Amazon.com's Best of 1999

In a jaw-dropping return to his roots, banjoist Béla Fleck led a stellar lineup (Jerry Douglas, Earl Scruggs, Tony Rice, and Sam Bush, to name a few) through one of his finest albums. With incredible musicianship and a smidgen of Fleck's genre-hopping personality ("Polka On The Banjo"), The Bluegrass Sessions is fun, nostalgic, and inspiring. --Jason Verlinde

Amazon.com essential recording

Béla Fleck, the banjo-wizard leader of the fringe-jazz quartet the Flecktones, returns to more-bluegrass-oriented concerns with this 18-song outing, a complement to 1988's Drive and a more-traditional follow-up to 1995's fusion-leaning Tales from the Acoustic Planet. Most of these songs are instrumentals boasting Drive's core group of Sam Bush on mandolin, Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Tony Rice on guitar, Jerry Douglas on Dobro, and bassist Mark Schatz; they're augmented in spots by fine guest players such as Vassar Clements, John Hartford, and the incomparable banjo pioneer Earl Scruggs. Fleck's spidery, tasteful plucking style lends originals like "Major Honker" and "Katmandu" an ever-so-slightly offbeat air, while he gives classics like Scruggs's "Foggy Mountain Special" and "Polka on the Banjo" traditional readings that wouldn't be out of place at the Opry. Flecktones fans will find much to like in Fleck's rootsy playing, and so will bluegrass purists. --Gregory McNamee

5 out of 5 stars This is one of my favorit Bela Fleck records!.......2007-01-10

I love this CD, i think it is one of the best bluegrass collections Bela has produced, with a host of different styles and artists.

4 out of 5 stars A Rarity..........2006-07-19

It's rare when a sequel exceeds the original. This album, though, exceeds the first "Acoustic Planet" effort by Fleck.

Why? Well, the playing is better technically, if you can believe that. And the energy and drive is stronger here than in Acoustic Planet 1.

You also get treated to a greater number of original compositions on this CD. I've come to appreciate this dimension of Fleck's artistic gifts even more as time has passed. While he does do a lot of variations on derivative music, his original compositions are memorable, too.

5 out of 5 stars Hair Raising.......2006-04-12

I've had this album for two years now and it still sometimes makes my hair stand on end when I listen to it and I don't even consider myself a SERIOUS bluegrass fan. Absolutely amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding CD!.......2006-02-25

Bela Fleck is arguably the premeir banjo player in the world and he does not disappoint on this CD. His music and that of the musicians he has gathered to play with him is superb. If your feet aren't tapping to the music in short order, then you probably have a few disconnnected nerves leading to them.

If you enjoy Americana/Bluegrass/Country, then you'll love this CD!

5 out of 5 stars If I could recommend only one CD to anyone, this would be it........2005-11-20

This is the CD that was singlehandedly responsible for revealing my long-hidden love of bluegrass music to me. I can listen to it in any season or mood and at any time of day. Each performer on the CD has moved beyond mastery of his instrument to fusion with it, and the results are incredible to hear. My favorite track on the CD is "Buffalo Nickel," which combines a gorgeous wistful melody with a constantly shifting meter and an undercurrent of satisfaction. Other favorites include the rollicking opening track of "Blue Mountain Hop," the well-titled "When Joy Kills Sorrow," the lullaby favorite "The Over Grown Waltz," the deliciously fast ending track "Major Honker"...well, who am I kidding? The entire CD is amazing. It gets my highest recommendation. Don't waver. Buy it. You'll be glad you did.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14

I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.

Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.

The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)

The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.

"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.

"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.

"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.

When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.

To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it

5 out of 5 stars The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05

I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19

You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.

5 out of 5 stars What Great Music.......2003-05-11

I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.

5 out of 5 stars super.......2003-04-17

What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2007-01-13

My 2 year old daughter received this for this past Christmas, as she LOVED the original Veggie Tunes. Another hit has been found. We listen to Veggie Tales almost everywhere: car, home... Wherever we are, nearly all of the time. She just loves them and this CD helps keep her happy. She has even begun reciting large chunks of some of the songs-and asks for particular ones again and again. I recommend this to any fan of VeggieTales.

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection of Veggie-Tales Songs.......2006-03-05

This CD has great songs from several episodes of the Veggie-Tales series. My one complaint is that the actual "Bunny Song" was not included (so what if it's evil? They have Mr. Lunt's song in the third collection).

