The Horszowski Collection
Editorial Reviews

This set, published to celebrate the pianist's 100th birthday, was the first in an ongoing series of live performance tapes now appearing on the Arbiter label. Mieczyslaw Horszowski was a wonderful pianist at his best, and most of his late recordings and concerts were magical. But this set has some serious problems. The Schubert Sonata in C Minor, for all the insight of its playing, is marred by numerous distracting technical flaws. And in the late Beethoven works that fill most of one disc, Horszowski's struggles with the difficulty of the music prevent us from learning much about his insight. The pianist's fans may want the set anyway for some beautifully played shorter works, but the discs in the Arbiter series show him to much better advantage. --Leslie Gerber

Bach as Music.......2004-07-26
For years I have grappled with Bach's WTC, the acknowledged Old Testament dispensation of the classical keyboard. But performances by Gould and Richter, while brilliant, never disclosed to me the profound unity and musicality of these pieces as a set. I found Horszowski several years ago playing Mozart piano quartets with the Budapest Quartet and later on a gorgeous rendition of Bach's second keyboard partita. He brings sublime insight, taste and delicacy to his playing. Whereas Gould is a genius in his own right, he never showed me how these pieces function as a beautiful piece of music, as Horszowski does. They sounded more like a set of exercises. Richter, my favorite pianist, plays each prelude and fugue with rare depth and passion: each is its own ballade, etude, tone poem or cantata under his fingers. Again, however, I never saw how well the 24 function as a whole. Horszowski makes this a piece of exquisite, evocative music. I could not stop playing it. I give it five stars because this artist gives a new perspective to a familiar classic, accomplishing what Aristotle asked of art: that it delight and instruct. Horszowski does this, gracefully, without ostentation.

Don't ever doubt for a second. This is for you!.......2004-07-26
These works at last were released for Music & Arts , so all of us who never had the glorious opportunity of being there , at least we can celebrate having an issue of these unvaluable recordings .
You must acquire the first volume too .
To talk about the level of these recordings means to be in presence of outstandings performings . As you know , Casals was to me (Furtwangler , Martha Landowska , Joseph Szigetti , Wilhelm Kempff , Albert Schweitzer and Frau Carreño ,too) the highest artist of the XX century
And Pau Casals had the quality of elevate the standard level interpretation with every partner he played . Watch for instance the growth up of Rudolf Serkin , Sandor Vegh , Isaac Stern or Eugene Istomin . Casals seemed to be gifted of an inner fire who literally loaded all the surroundings . Such level of interpretations is product of a deep commitment with himself and with his goal in this world .
Every piece in every CD is a jewel . To describe all and every one of its inner virtues would be unending .
Compare by yourself .
Great sound, even greater performances!!.......1999-04-04
The first thing that struck me about this recording is how amazingly good the sound is! Although entirly monaural, each of these live performances has a presence and excitement that is often lacking in recent recordings. For me, the highlight of this set is the performance of the Oboe Quartet by Mozart, featuring the legendary oboist MARCEL TABUTEAU. His tone, phrasing and musicality is simply astounding.

