This has shot to very near the top of my 2500-CD collection. The sound is excellent, most voices are superb, and the music -- let's just say this is a little-known gem waiting to be discovered. The melodies by this "Bohemian Bach" are instantly attractive and memorable. I've listened to this piece a dozen times in the last month, so it wears quite well. I'm thrilled at this point in my listening career to find something I like so much that I never knew about before! This is must-hear Baroque.

5 out of 5 stars What if Zelenka had finished?.......2000-12-02

Half of this CD is taken up by the immense Gloria from Jan Dismas Zelenka's Missa Dei Filii (Mass for the Son of God), ZWV 20. This might not be particularly astounding except that Zelenka never finished this second of his projected set of six missae ultimae (final masses).

He only completed the opening 7 1/2 minute Kyrie and the incredible 30+ minute Gloria that follows. Had Zelenka continued at this pace, the complete mass might well have been 1 1/2 hours long and given the Bach B minor mass a run for its money as the defining piece of late Baroque sacred music.

The mass opens with the chorus intoning "Kyrie eleison" in block chords supported by the propulsive thrust of the lower strings. Following an orchestral introduction, the "Christe eleison" is entrusted to the solo soprano who declaims these words with simple grace, interrupted occasionally by thorny commentary from the strings and oboes. As is typical, the Kyrie is a tripartite structure, and this movement ends with a reprise of the opening "Kyrie eleison."

The Gloria begins with an orchestral introduction that sets the forward moving sweep of the entire movement. What is especially impressive about the Gloria (and the Kyrie, for that matter) is that Zelenka is able to achieve such momentum with his typical orchestra -- modest in comparison with the forces for which Bach scored his B minor mass -- of strings, two oboes, bassoon, and continuo (organ and lute in this case).

The chorus and orchestra drive the Gloria forward from the opening "Gloria in excelsis deo" to the "Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te" with the soloists providing the occasional interlude to embellish upon the statements of the chorus. One particularly effective moment in this section occurs when Zelenka has the tenors and basses arise from the depths with "Propter magnam gloriam tuam" while the soprano and alto soloists sing "Gratias agimus tibi" above.

The extended "Qui tollis" that follows is another amazing piece of music. Like other sections of the Gloria, it begins with an orchestral introduction, an appropriately brooding one considering the words that follow. The soprano is then given a lovingly ornamented aria on "Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis" with a sighing orchestral accompaniment that leads into a bass aria on "Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram" and then a tenor and bass duet on the same words.

The chorus, propelled by the orchestra launches into the short "Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis". This section is particularly striking as the lower strings rip out a chromatic bass line that anticipates Philip Glass by more than 200 years. After declaiming the "Quoniam" section, the alto soloist finally gets to show off with a busy aria on these same words that ends with a florid little cadenza.

Like all proper Glorias, this one ends with a fugue. The chorus broadly proclaims the closing "Cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen." and then, with the full collaboration of the orchestra, launches into a propulsive fugue.

Listen carefully in this section to the oboe line. I first thought I was hearing a clarino trumpet part (though no such player is listed in the orchestra's roster) typical of those that appear in Bach's cantatas. I then remembered that many baroque composers used oboes as de facto trumpets, and a careful re-listening revealed that this busy clarino line is carried off with aplomb by wonderful woody, nasal-toned baroque oboes.

Zelenka makes this closing section unique by blending into it, before the final peroration of "in gloria Dei Patris. Amen," the orchestral theme and accompanying words "Laudamus te, benedicimus te..." that close the first section of the Gloria. The effect is brilliant, helping to link the two extremes of this long movement that ends succinctly with the chorus and orchestra coming together for the final "Amen." C major chord.

By the way, there's another piece of music on this disc, Hasse's C minor Miserere. As you might know, Hasse succeeded Heinichen as Kapellmeister at the Saxon court in Dresden, a position Zelenka (who ultimately had to settle for the title of Kirchen-compositeur -- church music composer) felt he deserved but never received. Hasse's C minor Miserere (he also wrote one in E minor) was initially written in 1730 for the girls of the Ospedale degli incurabili in Venice but later revised for use at the Dresden court church. This is a fine performance of the Miserere, especially the closing chorus "Sicut erat in principio."

