Andrea Rost - Le delizie dell'amor (Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti Arias) / Mackerras

Editorial Reviews

Hungarian coloratura Andrea Rost has had a fast rise in the opera world since her professional debut in 1989, and with good reason: Few singers are able to combine such agility and cutting power. At the same time, her performances of arias by Verdi, Puccini and Donizetti constantly pale in comparison to aural memories left by Maria Callas, who made all of this note-spinning astonishingly dramatic. Rost has plenty of expressive moments but she often stays on the surface of her characters, singing with the same aggressive, forward tone quality that wears thin over the course of this disc. --David Patrick Stearns

4 out of 5 stars Needs a little work.......2004-07-21

When i first bought this cd i was looking for someone new, because i tend to listen to the same artists alot. I was very interested in buying this cd because i had heard many good things about her at the Met. My first impression of this cd was that it was so-so. The more i listened to it though the more it started to grow on me. All of the arias are very nicely executed and you can tell that some real thought was put onto the more expressive parts. Her upper register is amazing. I haven't heard anyone hit an E flat with such force and brilliance in quite a while. The only thing i felt detreacted from this cd was the was she tried to over dramatize her performance the way callas did. What it ended up doing was instead of giving her phrases more of a natural flow that an artist with her type of voice tends to have, it made her sound just a bit caustic and broken, especially in the mad scene. ALl in all i found this to be a highly enjoyable purchase and well worth the cost. Al l she needs to do is give her arias just a bit more polish and try to kinda let things flow and she will be even better than she already is.

2 out of 5 stars Less Rost, more Machado.......2001-08-04

The best thing on this CD is Aquiles Machado - beautiful voice, good musicianship. Too little of him, alas.

As for Rost, screechy and capricious.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - A soprano soon to be acknowledged one of t. best.......1998-10-03

I absolutely adore Maria Callas. The first soprano i have ever heard live (and I have heard todays leading names) to give me something of the divine feeling Callas can give was Andrea Rost (at La Scala singing Traviata). She has a truly beautiful voice, great acting skills, and natural beauty. I strongly recommend this cd for the sweetness, and beauty of her voice as well as its artistic excellence. (not to mention the beauty of the arias themshelves)
