In the presence of genius.......2007-03-13
I recently attended a concert by Alpin Hong in Ukiah, California, with a bunch of serious amateur and professional pianists. We were so awed (even the professionals) and said to ourselves, "We are in the presence of genuis!" I have never heard anyone able to play so fast (but also clearly) but also tenderly when called for. The Rhapsody in Blue was a highlight, as were the Ginastera Dances. If you know someone you want to sell on the idea that classical pianists are hip, take them to an Alpin Hong concert!
Excellent.......2007-01-29
I first saw Alpin play a couple years ago in Dallas. He came back this year to hold a master class for my school.
He is an excellent performer with tremendous amount of energy. If you've ever seen his Rhapsody in Blue (Gershwin) and seen other professionals play it on youtube, etc. you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. He plays with excellent clarity, technique, and most of all, passion.
Although the CD can not replace the passion and excitement of his performance, it is definitely a must-have. Also, I, like many others, was motivated by Alpin's performance.

I met Alpin in 2005 when he came to my small hometown in Griffin, GA. Immediately I knew there was something different not only about his personality but in his music. I have been playing piano for years and had heard many professional musicians throughout my life. I have heard some pianists that have really moved me emotionally - but none like this young man. That night, Alpin became a friend to me and a kindred musical spirit. If you have not listened to Alpin's music, then I strongly encourage you to listen for yourself. Every time I listen to his album, I am overwhelmed with the purity of the sound and yet the passion that enriches every tone.
Alpin, wherever you are right now, I just want you to know that Richard and I think about you all the time and we cannot wait until you make a tour back to Georgia so that we can hear you and see you again.
ELECTRIFYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-02-23
I just came from the Dame Myra Hess Noontime Wednesday concert at the Chicago Cultural Center and I must say I have never been so emotionally moved by a pianist before as I was with Alpin Hong. Not only was his performance a whirlwind emotional experience but his technical abilities were truly electrifying. After the concert I immediately went to the Cultural Center store and purchased his debut CD, as many others did. The CD was even better than his live performance and the recording quality is superb. Don't miss this artist, he is what the classical music world is STARVING for, an artist who gets so much joy from his performances and communicates that joy though his music. He takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride on this CD and his technical abilities truly must be heard to be believed. Yes, he is flamboyant, but his inner voices are always heard clearly and his nuances are poetic. I'm going to tell you right now, right here, that he will be known as the "poet of the piano". He is a magnificent artist of true PASSION!!
Alpin, thanks for signing my CD!!
Jeff
Classical music can be fun.......2005-09-11
Having met Mr. Hong and enjoyed his concerts, I can only wait for more CD's by him. He not only makes the piano laugh, cry and yell; he has a personality that makes an audience sorry that any concert is over. Because of his performance, I returned to piano lessons so I could learn a Brahms Intermezzo he performed so well.