This CD comes from the fine German Raum Klang label. The soloists are Heike Haliaschka (soprano), Kai Wessel (alto), Marcus Ullmann (tenor), and Frank Schiller (bass). The Dresdner Kammerchor and Barockorchester are conducted by Hans-Christoph Rademann.

Needless to say, by giving this CD five stars, I have no qualms at all about these performances. The sound of the 20+ member chorus and period instrument orchestra is clear and well balanced. Rademann's conception of both works is first class, and I found more to like in the Hasse Miserere than I have in other performances of this same work to which I've listened.

It's especially fortunate that Raum Klang placed Hasse first on this CD. The Zelenka Missa Dei Filii is a masterpiece of such sweep and power that absorbing it as the first work on this CD would guarantee that the Hasse Miserere would never get a hearing! Thankfully, this is not the case, and you can be assured that this fine CD will provide a unique, potent, and enjoyable listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars The genius of Zelenka.......2006-02-18

The late masses of Jan Dismas Zelenka are generally regarded as being the high water-mark of his ouvre, if not the high point of all baroque masses. His individual style is very apparent in all of them, and the Missa Dei Patris does not disappoint. (the other masses are Missa Dei Filii, Missa Sanctissime trinitatis, Missa Omnia Sanctorum, and Missa Votiva, all except the last available in good HIP versions)

The quality of the music goes without saying to anyone familiar with Zelenka, and for those who aren't, suffice it to say that if you like the choral music of Bach, Handel or Vivaldi, Zelenka will almost definitely appeal. The choral fugues are stunning, and there are numerous delightful arias, especially the Agnus Dei which is a devastatingly beautiful, extremely slow triple time aria that seems almost static in its lugubrious pace and has the same Affekt throughout it's 8 minute duration. Sometimes I listen to it repeatedly in succession and time seems to slow down, and I realize I have just spent half an hour immersed in it. Fantastic!!

The performance is excellent, as usual with Bernius directing the Stuttgart Chamber Choir, one of the best choirs around. The soloists also impress, with my favorite being Dan Taylor who besides having one of the best alto voices in the world, gets some of the best music in the world to sing. He's a lucky guy. Buy this disc, and also seek out the other recordings of Zelenka's late masses, you cannot be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2000-12-31

Its a shame that I picked this up in a used record store in Cambridge, MA. The person who dumped it suffered a serious loss. Although the performance is on modern instruments, it is nonetheless quite vibrant. It is performed by the same ensemble that would have performed it at its premier in 1728. The mass was written for a festive occassion, and the trumpets, oboes, and drums give it a real aura of grandeur. Zelenka's sacred music is not as nimble or intimate as his chamber or orchestral works--he aims for the grandiose, in the same way Bach did. It sounds in many ways like a mini-B minor mass, although I mean that as a complement. Zelenka was very much his own man! Bach and Telemann thought very highly of the Dresden court chapel composer. Recommended, especially for the reasonable price.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-10

Jan Dismas Zelenka's (1679-1745) entire repertoire only runs to some 150 compositions and consists of a small number of instrumental selections, and a larger group of vocal sacred selections such as masses and requiems, psalms, magnificats, hymns and antiphons for vespers and a few secular vocal works. The 'Missa Dei Fili'ZWV20 recorded on this disc is a mass in honor of God, the Father. As was usual in the first half of the 18th century,Zelenka's masses and litanies are so-called "number works " in which the 5 parts of the ordinary of the mass(Kyrie,Gloria,Credo,Sanctus/Benedictus and Agnus Dei)are subdivided into smaller, musically independent single movements. The 'Litaniae Lauretanae' ZWVl52 recorded here, is subtitled "Salus infirmorum"-the welfare of the sick. I first heard Zelenka on a recording of "the Lamentations of Jeremiah" with soloists Michael Chance,Michael George and John Mark Ainsley. What a glorious recording is that one. This matches it in every way. That is,with excellent soloists and skilled choir and orchestra. It's difficult to believe that it took this long for Zelenka's music to surface, and I hope that more recordings of it are on the way.The "Missa Dei Filii", the second of his 3 final masses is not complete; it comes to an end at the Gloria. All the music as a whole demands excellent technique and brilliant virtuosity from all the singers and instrumentalists involved. Good example:"Quoniam tu solus sanctus II " as sung by Michael Chance in the Gloria.

