Prokofiev: Ivan The Terrible

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
If more movie music were like Prokofiev's film scores, there wouldn't be nearly the objection to programming it that there is with the pretentious, derivative drivel typically produced by today's composers of background music. The score is given a powerful reading by Valery Gergiev, leading the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chorus of the Kirov Orchestra; this is very much a chorus work, and the Kirov finds the right blend of classical polish and folk raucousness. Mezzo-soprano Liubov Sokolova finds the essential Slavic mournfulness of Yefrosiniya's lullaby; Nikolai Putilin wields his rough-edged baritone like the axes of the Oprichniks' song. The libretto is of limited usefulness to the average Western listener, since it prints the Russian words in Cyrillic, rather than phonetically in Latin letters; and anyone who tries to cue up a section while relying on the libretto will quickly discover that the musical numbers and the CD cuts are not quite the same. --Sarah Bryan Miller

Album Description

PROKOFIEV: IVAN THE TERRIBLE "This studio account of Ivan ranks with the best of Gergiev's opera recordings. The Russian choir and some notably forward timpani help Gergiev to build the right atmosphere. The wide vibrato of his young mezzo is nothing if not authentic and there will be no complaint about the robust singing of Nikolai Putilin."--Gramophone Good CD Guide "Prokofiev's vividly colourful music for the Eisenstein film of Ivan the Terrible has never sounded quite so bitingly dramatic on disc as under Gergiev--as electrifying as any of his opera recordings with the Kirov Company." --The Penguin Guide to Compact Discs FEATURING: Liubov Sokolova, mezzo-soprano Nikolai Putilin, baritone Chorus of the Kirov Opera Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra Valery Gergiev, conductor

5 out of 5 stars Awesome account of Prokofiev.......2007-05-02

The labelling said that this is an oratorio work. Certainly it is dramatic even without any staging. The performance is full of drama, majesty, awe and passion, all in one go.
May be Russian music requires some one with the essential 'Soviet' background knowledge and upbringing to 'reactivate' the spirit and soul behind all the massive sounds.
Certainly Gergiev is the man best-suited to this job. His reading of the work is believably authentic, and deeply moving. At many places he simply makes the listener's hairs stand on their ends.
Even if you do not normally enjoy Russian music, this is a recording that you will raise your eyebrows, suggesting clearly to you what is the 'Russian spirit'!

5 out of 5 stars Ivan the Terrific!.......2007-04-04

This opera is definitely my "discovery of the year"!

I am NOT an opera lover, and actually the operas I like are very few. The first and foremost is uncontestably Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov. Prokofiev's "Ivan the Terrible" has climbed at once to the second place, very close to the first. Among other reasons, its because it is clearly influenced by Boris. The same stunning mixture of Romantic, folk and Orthodox-church musics gives it the very "Russian" flavour of Boris (but Ivan is, of course, more modern-styled).

Gergiev is the right man in the right place. He extracts the best of this work, emphasizes the dramatic elements (but does not exaggerate in that), and, above all - gives it very Russian and very majestic (the singers and orchestra are Russian, too). He touches upon the most minute sensitivities and at the seme time leads the orchestra, chorus and singers sweepingly. You can really sense his charisma through the sounds.

The recording is very good.

I recommend it warmly, even to people who don't like opera.

5 out of 5 stars A sonic blockbuster from a great Prokofiev conductor.......2007-01-31

Prokofiev wrote a lot of garish, at times nearly berserk music for Eisenstein's epic, unfinished trilogy, Ivan the Terrible. The project, begun in 1942, dragged on for years, and the composer lost both inspiration and his health, dying before his music could be shaped into concert form like the wildly successful cantata derived from Alexander Nevsky. The music for Ivan is boisterous, at times steely, lacking in the tragic element, but full of folk choruses and even a few moments of quiet mystical serenity in the midst of a lot of bombast.

To really bring it off you need Russians, and those Russians should be going hell-for-leather. Under Gergiev they do as never before. Despite the Dutch orchestra (which sounds Russian enough to fool the rest of us), the Kirov chorus brings the right Slavic energy, as do the two soloists and of course Gergiev himself. There are moments when you think he's the greatest conductor in the world, especially when sheer dramatic momentum is called for. This CD rises to the top of the list. For those who care about performance editions, this is the long oratorio arranged by Abram Stasevich, minus the (extensive) spoken narration.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ivan the Terrible is good.......2006-09-06

Around 1941, the film director Sergei Eisenstein began to plan a film about the life of Ivan IV of Russia ("Ivan the Terrible"). Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953), who had composed the score to Eisenstein's film, Alexander Nevsky, began to collaborate with Eisenstein on the project in 1942. Ivan the Terrible was initially to be a three part film. Part I was praised by the Soviet authorities, but Part II was banned due to its dubious depiction of Ivan (Stalin apparently thought of himself as a modern day Ivan). Subsequent to this, plans for Part III were abandoned.

