Customer Reviews:
Excellent Pregnancy Relaxation CD.......2007-04-11
I bought this CD to practice relaxation in order to prepare for a natural childbirth. It was toward the end of my pregnancy but I listened to it almost daily and really enjoyed it. It is calm, not annoying, and I liked the verbal imagery the lady uses. I was indeed able to have a natural childbirth. It is definitely worth getting during pregnancy. I plan on using it in the future and even think I'll use it right now with my newborn when I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. Great CD.
A soon-to-be Mother's MUST!!.......2007-02-16
I was given this CD as a gift, and I call it my "God-sent gift" because it helped me overcome all of the "fears" I had about becoming a new Mommy. The meditations helped me focus on my breathing, and I remembered the music and visualizations as I was going through labor. When my baby was very young, she hated travelling in the car...I play Heartstrings and it calms her (and I) down immediately!!
good for bedrest.......2007-01-08
I bought this cd for my wife because the doctor put her on bedrest and said she needed to reduce stress. She says it was a great support for a difficult pregnancy.
Very relaxing.......2006-06-03
This program has saved my sanity! I've been using these meditations for about 4 weeks and already I can feel a positive effect in my mood and stress level. I didn't know what to expect when I bought it, but after a few days of doing one meditation plus a couple of affirmations every morning and night, I was hooked. The music is pretty and melodic, and the voice is friendly and soothing. When I use this CD I feel like I'm being proactive in the healthy development of my baby. I highly recommend buying this CD and making the committment to yourself to take 5 or 10 minutes out of every day to bond with your baby. It's made my pregnancy experience much happier and less stressful!
Love it!.......2006-05-13
Using this CD throughout my pregnancy really helped me relax and made it easier to deal with all the stress in my everyday life. The underlying music is really nice - it's not too "new-agey" like a lot of those other guided meditation CDs on the market. Also, the guided visualizations are short enough that you can do one or two a day without having to take too much time out of a busy schedule. I love this CD and recommend it to all my friends who are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant.

One of the 90's best.......2006-04-14
This is a fantastic album from beginning to end. Anyone into indie pop or just melodic indie should give this a listen. The harmonies, horns, and melodies are fantastic. I enjoy this far far more than any of the other Beulah albums. I'd pick this over Neutral Milk Hotel any day of the week.
This is an incredible band, not too often do they sound this good.......2006-01-02
I really love Beulah. I have to say I have quite the fondness for them. It started from hearing TCINC, and it really astounded me. It had so much life in it. He was hurting on all the songs but through a wonderful chorus of joy.
I for some reason hesitated in getting the other albums right away, I think it's cause there weren't that many. But this one, ooh boy this is great. To see where this band has travelled and to know that they truly like to get better and better. It's not that they improved their sound on TCINC, they were just trying on a different outfit.
Yoko is really good too, but don't ever expect to hear more of the same thing, Beulah are wonderful like that, they want you to enjoy their music, not think about how it should sound.
Historical.......2005-06-28
In my humble opinion this is one of the best examples of 90's lo-fi bedroom rock. In fact, I prefer this recording to just about anything by sebadoh, mountain goats, microphones, or even guided by voices. It's confident, yet completely unassuming. There's just a quiet swagger that the band had in the early days, kind of like they were discovering the new world. A very essential recording for anyone interested in the milestones of lo-fi indie rock.
unbelievable greatness.......2003-10-25
Beulah's 2nd album, when your heartstrings break, is probably their best album thus far. It's incredibly happy, fun and extremely well done. Beulah are definitely the best indie pop band going right now and everyone who has not checked them out should. Pick up all of they're albums while you're at it.

haunting arrangements of well known Krauss tracks. A must for any fan
An Audiophile, Earthy - Alison Krauss / String Quartet.......2005-10-28
This CD was the deciding factor for me to buy Von Schweigert VM1 Monitors with Subwoofer. There is just so much warmth, musicality, nuance and emotion. In some ways better than the original. Better in the sense that the String Quartet transports you to a new yet familiar world. So it is a combination of Bluegrass, Classical and Jazz. A must have album for Audiophiles, fans of Alison Krauss and for those exploring new forms of music.

Fabulous.......2007-04-02
Al Fabrizio is the real deal. His suberb mandolin playing makes you feel like you are in Italy. Very relaxing. I like the fact that it is all instrumental.
Serenata Italiana.......2000-11-04
Even though I was born in the US and in the 50's, this CD takes me back to the old country. Married to an Italian and being Portuguese, this CD brings me closer to my roots.
I have played it for many friends and families and end up either ordering copies for them or giving them mine. Over the last year I probably have ordered 20.
It is great for family reunions and background music for weddings.
Italian romanticism in a unique CD........1999-09-26
Italian popular music always brings romantic memories to our hearts. Al Fabrizio's mandolin is like the sunshine of Italy to our imagination.
For old-time romance, it can't get better than this!.......1999-05-07
Changed my entire attitude and disposition on life in a single playing, it was that smooth! After so much modern stuff, these two guys are a breath of fresh air!

