From the Label

Sacred marks John McDermott's first recording with the Irish Tenors since rejoining fellow original member Anthony Kearns and Finbar Wright (who actually replaced McDermott in 2000). The Irish Tenors live up to their reputation as "gifted interpreters" with this collection, covering a wide range of spiritual material. Sacred was produced by the Irish Tenors' long-time musical director, Arnie Roth, who has also worked with Charlotte Church, Diana Ross, and Art Garfunkel. The album was produced in Prague at the Rudlofinum and ICN Studios.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond words ..........2007-03-22

Having only recently discovered The Irish Tenors, nothing here was a repeat to me. And, even if it was, I can't imagine being disappointed.

If you are open to the idea that music can be a vehicle for a moment of sublime and sacred ecstacy, that may help convey what I find difficult to put into words.

While I live continuously and constantly in Our Father's presence, a music album such as this can certainly heighten the moment with Him.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent voices, songs and arrangements.......2006-06-17

This is an extraordinary collection. The songs are irresistible, the voices incredibly powerful and filled with appropriate emotion, and the orchestra is very simply great. You'll want to buy this album for others. Simply beautiful. A pure joy.

3 out of 5 stars Not their best album.......2006-02-27

For the most part this is an enjoyable collections of sacred music. However the inclussion of "Lord of the Dance" and other modern tunes are dreary no matter who sings them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent !!.......2005-10-26

I recently went to a concert to hear The Irish Tenors. They did several songs from this CD and it was great. If you like John McDermott as much I do then you must have this CD. This is a triple good CD with 3 top tenors.

3 out of 5 stars sacred.......2005-10-23

I enjoyed most of the music. My main complaint is the repeated songs from John McDermott's Faithfullness CD. For us fans of John the repeats seem a bit too much. I think there are six reteats.

5 out of 5 stars Kander and Ebbs' Score Stands Alone.......2007-01-21

The biggest criticism of this Broadway musical was the book. It allegedly meandered, bored the audience and included unfocussed or unnecessary sequences such as the "dream sequence". Well, I never saw the show and can only evaluate this score on its own merits. Based on that alone, it's a complete winner. Memorable songs, great performances, and the score itself tell a clear story that might have been muddled by an overly fussy book (again, that's from heresay...I never saw the show, which flopped in its initial presentation -- unfortunately, because there is much to admire and enjoy in this typically complex Kander and Ebb score).

First of all, top-rate performances abound here. Karen Ziemba makes every one of her songs sail into the stratosphere. She is a true wonder and deserved her Tony nomination against incredible competition (Bebe Neuwirth got it for the much more popular "Chicago", but Ziemba's her equal). Debra Monk once again makes her mark as a Broadway character actress, although her song "Everybody's Girl" is easily the worst song in the show and certainly beneath Kander and Ebbs' standard, but she wins you over with her energetic and well-placed rendition. Daniel MacDonald does a suberb job as the ill-fated hero, exposing innocence and wry commentary in his very presence, but he is equalled by Gregory Harrison's slimy and ultimately ferocious performance as Mick, the emcee.

The score evokes the time (the 1930s) without relying on pastiche to put it over. Of note, Ziemba's intro, "Willing to Ride", the ensemble "Everybody Dance" (which gives Harrison his chance to shine), "Two Little Words" (which provides the auspicious debut of a most impressive Kristen Chenowith and augers the great things yet to come for her), the touching "First you Dream" and, finally, the both ferocious and mournful reprises of the title song display a powerful and underrated score that deserves reevaluation.

If the book got it wrong, the composers and actors got it quite right the first time. This Original Cast Recording will always be proof positive of that undeniable fact. Always "dream".

3 out of 5 stars Great Score, lousy show........2006-07-22

I think it's one of Kander and Ebbs best, better than Chicago and close to Cabaret. Sadly, the book ruined the show, it bored people. Yet, listening to the ravishing music on the CD, it's hard to realize that it all didn't come together. Maybe someday, someone will revise the book and make it work. Till then, enjoy the CD, it's absolutly gorgeous, had great character numbers, spirited dance numbers and dazzling ballads. The performances are wonderful, with Gregory Harrison (who knew Trapper John could sing?) , Daniel MacDonald and Karen Ziemba shining through on every song. The opening and closing theme is haunting.

5 out of 5 stars Kander and Ebb in a Major Key.......2006-02-09

I first heard excerpts from this on Accuradio.com, and thought it sounded great. It is. In the Kander and Ebb canon, Steel Pier may not rank with Chicago, but I enjoy listening to it as much as to Cabaret. It's sweeter and less dark than either of those, but set in the same period (1933) and just as evocative of that period.