5 out of 5 stars Great album!!.......2003-07-20

We are Jewish, but I still love this album. There is no mention of Jesus or Christianity, it's just good clean fun. The only thing that made me slightly uncomfortable was a theme in one song of "if you believe G*d will protect you" Great music, funny for adults & kids.

5 out of 5 stars Just Plain Fun!.......2003-01-07

If you or your children are VeggieTales fans you'll enjoy this collection of some of the VeggieTales' classic songs.

It includes the VeggieTales theme song as well as such memorable Silly Songs as "I Love My Lips", "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything", "The Song of the Cebu", and "The Dance of the Cucumber."

In addition, it features songs from "Josh and the Big Wall," "Larry-Boy", and "Rack, Shack and Benny" such as the beautiful Broadway-like "Think of Me" lullaby.

This is a great CD for listening to in the van on car trips. Not only will your children be singing along, but you'll find yourself singing and laughing as well.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Little Songs.......2002-10-14

My niece is a huge fan of the Veggietales. I have to admit that I like them too. Veggietales are educational and fun. Bob the tomato and Larry the Cucumber have such a way of teaching kids the Bible stories. The songs are too cute. One of my favorite songs is The song of Cebu. Veggietales are something that the whole family can enjoy.

Like a prog-rock Pentangle, Renaissance served up a pleasing melange of classical, Celtic, pop, and rock influences that reached its peak during the mid-'70s recordings anthologized here. Live renditions of "Can You Understand" and "Carpet of the Sun" prove the band was as technically proficient (and long-winded!) on stage as they were in the studio. Annie Haslam's sweetly operatic vocals are complemented by orchestral-strength rock arrangements, including that obligatory Rickenbacker bass sound. With the inclusion of "Running Hard" and "Mother Russia," this collection features most of the band's best-known songs, although "Ashes Are Burning" is conspicuously absent. (Had to save something for volume two.) --Billy Grenier

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Strictly for Progressive Rock aficionados.......2005-10-08

If one's musical inclination lies in the fusion of folk, rock and classical music, then "Tales of 1001 Nights -- Vols. I & II" by Renaissance should resonate comfortably with you.

Similar in musicality to Mannheim Steam Roller, but interwoven with thoughtful lyrics from Cornish poetess Betty Thatcher, many of the masterpieces which brought international acclaim to this seventies 'art rock' group are faithfully represented here, both in their Carnegie Hall and studio recordings between 1971 and 1979.

While the inclusion of "Rajah Khan", "The Flood at Lyons" and "Sisters" would have been nice additions to either of these albums (or perhaps another album a la "Tales of 1001 Nights -- Vol. 3"), it is nonetheless an absolute delight to hear many of Michael Dunford's skillfully crafted compositions, Annie Haslam's soaring vocals, Terry Sullivan's classical interpretations on keyboard, Jon Camp's lead bass and John Tout's percussion preserved on two CDs for future generations.

Though critics often label Renaissance a 'pretentious' progressive rock band, one should consider their musical repertoire in the context of instruments available and musical styles other bands had covered up to this time, in which case one will then realise the innovation and intelligence of these meistersingers.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COMPILATION OF RENAISSANCE!.......2005-05-26

This CD is well worth owning - especially if you can only have ONE Renaissance CD in a "limited collection". Although a CD it should whet your appetite for more Renaissance - perhaps in other formats. The song "I Think of You" which in some ways sounds like it belongs in a romantic film is, to put it mildly, simply captivating. Annie Haslam's sexy and dream-like vocals carries you to the past and back again. Carpet of the Sun demostrates that the band did actually come across quite well LIVE and did not rely on studio "gimmicks" to project imagery, fantasy, and imagination. I prefer this CD to the "VOL II" version which contains mostly later songs.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent 70s Prog Rock!.......2003-04-05

The liner notes to this compilation say it all - there are two kind of people: those who've never heard of Renaissance and those that have and LOVE THEM.

For those who are new to Renaissance, this collection of their songs is a great place to start; this and "volume two." Think of Yes with an opera-trained female singer and you're kinda close to the Renaissance sound: progressive time and tempo changes, ambitious lyrical themes, the use of orchestral instruments, and the Rickenbacker electric bass! Jon Camp plays his Rickenbacker in the same manner as Chris Squire (Yes), approaching the bass guitar as though it were a melody instrument.

This first volume of their two-volume "best of" CDs begins with an "instrumental" that appeared on their first album, although this disc uses a live version. It's MOSTLY instrumental - a reworking of themes used in Russian classical music - though it also contains a vocalise from the angel-voiced Annie Haslam.