Album Description
A delightful instrumental experience featuring Al Fabrizio on mandolin and Hugo Wainzinger on Guitar. From exuberant tarantellas to poignant ballads, this collection is a celebration of life and romance. Hugo's arrangements, coupled with the plaintive expressiveness of Al's mandolin demonstrate the timeless appeal of these traditional Italian songs--joyous, carefree, achingly beautiful and romantic. This music is the "stuff of enchantment". It is a perfect blend with wine, candles and pasta, and ideal for background at dinners, parties or lovemaking. Arrangements are original and several instruments enter into play in the background to lend an authentic cadence of Italy.

Italy Memories.......2007-04-02
The music of Al Frabrizo's mandolin is awesome. Takes me back to Italy and the quaint cafes.
The Italian Music Our Grandparents Would Have Played.......2005-06-07
When I passed by Al Fabrizio playing at a local art and wine festival a couple of years ago, I stopped dead in my tracks. It was as if he had instantly transported me back in time about 30 years to the home of my grandparents, who played just that kind of music. Scenes of hot summer days, Grandma's Italian cooking, and happiness filled my memory. I bought both of his albums without hearing another song and I was not disappointed. I'll buy the next one too!
Pure Joy!.......2003-01-11
The beauty of this CD brought tears to my eyes! How wondeful. I am sure others who enjoy and appreciate true classic Italian Mandolin music will agree!

Guitarist Russ Malone got his breaks backing crooners Harry Connick and Diana Krall, but with his mellow Georgia style and slow-smoked grooves, he's well on his way to a solo career. This all-ballad date is built around a sumptuous and hallowed string orchestra with more-than-capable arrangers at the helm: pianist Alan Broadbent, guitarist Dori Caymmi, and composer Johnny Mandel. With virtually every tune taken at a somnolent tempo, the date becomes more the moody sleeper than it need have been, despite Malone's occasional deft double-timing ("Wind in the Willow") and soaring ("Why Try to Change Me Now?"). A feather-light rhythm trio "features" veteran sideman Kenny Barron, whose piano barely peeks into the limelight. Established young groovemeisters Christian McBride (tip-toeing in baby elephant shoes), and Jeff "Tain" Watts (brushes only!) don't merely coast, but tip their knowing hands into nudging along rare old standards like Irving Berlin's "How About Me" and David Raksin's "The Bad and the Beautiful." Hearing Malone caressing the late Milt Jackson's title ballad may well draw similarities with Joe Pass's stunning technical wizardry and George Benson's deep-blue silk. We wouldn't be surprised (but might be delighted) to hear Russ unveil his own mellifluous baritone here and there on some date soon. Heartstrings might score points as a classic "make-out" album à la Johnny Mathis, except perhaps when Malone's deeply devotional side emerges on a final familiar hymn ("What a Friend We Have in Jesus"). --Fred Bouchard
Customer Reviews:
I agree with the next guy, the Feel Kills it!.......2005-09-08
As a jazz guitarist you always listen for what you can learn from someone, what they do well and not well. Russell is an amazing talent when it comes to chord melody playing. His voicings, along with slick tricks using harmonics makes for a beautiful addition to the standard approach to playing jazz guitar chord melody. What makes this CD difficult to listen to is his playing in time or with the rhythm section. His lines are mostly un inventive and have a very awkward feel. It does not have the feel of say, Grant Green or George Benson. It sounds as if his picking is not worked out well and subtracts from the over all rhythmic feel of the music. I would love to hear a record of just solo guitar from this artist!
Good!.......2005-03-09
This is a great cd, undoubtedly. His ballad songs are great and are honestly touching. However, when I bought this album, I was expecting at least one fast song that had an extraodinary 'typical' Russell Malone solo. I got this album after Sweet Georgia Peach and Some Of My Best Friends Are Guitarists. In the middle of that he transitioned from the ballad to a more upbeat tempo. That's what I was looking forward to. However, it turned out to be slow, but GREAT just the same. It taught me that songs don't necessarily need to be fast in order to be good. However, I am deducing one star (because not one of them was fast and after a while it got a little repetitious and boring. Take note: Each song if you listen to just one at a time, not one after another are great, but after over and over for ten songs in a row...let's say it gets a little repetitious.
1. Sweet Georgia Peach (Ron Carter (b),Kenny Barron (p), Louis Nash (d), Russell Malone (g)) Great songs and great interaction between soloists and comping. Very upbeat songs.
2. Bluebird (Benny Green (p), Russell Malone (g)) Nice soloing and nice time, shows their skill and how they don't need a drummer to keep time.
P.S Please Check Out My Reviews On The Recommended CDs!
Stunningly Beautiful.......2004-11-10
THE CD IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND RELAXING I REALLY ENJOY RUSSELL'S PLAYING I PLAY THIS CD OVER AND OVER AND NEVER GROW TIRED OF IT. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK RUSSELL
Simply Beautiful!.......2003-04-17
The songs are stunning, Russell's tone is lush and warm, and for those who have trouble with orchestral treatments in jazz, the orchestra seems to float in the background simply supporting the music rather than overpowering it. An instant classic.
Genius Of Russell Malone.......2002-12-02
To speak adequately of Malone and Heartstrings one would have to
elicit the use of a Webster's dictionary of superlatives. It's just that good and better. It will give you a tummy tickling experience. The emotions he evokes on each piece is so soulful and equally senstive as his fingers demonstrate. I find it difficult for me to single any one piece for review as they are all beyond superb. Definitely music to listen to with that significant other as it is mellow, soothing and laid back.

