5 out of 5 stars Love this music.......2007-03-20

This is such a great cd for relaxing with a glass of wine and candles. It really makes the soul feel good.

5 out of 5 stars new age/space music prime choice.......2006-11-07

Kerala Dream is a very special album of space music, akin to that heard on NPR's "Music From the Hearts of Space". The last cut, "Samadhi", is especially fine and contemplative, with a subtle sitar creating soothing melodies and a calming mood. Some of the songs have flute and bass. This album has a variety of sounds, from environmental sounds from India, to vocals and sounds from the Amazon. This album goes especially well with yoga practice and exercises. This album is a exemplary blend of musical forms from India, environmenatal, and Western styles. I use this album to go to sleep to and I frequently do not remember the last cut since by then, I am fast asleep. Very relaxing album and I highly recommend it to yoga enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars The title says it all........2006-03-19

If you are looking for music with an Indian flavor, and a sure bet, look no further. This is great music for Yoga practice, or just relaxing. Sample Durga Shakti, and Guru Brahma and you 'll see what I mean. The sounds of Amazonian frogs and birds, the sitar, and awesome vocals make this CD unique, and just a pleasure to listen to.

    5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece restored!.......2007-06-05

It's wonderful that this opera is being performed again (allbeit not in a fully staged version yet). This was Donizetti's last work before he went mad from syphillis. It's a cross between bel canto and French grand opera. This is sung in original French and uses the edition by Mary Ann Smart.

The CD is a live recording from 2 performances that opened the ROH's 2005 season. Great sound engineering! The audience is so quiet and the voices and the orchestra are captured so well it could pass as a studio recording.

Mark Elder leads a well defined and passionate performance by the orchestra (tho occasionally too loud), and the lead singers are well sung. Giuseppe Filianoti has really gorgeously clear and noble voice as Dom Sebastien and sings beautifully (omitting the high notes for his big aria 'Seul sur la terre', however). Vesselina Kasarova is a very exotic sounding Zayda. Pretend you don't understand French when she is singing, and she will carry you off into the sands of Africa and the parapets of the spanish castle (really wonderful voice actress, but really can't sing French inteligibly either).

Simon Keenlyside is the Abayaldos to die for. So heroic and utterly convincing that the irony that he is supposedly the bad guy of the show is prominent. I want to fight for the dude when I hear him rather for the supposedly good guys. Carmelo Caruso was a late substitute as Camoens, and he sings well, though has such a prominent vibrato that everything sounds shaky. All the minor roles are well sung and the chorus is awesome.

The music is really wonderfully descriptive and moves the story forward well. I quite love the Act III funeral music (snippet of it is introduced as the overture). The dratted thing is that after Act III, the final 2 acts don't stand up quite well to what comes before it.

At any rate, this is the best recording of this opera available. Very nice packaging by Opera Rara, too. The 3 CDs set comes with a thick booklet detailing the history of the opera and the real life events it was based (loosely) on, with complete synopsis and libretto in French and translated English. Worth every penny of the retail price to me!

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars NOT THE BEST FROM OPERA RARA.......2007-06-15

I give this performance 3 stars only due to the singing of soprano Majella Culagh. She screaches every time she gets to high notes, her voice is very sharp and unpleasant at this moments and not clear most of the time. I am surprised by applaudes she gets from audience, but it is a life performance of rare opera, so people are pleased.

As far as opera itself, it is hard to judge when you have to cover your ears everytime the star of the opera is singing. My opinion: it is average Rossini. It has a few great arias and duet, after all it is Rossini. I spend a few days watching DVD Bianco and Faliero, which is without reservations is top notch Rossini, so after that one, Adelaide is just OK.

I will look for a performance with Mariela Devia though, there was a copy from Amazon.UK available couple weeks ago, in her hands the Adelaide may still shine. To quote Opera Rara Jeremy Commons "Rossini is never without vitality, and never without musical distinction. Even in his operas of minor fame, he never stands less than a cubic taller than most of his contemporaries".

