From the Artist
Kolbeinn Bjarnason, flute Valgerdur Andrésdóttir, piano

Album Description
This recording presents the complete flute music of the British composer, Brian Ferneyhough. These remarkable compositions set a new standard for flute players–one that requires the comprehension of a highly developed notation which present technical complexities that have no equal in the world of classical flute music. The performances on this CD are approved by the composer (a rarity!) who worked for several years with Icelandic flute virtuoso Kolbeinn Bjarnason on the interpretation of these compositions. The music ranges from the ear-opening Superscriptio for piccolo to the incredibly sensual Mnemosyne, for bass flute solo, with 8 bass flutes accompanying. Ferneyhough's reputation for writing the impossible is dispelled by the concentrated musicality of Bjarnason's uncommonly fine flute playing.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent in parts, but let down by some very ordinary music.......2003-11-17

An entire CD of music for piccolo? It seems like such a bizarre idea that it's perhaps surprising how close this disc comes to succeeding--even given that the performer is the phenomenal Italian flautist Roberto Fabbriciani.

The first four works are all excellent. Janacek's March of the Bluebirds--based on a theme also used in his wind sextet Mladi--is a delightful, throwaway two minutes. This is followed by two Italian works, Castiglioni's Musica Vneuhkokvahja and Donatoni's Nidi which--in different ways--explore the wonderful lightness that's possible in solo piccolo playing. The following piece, Ferneyhough's Superscriptio--the opening piece in his Carcieri d'Invenzione cycle--is perhaps the closest there is to a classic for solo piccolo, and Fabbriciani plays as you would expect from the dedicatee of this difficult work.

The rest of the disc is less impressive, Casterede's highly camp La Belle Epoque, for piccolo, flute and piano, caricatures Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven in a sub-Poulencian manner, while Loeb's Six Preludes are largely uninteresting exercises in musical Orientalism. Isang Yun's Allegro and Camillo Togni's Tre Preludi do at least rise several levels higher than the immediately preceding works, but it's hard to imagine wishing to return to them on a regular basis.

Stockhausen's Tierkreis--a set of twelve melodies for the signs of the Zodiac--follows next. It's enjoyable enough, without coming close to the best this composer has to offer. The disc then ends with the only orchestral work on the disc, Valentino Bucchi's brief Piccolo Concerto--the title being a pun. This is a rather stylistically eclectic piece, worth hearing a couple of times but not inviting repeated listening in the way the first four works on this disc do.

Overall, this recording is about what might be expected from 65 minutes of piccolo music. Despite the number of weak works in the program, it's worth considering, given the comparatively low price and the outstanding music in the first third of the disc.

Amazon.com essential recording

Collecting five CDs for about the price of three, this set of Boulez recordings is without parallel among the conductor's new-music releases. Imagine getting Boulez's celebrated single CD of Luciano Berio's Sinfonia and Eindrücke and his equally impressive single CD of Arnold Schoenberg's Pelleas und Melisande and Variations for Orchestra, bundled with four pivotal Elliott Carter works, Sir Harrison Birtwistle's electrifying ...AGM..., Gérard Grisey's Modulations, Iannis Xenakis's Jalons, Hugues Dufourt's Antiphysis, and Brian Ferneyhough's Funerailles, and you have an idea how far this set stretches.

There are the uproarious moments of Berio's clattery free-for-all approach easily juxtaposed against Schoenberg's more measured Variations, as it illuminates the crossroads of serialism and standard classical methodologies. The most astonishing moments come in the Kurtag songs, themselves echoing Pierrot Lunaire, and the Birtwistle work, which crosses extended vocal patterns with exclamatory orchestral interruptions to great effect. For anyone interested in Boulez's conductorly contributions to the postserial world, this is a surefire collection that opens the window on the great one's magic with difficult, thorny music. It also serves as a fascinating primer on the expansion of new music's techniques, especially when you consider the Elliott Carter works, all of them post-1975 and each uniquely expanding the American canon immeasurably, or the Grisey, Dufourt, and Ferneyhough works, as each of these composers came of age in the post-World War II era. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars A great purchase for new fans modern music.......2001-04-02

I just started getting into modern music a few years ago and this set was one of the best purchases I have made so far. It introduced me to several of my now favorite composers, as well as starting me off with a top-notch recording of their work. The $10 per CD price is very good for contemporary music (which usually runs closer to $20 for a CD). The music covers several composers in much greater depth than your average sampler, and every CD in the set would make a great individual purchase. In addition to the content, the recording quality and performance on each track is uniformly flawless. If you are new to avant-garde music, think of this set as an introductory greatest hits compilation that will remain a treasured purchase no matter how big your collection gets. If you're an experienced contemporary music collector you probably bought this CD as soon as you saw the names on it and the price.

