This disc is remarkable in many ways. Not only does it bring together two of opera's reigning lower-voiced superstars, it shows them at their best and presents, in addition, repertoire we rarely get to hear. In the past, Samuel Ramey has occasionally come across as bland and Thomas Hampson as just a bit too eager for a man with what is essentially a very lyric baritone voice. But their chemistry here works: Ramey is filled with passion--some of it comic (as Don Pasquale), some of it vitriolic (as Fiesco), and some of it loony (as Attila); throughout, his burnished tone never lets him down. Hampson is charming and in handsome voice as well--equally light and patterful when comic (a delicious Malatesta), and nicely dire (Ezio and Rodrigue). He isn't up to Simon Boccanegra's stature either vocally or emotionally (for that, listen to the classic performance of Piero Cappuccilli, but the sheer loveliness of his singing is enough to carry the day. A must for fans of either gent, and an intelligent, unhackneyed collection of music to boot. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
The Troubles with Thomas.......2005-12-31
This could have been a fantastic album, but ends up falling well short of that owing to Thomas Hampson. I have never understood the fawning praise Mr. Hampson receives. His voice is unpleasant, his musical interpretations are well-below average, and his coloratura is completely non-existant -- for an excellent example of this, compare, in the Pasquale duet, Ramey's exquisite descending scales in the "aspetta, aspetta, cara sposina" phrase with Hampson's sloppy counterpart, "il poverino, sogna vendetta". The "i" in "poverino" is supposed to carry over four separate notes, and not one note, a whooping cough, and a closing note! Judging by some interviews I've read and/or seen, Mr. Hampson appears to be a decent, down-to-earth gentleman. As an opera singer, however, he's mediocre at best. This recording is worth owning thanks to Ramey, who is absolutely top-notch.
Make sure you buy 2!.......2005-01-05
One to keep, one to give away. You'll wind up burning one for the car and one for the office regardless. A friend lent me this CD and I've bought 4 so far. One of the best! I can't recommend it enough.
But one complaint.......2004-08-21
Amusing concept, wonderful singing. But one question: Why was the Dandini-Don Magnifico duet from LA CENERENTOLA not included? Since they wanted to have two buffo duets, I think that would have been a better choice that the MATRIMONIO SEGRETO number.
Voices of power.......2004-03-21
It had always been my impression that when basses and baritones got together to sing, they were either intent on murdering each other, or else they were engaged in a jolly, male-bonding patter song. "No Tenors Allowed" (NTA) has examples of both of these types of duets. But the lower voices are also opera's authority figures, so we also have a smattering of Doges and Kings on this CD.
The basso cantante of Samuel Ramey and the baritone of Thomas Hampson swirl together like chocolate liqueur in coffee. This CD vibrates with dark sonics. Both artists bring their considerable powers of interpretation to these roles--no fooling around with buffo here, just wonderful singing.
There are a total of eight duets by Cimarosa, Donizetti, Bellini, and Verdi on this CD. Among my favorites:
"Cheti, cheti immantinente" from Donizetti's "Don Pasquale"--The elderly Don Pasquale (Ramey) and his personal physician Malatesta (Hampson) plot to catch Pasquale's young 'bride' in the garden with her lover. This might not sound like a particularly jolly situation, but the duet captures the verve of a hilarious plot--lots of "oh ho's," "ha ha's," and "hee hee's" scattered throughout--the very epitome of bass-baritone hilarity. Listening to this duet, I'm almost tempted to regret Ramey's preference for serious roles over lighter repertory like "Don Pasquale." His old buffoon schemes and whines and chuckles without a trace of vulgarity, just pure musicality. Both singers are patter-perfect.
"Suona ogni labbro il mio nome" from Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra"--This is the first of two great duets between adversaries Jacopo Fiesco, patrician and currently Doge of Genoa (Ramey) and Simon Boccanegra, a plebian and the future Doge (Hampson). Fiesco still hasn't forgiven Boccanegra for stealing the love of his daughter, Maria, who has borne Boccanegra a daughter out of wedlock. In this duet, Ramey's fury contrasts vividly with Hampson's pleading, "Padre mio, pieta t'implora..." as the baritone tells him of the loss of his little daughter (Fiesco's granddaughter). What Boccanegra does not yet know is that his lover, Maria has died. This duet is another fine example of a Verdian father-daughter heartbreaker, in which both men are mourning the loss of a daughter. Hampson sings with dramatic conviction, almost a sweet sound compared to the menacing undercurrent of Ramey's bass, but also dignified.
If you are a fan of the lower fach in Italian opera, NTA is a 'must' for your CD library.