Just a short outline of plot.
The action is based on real historical persons and events of Italian history in 10th centuary. Adelaide is widow of Italian king Lottario, who is murdered by Berengario. Berengario tries to force Adelaide to marry his son Adelberto to legitimise his claim to the throne. Adelaide resists and calls for help to Otto II, Ottone in opera, German king. He arrives to rescue her, falls in love and marries her, but not before falling into various traps provided by Berengario and Adelbrando. Historically Otto II then unites Germany and Italy under one crown, thanks to Adelaide, and is crowned the Holy Roman Emperor, but that is after the opera ends.
The plot is very solid, with characters who speak and act as real people.

It is short opera, 2 discs - 77 min and 52 min. Opera Rara's booklet and packaging is per their usual standards, which is never less than excelent.
Sound is very good. Scotish Chamber Orchestra plays well. Jennifer Larmore as Ottone does great job. Bruce Ford is very competent Adelberto.
But somehow all together it is not the best.

5 out of 5 stars Opera Rara Rocks!.......2007-03-03

Everyday is like Christmas with Opera Rara around!

Yet another great recording (and a live one) with Opera Rara faves Jennifer Larmore, Majella Cullagh and Bruce Ford. The Divine Larmore gives her many fans what they expect. (Why is this mezzo not singing in the States?)

The real treat for me is the duet in Act I with Ottone (Larmore) and Adelaide (Cullagh)...Wow...This is what great Rossini singing is all about. The pure sound and rockin' bel canto singing is to die for. These gals sure got it. Thank you.

As for the opera? Good? Bad? Who cares...It's Rossini done brilliantly.

Why are there no record labels like Opera Rara done out of the United States?? Huh?

        5 out of 5 stars A Triumph for Meyerbeer & Opera Rara.......2006-11-21

In my book Opera Rara can do very little wrong. All their recording are wonderful in every respect - singing, quality of the recording, packaging & booklet notes, etc. This recording is no exception. Though a highlights rather than a complete recording, this is the best Meyerbeer opera they've done, which is odd considering that of all Meyerbeer's Italian operas, this was his only failure. My only question is why they recorded this in highlights only & the others (such as Margherita d'Anjou which could use some cuts) in complete recordings. If you're looking to try an Opera Rara Meyerbeer recording, or want to sample one of his early Italian operas, this is the one to buy. Great melodies & exciting music, it's little wonder Rossini left Italy & went to Paris once Meyerbeer arrived on the scene.

5 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining & engaging opera, so easy on the ear..........2004-10-04

Meyerbeer composed less familiar operas (Il Crociato in Egitto--recorded by Opera Rara-- Emma di Resburgo, L'Esule di Granata, Romilde e Costanza, Semiramide Riconisciuta and Margherita d'Anjou)...

Meyerbeer's Italian operas are often dismissed as imitations of Rossini, but they were in their own time almost as popular as Rossini particularly in Italy on the 1820's...

Margherita d'Anjou, revived by Opera Rara after a century of neglect, dates from his Italian period...

The music possesses the characteristics for which the composer is known, inventive orchestration, poignant arias, effective applause-getting cabalettas, well-constructed ensembles, a certain degree of pomp, but much less as compared to his French (mostly Paris) period.

The score challenged the orchestra to make evident its technical merits, and David Parry with the London Philharmonic Orchestra are immaculate in this endeavor...

Highly entertaining & engaging opera, so easy on the ear... it shows how Meyerbeer used the musical conventions of the time to forge his own musical style, a style that was going to blossom to its fullest in his Paris years later on...

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price.......2004-05-11

Opera Rara recordings are very expensive, I have several, and I thought I wouldn't spend so much on an opera I'd never heard, probably not even if I had heard it and liked it. I debated the matter, listened to my other Meyerbeer CDs, read every review I could find, then bought the damned thing. It was an unconscionable thing to do with people old, sick, hungry, homeless, but there are those (I am one) who consider it just as unconscionable to spend billions to kill people. But the opera. I like it very much. As I read, this opera has traces of Rossini in it, but not enough to spoil it. I don't like Rossini (except the jewel of Barber, Una voce...). Also as I read, it is very showy, it is rife with virtuosity, but if you like that kind of thing (and I do), you'll probably enjoy listening to this. One fly in the ointment. I also read but chose to ignore, the recitatives are sung to a piano accompaniment. I thought I'd die when I heard the first notes of that, but actually they are very beautiful and do not hold up the flow of the music at all. I am liking this opera very much, and almost feel comfortable with what I paid for it.