Customer Reviews:
True, true..........2004-10-07
Good music is the outward expression of a man's communion with the soul. The best music is the outward expression of a soul's communion with God.
Here we have a beautiful soul performing the works of the most beautiful souls. The result is something astonishing and very rare in the world of recorded piano music.
I think that the only way to describe it is to affirm that, at his very best, Horszowski seems to take on the very shape and presence of the composer, performing these pieces as if he were the originator, in the act of improvisation.
The last movement of op.110 is an inspired miracle which should be heard. I think that the sound is more than acceptable.
Excellent performances, but fair to dreadful sound quality........2001-08-07
First of all, I completely agree with the other reviewer concerning the sound quality of this set -- it goes from okay to absolutely dreadful. However, I disagree about making allowances for him being very old. Like most great pianists, Horszowski improved with age. He was in his early 90's for the most recent recordings in this collection, bringing over 80 years of experience of giving public performances. Playing the piano was as natural to him as breathing is to most of us, and it shows in his playing. However, we are talking about live performances, and therefore allowances should be made, as one cannot expect that such performances would always be technically perfect. This is especially true in Horszowski's case, as he made far too few recordings to satisfy his fans, so anything that anyone happened to record is apt to be released on CD, which means that his recordings do not necessarily represent his best performances. Still, the "moments of exquisite beauty" mentioned by the previous reviewer are numerous and not to be missed. Some performers play like a machine -- soulless; Horszowski is the exact opposite of this. Horszowski has that elusive and difficult to explain quality of being (for want of a better word) 'musical'. He is the most 'musical' performer I have ever heard, which is why, in my opinion, he can do no wrong, even when he makes a few mistakes.
This is a set for someone who already knows they like Horszowski and can tolerate a poor recording (so I agree with the previous reviewer in his/her overall assessment). If you are a fan, buy it. If you have never heard Horszowski, buy one of his four digitally recorded CDs from Elektra/Nonesuch (sold here at Amazon):
ASIN: B000005IYG
ASIN: B000005IZG
ASIN: B000005J02
ASIN: B000005J0V (his last, and my favorite; he was 98 when this was recorded)
If you are on a tight budget, try:
Schubert: Trout Quintet, Death and the Maiden / Budapest Qt et al ASIN: B000002773
Back to the CDs here:
5 stars for performances (no one plays like Horszowski); 1 to 3 stars for recording quality, depending on the particular piece.
A mixed bag.......1999-10-23
Basically a CD for enthusiasts--sound quality ranges from fair to dire, and you have to take into account that for some of these the pianist was into his nineties. The sound is best for the Diabellis, the 3 Chopin pieces, and the short J. S. Bach excerpt which are also I think the best performances in the set. The Diabellis are sometimes rather rough-going but have moments of exquisite beauty; the latter description also applies to the short Bach excerpt.
To my mind almost worth the price of the set in themselves are the three Chopin pieces all in arresting, completely "un-frilly" performances.
Caveat emptor with regard to sound quality, but there's worthwhile stuff on these discs.

Customer Reviews:
truly one of the best.......2005-11-03
Of the many recordings of the WTC, this is one of the best, though it seems to be neglected. It has the right tempo for each of the pieces, in comparison to some recordings, which seem more often to have unexpectedly slow or fast renditions for certain pieces. Their is also a subtle and sensitive feeling given to each one. In some ways, this interpretations seems somewhere in between Schiff and Hewitt, though that is of course simplistic. It is more "old school" or classic in its approach than Gould, whose interpretation is of course excellent but a bit idiosyncratic. If you want a rendition that you can listen to again and again with joy, without quirky aspects -- just pure, classic interpretation -- then I recommend this performance.
The recording quality is excellent, even flawless, though it comes from a 1970s performance. I have listened much to this performance on LP vinyl records and can attest that this CD is probably better. There are some places where I can even hear him hum (quietly) in the background. The quality is clearer, in fact, than the Hewitt CDs, in my opinion, though of course those are good too.
The original performance included the second book, WTC II, which was also available in the original LP recordings. However, this CD has only book one. This is most unfortunate, because the second book was as good or better. It is tragic to lose the second half of this performance. I wish a studio would publish book two on CD! Meanwhile, get this one before it too disappears....
An Alternative to Edwin Fischer.......2003-01-18
This WTC may not be as celestial as Edwin Fischer's, it may not be able to take you back 300 yrs to an empty chapel as Richter's; it may not be so dramatic and explosive as Gulda's; nor is it so charming as Nikolayeva's or so gentle as Schiff's when you first listen to it.
Here we have a profundity touching deep into the heart of music. It never ceases to bring to your mind the beauty of the Bach's offspring, particulary those by Mozart and Chopin. Here, to a certain extent, we also see Ignaz Friedman sort of imagination in the recreation of music (e.g. his Mazurkas) when we hear the songs and steps in his rendition and it's simply overflowing with chamber music: every phrase itself is almost a tune and every note has a life of it's own. But it never has to resort to Gulda's dynamic manouevre, and it's nothing like Richter's frenetic rendition, it's nonetheless deeply spiritual in it's own way.
In touch, it's never percussive and is rather similar to Moiseiswitch but with a softened "grand style" more geered to a full and cozy sense of chamber music. Actually, the more often you listen to it, you'll find it more sophisticated and more sublime than Nikolayeva's; and Schiff in comparison, simply lacks one whole dimension, though it's also soothing it it's own way.
If you don't mind the old recording sound of Edwin Fischer, he would be the golden choice. But with Horszowski we have an alternative, all the more so when it's a 70's recording in good stereo sound. But of course if you have a taste for Glenn Gould, any subsitute would point to Tureck and in which case, an alternative would rather be Gulda instead. The only drawback to this WTC is, you may not be able to unearth it's treasures in full until you go back to it a 3rd or even a 4th time.