5 out of 5 stars Truly brilliant.......2005-12-11

Zelenka is a composer that needs to be heard. Although he was very underappreciated in his own time (and up to our own) he is a composer of the highest order, easily on par with Telemann, Handel, and even Bach. According to his obituary, J.S. Bach was an admirer of Zelenka's music, and not without reason.

Most of his church music has been neglected, and if I am not mistaken, the mass performed here was never even performed until Bernius did so in the late 20th century. That is a shame because it is a marvellous work. This is baroque church music at it's grandest and most ambitious. Every movement is notable, but the opening of the Gloria is required listening for anyone who loves music.

The litany included is not as grand, but is still excellent in every way. Zelenka was a great melodist, but with a quirky sense that often surprises with sudden harmonic shifts and rhythmic zig-zags.

These works are given a great performance here by Tafelmusik, who are always very good, and the Stuttgart Chamber Choir. It's a fairly large chorus, but very precise and accurate. The soloists are also without fault.

This really is an essential to any fan of early music, and you would be missing out on a masterpiece if you over-look this cd. I urge you most strongly to buy it and listen to it. If you like Bach and Handel's choral music, I almost guarantee you will enjoy this too. Do not pass this by!!

5 out of 5 stars Another Underrated Bohemian Baroque Genius .......2004-08-02

Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679 - 1745) ~ another splendid Bohemian baroque composer ~ was never much recognised during his lifetime professionally, serving as a court musician in Dresden for most of his career. He travelled little, and only to study or participate in music research, and played a rather obscure instrument ~ the double bass ~ in the Court Orchestra. As for his training, he may have been educated by the Jesuits in Prague. We do know that in 1717 Zelenka studied with Fux in Vienna, during which time he also taught counterpoint to Quantz; that same year he accompanied the Elector to Italy where he studied with Lotti.

Zelenka was awarded a title created especially for him by the Royal Court at Dresden, that of 'Court Composer of Church Music'; under this title he composed numerous sacred works for the Dresden Catholic Church. At that time Saxony was predominantly Lutheran and the staunchly Lutheran Bach had already been awarded with the title of 'Royal Court Composer', so Zelenka's title was little more than a political-social nod to those not of Martin Luther's persuasion.

Zelenka conducted the Court Orchestra for five seasons and assisted the Kapellmeister in his duties but never received the position after his demise. This oversight disappointed and disillusioned Zelenka, who went to his death feeling he'd not received a proper due for his achievements which indeed were many and numerous. In addition to several secular instrumental compositions (none of his keyboard works are known to survive), he penned some 30 masses, plus psalms and three oratorios with biblical subjects, totaling in all around 150 sacred works.

Certainly one might agree that Zelenka deserves his due if one were to judge solely by this particularly splendid disc of his sacred choral works. Zelenka, as Biber (another Bohemian), pushed the musical envelope ~ expect the unexpected. His music is crammed with catchy counterpoint and sparkling syncopation, it's full of creative, compelling harmony and demanding instrumentation. Zelenka was a stickler for dynamics and much fond of the crescendo. Perhaps one might dub these 'Zelenka Crescendos' as he tended to describe each progression in intensity, to the point where 'piano', 'forte' and 'piu forte' might be inscribed beneath one single instrumental note.

Both the Mass and the Litaniae are impressive works, intensely festive, glittering with runs and vocal fireworks. Surprisingly contemporary in sound, as opined one critic, 'to the uninitiated it is difficult to place Zelenka's place in time'. J.S. Bach greatly admired Zelenka, and Zelenka's contemporaries referred to him as a 'dreamily pious' man.

This rather ambiguous description suits Zelenka to perfection, as there remains a bit of a mystery surrounding the details of his life. He may have been in ill-health, as one title of his works attests : 'Hypochonria' which is scored for Zelenka's pet instrument, the oboe. It's a devillish work, almost unplayable for the average oboe and oboist, which further underscores Zelenka's intensly creative attitude toward his compositions. It is widely accepted that no picture of Zelenka is believed to exist, so thus in addition to a poor constitution it is speculated he may have suffered from some physical deformity which held him back socially, artistically, and professionally, and would certainly explain his aversion to having his portrait done.