A Masterful Double Bill.......2002-08-13
This is one cd that I may actually wear out. I love this collection! What a marvelous idea, to highlight the most under-represented opera format--the bass/baritone duet--and bring together two of the current best--Ramey and Hampson--to pull it off. I am a bass-baritone and find all these selections a wonderful change of pace from the usuall opera recording. The liner notes are hilarious, with their tongue-in-cheek (or not) poke at tenors. My only complaint, and it is a significant one, is this the libreto. Come on, guys, no English (or German or French) translations? It would have helped with the duets from lessor known operas, Cimarosa's, for instances. But all in all, an excellent effort that I recommend highly!

Here the remarkable young Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez not only offers us what we've become accustomed to---gorgeous, graceful singing of very difficult bel canto gems (in this case, high-flying, virtuosic arias from Rossini's Semiramide and L'Italiana in Algeri. He also ventures into unknown waters. He sings an aria added by Donizetti for an Italian production of The Daughter of the Regiment ("La figlia" rather than the usual "La fille") which turns out to be just right for his voice, and he charms with his crisp diction and youthful approach. Paolino's aria from Cimarosa's Il matrimonio segreto is a substantial piece of bel canto writing, with some nice coloratura fireworks near the end which Florez sails through with ease, and Rinuccio's ditty from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi---perhaps the most heavily orchestrated piece he's sung and stylistically the opposite of anything else on the CD---is also tossed off with true élan. On the other hand, Florez has a lot to learn about the Gluckian style, judging from his Romantic approach to Orphée's aria, and his French could use some brushing up if he's going to sing anything from Halévy's La Juive, although the vocal hurdles that the composer put in the tenor's way do not seem to bother him at all. A surprising disappointment is "La donna e mobile," which is over-sung and charm free. But can any tenor around be expected to sing all of these (and a few others, too) perfectly? Florez remains a true delight, his sound beautiful, his production easy from top to bottom. Despite reservations, highly recommended. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Great Voice.......2007-05-13
This young tenor is a worthy successor to Carreras, he will be a superb singer.
Florez shines in enticing variety, versatility of repertoire.......2005-03-14
An altogether delightful disc. The arias on here that do not require heavy pryotechnics are delightful and reveal a very pleasant insouciance of tone and character that are very fitting, only very intermittently offset by a slight hardness of tone on top. The aria from Semiramide and cabaletta to the charming Cimarosa aria serve up the fireworks, so common on the first disc and perhaps the one that followed it, for those listeners who are attracted to this disc by having heard especially the first and highly brilliant all-Rossini outing. Rossini is also well represented here by a charming romanza and lively cabaletta from Italiana in Algeri.
Several rarities are included, unlike with the above, and he makes something very charming and inviting of the selection from Verdi's Un giorno di regno (Verdi's rarely performed comedic second opera). The alternate Italian aria from Fille du regiment is a welcome supplement to his having recorded the more famous aria for Tony on his second recital disc. The aria from Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia (an easy equal to Lucia in inspiration) is also a highlight, Florez's insouciance of manner here particularly telling, as it has fatal consequences for his character and all this character's buddies in this opera. Eleazar's aria, or one of them, from Halevy's La Juive reveals the possibility of a little greater reach into repertoire that approaches the dramatic for this tenor - but one senses as well that he will and can, should take his time getting there. The tribute to Firenze from Gianni Schicchi at or toward the end of this recital is compelling enough to convince the most hardened travel cynic buying this disc to call the airlines/hotels, inns to book for there right away. The "Che faro" from Orfeo (but sung in French) is an ideal vehicle from which Florez can deliver such a sublime and heartfelt lament, as heard here, albeit a bit too closely recorded.
Carlo Rizzi, not always dependable, gives fine accompaniments here. The engineering does place the voice just a bit too forward, however, yet ironically a voice that has developed full body and better evenness than when his first all-Rossini disc was recorded (yet still certainly too early to tackle the part of Eleazer on stage as of yet), erasing any concerns I may have had at that time. For some readers, any problem with the sound quality here might demote this outing to four stars, but taking the singing, the interesting repertoire chosen for this disc, and the fine, deft accompaniments from Rizzi and the Verdi orchestra from Milan (some alternate band to Muti's peerless one at La Scala? - the endless nature of so much politics in music), have me sticking with five, and with a mind about several other vocal recital discs that have been getting rated too highly on this website.
Ditto. Just received credible correction from Vince Chau of one piece of misinformation I submitted here. The aria that Florez sings from La Juive belongs to the second tenor part of Leopold, not that of Eleazar. While I am on the subject of corrections of my reviews, he also had said that I had incorrectly challenged Gheorghiu's Laggiu nel Soledad for having ended on a high C. Not having been so graphic as that in how I describe what happened there, I had led him to believe and perhaps a few others that I was saying there was no high C in the aria at all, so I have just taken pains to fully explain the situation on the new Gheorghiu Puccini recital by thereby editing my review of it. I would not trade Gina Cigna's ONLY high C TOWARD the end of Laggiu nel Soledad for all the gold in Fort Knox, or Nilsson's or Tebaldi's ...
