Schütz: Musikalische Exequien

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Life was a precarious proposition in the time of Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672), what with plague, wars, famine, and governments that might put you to death for saying the wrong kind of prayers. Schütz himself enjoyed an unusually long life, but his native town, Weissenfels in Saxony, was ravaged repeatedly by plague, and in a period of a few years he lost both parents, his wife, his brother, and two daughters. This background may help explain the intense fervor of the Concert in the Form of a Burial Mass that he composed, with two thematically related motets for double chorus, as a sort of Lutheran equivalent to the Catholic Requiem Mass. The music, in a style indebted to Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi, is beautiful, deeply consoling, and performed with exquisite style and feeling. --Joe McLellan

5 out of 5 stars Speechless.......2007-01-06

I cannot say enough about this disc. My introduction to Schutz's music occurred 5 years ago, when I stumbled upon an LP recording of the German Requiem, and this Naxos CD served as my reintroduction to this work and Schutz in general. I find it interesting that these two major works were recorded onto the same CD, since they represent two of Schutz's most personal expressions in music.

The German Requiem was composed in the mid-1630s on the death of Schutz's good friend Heinrich von Reuss, on texts which were engraved onto Reuss's coffin (this work was written to be performed at the burial, hence the formal title 'Concerto in the Style of a German Burial Mass'). Comparable to his other output, this work is harmonically conservative, and very much in the old contrapuntal style cultivated in the 16th century. The soloists, choir and instrumentalists (viols and continuo instruments on this piece) do an outstanding job of portraying the deep emotional undertones present in the piece. The chorale settings in Part I (Track 2) truly dance, and the brilliant portrayal of seraphims and the Beata Anima by 2 soprano and a baritone soloist against the choir in Part III are executed well. In agreement with Mr. Morrison, the purity of voices and flawless execution on this disc is phenomenal.

The Seven Words of Christ is a later work, and also one of Schutz's most personal (this is speculated, since it remained in manuscript and was never published). On this recording, the choir sounds fantastic (similar to the Requiem) on the Introit and Conclusion. The instrumental sections (for viols and organ), Parts II and IV are convincingly meditative, as if to first prepare the listener for Christ's words, and then to allow him to reflect afterwards. The middle Part III consists of a recitative style portrayal of the Seven Words, with Jesus portrayed by a tenor and 2 viols, and narrated by a variety of voices. This particular tenor is exceptional, and even without knowing German one can imagine which words are being uttered...this is the extent of his wonderful expression. (For example, Jesus's beckoning cries of Vater [father] and Johannes [John] ache with pain and passion).

Of the closing 5-voice motets, 'Die mit Traenen saen' is frequently performed for its contrast of slow, sorrowful portrayal of 'They that sow in tears' with the fast triple time response of 'Reap in joy' in a bit of madrigalism on Schutz's end. I REALLY enjoyed the brisk triple time of this recording...some others which I've heard take it slower and safer, but fail to capture the 'Joy' inherent in this passage.

For anyone at all, lover of Schutz or not, I believe this disc would make a fantastic introduction to his music or addition to a Schutz collection. This recording is a steal...it's worth twice the Naxos price. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Beloved Schütz Works Radiantly Performed.......2004-09-22

The two important works here are the 'German Requiem' ('Musicalische Exequien'), SWV 179-181 and 'The Seven Words of Jesus Christ on the Cross' ('Die sieben Worte Jesu Christi am Kreuz'), SWV 478. The two short works that fill out the CD are the five-part tenth and eleventh motets from 'Geistliche Chor-Musik' ('Sacred Choir Music'): the 26th Psalm ('Die mit Tränen säen' ['They that sow in tears']), and 'So fahr ich hin zu Jesu Christ' ('So onward I go to Jesus Christ') whose text it taken from a funeral choral 'Wenn mein Stündlein vorhanden ist' ('When my hour is come').

The German Requiem and the 'Seven Words' are well-known and well-loved. They have many recordings. These are done by a a small group of soloists, the Himlische Cantorey, and a small choir, the Alsfelder Vokalensemble Bremen, all dedicated to presenting ancient music. The orchestra is the Barockorchester I Febiarmonici, all conducted by Wolfgang Helbich. All the participants are expert; one notes particularly the purity of tone of the singers. The recording was made at the St. Petri Dom in Bremen and the sound is that of a spacious cathedral whose warm acoustic lends a rich and lovely ambience to the music. It's really quite extraordinarily well recorded.

What can one say about the stunningly beautiful music of Schütz, surely the most celebrated German composer of the 17th century? His use of anguished suspensions, open fourths and fifths and slow harmonic motion all allow for the ringing tone of a cathedral acoustic and yet preserve absolute clarity of text. Having sung just last year in the 'Seven Words,' I can still remember the goosebumps that one gets from performing this serenely beautiful music. Given the stunning performances and recorded sound, along with the budget Naxos price, there is really nothing to keep anyone the least bit interested in this literature from snapping up this CD. It's that good.