        5 out of 5 stars highly enjoyable.......2004-04-26

Forget about the plot and just sit back and listen to the
music and the singing and you will be in for a highly
enjoyable ride. It is not a work of genius for sure but it
offers some very attractive music and in the right hands it
can be very effective. The cast is absolutely first-rate
with such Opera Rara stalwarts as Bruce Ford and Alastair
Miles and outstanding in the newcomers (to me at least!)
are Annick Massis, Daniela Barcellona and Fabio Previati.
Excellent contribution from chorus and orchestra and as
noted by other reviewers luxurious packaging and great
sound. Highly recommended to lovers of 19th century opera.

        5 out of 5 stars Delightful surprise!!!.......2004-01-15

How can we thank Opera Rara for making these obscure and almost forgotten operas available to us? Margherita d'Anjou is a most likeable and tuneful opera, a real discovery. If you love Rossini and Donizetti opere semiseria, trust me, you are going to love this one. The performance is outstanding, with 2 formidable young singers in their prime: soprano Annick Massis and mezzo Daniela Barcellona, both cover themselves with glory in some very difficult and demanding music, the rest of the excellent cast is worthy of them. Opera Rara booklets are in a class of their own, and since SONY, Universal and Warner have almost stop recording opera, it is urgent that you try this worthy effort. Do order it!!!

5 out of 5 stars pomp and circumstance.......2004-01-13

Nothing to say about the music, it's like the rest of his operas: Show-off without any real meaning. It's very well done, but one never really feels any sympathy, or identification, with the characters. Maybe he really only saw these years in Italy as a "grounding" for a later career ( Salieri adviced him to study the human voice in Italy). That would explain why the music feels so aimless.

        4 out of 5 stars Meyerbeer Rarity.......2000-02-18

Dinorah (also called Le Pardon de Ploërmel) is a quaint piece about superstitious Breton peasants, with some lovely music, especially for soprano. The opera premiered in 1859, with Marie Cabel in the title role; celebrated baritone (and acquaintance of Rossini) Jean-Baptiste Faure as Hoël, the romantic lead; and Charles-Louis Ste.-Foy as the comic tenor Corentin (like Ali in Azor et Zémire). The critic for L'Année Musicale praises all three principals, as well as the goat. (A subsequent goat was less well-behaved: it butted Dinorah into the ravine and jumped in after her.)

The opera is set in Brittany; the names Hoël and Corentin are genuine Breton names, as is the place-name Ploërmel; the pardon is a religious festival. Briefly, Dinorah's house has been burned down in a storm; Hoël, in hopes of getting money to rebuild it, has gone off in search of an enchanted treasure in a ravine. The only drag is that the first person to touch the treasure will die within a year; Hoël consequently lures Corentin into joining him in searching for the treasure. Meanwhile, Dinorah wanders about mad, as a result of Hoël's desertion. In the end, Dinorah inadvertently reveals the treasure's curse to Corentin, who now refuses to go in after it, and gets Dinorah to go into the ravine instead. She does; a storm hits; Hoël, finally recognizing her, runs in after her. The good-natured Corentin, showing no resentment of Hoël's attempt to get him killed (whioch indeed is treated rather lightly in the opera), runs to the village for aid, while Hoël, stricken with remorse, begs Dinorah to revive. She does, the two have a tender reunion, and Hoël persuades Dinorah that the previous year has only been a dream. Apparently, her house has, somehow or other, been rebuilt, since Hoël points it out to her. Given that Hoël's purpose in seeking the treasure in the first place had been to rebuild her home, this is somewhat puzzling.

But not too much should be made of the plot of this unassuming little piece. The characterization in largely adequate, and the music quite lovely. The only major defect is the overture, which is too long. Among the musical numbers, I single out for special praise Dinorah's two arias, her lullaby to her (imagined) goat, and her Shadow Song; Hoël's two arias, especially the Act III aria, "Ah! mon remords te venge"; and the couple's final duet. The most unique feature about Meyerbeer's music is the orchestration, which is very colorful, imitating for example the goat's bell, thunder, and frequently the singer's (especially Dinorah's) voice. There are a couple of brief interludes for the villagers, but at least there's no ballet. (Not that I have anything against ballet, just not in the middle of my opera, s'il vous plaît.)