Third album by Florez.......2005-01-01
This, the young Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez' third album, includes more of the bel canto repertory with which he has risen to international fame. Hearing Lindoro's scene from L'Italiana in Algeri, to cite one example, will make the first-time listener realize why. The tenor's firm, even tone, agility in coloratura and secure high notes--all the way up to a solid high D in one selection--are still sources of wonder.
"Great Tenor Arias" also includes forays into other areas of the repertory, from operas which Florez has not yet sung and may never sing on stage. Indeed, one hopes that no one talks him into trying Verdi's Duke of Mantua any time soon--his rendition of "La Donna e Mobile" is solid, if a bit lacking in charm, but the entire role would surely overtax his vocal resources. Puccini's Rinuccio, from the evidence of Florez' take on the aria from Gianni Schicchi that concludes this somewhat short (less than an hour of music) CD, would be a more comfortable fit, but he is already too much of a marquee name to take on what is basically a supporting role.
If this CD as a whole leaves a slightly unsatisfying impression, it is because the experiments by Florez remain just that--vocal explorations rather than performances undertaken out of deep dramatic or musical conviction. In addition, some of the more obscure music, Cimarosa and early Verdi in particular, is not of the highest quality, and here Florez' comparative inability to characterize vocally becomes a liability. All in all, despite the outstanding singing, a newcomer to this tenor's art would probably be better served by starting with one of his two earlier albums, the first of Rossini, the second Bellini/Donizetti.
Florez in another dazzling disc!.......2004-11-25
Juan Diego Florez is definitely on a spin and that well-deserved
journey is the product of fine training, excellent coaching, and a keen sense of pacing in a career that tends to push the gifted ones too quickly. Though Florez' crowning gifts are in the bel canto repertoire, with this recording he just starts there and pushes into the range of more lyrical arias, and to these ears he succeeds in demonstrating how special is this beautiful voice.
Even the decision about lineup of arias on this fine recording is intelligent: Florez moves from Gluck, Cimarosa and Rossini into Donizetti, Verdi and Puccini with great ease. Here is a tenor who can belt out the high notes to please the balcony but who is equally sensitive to the diminuendos and barely audible phrases that mark the true artist.
Dashingly handsome, and physically as well as vocally a fine actor on stage, this CD simply further demonstrates that Juan Diego Florez is one of the brightest tenors before us today. It is interesting to see how many Latin American tenors are suddenly becoming so important - Villazon, Calleja, Alvarez, Florez, etc. Refreshing! GRady Harp, November 2004.

Customer Reviews:
The Mastersinger.......2000-06-24
If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.

Customer Reviews:
Mediterranean sunshine.......2005-03-25
There are many reasons why this recording is the most played opera in my extensive classical collections.
First off, the music is pure delight. Composed in the 1790's, the Matrimonio is the fruit of an older Cimarosa expressing himself in the mature style of the Dramma Giocoso. The Neapolitan composer uses his understated but highly refined craft to speak directly from his Mediterranean heart, and the result is nothing but warm musical sunshine. Cimarosa's sense of the dramatic is very apparent in this opera: the pace is always moving, the arias, duets and ensembles follow one-another naturally, almost as if moved by their own gravity. Also, the composer's uncommon understanding of the human voice and its capabilities produce melodies that are as easily-followed as they are fresh, pure and dynamic.
If I had to desribe Cimarosa's music with one term I would say "immediate." In many ways it is like Mozart's in the early 1780's - but without the occasional somber tones or the deliberate counterpointal artifices.
Another qualitative aspect of this recording is the fact that rhere is no "weak link" in the cast of singers - which is indeed rare. Everyone is in character and sings in a way stylistically a propos for this type of music. I like to be able to understand every word sung without having to follow the libretto.
The real shining star is Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, who is entirely believable as the lovably-bumbling parvenu seeking to marry his daughter into the Nobility. His recitativi are in character but not overly-acted (and never overly-sung), and his part in the many ensembles never fails to give a wonderful sense of color to the scenes. Just listen to him in the opening of "Udite tutti, udite" or in the truly fantastic duet "Se fiato in corpo avete." Furthermore, his pronunciation of Italian is virtually flawless.
The direction of Barenboim is in style because it reveals and highlights the "fire" of Cimarosa's spirit. Although Barenboim's use of the rallentando as a dramatic effect is a little heavy-handed at times, I don't have anything but good to say about his baton in this case. Acoustically the CD can be considered a bit dated (it is a remastered version of a 1976 LP), but it is still the best professionally-recorded version of a Cimarosa opera, with the Pittor Parigino a distant second.