5 out of 5 stars powerful showcase of the last century.......2000-04-10

I concur this is the only place to find these masterworks, not all but the Carter pieces,Penthode I know of no other recording. This is a marvelously opaque like work, somewhat dry, Carter's penchant utilization of a rhythmic cell passed around the rather dry sounding ensemble. Especially exciting here is Antiphysis by Hughes Dufourt,a French composer philosopher who is quite outspoken on carrying the torch of European post serial modernity. This work is a veiled flute concerto, largely in two seamless movements where the soloist is simply part of the forever trmoili textures the first half of the work, blizzards of flute tones are conveyed, large doses of fluttertonguing, fast filigreed moments. At times the chamber ensemble seems to engulf powerfully the soloist knocking it out of commission and at times Dufourt with incredible surges of timbre. This is a surface piece of incredible power, long stridently sustained chords, like the internal tension of a suspension bridge, You are waiting for something to snap, it doesn't. The percussion moments in this work as well create great waves and impeccably controlled thunderous roars to stop on a dime. You would never know this piece is actually a miniature flute concerto. The flute lines tossed into all registers with colourful again fluttertonguing, wisps and long scale-like lines. Dufourt is not a prolific composer. So this is a rare treat.

Boulez's residencies with The Chicago Symphony over the past ten years has produced a few profound gems from the Post Romantic world, one not entirely his, and Schoenberg's tone poem 'Pelleus und Melisande' in one of them. This is an early post Wagnerian score double the legth of his equally successful 'Transfigured Night'.Unless you know the motives Herr Schoenberg had utilized from the original Maeterlinck play, the work engulfs one as one colossol tone poem/commentary on the wanderings and below the surface anxieties of the union of this pair of lovers, who never quite get it.Schoenberg as Debussy had visions of the darkest moments of the Maeterlinck with rounded timbral orchestrations. Boulez holds a taut reins here and controls this arduously long work with great vision. It's dark colours and thick textures are all balanced properly. You never sense the works length,it moves, lumbers into its moments quite well and when it hunkers down finally on an old fashion minor chord it is arresting.Chicago plays this music as no other, music written for them, with there overdosed, overexposed repertoire of post Romantics from the Solti Years. They put this expereince to its test in the 'Orchestral Variations' also of Schoenberg, a much later work from his brief year spent in Berlin in 1930, a time when he had full confidence in his visions for the dodecaphonic language. Boulez also enjoys this work with a full spectrum of shapes to lend direction from chamber like moments of some of the variations to discreet solos and duets emanating from the orchestral forces to full bodied statements. This is quite an achievement for this newly found language. But you can see Schoenberg moving into these untenable, new regions. For the isolated sense of expressionist colour seems to have been forsakened here, abandoned for a larger homogeneous one. If you know his 'Five Pieces for Orchestra',you sense an entire universe of difference. As if Wagner now has returned to haunt him. The Ensemble Intercontemporain bring a real sense of immediacy to the Ferneyhough, 'Funerailles',a score scaled down to 2 Violins, 2 Violas, 2 Cellos, Doublebass and Harp. It's in the same gestural habitation of the Dufourt, large textural plains, regions of tremoli, punctuated freely. You may not recognize Ferneyhough here this is an early work with large gestures, not the finely attenuated approach to structuring and shaping timbres as you might find for instance in his 'Etudes Trancendental' or the string quartets. Without the Harp here to punctuate the one-dimensional string timbre produced here this work would indeed have been tedious and bland. The right amount of penetrating timbre is here to give the work the thornyness it deserves. If you are a Xenakis fan then his Jalons (steps) here is for you. This is music about the density and timbre transformations. Almost like standing in front of an industrial contraption waiting for it to turn off or break down or heat up.Blast furnace like timbres and strident whistles are here.

5 out of 5 stars Best Single Collection of Modern Music.......1998-12-21

Listen--this set is actually a great buy, though it may seem like too much of an investment. But for your 45 bucks you get five discs (only $9 per disc), and it has to be one of the best collections of modern music ever, played by Boulez' spectacular group, Ensemble InterContemporain. Look at what you get: Schoenberg's Variations for Orchestra (his most beautiful serialist composition); Berio's Sinfonia (a contemporary classic); Carter's Oboe Concerto, Mirror on Which to Dwell, and Penthode (for Carter fans, the disc is a must, since it's currently the only place you can get the concerto and Penthode, both essential Carter); Kurtag's Troussova (searing), Birtwistle's AGM (powerful, mysterious), Ferneyhough's Funerailles (electric), and Xenakis's Jalons (one of his best). For one purchase, you'll find yourself right in the thick of modern music.

Ferneyhough, an English composer, is the father figure of a movement in contemporary classical music called the New Complexity, and his music is a fascinating synthesis of the highest delicacy in instrumental writing with visceral fervor. The works on this disc are all excerpts from an immense cycle entitled Carceri d'Invenzione (Dungeons of Invention). The strongly drawn architectural features of the music, inspired by the series of etchings by Piranesi, are impressive; but it is the fragile, expressive textures that are finally most moving and memorable. --Joshua Cody

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ferneyhough for beginners?.......2002-01-01

