Serge Koussevitzky conducts American Music

A few instances of ragged entrances and slightly askew odd-meter rhythms aside, this 1945 world premiere recording of Appalachian Spring reveals that the tonal splendor Koussy evoked from his orchestra enhances, rather than overpowers Copland's plainspoken idiom. Conversely, Melvyn Douglas's rhetorical enacting of A Lincoln Portrait's narration misses the point, while Randall Thompson's jingoistic oratorio The Testament of Freedom beats its drum at full blast, baiting rather than evoking the emotions. Blatty, cramped engineering renders Koussy's Sousa virtually unlistenable. A mixed bag. --Jed Distler