I wholeheartedly recommend this recording of an opera that was a highly-acclaimed succes at the time, but that has unfairly been relegated to the status a historical curiosity by Romantic and post-Romantic musicologists. In truth, the Matrimonio belongs in the same class as Mozart's italianate Da Ponte Trilogy (Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and Cosi' Fan Tutte) - only this is in many ways the "real thing" from the land of the Dramma Giocoso.
What key is joyous laughter in?.......2004-03-02
I first heard this recording when it was released on LP in 1976, and I have been under its spell ever since. It was the first Cimarosa opera I'd ever heard, and I found the musical style delightful. For the uninitiated, it's something of a mixture of Mozart and Rossini at their most vivacious. I'm not usually a Barenboim fan, feeling that his stodgy sense of rhythm and prosaic approach to phrasing tend to bog down his performances. But here he conducts like a man possessed! The true Italian spirit of the dramma giocoso shines from every bar, and the singers follow his lead to a man(and woman!). Every vocalist characterizes his or her role perfectly, and the variety of vocal colors and approaches is kaleidoscopic. True, Auger's is not the most Italianate of sopranos(tending more toward the voce bianca style of a German soubrette), but this is soon forgotten in the vivacity and utter charm of her portrayal. Listen for her aria in Act I telling the English "milord" why she is unfit to become a Contessa; utterly delightful! Julia Varady has just the right "waspish" tone as the termagant sister Elisetta, and Julia Hamari is a befuddled(yet oddly young- and beautiful-sounding!)Aunt Fidalma. Ryland Davies could also do with a little southern warmth to his tone, but he also silences all criticism through his artistry and vivid "acting with the voice". Alberto Rinaldi makes a rather dull and "po-faced" vocal quality work in his favor as the less than scintillating Count Robinson. And that brings us to the shocking surprise of this performance: Fischer-Dieskau taking on the basso buffo role, and succeeding! This man is a genius! All the pomposity and preening of this would-be "bourgeois gentilhomme" is on display, and needless to say, the musical side of things is flawless. There are a few minor cuts within numbers, and some recitative is jettisoned(for a note-complete performance, your only choice is the Lopez_Cobos recording, which is sadly lacking in the dramatic vividness that makes this recording unique), but this version of a sadly neglected masterpiece will not soon be surpassed. I did deduct one star as the sound quality is not all that it should be; interestingly enough, the original LP's were less distorted, and the sound on LP was richer, with a greater sense of stage space. Nevertheless, this is the Secret Marriage to own. Happy listening!

Customer Reviews:
Tenor-lovers Alert!.......2001-02-25
For some of the most beautiful lyric tenor singing available on a disc, please sample this recent release on DGG.
Mr. Simoneau's recording are few and this one is particularly fine in its aria selection and the singing is simply above reproach.
This is a lyric tenor voice in the style of Schipa. Should you have doubts, listen closely to the aria "Una furtiva lagrima" from Donizetti's opera L'elisir d'amore. The pitch is perfect, the line is firm and the voice is beautiful in it tonal quality. The duet from Faust is sung lovingly and phrased to perfecton by this husband and wife vocal team, a feast of simple lyric beauty.
There are no fillers on this disc. Every duet and aria is a winner and I should perhaps note that since Mr. Simoneau's French diction is flawless, the arias from operas by Mehul and Halevy are particularly welcome. As a footnote, I should like to add that if you are able, find a copy of Simoneau's recording of the "Sanctus" from the Berlioz Requiem with Munch and the Boston Symphony. It makes all recorded competition sound amateurish.

Album Description
Domenico Cimarosa (1749-1801) was one of the most important and successful Italian composers of the eighteenth century, with a considerable international reputation. Among his admirers were Goethe and Stendhal, the latter saying of Il matrimonio segreto that "None of the women I have enjoyed gave me such a delightful, careless moment." Cimarosa beat out Mozart for the post of court music director in Vienna, and at the height of his fame, Il matrimonio segreto became his greatest success. Emperor Leopold II was so taken with the opera that he invited Cimarosa and the cast to dine with him after the premiere, and then to return to the theater and repeat it all over again! Today, Il matrimonio segreto is one of the few comic operas to look back on an uninterrupted performance tradition of over 200 years.

Customer Reviews:
Even better on Hybrid SACD - Florez in another dazzling disc!, .......2006-12-04
Juan Diego Florez is definitely on a spin and that well-deserved journey is the product of fine training, excellent coaching, and a keen sense of pacing in a career that tends to push the gifted ones too quickly.
Refreshing! Grady Harp, December 06