The CD continues with two more songs from the band's live Carnegie Hall album, including one of my favorite Renaissance songs, "Carpet of the Sun." (I'd have prefered the studio version of the song, from the "Ashes are Burning" album.) If you've only heard ONE Renaissance song in your life, it was probably this beautiful acoustic song; it was the closest the band ever came to a "hit."

More classic Renaissance songs follow, and one begins to hear the similarities between this band and that other 70s Progressive Rock band from England, Yes. But as wonderful as Jon Anderson's voice was (and still is, all these years later), Renaissance has the added advantage of vocalist Annie Haslam, who was trained by a world-reknowned opera singer and reportedly has an 8-octave range! Some may find this "opera" style of singing a little too much to bear, but it's the voice of the band and the reason so many fans love them!

If you like Yes and other Progressive Rock bands, check out this CD.

4 out of 5 stars "Novella" is not represented;but also Ashes are burning ..........2003-03-25

Well the album "Novella" is not represented here, but also "Ashes are burning" is almost completely absent (except on the tracks "Carpet of the sun" and "Can you understand"). Usually I don't like such collections, even though I must admit that instead both "Turn of the cards" and "Scheherazade" are well included within; and moreover the ouput is quite excellent for a novice, such a good representation of their remarkable career.Otherwise I can't feel to recommend this anthology- as a perfect place to start-to every one who wants to know the best Renaissance stuff;in fact despite of containing some of the best pieces of music art, regarding their most famous and probably best albums, you don't find here some other jewels (I think also of the splendid title track within the album "A song for all season's, which is probably their best symphonic prog mini-suite, or "Can you hear me" from "Novella" -another must-have- which unfortunately have not been included here.)

Remarkable, even though not completely essential, collection by Renaissance...

5 out of 5 stars your going to love this !.......2003-01-03

What a treat this CD turned out to be infact after playing it just once I ordered VOL 2. First of all the sound quality is remarkable considering this material comes largely from the early 70`s. This is a band thats not frightened to challenge conventional progressive boundaries, not only that they get big results . For me Renaissance are like a more restraint version of all the older progressive bands, they include odd timing meters and loads of classical orientation. Perhaps the big plus to Renaissance apart from there fantastic musical composisions is Annie Haslam, WOW what a great voice she has (beautiful) yet also dynamic, and the keyboard work of John Tout will surely not go unoticed on this CD. To sum it up it runs for over 70 minutes and in all of that time I cant say there is a bad song on it. When they compiled this CD they must have really thought long and hard about it because I have listened to many progressive bands and rarely before have i heard such beauty.
I guess for me this was a perfect selection (being new to Renaissance) I plan to get every one of there CD`s but this was a great place to start . I hope you like Renaissance as much as I do, if you like prog with classical influences your going to love this !

Many listeners will immediately recognize the opening piece on this disc, To a Wild Rose, one of MacDowell's best inspirations. However, even after a couple of hearings, they'll probably have trouble recognizing the rest of these pieces, none of which has the same kind of inspiration. MacDowell's deeply held belief that American music should copy European models was also his limitation. This music is historically important, but as a listening experience, it has the same effect as second-rate imitations of Grieg's Lyric Pieces. Barbagallo's lovely playing, a fine memorial to this regrettably short-lived artist, makes the music sound better than it really is, and the recorded piano tone is beautiful. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not so bad.......2006-05-16

The Amazon reviewer (Gerber) is too condescending by half. No sensible listener would rate these pieces as the equal of efforts by the likes of Mozart or Schubert, and Macdowell never claimed they were. They are interesting period pieces, composed with a good deal of charm and skill. It is amusing that Gerber likens them to second-rate versions of the Grieg Lyric Pieces - as if those pieces were worth imitating. Even Macdowell knew better than to copy junk like that.

5 out of 5 stars Simplicity, clarity, brevity........2001-08-17

These vignettes are not bravura performances (such as Chopin, Polonaise in A-flat), but short and brief tellings of a larger story.

The only criticisms I have is that pianist James Barbagallo played, "To a Wild Rose", a bit too fast for my taste, and MacDowell might have written a different, "From a Wandering Iceberg", had he lived to see the Titanic disaster.

5 out of 5 stars AN ENCHANTING PARCEL OF NEGLECTED MACDOWELL.......2000-07-26

A master of the piano vignette, as these pieces aptly and beautifully illustrate, MacDowell (1860-1908) remains, for the most part, remembered solely as the composer of "To A Wild Rose," the first piece in his collection of Woodland Sketches, Op. 51, incomprehensible as it may seem.