First, the performances of the leads are excellent. Karen Ziemba is superb. Daniel McDonald has a wonderful light baritone, and who knew Gregory Harrison (Trapper John, M.D.) could sing, let alone sing well. Debra Monk performs an excellent comic turn. Kristen Chenoweth's Broadway debut number was corny as can be, but did show off her talent and range well.

The music is just wonderful. Willing to Ride is a spirited waltz. Everybody Dance is a near-perfect Charleston opener top the dance marathon that forms the backbone of the plot. Power is a Powerful Thing may be a little weak in the lyrics, but its set to a spirited and charming ragtime melody. Dance with Me and The Last Girl are sung in a medley format. This is almost a shame because both numbers are excellent in their own right. In fact, The Last Girl is as gorgeous a ballad as you can find anywhere.

Wet is a tinkling, sparkling number in which Ms. Ziemba charms, and Mr. McDonald has a teriffic counterpoint melody. Ms. Monk has a showstopper in Everybody's Girl and a torchy number with Somebody Older. The Shag is a dance piece that may be the best number of all. It seems to alternate between twenties hot jazz and the swing that was just starting to be heard around then. There's also a great bluesy harmonica specialty number, whose only flaw is that it's too short. All in all, the score is a gem, especially compared to most of what we've heard in the last twenty years or so.

This is one of those recordings that makes you wonder why the show was a flop. I went back and read the reviews. Basically they didn't like the plot and felt the production strained too hard to be likeable, but lacked energy at the same time. The show also suffered from comparison to the stunning revival of Chicago that opened in the same season. The critics even managed to be lukewarm on the score. The show closed shortly after being nominated for eleven Tony's and winning none - that was the year Titanic swept the boards. With all that, I'd still say the score is marvelous when heard on its own merits. And I'd go to see a revival if someone would do it. Buy it. I recommend it without reservation.

4 out of 5 stars Weak Plot ... Nice Score.......2005-08-06

The overall plot for Kander & Ebb's 1997 "Steel Pier" is fairly weak, but the score is actually quite good and sung by a terrific cast (Karen Ziemba, Daniel McDonald, Debra Monk, Gregory Harrison, and Kristin Chenowith). Not in the same league as their brilliant "Chicago", "Cabaret" or "Kiss Of The Spider Woman", but a worthy effort with several nice tunes.

Best tracks:

Willing To Ride
Second Chance
Running In Place
First You Dream

Unfortunately, "Steel Pier" was overshadowed by that season's remarkable revival of "Chicago" and dreadful "Titanic". A fine addition, however, to a theatre-lover's collection!

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2005-04-28

I love this album! I bought it a few weeks ago and from the moment I listened to "Two Little Words" I knew this was going to be one of my favorites! The music absolutely gorgeous! I reccomend it!

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2005-11-18

I know that WOW is kind of a small word but this CD ROCKS! I have loved queen for years. I originally bought this CD for my 10 year old son who took up the violin this year and who loves queen as much as I do but it quickly became mine. I've heard some pretty bad imitations, remakes, and ripoffs. I can honestly say that this CD is none of the above. You get 10 of Queens best. 1) Killer Queen, 2) Bohemian Rhapsody, 3) We Are The Champions, 4) We WIll Rock You, which happens to be my favorite on this disk, 5)Fat Bottomed Girls, 6)Crazy Little Thing Called Love, 7) Somebody To Love, 8) Play The Game, 9) You're My Bext Friend, 10) Another One Bites The Dust. The only downside to this disk is that they left out about a hundred other songs. I sincerely hope that The String Quartet comes out with a volume 2, but why stop there. They could go on forever with just Queen Classics.
Do yourself a favor. If you like Queen and Classical Music BUY THIS CD. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars YES!!!!.......2005-06-05

Two words: Bohemian Rahpsody.

THey could have released a CD with only this song and I would have bought/borrowed/stolen it to get it. This song is definitely a highlight, but don't stop there, since the rest of the CD will make you want to play it over and over again.

If you've been thinking about buying a String Quartet Tribute, but don't know which to buy, I would buy this one, without a doubt.

5 out of 5 stars Brava Dame Kiri!.......2007-03-11

This is a delightful CD. Esteemed soprano Kiri Te Kanawa sings Gershwin. One hook making this CD interesting is the use of the original scores and choral arrangements. It adds a most pleasant element to this recording. In essence, this is simply a lot of fun to listen to. Kiri Te Kanawa takes the music for what it is, sings it with gusto, and produces a very satisfying CD.

