Carl Nielsen has become a standard bearer for Danish art and culture throughout the world. His music is intensely personal, extremely well crafted, and boldly colorful. Nielsen’s shorter works for orchestra have not attained the notoriety of his symphonies, but are nonetheless rewarding pieces. They perhaps show a more subjective side of the composer, highlighting his ability to create individual tone-pictures of great beauty and atmosphere.

This 11th disc of the Grainger Edition is a marvel! It is some of his least known works and it shows Grainger's quality throughout his work. From his childhood, Grainger loved Nordic Sagas and later in life he spend much time in Scandinavia folk-song collecting and became good friends with Edvard Grieg.

Here there are melancholic songs, Romantic songs, and songs of freedom and joy. To a Nordic Princess is a masterpiece and in my mind, has the emotional power of Beethoven's 9th at its climax. The Merry Wedding is also a marital overflow of love and joy. The Danish Folk Song suite has every emotion in it you can imagine and is another masterpiece. I wish more orchestras would perform this as it stands up to (and mostly exceeds) any "popular" classical piece in artistic integrity, imagination, and listener enjoyment. Please buy this disc! you will be enthralled.

A Match Made in Heaven.......2001-11-21

The guitar and recorder are a lovely sonic match, blending into a lyrical intimacy. Michala Petri has been the international champion of the recorder since her teen years, combining unequalled technical mastery with musical expression seemingly beyond the ability of this relatively primitive and limited instrument. Now in her forties and as ever breaking new ground for the recorder, she has combined with her husband, the excellent guitarist Lars Hannibal, to record an album of transcriptions for recorder and guitar.

While it is not at all unusual to hear recorder and guitar together, it is unusual to hear them playing music written less than two centuries ago. Most of the pieces transcribed here date from the romantic and post-romantic. Most are familiar short works by such as Grieg, Satie, Faure, and Nielsen. There is a bent toward the haunting, such as the lost-in-time 'Sicilienne' from Faure's 'Pelleas et Melisande', and some of Grieg's piano miniatures evoking (or invoking) his special Nordic forest magic. In every case, the two master performers blend seamlessly, and range from amazing feats to the most intense expressiveness.

This album excels our time-in-CD-player test, and is the album most likely to be listened to by my wife and I as we fall asleep. Sometimes, though, I stay awake because I can't stop listening.

American Conductor Lance Friedel is currently enjoying an active career in Europe and the USA . He has served as Music Director of the Providence Chamber Orchestra in Rhode Island and as a frequent guest conductor of numerous orchestras throughout the world. Mr. Friedel was awarded first prize at the 2001 Mario Gusella International Conductors Competition in Pescara , Italy . As a result of this prestigious prize, he has been engaged to conduct concerts with orchestras throughout Italy , as well as in Hungary . In 1994 Mr. Friedel was the first-prize winner at the Czech Music Workshop, and was invited to conduct the Hradec Králové Philharmonic Orchestra the following season. In 1995 and 1996, Mr. Friedel was awarded first prize at the Marienbad Conducting Workshop, and was invited to conduct concerts with the West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Friedel has attended master classes under such esteemed maestros as Leonard Slatkin, Andre Previn, and Lorin Maazel, and has attended numerous workshops and seminars, including the Mozarteum Summer Academy in Salzburg , the Aspen Music Festival, and Tanglewood. His conducting teachers have included Gustav Meier, Michael Charry, and Georg Tintner. A graduate of Boston University , Mr. Friedel has also studied at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore , the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna , and the Mannes College of Music in New York .

Best Nielsen Collection.......2005-10-09

I really enjoyed this CD. Nielsen's music is immediately captivating, full of atmosphere, color and humor. I had not heard of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, but they play beautifully throughout this disc, and produce just the right sound for this music. And conductor Lance Friedel's interpretations are totally convincing.

The Maskarade Overture won me over right away. It's fun and exciting, with a race-to-the-finish ending. "At the Bier of a Young Artist" makes a good contrast - a lyrical and touching piece for string orchestra, played here with great intensity.

The Helios Overture is my favorite. Of the two other recordings I've heard, one (Willen) plays the piece in about 10 minutes, and is rather dry. The other (Rozhdestvensky) is ponderous and slow at nearly 15 minutes. Friedel, at about 12 minutes, gets it just right. There is wonderful atmosphere in the beginning, and plenty of life and drama later on. The end is gorgeous. This alone is worth the price of the CD.

Similarly, Rozhdestvensky's performance of the Bohemian-Danish Folk Melody is just way too slow. Friedel's is warm and songful, with a rapturous ending.

The Aladdin Suite is a true masterpiece (why isn't this music better known?). Friedel and the orchestra beautifully capture the shifting moods and colors of these oriental dances. The last movement in this recording will lift you out of your seat - it really rocks!

This disc is a perfect introduction to Nielsen's music. From here one can move on to the symphonies (with Blomstedt or Chung) and the wonderful Woodwind Quintet. A superb CD!