The lead singers are Deborah Cook, who sings with ethereal beauty, particularly in the goat lullaby, the Shadow Song, and when reciting the legend of the treasure's curse, as well as the final duet; baritone Christian Du Plessis, who also sings beautifully, especially in the Act III aria, when he thinks Dinorah is dead; and Alexander Oliver, who sounds fine as the comic tenor (for example, in the Act I duet with Dinorah). The conductor is James Judd, with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Geoffrey Mitchell Chorus (London, 1979).

The notes are interesting and informative, though with a few errors (saying that the goat to whom the lullaby is addressed is the real goat); the libretto is riddled with spelling errors and typos.

        5 out of 5 stars Charming Meyerbeer.......1999-11-04

This work, a staple of such prime donne as Adelina Patti and Amelita Galli-Curci, has all but disappeared from modern opera stages. Thankfully, the people at Opera Rara have produced this recording, so those of us who are curious may see just what the opera has to offer. While it is not a masterpiece, it is quite charming and filled with much delightful music, not the least of which is the most famous aria, the heroine's "Shadow Song." That aria is well sung by Deborah Cook, small and fleet of voice (not unlike Galli-Curci) and capping the aria with a high F. The rest of the singers are great, with Della Jones and Marilyn Hill Smith in small roles. It goes without saying that Opera Rara's packaging and presentation are first-rate. An important addition to operatic recordings.

4 out of 5 stars 100 Years of Italian Opera.......2001-10-30

It was a wonderful experience to hear many of the songs in this series for the first time, and be introduced to composers one had never heard of before. It's time to retire the warhorses of opera for a while, and bring out some new (old) music. Mr. Parry gets full marks for this series, and I hope they release some more of them soon-- does anyone know why none have appeared since the 1820-30 CD? A slight grainy quality to some of the works and an occasional variation in recorded volume was a bit annoying, but on the whole these discs offer a variety of emotions, some memorable melodies (bel canto isn't all Bellini and Donizetti), and some real finds, such as Paer and Mayer.

5 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Addition to Your Library.......2001-04-05

The "100 Years of Italian Opera" series released by Opera Rara is unique in the annals of opera recordings. However, this installment is especially exciting as it documents the evolution of Italian opera during the 1820's, the decade when romanticism truly began to come into its own on the operatic stage. Opera Rara has lovingly compiled a variety of arcana written by composers famous and forgotten. Included is everything from overtures to arias, duets, ensembles, and entire scenes. Every vocal range is represented, and the dramatic material varies from old school subjects such as figures from mythology and antiquity to English monarchs.

This recording merits the highest praise for both its scholarly interest and entertainment value. Opera Rara has outdone itself with a beautifully produced booklet, though with its generous size and content, "tome" might be a more apt moniker. Each selection on the CD has a corresponding article in the booklet which gives the original cast of the opera, the singers interpreting the piece, a detailed history of the composer and the opera in question, an analysis of the music, and an Italian-English translation. Each article is thorough, fascinating, and well-written and substantially increases one's enjoyment and understanding of the selections. As if all this weren't enough, 19th-century drawings of composers, singers, librettists, and costumes are liberally strewn throughout and further serve to make these artists, and the operas they helped to create, come alive.

The singers are competent at worst, and at their best are excellent. Most of them are unknown, but some of Opera Rara's mainstays are featured here: Della Jones, Bruce Ford, Marilyn Hill-Smith, Yvonne Kenny, Diana Montague and Alistair Miles are all featured, and are all as wonderful as ever. Among the singers that may be less familiar, contralto Patricia Spence and mezzo Penelope Walker merit particular mention for their wonderful contributions to this recording. David Parry is competent and tasteful in his conducting as we would expect, and the Philharmonia Orchestra is in fine form. The Geoffrey Mitchell Choir provides the choral backup when necessary and also does a fine job.