Whatever the actuality of Zelenka's life, here is one reality that I can happily vouch for ~ this CD is a jewel, and the Canadian original-instruments ensemble 'Tafelmusik' and the soloists generally superb. The only weak link to the group, and this is purely subjective opinion, was the choice of Michael Chance as alto. I would have preferred a fuller, richer female voice as accompaniment to Argenta's pure, fluid, solid soprano as opposed to a countertenor ~ which is, incidentally, the more historically correct.

Introduce yourself to Zelenka through this disc and see where it leads you. Here is a most underrated and underappreciated composer, well worth exposure and exploration and a far wider audience.

"Holy Trinity Mass, Batman!"

"Yes, Robin, absolutely correct, this is the Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis... a beautiful late work of the relatively neglected baroque composer, Jan Dismas Zelenka, written in 1736--- just years before his death in Dresden. I'm happy to see you remember. Quite moving in its genuine religious expression and depth, isn't it?"

"Golly, Batman, its chromatic profundity and contrapuntal techniques are even more astounding on second hearing, and not at all academically pedagogical, perfunctorily liturgical or redundantly repetitive!"

"On target, Robin! Notice, as well, how forward-looking the melodic development is. Sounds rather Mozartian in many instances, doesn't it? For example, the opening Kyrie I and the Sanctus, especially. And listen to the glorious lilting Benedictus. Could be taken easily for Handel."

"Wow, Batman, the parallels and similarities are staggering! Zelenka must have given old Bach a run for his money, too, huh?"

"Quite possibly, Robin. The concentrated musical and compositional efforts certainly seem to equal Bach, I should say. There is a wealth of spirit here that is undeniable."

"Jeepers, Batman, and Zelenka has even adapted the typical five elements of the baroque mass--- you know, the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei that we've discussed--- and divided them into nineteen gorgeous, moving set pieces! This seems very inventive to me."

"Yes, Robin, Zelenka was ahead of his time, and he has left us a work rich in ornamentation, style, lyricism, complexity and grace, yet accessible to all who love music, and soothing and easy on the ear. Zelenka was no drudge, Robin. This is certain; he was an innovator. It's important to keep this in mind."

"I sure will, Batman. And this CD performed by the Marburg Baroque Ensemble, under Wolfram Wehnert, is superb and beautifully recorded, too! Have you just purchased this, sir?"

"No, Robin. I renewed it from the Gotham City Library; however, I'm sure we'll be buying it soon. But, wait, now I see the Bat signal lighting up the clouds. Let's be quick to the Batmobile! Justice awaits!"

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-10

This was my first exposure to the music of Jan Dismas Zelenka and my first reaction was "Where has he been? Why haven't I heard this music before? It sounds somewhat like Bach, but it is different enough from Bach in structure and instrumentation that you would not mistake it for Bach. However, like Bach he values counterpoint, fugal technique and careful craftsmanship, besides it's sonorous color which is shown by the use of a variety of obligato wind instruments and in complex chromatic harmony. Having said all of this I need to mention the skill is takes to perform these Lamentations. For that we have 3 excellent soloists: Michael Chance-countertenor; Michael George - bass and John Mark Ainsley-tenor. They each have lengthy solo portions and perform them in a proper emotional framework. I love listening to this disc and have done so many many times. If you haven't heard Zelenka's music this is a good album to start with.

5 out of 5 stars Saving the Best for Last.......2001-07-12

This one of the last six "missae ultimae" of JD Zelenka. According to what I've read, these masses were never performed during his lifetime - they were written for Zelenka's own satisfaction but alas the cycle of six ended at only three when death claimed him. Much like Bach's mass in b minor, which was also never performed in its entireity during his life time except in his own heart, this mass was written, and perhaps shared with trusted intimates but had to wait for a more enlightened time to see the light of day.

Highly "operatic" here and intimate there, full of pathos and then exuberance, sounding so much like good Opera that it is hard to remember that this is also a Catholic Mass. However if you find the idea of a "Mass" somewhat unpleasant don't let it put you off for it is also first class entertainment. This work shares with all of Zelenka's works a wonderful "surprise" in harmony, in suspense and in consistency of same throughout. Zelenka truly in many ways saved the best for last.

This album was well done by Ludwig Guttler, the Virtuosi Saxonae, the Thuringiser Akademischer Singkreis and four wonderful vocal soloists. Anything I've heard from "Berlin Classics" has that touch of restraint and exhuberance balanced against one another. Here too on this CD you will discover a balance between the two but there is no compromise with quality.