A UNIQUE SOUND WITH HEART!.......2006-03-19
I have thoroughly enjoyed this trio's background harmonies. Now,after listening closely to this CD with them doing their own thing I see it is where they Really shine!
Some of the tunes seem to be included before they were completed
in the studio and ready for actual release. That doesn't take
away from the body of work presented here-it has great emotional
feel. The trio had to be 18 or 19 at the time and you get an authentic youthful lovesick yearning put across with a truly
unusual harmony blend-soft and breathy with a minimum of music so
you can really hear the vocals. Sometimes the harmony is so close
and blended you can't pick out the separate parts. The lead vocalist sings with sincerity and heart and does some unusual
things-there is alot of freedom, experimenting and stretching
going on-and what a sound!
Most of the songs are ballads, but hey, that's what this group is all about.
LISTEN! BUY! ENJOY!
Without Kathy Young, well they're..........2006-03-02
Okay, I'm not bashing this group, but the cd is very low key. Nothing stands out at all, very (pardon the pun) monotone! It's great to see all the stuff on one cd as a collector, but without Kathy Young... well... just buy it and you be the judge.
Don't worry about the quality, it's clear and crisp from the master tapes with false starts and a great booklet.

Americana and Blues at its best! No Tag, No Tail Light is Jon's newest release. Produced by Dave Mattacks and Tom Dube, this CD was recorded in Boston, MA in the fall of 2002 and features the Jon Shain Trio with Dave Mattacks sitting in on drums.
Customer Reviews:
Quality production.......2006-01-08
Funny you should mention the perceived similarity with Steve Forbert, as I just saw him open for SF in Atlanta. I really like this album (which I bought at the show). Every song scores. Some of the adjectives which come to mind when I listen to it are fun, evocative, and finesse (OK, well thats a noun isn't it....maybe finesseful?). The guy really seems to enjoy playing, adding in little hooks and so on at a live show, complete with just-for-fun facial contortions when singing certain lines. Another thing I really like about this CD is the crisp production. The sound quality is great and really highlights his style of playing. All the plucks, picks and thumps come out of the speakers with a high degree of fidelity. This is good walking around the house on the weekend music or intermediate distance road trips. Definitely more than background, but not abrasive either. Just well-written tunes, skillfully executed and produced.
The Grandest Charade.......2004-01-28
The magazine "Dirty Linen" did a recent feature article on Jon Shain, which made me seek out his most recent CD. Dave Mattacks of Fairport Convention who lends crisp production values to Shain's sunny folk disposition as well as percussion & drums produced this set. Vocally, Shain's hushed, somewhat breathy delivery most often brings to mind Steve Forbert. "Worried Messenger" is a bright tune with FJ Ventre's throbbing bass line, "If I take it to the street, are they gonna take it straight to me?" "Getaway Car" has a bouncy guitar part with Shain's rolling melody, "Out of the daylight, out of control, just like Pancho Villa fresh out on parole." "Philly Girl" is a sweet folk boogie. Shain's slide guitar rattles & rolls on "Get What You Deserve." My favorite track is the boogie woogie "Ka-Ching Ka-Ching" about a money hungry girlfriend where Dave Mattacks goes crazy with cash register percussion, "There's dollar signs in my baby's eyes; she's burnin' through my money with her stories, games & lies." Shain resurrects with an old-timey reverence "Only the Blues," a 1928 track by the Hokum Brothers. "Whistle Blower" is a dark tune with bass & acoustic guitar and a vocal falsetto. The CD concludes with a Forbert-like vocal, "Now the shadows rise & surround you; time is the grandest charade." Shain is a developing artist whose new CD represents a great stride. While his melodies are not startlingly original, he's obviously having a lot of fun & has the ability to let us in on it. Explore & enjoy!

Heartstrings.......2000-05-22
I have just recently discovered Muriel Anderson through a CD entitled "Theme for Two Friends" which featured her friend Julie Adams, a cellist. This limited edition CD was absolutely beautiful, which led me to do more research on her music. I am impressed with her versatility which shines in the "Heartstrings" album. It is obvious she loves music and is able to express her passion and sensitivity through a various types of music. I am partial to the more melancholic themes, but it is all wonderful. This album album is refreshing! Thanks Muriel.