Some examples. . . . "Somebody loves me" demonstrates her lush voice. This is a nice version of a fine Gershwin tune. The orchestral backing is solid and enjoyable. All in all, very satisfying. "Summertime," from "Porgy and Bess," is well known. This is well sung; her operatic voice handles the song most satisfactorily. A very fine version. . . .

"Nice work if you can get it" is a clever bob-bon. Dame Kiri sings this in a most sprightly fashion. She sings in the proper spirit for the song and seems to be enjoying herself in the process! There is a nice high note at the end which does not seem simply for effect (compare with Mario Lanza's efforts at ending almost any song with a high C).

"Embraceable you" is charming and well done. "I got rhythm" closes this CD. Again, very nicely done with lush orchestration and choral singing. The song is taken at a quick pace and the result is delightful. Her rich voice works well on this cut. The chorus is energetic and the orchestra sparkles.

This is a most enjoyable album. Great music sung in a charming style by a great singer

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2002-05-14

If you like Gershin and Kiri Te Kanawa you'll probably enjoy this album as much as I do!

I can imagine Nick and Nora Charles listening to this at one of Nick's favorite dives! It will transport you to a sophisticated time and place that may have never existed except in literature and debutante coming out parties.

Gatsby would have loved it, and surely would have invited Kiri to all his parties!

4 out of 5 stars Classic Gershwin.......2002-04-05

Original arrangements of Gershwin tunes are rare these days, but that's what you'll hear in this album by Kiri Te Kanawa. Granted, the arrangements sound somewhat dated according to 21st century tastes, but that's what makes them fascinating. These were like nothing anyone else was writing when the George and Ira first brought them to life. Kiri uses a different, somewhat breathier voice than you might be used to on her classical albums, probably not the type of voice Gershwin had in mind, but I think it generally works pretty well.

Released in 1981, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is a collaboration between ambient pioneer Brian Eno and Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. On Ghosts, the two strong-willed musicians manage to come to a meeting of the minds, blending Byrne's herky-jerky funk with Eno's atmospheric sound sculpting. More than anything, this is a large album, intent on pushing itself to the front of the listener's consciousness. Abundant percussion (everything from booming tribal drums to eerie electronics) reverberates in the background while Byrne and Eno toss all manner of found sounds, field recordings, and radio broadcasts into the mix. What results is a groundbreaking album that introduced a generation to the dazzling possibilities offered by electronic recording techniques. Highlights include "The Jezebel Spirit," an electro-funk workout that uses a recording of an exorcism as its focal point, and "Very, Very Hungry," a mysteriously ethereal display of electronic percussion and large-scale sonic architecture. --S. 5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking!.......2006-03-30

Wgen I first heard this record I was completely blown away. IT was a completely new and unique fusion of ethnic music and modern technology. tracks such as Jezebel Spirit and Help Me Somebody remain incredible even to this day. Even if the sound has aged slightly (it is somewhat trebly by today's standards and the bass and guitar somewhat too newwavy...but i guess it was the time so...) I still consider this one of the ...100 best records i have.

5 out of 5 stars Qu'ran is back, baby........2005-04-18

Perhaps I have a strange version of the cd, but I think the new versions of the cd now have "Qu'ran" as track 6 and "Very, Very Hungry" at track 12.

I'm glad they put Qu'ran back in the mix because it's one of my favorite songs. I also particularly like "Mea Culpa" "Regiment" "Help Me Somebody" "Come With Us" and "Very, Very Hungry"

It's very funky and odd. Not quite like anything else. I do get strange looks from people, though, when they hear preaching coming out of my cd player.

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking brilliance..........2005-03-31

Few records can justifiably claim to be "groundbreaking", but here's one - a mesmerising example of two highly creative musicians at the peak of their powers pushing their ideas out to the edge. Using the infectious poly-rhythms and jerky, high tension riffs & vocals that permeated their brilliantly successful collaboration on Talking Heads' "Remain in Light" as their starting point, they mix-in ingenious looped samples and insidious guitar, synthesizer & percussion back-beats to produce something completely unique. Not only like nothing else around at the time but, like all truly great albums, one that hasn't aged with time. Often sounding more like an inventive slice of modern "electronica/dance" it's almost impossible to believe that it was produced over twenty years ago... and, of course, a great deal of what's followed since can be traced back to this amazing record.

Darker and far more "left-field" than "Remain in Light", "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" is no easy listen, but with repeat playing it becomes equally addictive... a worthy successor and a wholly successful exploration of just how far Brian Eno's & David Byrne's complex fusions of electronica & rock could be taken. File under "essential, timeless and under-rated slice of musical genius".