MacDowell is a bit of a paradox. Musically schooled in Europe, admired by Liszt, taught by Raff, and having his own viewpoints about composition, nobody typifies, personifies or exemplifies what one might call the "New England School" like MacDowell does. He's rather the Thoreau of New England music, actually, and especially the piano vignette, of which he is a master.

Just look at the titles: Woodland Sketches, Fireside Tales, New England Idyls, Sea Pieces. For me, this music is New England. There's more nostalgia in these four sets than you can shake a stick at! But, you know, in this case, more is better, not less. This music has no whiff of the salon; it's of a particular place in America that calls to our very roots. It has a feel that cannot be accurately described. A mood. An ambience that resonates to the bottom of our consciousness. We become immersed in a dreamy reverie of our collected experiences, nostalgic yearnings, of people, places and things that have gone before... and are no longer. It's that kind of music.

It reminds me of my childhood, of late Autumn days, the smell of burning leaves as Halloween crept nearer, of rainy days, of places lost and found and lost again, walks on the beach at sunset, quiet evenings watching the embers fade in the fireplace, of first loves gone, of lighthouses... of sweet and bittersweet melancholy. That kind of music. The kind of music that one "knows" without ever having heard before, innate within us all, and reaching down to our very fiber. And that is the wonder, beauty and profundity of MacDowell.

3 out of 5 stars good band that took the prog thing way too far.......2006-09-16

This band was very talented and adventerous but forgot a very important factor with popular music...the patrons are mostly kids and young people. Renaissance went way too far and essentially became classical artists. Classical is nice, I respect it but it lacks the energy and soul of rock and roll. Steeleye Span explored music of yesterday but maintained a rock edge. ELP and Yes veered into classical but also kept one foot in popular music. While i respect and admire that no one did what Renaissance did, the music did get a bit ponderous.

My favorite song on this is "Northern Lights". It is short, very melodic and has a hooky chorus yet it still features Annie Haslam's charming vocals.

If the group would have shortened up the songs a tad more, perhaps they would have had a larged audience.

5 out of 5 stars Strictly for Progressive Rock aficionados.......2006-05-08

4 out of 5 stars Straying ever so slightly from their classical roots.......2005-08-14

More than any other band in the progressive/classical movement of the 1970's, Renaissance stayed close to the symphonic stylings of the Romantic composers of the late 19th/early 20th century. They never relied on a "super-jock" instrumental soloist(i.e.Keith Emerson, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman)and seldom strayed far from acoustic instrumentation.

The songs on "Tales of 1001 Nights, Vol. 2" are culled from later studio recordings in this band's regrettably short career. The offerings from the album "Novella" showcase the band's jazzier side, including a nice trumpet solo. The "Song for All Seasons" album is well represented, and Annie Haslam's striking vocals are showcased on the melodically-pleasing "Northern Lights". "Azure d'Or" was much maligned by even the most devoted fan of Renaissance, but "Winter Tree" is a pleasant pop song, reminiscent of 80's synth pop.

Finally, there is a 24 minute live version of the elegiac "Ashes are Burning", which builds from Annie's vocals into a tasteful piano solo by John Tout. Jon Camp, one of the most underrated bassists of the period, uses his bass effectively as lead instrument, soloing to a dramatic build that breaks with Mike Dunford's chiming harmonics on the acoustic guitar, bridging into the return of the whole band and the orchestra, and Haslam's final vocal run. It is truly a sublime piece of music.

Renaissance was an incredibly talented ensemble and featured one of the loveliest voices in rock music. I still enjoy listening and find their music appreciates with time.

3 out of 5 stars I don't like the choice of"Jekyl and Hide" and"Winter tree".......2003-03-25

Well finally the album "Novella" is well represented (my complaint in the previous "Tales of...vol 1 regarded the lack of such jewels from Novella and also the absence of the title track from "Ashes are burning", here present ... but I didn't know the choice of the songs inside vol 2); instead the absence of "Opening out" from "A song for all seasons" is hard to accept...moreover some tracks from the disappointing album "Azure d'Or" are not so memorable in my opinion, apart from the usual stunning vocal performance by Annie Haslam!! The output is anyway good, as for the presence of the fantastic track "A song for all seasons", and for this reason I let you make your own choice!!

5 out of 5 stars 1001 nights of great music.......2001-07-13

I own all albums by Renaissance, and would not go without this collection or Volume 1. This is a great collection to have when one just wants to hear the best of Renaissance.