Recommended without hesitation.

5 out of 5 stars Schutz at his best, a work expressing his faith.......1999-02-21

Both the Seven Words and the Musikalische Exequien come across as an expression of faith, both from Schutz and from Mauersberger (who kept that music alive both during the Nazis and Communists). I especially like the chorus "Weil du von Tod erstanden bist", as well as Schreier in the "Seven Words" on "Es ist vollbracht"

5 out of 5 stars Great recording of a Masterpiece.......1998-09-11

One of Schutz' best choral works is sung by Dresdner Kreuzchor... At first, you might not think much about this recording, but when you then hear it again, your view WILL change. Peter Schreier is a magnificent tenor, who glorifies this CD. If you're into Schutz and like to listen to great tenor voices, this is the CD you MUST OWN... Try it out!

5 out of 5 stars A beautifully nuanced performance.......1999-03-19

Somebody from Houston, TX, below, gives this recording three stars because of the very characteristic which, in my eyes, makes this recording so wonderful. Buy this disc and judge for yourself which one of us has it right. My Texan friend doesn't like the one-voice-per-part approach taken by Herreweghe on this disc. I, on the other hand, happen to prefer a small chorus composed mainly of the soloists themselves to a large, more impersonal, chorus. Moreover, small "choruses" formed by the soloists singing together were very common at the time most of baroque music was written. In fact, a large free-standing chorus was a rarity. When Handel sometimes employed such choruses, it was newsworthy enough to be reported in newspapers. So Herreweghe here is simply following the authentic performance tradition. There are still people who object to the whole practice of period performance. They are entitled to their view, but many of us are very thankful to conductors like Herreweghe for bringing baroque music to us in its original guise. This is a wonderful recording. In addition to Musicalische Exequien, it contains several motets and mini-cantatas from Geistliche Chormusic and Kleine Geistliche Concerte. Herreweghe recently revisited some of these pieces with Collegium Vocale (the CD is entitled Geistliche Chormusic). By the way, my Texan friend might like this second version of Geistliche Chormusic better: it is based on choral singing, and it is some of the most nuanced and spiritual choral singing there can be. I suggest that you buy both of these recordings. Only three motets overlap (SWV379, SWV391 and SWV386). One of them, SWV379 (So fahr ich hin zu Jesu Christ) is so preternaturally beautiful that you will want to own as many versions of it as you can. The soloists on the Geistliche Chormusic CD are Agnes Mellon, Mark Padmore and Peter Kooy. All of them have been performing Schutz's music for years. Combined with Herreweghe's, their collective insight into Schutz's music resulted in a truly outstanding recording. I have recently come by another Schutz recording which I greatly enjoyed: Schutz's Lamenti & Concerti (Musicalische Compagney). I think the group is now defunct, but back in the mid-80's they used to have some pretty impressive vocal group: Padmore, Cordier, Ragin and van der Kamp. Definitely buy it if you find it.

3 out of 5 stars Good for small ensemble, but I prefer larger ensemble.......1999-02-25

The performance is expressive, seems to capture the faith reasonably well. I happen to prefer full chorus and orchestra to the single voice ensemble., considering my belief that a good bass section is the foundation (especially with German composers).

      Album Description

"Outstanding recording presence…heavenly singing." - CLASSIC CD

To date The Sixteen and the Symphony of Harmony and Invention have made over 90 recordings, many award-winning, in a range of work spanning the music of 600 years, rediscovering and performing lost and little-known repertoire. From the devastation of Saxony in the Thirty Years War comes this very individual Requiem, first performed at the funeral of the aristocrat Heinrich Posthumus Reuß in 1636. The texts were engraved on his coffin in advance and the Prince, being a keen singer and not wishing to miss his own funeral music, took part in performances of the first part of it during his lifetime. Along with settings of the Nunc dimittis and Lord's Prayer is the last work Schütz wrote, the celebrated and beautiful Deutsches Magnificat for double choir. Long neglected as a mere "precursor" of J.S. Bach, Heinrich Schütz has come to be seen as ever more important and interesting as more is learned about him, and his music more often performed.

I sing bass in a churchcoir an we perform the Johannes Passion fro Heinrch Schuetz this year (2007) an Good Friday. Ik like the performance on the CD verry much. Apeccialy the bass party is verry good.

4 out of 5 stars Solid, but occasionally heavy and slow.......1999-04-27

Ehmann gets a good sound from his voices thoughout. I like his practice of using brass to double the choral sections in the "Musikalische Exequien", and he mentions a personal note of Schütz that the violone (similar to the modern double bass violin) was an indispensible part of that music. Of course a solid bass line has always been important to German music in any style period. Occasionally, Ehmann runs things a little slow, which makes it sound just a little heavy at times. Overall, it is a good recording, better than most, only slightly below the Mauersberger.
