              Brian Reed is one of the Best virtually unknown songwriter/musicians of our time.
              I say virtually unknown because if you type in "The Evinrudes" on Google you will find many reviews of his work. You will find when you listen to the song lyrics that Mr. Reed is more than a little left of center, and that's a good thing.
              I know the CD is doing great in Europe and I hope it takes off here.
              People will love this music, once they hear it.
              I would snap this up fast because it may be the last Evinrudes CD recorded.
              You can hear a song Brian did as "Central High Tigers" called Island Boy on WhitePiano.com (Now, it's way out there).

              She's a little bit bluesy, a little bit funky, a little bit folky and a little bit jazzy, a little bit rock chick, a little bit grunge (and yet a little bit troubadour?)...but that don't make her any less brilliant. Rules For Jokers is anybody's album for 2001. Thea Gilmore is a wonderful songwriter and this new collection will both hook you immediately and then gradually draw you further in with every catchy one-liner and infectious melody. The lyrics alone read like a poetry book, and then she goes and puts utterly captivating tunes to these astonishing words. There are kicking songs here that rock along and put a massive smile on your face. This Girl Is Taking Bets, with its repetitious hook and mesmerising wordplay, is an absolute belter - one of many, including Benzedrine and Saviours And All. At the other end are the quieter acoustic numbers such as Holding Your Hand and The Things We Never Said that give the album a real depth of feeling. With a list of instruments that include kalimba, cimbala, mbira, Q-chord, slide didgeridoo and accordion, many of them played by Thea herself, it all adds up to a masterpiece. Thea Gilmore is a prolific artist as well. Just twenty one and she has three albums to her name, two released within six months of each other, and even those two had a mini album - check out As If - sandwiched in between. But despite this abundance of material you will not be able to find one weak track.

              Just a few words before we start. When it comes to music review, I'm always ceptical. I mean, if the stuff is good, you don't have to explain much. Just listen to the tune. Music speaks for itself and, quotin Bob Marley, "one good thing about music is that when it hits you, you feel no pain", or something like that. Whatever. My first and only contact with Thea Gilmore, so far, was through a promo cd on the current issue of MOJO magazine. The song in question was a cover version of Clash's "I'm Not Down", not included on this US release. It took just one listen to the song to make me realize that, whoever Thea Gilmore was, she was gifted. A natural artist. One of a kind. That's all it took. One single tune. Enough. As I'm writing this, I'm still unaware of any other song on the album. It's not really necessary, though. Get the album, as I will do myself, and you'll see what I meant. Sorry folks, for my poor English. PS: By the way, I love Bob Dylan, I love The Clash and I'll love Thea Gilmore.

              Some times along comes a voice, a character, a writer, a performer with an edge and difference to make a difference. Now I like Sarah Mclachlan but she is smooth and highly crafted. Thea is a Dylan, harsh at times, crude perhaps, punchy definitely. A unique perspective and a fresh one. I predict that she will conquer all before her and this album, in its double form shows all of that edge and vitality. I'm not going to pick out individual tracks but I will say that, you may start off listening to this album while you are doing the washing or playing with the computer....you will not finish this album that way. Prepare to be disturbed.
