hummel. This is definitely not Edward Tarr's best album. This is a horrible recording of the hummel if you ask me. My advice is to find an actual Maurice Andre Recording on the EMI label. I have one that is recorded with Berlin and Karajan. This is my favorite Hummel recording. Buy it, not this.

I own this CD and although the music repertoire is great, there is only 2 of the 6 pieces which are played by Maurice Andre. If you want to hear Andre play the famous Haydn concerto in E flat major you are out of luck.

    Here lies master collection from ten years and fifty discs of examples from baroque era performed by choirs, soloists and instrumentalists.

    Conducted by energetic Robert King and his King's Consort, this is just superb!

    It will introduce one to baroque or add to one's enjoyment. Especially enjoyed Purcell's "Hear my prayer, O Lord" and Gabrieli's "Salvator noster."