There are multiple versions of Prokofiev's "Ivan" music floating around out there. The present release is a concert scenario crafted by Christopher Palmer. Prokofiev would have created his own concert version, except that the later part of Prokofiev's life was so turbulent. The best known version of the Ivan the Terrible music was published by Abram Stasevich (the conductor of film's soundtrack), who introduced a narrator to link the different movements together. The version on the present release, thankfully, eliminates the narration, which served to distract the listener from Prokofiev's music.

Prokofiev's score for Ivan, much like is score for Alexander Nevsky, is a blend of orchestral, orchestral plus choral, and aria-like movements. Similar to Alexander Nevsky, the music is riveting and dramatic. Things start off with a bang in the Overture (Track 1), beginning with a torrent of violin runs laying the foundation for the brass-heavy "Ivan" theme, which is heroic, yet contains an element of bombast with the inclusion of heavily accented tonicizations (a Prokofiev calling card). Another favorite is the Polonaise (Track 12) with its delightfully charming Prokofievian woodwind melody and beautiful central theme. Also notable is "The Storming of Kazan" movement (Track 9), with an overzealous tuba player depicting an approaching army. This movement does eventually settle down, and a lovely central theme is heard equal in melodiousness to anything out of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. The concluding battle music in this movement, featuring a wide array of percussion instruments and technically difficult orchestral writing is quite thrilling as well. I could go on, but suffice it to say fans of Prokofiev will find much to like in this music; although I do find the quicker sections more interesting than some of the slower movements.

The sound quality here is quite good and the Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus, under the direction of Neemi Jarvi (a great Prokofiev conductor), play marvelously. The program notes are sufficiently detailed and an English translation of the choral parts is included.

In conclusion, this version is a must-have for Prokofiev fans. Although, I would recommend that listeners first explore the slightly more tuneful Alexander Nevsky score, as well as Prokofiev's powerful "October" cantata before acquiring this release.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of Prokofiev's major works.......2007-06-25

I was introduced to the music of Prokofiev through his symphonies, and was immediately drawn in by the beauty of his music. So I bought this box set without listening to any other of his works first.

I was not disappointed in any way. Here, collected together very nicely, are a large portion of Prokofiev's works. Many of the performances here are reissues of past recordings, mostly from the '80s and early '90s. There are many imminent performers here, such as Mstislav Rostropovich (Prokofiev was a good friend and teacher of Rostropovich, and dedicated his Cello concerto to him after hearing him play), Seiji Ozawa, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and many other excellent musicians and orchestras. Rest assured that these are some of the best performances available of the works included.

The recording quality is unquestionable. Most of the performances are digital, clean, and rich (no distorted, thin, distant, or weak recordings here!). The only disc which contains poor recordings is the Archive Recordings disc, which is understandable as the recordings are very old (including Prokofiev playing or singing some of his own works and some works by other composers).

As for range of compositions included, we have here a magnificent collection of Prokofiev's most important music (and some of his rarer pieces as well): his entire symphonies and concertos, a selection of his instrumental music (including violin, flute, cello, and piano sonatas), many of his stage works including Romeo & Juliet, Alexander Nevsky, the Prodigal Son, The Steel Step, The Love for Three Oranges, Lieutenant Kije, etc., and an entire recording of his War and Peace opera.

One inclusion that I find somewhat baffling is that of 4 different versions of Peter and the Wolf: English, German, Spanish, and French. I would have been content with just the English, but I suppose listeners from other countries can benefit from the other languages.

I really can think of no better way to start a collection of Prokofiev's music. Here you can get his major works, and for a decent price (used copies can be a very good deal). If you are interested in the music of Prokofiev, or in 20th century classical music, this set is a great way to get a thorough introduction to Prokofiev. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A great gift for classical collectors.......2004-05-13

I think it's needless to say how famous are S. Prokofiev and his works. I just want to give some details about this collectible gem.

      This boxset has 5 parts:

-Sonatas box: Instrumental and chamber music. 5 CDs including sonatas for violin(s), sonatas for piano, piano and cello, piano and flute. Music for childen, and a quintet (G minor)
-Concertos box: 4 CDs. Including concertos for violin(no1 and 2), for piano, symphony-concerto for cello.
      -Symphonies box: 4 CDs from sym No1 to sym no7. no4: Op.47 and Op.112
-Stage works and Films scores: 6 CDs. Romeo and Juliet, Peter and the wolf, Alexander Nevsky, Scythian Suite, The Prodigal Son, Cinderella, The love for three oranges...
      -War and Peace opera: 4CDs
-Bonus: Role music. Including piano pieces.

There is no question about the quality:
      -Sound: 5 stars
      -Performers technique: 5 stars
      -Boxes and color: 5 stars
      -Price: $7/CD is acceptable.

Finally, I would like to use Sviatoslav Prokofiev's words: "This Anniversary boxset is a most impressive testimony to the interest my father's music arouse among artists, orchestras and audiences alike."

