Vivaldi - Juditha Triumphans / Murray, Kiehr, Bickley, Connolly, Rigby, The King's Consort, King

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Vivaldi is best known for his instrumental music--concertos and concerti grossi--but perhaps his most-performed work, the Gloria, is for chorus and vocal soloists. This rarely recorded oratorio, "Juditha Triumphans," combines all of Vivaldi's favorite compositional mediums--solo instrumental, orchestral, solo vocal, and choral--in a work of impressive scope brimming with wonderful melodies and irresistible rhythms. Telling the story of the Jewish heroine Judith, who single-handedly saves her people from certain destruction by Nebuchadnezzar's army, Vivaldi's oratorio offers plenty of virtuoso music for soloists, which these performers, especially soprano Maria Cristina Kiehr, handle brilliantly. The action is fast-paced, the period instruments sound wonderful. And if the idea of an oratorio by Vivaldi scares you a little, have no fear; instead, prepare to be pleasantly surprised, amazed, and hooked. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Piece.......2007-02-09

I owned this recording for more than 5 years now, and would say that it really deserves a place in classical music archive.
The work is a real gem by Vivaldi. Connolly gave a very well-presented Alba and Murray a convincing Judith.
I am glad that none of the artists in this set gave over-dramatised accounts in the coloraturas.
Even so, the only soprano role in the oratorio gave a highly dramatically charged aria after discovering the death of the King Holfernes.
Since I got this disc, I obtained several pieces of the arias and started to sing them, too.
Vivaldi's music is really sublime!

5 out of 5 stars The best available recording !.......2000-06-20

Robert King and his Consort did it again ! As in the previous releases of the Sacred Music Edition, it can be said, with no fear, that he reached the top..... The solists are flawless, the chorus is great, the orchestra is magnificent, the sound quality is perfect...and the overall performance is amazing ! The only "but" of this album, is that historycaly, there are two versions of the Vagaus aria "Matrona Inimica", both from Vivaldi's hand, and only one is presented here...A small detail, but that was not left aside by "the Old" Ristenpart in his insuperable performance of this work, unfortunaly, not available anymore.... Vivaldi's only remaining Oratorio is not perfect, too many solo Arias for just a few multiple Arias, and just 5 choruses.....But it still is a Masterwork from the "Prette Rosso". And the arrangement of his RV555 concerto initial movements, as the introduction of the work, was a great idea ! Congratulations to Mr. King !

5 out of 5 stars A recording to be treasured.......1999-10-27

This recording of Vivaldi's only surviving oratorio presents Vivaldi in his best light. Fantastic performances all-round by the King's Consort and choir. If you're a fan of Vivaldi's instrumental concerti, take note -- this vocal work has all the crisp energy of his best concerti. A recording to be treasured.

5 out of 5 stars A clean, crisp interpretation of Vivaldi's surviving oratio.......1999-09-16

Robert King and his ensemble have created a terrific recording of Vivaldi's only surviving oratorio. The instrumental playing is zestful and the singers are masters of their craft. I give this recording a high recommendation.