3 out of 5 stars Veggie Fun But Lacking.......2004-12-03

This VeggieTales CD contains songs from The Ballad of Little Joe, A Snoodle's Tale, and An Easter Carol. This collection of songs is not as good as previous editions only because of the VeggieTales episodes that make up the collection. A Snoodle's Tale was cute but only two songs ("I Want To Dance" and "Sports Utility Vehicle") come from that episode. An Easter Carol was ok but the beautiful "A Hope's Song" and funny "Boids" makes up for what is an otherwise lackluster collection of songs from that show. The songs from The Ballad of Little Joe are easily the highlight of the collection but I find it completely baffling that the Silly Songs With Larry song from that episode, "Bellybutton", was not included! Little Joe is one of the best VeggieTale episodes and "Bellybutton" is the highlight. I don't understand how it could be left out. Had it been included, with possibly a remix version, this CD would easily have rated 4 or 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars More Veggie Music........2004-10-18

VEGGIETUNES 4 is the 4th album of VeggieTales music to be taken from the VeggieTales videos and released on an album. About half of the songs on the ablum are from the video "The Ballad of Little Joe" which is a retelling of the story of the Biblical Joseph. Most of the other songs on the album are taken from "An Easter Carol". The few songs from "A Snoodle's Tale" are also included. My favorite songs on the album are:

"Oh Little Joe" (I, II, and III)

      "Boids"

      "Hope's Song"

      "Another Easter Day"

      "Sports Utility Vehicle"

      "I Want to Dance"

I love VeggieTales and the music that is created for the videos is very creative, intelligent, and entertaining. However, out of the 4 VeggieTunes albums, this is probably my least favorite. There's just not as great a variety as there are on the other VeggieTunes albums. Nevertheless, VEGGIETUNES 4 is not a bad album, it's very entertaining and VeggieTales fans of all ages will love it. The album is just not as good as the others.

      5 out of 5 stars Echo Chamber.......2004-01-19

Was thrilled to see the other reviews here. I happened to come in here to write a review because I put this disc on for the first time in ages. I was insanely obsessed with this one for a long time. The Visions are mindblowing and Berman's version just blows the doors off every other one I've heard. He plays these pieces as the spooky, incredibly modern pieces that they are, mixing muddy, dissonant grumblings with hammering lyricism, holding the tempos in the hypnotic range. Prokofiev often had more musical ideas in a single piece than a lot of composers could muster in their lives. Visions ranks with the Piano Concerto #3 as one of the premiere assemblages of brilliant fragments in the history of music. And there are so many of them that when they're all over, you'll be sad, but you can just go back to the beginning again.

One other note here. Schoenberg and his ilk did a lot to discredit the modern Russians, claiming that they were just hacking out forms that had been long ago interred by more advanced practitioners (like himself of course). A lot of that has worn off, but revisionism has still not landed Prokofiev his just due. Nevermind his lyricism, which is a match for anyone else, but many of his ideas and forms are very interestingly modern in other ways. For instance, he was a master of idiom and turning pieces inside out based on their structural underpinnings. His first symphony was composed as an exercise based on the thought 'If Haydn were still alive, what would he compose?' and Prokofiev's answer was much the same thing, with a few amendments to his musical language. (A wonderful counter to Shoenberg's cretinous progressive/positivist views of musical history.) Also, many of his compositions use popular idioms and take them apart, turning them into farces, in a very interesting way. Ravel's La Valse got a lot of attention for lampooning the Waltz, but Prokofiev wrote some of the most beautiful waltzes ever, and yet they are tinged with irony, nay parody. This practice is on display in these pieces, and the result is similar to what became the dominant mode of exploration during the Cool Jazz period: taking popular pieces and pulling them apart and reconstructing them in other forms.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful and sublime.......2003-03-31

Berman's interpretations are, as another reviewer opined, probably even better than what Prokofiev intended himself. The Visions fugitives are brief, flitting glimpses of Prokofiev's genius, and the 7th Sonata is churning as well. An amazing recording, and a great series

      5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2001-04-26

Very worthwhile recording. Gorgeous sound, strong technique, compelling interpretations. My interest was the Visions Fugitives, and they are probably not the way Prokofiev would have done them - but I value this rendition as much as his own (he didn't record the complete set anyway).

5 out of 5 stars I Always Come Back to This One.......1999-03-17

I buy lots and lots of classical CDs, and there are very few in the category of "I play them a lot." Maybe 5 or 10 max. This is one of them. The Visions Fugitives are a revelation. The Sonata #7 is always a surprise and a delight. This guy Berman plays Prokofiev like I don't know what. He plays Prokofiev better than Prokofiev. It's scary, how habit-forming this CD is. Don't say I didn't warn you.
