5 out of 5 stars Brahms Piano Concertos: The Best.......2007-07-05

I did not buy these recordings; they were given to me by Professor Andreas Schulz, Gewandhausdirektor. I had expressed to him my longstanding enthusiasm for the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra as well as my thoughts that the new conductor, Riccardo Chailly, along with Martha Argerich, had interpreted Schumann extremely well. The two CDs of these recordings, along with a few others, were sent by him to my room in the Leipzig Marriott.

What a gift! I had not known Nelson Freire previously. I quickly became acquainted with him through a google search and acquiring CDs of performances of him playing Schumann and Chopin. He is an extremely sensitive and intuitive performer with as good a technique as any living pianist. Riccardo Chailly came to Leipzig after being the conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, an orchestra that he had honed into the clearly world-class orchestra that it is. (I consider the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Dresden Staatskapelle, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra to be the three best orchestras in the world.) The end result of this combination of the pianist and the conductor are these two superlative recordings by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.

The First Piano Concerto is played with all of the struggle, the masculine sinewy sound of conflict that you hear other pianists portray. However, Nelson Freire also finds the poetry that resides in this music. The first piano concerto was written by Brahms shortly after his enthusiastic reception by Robert Schumann. A short time later, in a fit of depression, Schumann jumped off the bridge spanning the Rhine near his home in Dusseldorf. After he was taken from the water by fishermen, he was sent to an asylum in Endenich bei Bonn, where he died two years later. Brahms had to wrestle with his lack of understanding of these events as well as his growing affection for Clara, Robert Schumann's wife. You can hear all of this in Nelson Friere's interpretation of the First Piano Concerto.

The Second Piano Concerto is the product of Brahms' more mature years. It is pure vintage Brahms, especially in the hands of Freire and Chailly. The transparency of Freire's performance along with Chailly evoking the response from the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, especially with the dark, earthy sound of the strings, makes this performance so superlative that it seems that one is hearing it for the first time.

The overall assessment is that these are the best performances of both Brahms Piano Concertos available. Admittedly, there are other truly superlative performances. For example, Edwin Fischer performs in a most excellent manner in the Second Piano Concerto with Furtwangler. I have not heard a performance of him playing the First Piano Concerto.

Top performances deserve top rating. These performances are most highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but magnificent!.......2007-05-15

Inspired conducting, impassioned playing, great sound...these are the recordings of the Brahms PCs I've been looking for. No, they're not perfect--these are LIVE performances--but they are absolutely wonderful. In short: WOW!

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding Brahms piano concertos.......2007-01-13

This double CD, with both of the Brahms piano concertos,is truly excellent, with the Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire (a friend and frequent collaborator of Martha Argerich) an excellent soloist and very good support from Riccardo Chailly conducting the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig.-
These interpretations are in the same league as those of Emil Gilels and somewhat better than those of Artur Rubinstein.- Outstanding sound.-
Very recommendable.-

5 out of 5 stars New benchmark recordings of the Brahms 1st and 2nd.......2006-08-12

If you've ever heard - really heard - Nelson Freire play, then you'll need no further encouragement to acquire this 2-cd set. These performances are breathtaking in their intelligence, subtlety and emotional depth. Here is a towering artist, at the peak of his form. Don't miss out!

3 out of 5 stars A nearly forgotten pianist returns with a nearly forgettable Brahms CD.......2006-07-28

A lot of eyebrows went up when the Great Pianists of the Century series on Philips decided to include Nelson Freire. He has a grand total of nine recordings in print, and most date from a brief heyday thirty years ago. Now Decca has elevated Freire (friend of Argerich, born in 1944) to major-label status. That's puzzling, because his two Brahms concertos are consistently underplayed. There's almost no rhythmic vigor, and in many places Freire is so reticent that he disappears into the wallpaper.

The opening of the First Concerto is a prime example. The pace is deliberate, the accents mild, the phrasing soft. In the slow movement Freire turns dreamy and rather aimless. The finale finds him willing to play a genuine allegro, but again his attack is much less strong than what we're used to in Brahms's heeoic piano writing--reticence is Freire's preferred style, no doubt about it.