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant .......2004-11-18

I have had a few copies of the vinyl, and back in the day created a cassette with the deleted track Qu'Ran. Then a friend gave me a program that enabled me to rip Qu'Ran from tape to the PC and enabled me to burn a cd with the proper track listing adding Very Very Hungry as the bonus track it should have always been.We are also in the process of finding the Katherine Kuhlman tracks which were deleted due to pressure from her estate.Whee!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Album.......2005-11-28

Regardless of whether or not you like the Killers, this CD is pretty good. I love classical music, and this CD is not a disappointment.

The songs are a little shorter than the originals, but still manage to be pretty good. It's amazing what they've done with just a few classic instruments and no synthesizer. The mood of the songs are a little different from the album, it's not so much "night" music, as it is... classic. You can picture yourself eating in a brightly lit, fancy French cafe with this music in the background, rather than being at a club or on the streets at night.

The only problem is that the music lacks a certain amount of energy, which was present on the original album.

I would still reccomend this CD to anyone who likes classical music and the Killers.

If you like The Killers this Cd rocks! I love the Hot Fuss Cd and this one is just as good. I highly recommend this Cd for all Killer fans!

3 out of 5 stars The Killers have a tribute album...already?.......2005-04-26

Okay, "Hot Fuss" came out about 10 months ago and now The Killers are one of the most popular bands of the 'indie' genre. Is it too soon for The String Quartet to turn songs like "Mr. Brightside" and "Somebody Told Me" into Muzak pieces? The answer is yes but...they did a pretty good job of it. I am not recommending this cd unless you love The Killers AND you don't mind listening to the songs turned around 180 degrees into 'chamber music'. Try to preview it first.

4 out of 5 stars On the borderline.......2005-11-28

I've owned this CD for many years. Part III of the involuntary songs is a layered collection of laughter, which Johnson plays with and accompanies with various instruments. It always brings a laugh from me - I can't help it.
All the pieces are on the border between found sounds and improvised spontaneity, between pop and advant-garde, and between story telling and avoidance of story telling. It reminds me more of Steve Reich's pieces (where he brings forward the natural melodies and rhythms of speech) than of any other composer.

3 out of 5 stars Certainly a product of its time.......2005-02-15

Having become aware of this dsic through a review of Meredith Monk by Daniel Patrick Stearns in The Philadelphia Inquirer, I sought out the disc, bought it and set in the CD player. I like it, but it is definitely a throwback to its time (circa 1979, early 80's). The influences on Johnson's playing and compositional style are certainly a mix of Mike Oldfield, Steve Howe, Steve Hackett and Dave Van Tieghem. I'm not sure who influenced whom, but it is not a big leap to the guitar work of Adrian Belew from Johnson. It's all very avant-garde and borderline prog, and while you're likely to be more impressed with the technique needed to make this than with the music, still, for a piece 25 years old, it holds up. In fact U79, the last piece on the disc, would not be out of place on a King Crimson record.
There are no melodies as such. The CD is like an art installation and the sound of the guitars is not as prominent as you might expect. In fact, the amplifiers sound cheap. But there are moments when he gets beyond the technical noodling and lands on some stunning stringwork. The title piece is a cleverly assembled soundscape of a woman's voice looping over her attempt to remind the listener of some guy named John. In the course of the loops, there evolves a polyphonous sound sheet that Johnson syncopates and plays along to, much as you would expect from a Laurie Anderson disc.
Whether I'll go back to it much, I can't say, but it was interesting first time through.

    5 out of 5 stars lovely.......2006-03-18

As a fan of Elliott Smith and of classical string instruments, this is truely the best of both worlds. I completely disagree that this is butchery of a talented man's music. And I doubt very much that he would object to this cd. It gives it a whole new feel and really brings it to a new level of beauty. In my opinion, lovely is the greatest compliment that I can give.

    1 out of 5 stars No Thanks.......2005-08-23

    1 out of 5 stars Horrors!.......2005-08-08

Once again the string quartet butchers a brilliant artist with it's simplified arrangements and awful musicianship. If you want to hear versions Elliott's works do him justice check out Brad mehldau (bottle up and explode), Bill frisell (satellite), ir chris O'reilly's soon to be released tribute album.

    5 out of 5 stars whatever.......2004-12-18

i just came across these string tributes and bought this one alonge with a david bowie and a radiohead one, and i think they're amazing. where the money goes to is completely irrelevant. kinda like saying spending money on anything that isnt elliott smith is selfish. the whole cd is great if your really into elliott smith. the way they put together waltz 2 sounds so great.

1 out of 5 stars Shameless profiteering posturing as a "tribute".......2004-12-08

What a bunch of tasteless bottom feeders! What an injustice postured as a tribute to a truly talented artist no longer alive to defend himself! PLEASE do not give these people your Money!