With thirteen composers and twenty-four operas represented, it is only possible to discuss a few high points in the set. Those interested in Donizetti's oeuvre will not be disappointed, as five of his early works, all of which have yet to be revived in modern times, are represented here. Bruce Ford easily tosses off a difficult aria from the 1822 comedy "La Zingara", and Della Jones executes Byzantine coloratura pyrotechnics with confidence and panache in the rondo-finale from the obscure "Alfredo il Grande". A lovely all-female trio from his "Chiara e Serafina", and a grand and impressive bass aria from the tragedy "Il Paria" are other numbers that the Donizetti-phile will treasure. Bellini and Rossini are not forgotten, either. A recently discovered alternative aria from the former's "Adelson e Salvini" shows that even in his earliest works, Bellini was true to the lyrical, melancholy style we associate with his masterpieces. And the first of the Rossini pieces offered, a duet from "Zelmira", sounds for all the world like Bellini, despite predating the latter's first opera by 3 years.

Among the other composers featured are the prolific and underrated Pacini and Mercadante, both of whose careers eventually spanned Verdi's middle period. Pacini's "Il Contestabile di Chester", an 1829 work based on a Walter Scott novel, provides us with an exquisite love duet for soprano and en travesti mezzo-soprano. The woebegone farewell of the star-crossed lovers is interpreted with beauty and artistry by Yvonne Kenny and Susan McCullough. Della Jones again rises to the occasion in a ferociously difficult aria from Mercadante's "Nitocri", yet she is confidently in control of the death-defying leaps, scales, and trills that pepper the aria and which would so easily confound a singer of lesser abilities. A highly dramatic act finale from Mercadante's "Amleto" is also included, this selection featuring choral and ensemble writing that is so dramatic we have difficulty believing it is from an opera of 1822. Carlo Conti, a composer with whom almost no one this side of paradise is familiar, contributes a wilting and sad Bellinian lament from "Giovanna Shore" of 1829. This piece resembles a traditional heroine's aria di sortita, but it contains enough participation from the two basses that it becomes a trio. The best surprise of all comes from the selections by Carlo Coccia, a composer whose masterpiece "Caterina di Guisa" was recently successfully revived in Italy. This album features a remarkably beautiful duet from his "Rosmonda", a setting of the same libretto used for Donizetti's "Rosmonda d'Inghilterra." Again featuring Yvonne Kenny, this time with Diana Montague, the scene parallels Rosmonda's introductory scene in Donizetti's opera, but allows the pageboy Arturo to participate fully. The highlight of the entire set, however, is the final scene of Coccia's "Maria Stuart", an opera based on the same Schiller play that inspired Donizetti's "Maria Stuarda". Coccia's handling of the scene in which Mary of Scots confronts Elizabeth I is not as shocking as Donizetti's, but nevertheless brilliantly builds the tension in the Queens' encounter until they turn on each other. Coccia's librettist preserves more of Schiller's characters and this allows nine voices in the ensembles, making them unusually rich and varied in both their harmonies and counterpoint. The fact that these were two of Coccia's LEAST successful works had me salivating to hear more of his operas performed. Some of the other numbers, while not representing the best composers or operas of the day, nevertheless give us a more complete picture of the artistic climate in which some of the masterpieces were produced. This set is indispensible to anyone interested in early 19th century Italian opera, and may generate such an interest in those who lack it!

5 out of 5 stars Another feather in Opera Rara's cap.......1999-11-26

This installment in Opera Rara's "Hundred Years of Italian Opera" project again reveals a treasure trove of lovely melody and high operatic drama. The examples are well-chosen and really lovely, making one wonder at their neglect. One can almost hear history in the making, as these composers push the boundaries of musico-dramatic conventions. Listen, for example, to the excerpt from Mercadante's "Amleto," a Italian version of "Hamlet" which plays fast and loose with Shakespeare but is marvelous on a musical level. Mercadante includes whistling piccolos in the orchestration, which sound eerily like human screams, a truly bone-chilling effect. I was reminded of the "Dies Irae" of Verdi's Requiem. There is also a lovely aria a due from "Rosmonda" by Coccia, sung deliciously by Yvonne Kenny and Diana Montague. Kenny, who is featured prominently in this set, has lost some of the ease of her highest notes but sings with a beautiful line and an alertness to the dramatic situation. Other singers include Nuccia Focile, Della Jones, Bruce Ford, and Alistair Miles. An essential set for the lover of bel canto and for those who enjoy discovering (unjustly) forgotten works.