If I didn't feel duty-bound, I doubt I would have continued to the Secondd Concerto on my own. Freire's first entrance is limp and colorless, but then he finds some power by fits and starts. Chailly conducts carefully, and as usual the Concertgebouw is magnificent. The Scherzo is fiendishly difficult technically, and happily Freire makes a genuine attempt to attack the difficulty head on--this is the best movement in both concertos. The sonority of the solo cello supported by the lower strings is ravishing in the slow movemnt. You quickly discover, however, thnt neither the soloist nor the conductor can sustain a slow line with any kind of inner vitality. My duty ends by reporting that the finale is respectably played, but don't expect even squibs, much less fireworks.

P.S.--The Gramophone reviewer raved about this CD and called it his top choice in the Brahms concertos. Okay.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06

The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.

As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.

However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.

But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.

My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.

Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars The latest incarnation of a great collaboration.......2006-07-24

Because the two Brahms piano concertos have been recorded so often, not enough new liisteners may know about this 1967 set from Barenboim and Barbirolli. These are grand, broad readings--the Second Concerto in particular is among the slowest on record. Don't mistake that for lack of drama. Barenboim throws himself into every note, and the sympathy between conductor and soloist reaches very deep emotionally (Gilels and Jochum, also slow, sound ponderous and "official" by comparison.) Barbirolli and Barenboim give themselves time to phrase with great expressivity, but what really keeps the tempo from lagging is Barenboim's powerful pianism, abetted by EMI's under-the-lid miking. There's not a seocnd when the piano sound isn't two inches from your ears--it's as thrilling as sitting on the bench beside Barenboim. Barbirolli captures the Jovial essence of the Academic Festival Over. quite wonderfully, as he does the dark drama of the Tragic Over.

Nothing here is less than memorable. If you want to hear Brahms interpreted very personally, as if he really matters, this set is one of a kind.

4 out of 5 stars (Not) only for Moravec fans!.......2006-04-07

The prize here is the recording of the 2nd Concerto, which is imaginatively played and beautifully accompanied. Pianophiles will be as interested in Moravec's interpretation of the 1st Concerto, who gives a poetic interpretation of the piano part, but the performance as a whole unfortunately suffers from the same problem as Moravec's latest recording of Beethoven's 4th (versus the perfectly accompanied Franck and Ravel on the same CD) with Belohlavek, also on Supraphon: chef and orchestra seem uninspired already in the orchestral introductions, then appear to merely follow the soloist rather than interact with him, as if intimidated by his superiority. Sound quality has less natural bloom in No. 1, although both suffer from lesser resolution in the highs, usually more typical of early than late eighties digital (these are DDD recordings from 1988/89). Paradoxically, in the recording of No. 1, the piano sounds less bass-shy than the orchestra, although balance problems alone cannot account for the fact that, for example, right from the start, the drums in the introduction can barely be heard (and so on, until one adjusts and keeps listening only to the impressive piano playing). My desert island choice for No. 1 remains Fleisher/Szell, although, if as I do you like listening to alternative versions to keep your mind and appreciation of a composition afresh, I recommend Solomon/Kubelik, Curzon/Szell, Rubinstein/Leinsdorf, Rubinstein/Reiner and Serkin/Szell.
Another reason I like Moravec's interpretation of the 2nd Concerto better, apart from the rather successful, more organic orchestral accompaniment, is that here one finds more of the pianist's idiosyncratic (though never outrageous or unjustified) touches. If there is another modern (from the digital era) recording of No. 2 as individual, tasteful and memorable as this, I haven't heard it, and the sound quality is more than acceptable, though again not of reference quality. Here too, my desert island choice remains Fleisher/Szell (making that double CD an obvious first choice, the more so as it includes reference fillers), with Solomon/Dobrowen, Rubinstein/Krips, Anda/Karajan and, last but not least, Moravec/Belohlavek favourite versions for alternative listening, to somewhat lesser extent also Gilels/Jochum and Backhaus/Boehm. In a nutshell: get this for No. 2, and since you get both at mid price, think of No.1 as an attractive bonus!

Greetings from Switzerland, David.
