Rachmaninov: Concerto for piano in Cm; Concerto for piano in Dm

Since Rachmaninov's Piano Concertos need so much personality from their performers, the obscure pianists who wind up on bargain labels usually can't do the job convincingly. Bernd Glemser may not be Artur Rubinstein or Alexis Weissenberg yet, but he's got both the personality and the piano power to do justice to these much-loved showpieces. Although he doesn't stop to smell too many roses along the way, Glemser does have the flexibility and sense of phrasing to keep these big Concertos firmly in the Romantic era, and he makes some tremendous climaxes. Wit and the fine Polish orchestra are with the soloist all the way, and even the recorded sound is outstanding. -- Leslie Gerber

A truly great recording of 3rd concerto........2006-03-25
If you are looking for a recording which shows an grand and perfectly controlled playing of the original cadenza, Take this recording! Glemser recorded this work at his early thirties(his second recording as far as I know)and the result is really excellent.
His performance shows deeply romantic approach and insight for the stucture of the work.(Its 3 movements are themetically related.)
Especially, I've never heard the better playing for the 2nd movement than this. His playng for the movement is like the waves in Winter sea and the melody line is perfectly never harmed which is often shown unacurately in other recordings.
His 3rd movement somewhat lacks the madeness of Argherich but has surpringly accurate control and romanticism deeply felt, which can't be found at her recording.
The orchestra conducted by maestro Wit does really good job here
like the first-rate orchestra like the London Phill.
And the sound quality is clean and warm. very good.
At any rate, this Glemser's version is so-called 'a hidden great recording'. It is truly illuminate playing!!
I recommend this strongly to you.
Thank you for reading my review written in English poorly.
An brilliant and technically perfect performance.......1998-12-26
The perfomance not only showed his ability as a great soloist, but its also demonstrated his ability to handle a large scale ochestral work where the ability of co-ordinating with ochestra is essential. personally, he can play just as good as Horowitz and ashkenazy can!
It is an understatement to say that this CD is fantastic.......1998-11-11
Though both concertos are brilliant, number 3 can be argued to be better. Number 2 is "easier" to play (through personal experience) emotianally although both of the concertos are technically demanding. The Third is very profound. It characterizes Rachmaninoff's later works for the piano.

One of the best Rach 3rds ever!.......2003-11-02
While I haven't heard the Rachmaninoff 2nd on this album (I downloaded it from AOL's MusicNet service and only heard the 3rd concerto), the performance by Boris Berezovsky is astonishing. The sonics are wonderful, the orchestra is right on and the balance is excellent. All the way from the opening movement (the artist plays the harder full cadenza) to the ending tutti where the piano plays the A major to D major cadence and the orchestra responds with the tympani and horns, the interplay between orchestra and piano are excellent! This is one of the best 3rds I've ever heard, bar none...and I've heard a LOT. I have virtually every Rachmaninoff third ever done (I have over 40 versions in my LP and CD library). Berezovsky never lets the piano go into the distant background like a lot of modern recordings that are trying to be more "symphonic" do. (I think of Ashkenazy's versions except with Fistoulari and Thibaudet come to mind). The 3rd is a pyrotechnic extravaganza MEANT to show off the pianist's technique and expressive bravura. Rachmaninoff wrote it for his American debut for god's sakes. And the tempi in this performance are right on too. Not to languid and slow like some other more recent recordings (Kissin's first movement comes to mind). If you want to hear a Rach 3rd in great sound the way it was meant to be, get this recording. (Sorry I have nothing to say on the 2nd concerto as I haven't heard it yet; and, besides there are a plethora of great recordings of it).