This was my first experience of this composer, whose works I knew to be controversial, even notoriously so. Although I'd come to grips with some classics of serialism over the last few years, I still had some trepidation as I started the disc. What was it like? Interesting (that perhaps almost goes without saying)...thought provoking...but also often beautiful, as well as strange. La Chute d'Icare is actually a short clarinet concerto. The sound is like the sonic realisation of some fantastically imagined aviary, with the clarinet soloist the most glittering of all the birds. Messiaen never sounded much like birdsong to me, but this did. The soloist, also the dedicatee of the work, brilliantly plays a part that sounds well-nigh impossible for anyone else. Next on the disc are two solo works: one for piccolo (a feast of fluttertonguing, trills, runs, rapid changes of pitch and intensity.... another virtuouso display), then a second one for violin, played by Irvine Arditti. This "intermezzo" is a kind of deconstruction of violin sounds. Ferneyhough describes it as an ugly piece, but it didn't sound it to me, savage perhaps, but not really ugly. Next, the 9 movements of the "Etudes Trancendantales". This is another mysterious, even misleading, title, for the piece is actually a song cycle, with a fragmented text, sometimes broken up into individual syllables and noises, with varying instrumental accompaniments in the different movements. Imagine a sort of "Marteau sans Maitre" with 20 more years of development. The last piece (Mnemosyne, for bass flute and pre-recorded tape, which seems to consist mostly of flute sounds, on this disc played by the same player)is the Ferneyhough that any open-minded listener would surely enjoy hearing....at least once! Again, there is a range of virtuoso sounds from the live flute, with a slow, almost hypnotic background from the tape. Ferneyhough says that he wants the effect of music played underwater, like Debussy's "Engulfed Cathedral", and he surely achieves this. You've heard of "Water Music", now listen to "Underwater Music". The playing, so far as one can tell, is fantastically brilliant throughout the whole disc. Maybe there are better starting points for Ferneyhough's music, but this disc seemed a good one to me.

5 out of 5 stars Great showcase of complexity and ferocious virtuosity.......1999-04-11

It's always heartening when a composer writes solo unaccompanied works. In a way it is a patrilinear legacy to foster succeeding generation of interpreters. Ferneyhough's music is an elitist affair, for musicians you need to devote a substantial part of your performing life to it. For us listeners there is no compromise here, why should there be? Ferneyhough's creativity has developed slowly over his career always searching for the next link in his vast labyrinth of musical procedures and processes. It has yielded a vigorous body of work with a devoted following. The "Superscriptio" is a piccolo solo, long a neglected instrument inhabiting the tippy-top of the sonoric field. Ferneyhough brings a fine sense of the natural purity of its sound traversing all its strident registers in a hightened display of rhythmic complexity. When we come violinist Irving Arditti we have a premiere interpreter of Ferneyhough and here the "Intermedio. . . " reveals an ugly virtuosity in all registers with fast clipped double stops, an anguished-like gestures. Arditti however has developed a distanced objectivity in anything he plays, as if his playing is a mere passive conduit for these coldly abstract musical structures . And finally the "Etudes Transcentales" we have full forces of the remarkable Nieuw Ensemble. Ferneyhough's innovations to my mind remain purely technical for he feels he needs to shape and share a dialogue with the past to find a frame for his work and expressive content His structural-global resolutions, the way a piece unfolds in time, are indeed commonplace. Frequently we find Ferneyhough resorting to traditional handling of his materials, simple contrasts, simple traversing of registers, relying on textural change to refocus. And the listening experience is all too often opaque and disorienting, like our emotive sensibilities must somehow cope with blizzards of ill-define materials. Here in the "Etudes Transcendantales"" we have an obvious reference to Listz, who was also a technical innovator who also resorted to a programmatic frame to contain his pianistic innovations. The texts here in the "Etudes" Songs 1,2, and 6 by Ernst Meister and others by Alrun Moll are all beside the point for it hardly matters if the text is heard. Couched in complex linear textures with continous linear movement in microtones, you become swept into the sheer complex power of this linear motion. The synergism which occurs in the marvelous counterpoint does not help to focus your hearing but disperses it. No image really emerges and Ferneyhough's linear technique is so refined so multi-directional that a programmatic element, as these texts, remains at a distance. The vocal atonal linear leapings doesn't help matters. This type of vocal writing (an historical affinity dating to Boulez's "Le Marteau. . . ") leaves the text by itself, words are not conveyed nor their images ,the voice is simply another instrument, not a conveyor but an accomplice in pitch linear purity.Ultimately this language of musical complexity is a relative one and within the force fields of postmodernity it is certainly a legitimate agenda for a creator to foster a musical language that will remain an exclusive creative enclave for some. The fact that this complexity will always appeal to a select few is commonplace and a sign that the ears as a perceptive organ haven't developed in its history. That is an historical perspective, not one which is created.

So much here that is terrific. Brian Ferneyhough's Superscriptio is the *best* piccolo piece ever. Chris Dench's "Caught Breath of Time" combines stunning architecture with sensual surfaces. Michael Finnissy's "Ulpirra" is deep and penetrating. Jason Eckardt's "Multiplicities" is beautifully fragmented. James Dillon's "Sgothan" is a tour-de-force with an incredible singing/playing ending that must be heard to be believed. Nancy Ruffer's performances are exemplary.