5 out of 5 stars Unbeatable bargain of undeniable quality.......2004-07-19

While I have high regard for Claudio Abbado's reading of "Alexander Nevsky," the "Scythian Suite" and "Lieutenant Kije" on one DG disc, this Double Forte 2-CD issue from EMI's Classics presents an unbeatable bargain and outstanding performances to boot. The only draw-back is that there is no translation (as per usual) but the track titles are in English and there are some notes on the performance.

Beginning with Ivan the Terrible, Boris Morgunov gives an exceedingly dramatic reading of the narrative. I've heard caveats issued as to his very poetic interpretation but I enjoyed it. Some Numbers combine both narrative and accompaniment. The Swan (i.e., No. 7 at track 8- the reprise) combines narrative with Irina Arkhipova's mesmerising vocals to add majesty to her graceful introduction of that theme earlier at No. 3 (i.e., track 4). Her performance in "Yefrosinia and Anastasia" again shows why she became a legend: warm, glowing tone and graceful delivery. "Ivan's Appeal to the Boyars" is both narrative and music, and the performance here is movingly desperate. Anatoly Mokrenko is the solid, firm baritone who gives a suitably robust rendition of "Feodor Basmanov's Song". Muti conducts at a slower pace than, say e.g., Gergiev, but there is no sense of lag. The Ambrosian Chorus follow his tempi with precision and they are very well harmonised. They also sing with the right 'slavic' idiom.

Alexander Nevsky, as I have said elsewhere (while reviewing the Abbado recording) is again very well conducted/played/sung under Previn/the LSO/LSC, with Abbado's reading being only more sensitive. A perfectly idiomatic reading with the excellent contribution of Anna Reynolds, who gives a haunting and tragic account of the maiden's lament in "The Field of the Dead". Of course I had to turn to Abbado and the great Elena Obraztsova in the DG recording for a translation. Nonetheless, my experience all the richer for having both (though not financially speaking). "Alexander's Entry into Pskov" is triumphantly done in the finale.

Rachmaninov's "The Bells" is a refreshing end to the intensity of the preceding works, though certainly a worthy composition/performance in its own right. It maps the phases of life from birth to death, using the bells as metaphors. This is another good performance and the style of Russian composition is more akin to Glazunov. The soloists and chorus sound more 'western' here but not so much as to detract from a good quality performance. The Lento (No. 2) is particularly beautiful and Sheila Armstrong's soft, sweet, melodious voice is used to good effect (lovely pianissimi). The other artists (tenor, Robert Tear and baritone, John Shirley-Quirk) also give excellent performances.

          A superb bargain.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording.......2003-09-14

This 2-CD ste is really good.
Especially, performance of "Ivan the Terrible" by Riccardo Muti and his PO is amazing...And narration of Boris Morgunov (still he recorded in three or more times with different performers!), solists and Ambrosian Chorus are very good. Ithink, this film music is one of the most beatiful musics by Prokofiev.Virtuosity of Philharmonia (London) Orchestra is very good.

Andre Previn's "Alexander Nevsky" performance is very impressive (especially 5th movement: The Battle on the Ice"). He recorded once again with Los Angeles PO (released on Telarc), but this is more good (and cheap!) than LaPO recording...

And "The Bells" of Rachmaninov is also great. This choral symphony is based on poems by Edgar Allan Poe...

This recording is very highly recommended...

4 out of 5 stars An eye-opening Prokofiev survey (try to buy it used).......2006-03-26

I can't see paying full price for a two-CD compensdium, even one as lavish as this package, when all the itmes are samples for promoting Universal's catalog (expect a good representation by Ashkenazy, Rostropovich, Previn, and Gergiev). But the selection is good enough and often rare eough to warrant a buy if the price is low.

As I listened straight through, I was surprised at how unacquainted I actually was with the wide extent of Prokofiev's style. From the very early "Dreams," which could be mistaken for Glazunov through the unfamiliar operas (Betrothal in a Monastery Garden, Semyon Kotko) to the final, sadly diminished works like the Seventh Sym. and the cello concerto, the composer covered every major Russian style of the century. I didn't find any new masterful performances--not that a short excerpt is a good enough trial--but everything here is well performced. Any listener should find something unexpected and intriguing in this two-and-a-half-hour traversal.

4 out of 5 stars Prokofiev: Film Scores 101.......2000-04-07

This two CD set contains highlights from Prokofiev's most popular Orchestral & Choral scores for Russian cinema. The recording quality is good, a lot of attention paid to dynamics and balance by Slatkin & The St. Louis Symphony / Chorus. This collection serves best as a low-cost overview of Prokofiev film scores, geared mainly towards an audience that wishes to gain a better understanding of the composer or Twentieth Century Russian Cantatas/Symphonies. The liner notes are highly informative, covering everything from the life of Prokofiev to the life of the characters portrayed in the music. As such, this is a great "educational" collection that covers some of the most dramatic, dark and thrilling symphonic music ever produced.
