This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price. The sound quality is decent, however it is not great. This set will not provide you with the crisp, clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection for a great price.......2007-06-27

I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars 20 Fabulous Discs.......2007-06-08

I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome violin Vanessa-Mae.......2007-07-21

I 'found' Vanessa-Mae a few years ago. I am so blown away by her unusual talent in classical violin. My all time favorite is Toccata and Fugue. As a classical music lover, this gives me goosebumps. I am wondering why I am not hearing her in this year-2007. It is as if she made these awesome tracks and then no media news about her. That to me is a shame, for we need more real artists, not these talentless pop stars in rehab! This CD is a charm, you will love it!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing...........2005-05-28

she is an Excelent and great violin player, her music is unique, if you love instrumental music, you can't miss it.

Album Description

This recording presents a selection of some of the least and the best known exponents of twentieth century Latin-American guitar repertoire, among them the internationally renowned Argentinian composer Máximo Diego Pujol, whose Elegy for the death of a tanguero is an elegant homage to his compatriot, the father of the classical tango, Astor Piazzolla. Leo Brouwer is found in unusually lyrical mood and two of Piazzolla's most popular songs are heard in an arrangement by Colombian-born guitarist Ricardo Cobo.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2006-02-05

What can I say? Every piece on this recording I love, and Ricardo plays them all to perfection. This CD is sure to get more play than most of my other CDs. If you like classical guitar check out all the Naxos label CDs, I own like 4-5 of them, and they are all excellent listening. This one I must say stands out to me, but mainly because of my preference for Latin guitar music.

5 out of 5 stars Sensuous and poetic playing with amazing technique.......2004-08-17

Although I'm honestly tired of all the "Latin collection" CDs out there, this one is played by a "real" Latin and you can hear it from the first track. It is not only believable, but compelling. The poetry in Reis's two pieces (Track 2,3) is simply beautiful and Cobo's phrasing is refreshingly provocative rather than safe. This player's music is fluid, his sound silky and detailed, and his musical thinking exciting and natural. Although I have several versions of Piazzolla on guitar, these arrangements totally rock. Cobo's arrangement of "El Choclo" is dazzling, especially the last variation. Without saying more, every track on this recording is really special. Take it from a serious student of guitar and avid listener- this CD is a must-have if you like guitar.

5 out of 5 stars An eclectic collection of guitar music, wonderfully played!.......2004-07-07

This is my favorite CD of Latin American guitar music. Ricardo Cobo is a Columbian guitarist currently living in Las Vegas and his playing is among the best I've heard. As the liner-notes indicate, this CD features some well-known Latin American composers as well as some who are virtually unknown. (Outside of the Cuban composer Leo Brouwer, all the composers whose music is featured on this CD are South American.)

The pieces by Manuel Pujol are particularly moving (his work in homage to Piazzolla is alone worth the price of the CD!), as are the two works by the little known composer, Dilermando Reis. Also worth mentioning is Leo Brouwer's piece 'Un Dia de Noviembre,' a beautiful modal ballad (in the natural minor 'Aeolian' mode) that sounds almost like 'new age music' but that is more interesting and subtle. I don't particularly care for the two pieces by Astor Piazzolla (the 1st and last tracks on the CD), as I don't think they fit well with the rest of the CD's music, but overall this CD has enough beautiful guitar music to warrant many listenings. Some of the slower pieces are reminiscent of the music of the brilliant Paraguayan guitarist/composer Agustin Barrios, whose music was neglected for too long but is now getting serious attention (I would recommend David Russell's recording of Barrios' music for solo guitar -- simply beautiful).

And with Naxos' extremely low prices, you really can't go wrong with Cobo's CD!

5 out of 5 stars Great guitar CD.......2003-12-18

I've been waiting for this CD to come out. It was worth the wait. The pieces are familiar Latin guitar music. The playing is the best I've ever heard on any Cobo recording. His Latin soul comes through in this recording. With his superior technique he gets an amazing sound out of the guitar. The richness of this music comes through more with each listening. Buy this CD! You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars If you like the tango or classical guitar, this is for you.......2003-12-15

I had looked forward to Cobo's release of this collection of Latin American guitar music. There are few players on the planet who can match his technique and sound (he won the prestigious Guitar Federation of America Competition in 1987), and fewer yet with such direct ties to Latin American music (he's a native of Colombia and has received that country's highest honors for accomplishment in the arts). The CD doesn't disappoint. Much of the music is familiar to guitarists, although not all from guitar renditions (Cobo has transcribed some popular tangos from piano or other mediums). Cobo's talent is apparent and consistent throughout. If you like the tango or similar music, and/or if you like to hear the classical guitar played well, you'll like this recording.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I can name that tune in three notes.......2005-02-19

My family likes to put this disc in on shuffle and play name that tune. I wish they made more discs like this, only with more obscure works.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Sampler.......2001-11-09

For the beginner. You will be surprised at how many of the 99 themes you recognize here. It is an easy introduction to classical music. Nice booklet too.

5 out of 5 stars Useful........1999-03-22

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

5 out of 5 stars SPRING, SUMMER, AUTUMN & WINTER-WHAT A RIDE.......2002-04-10

I WOULD CALL THIS A MASTERPIECE.
Vivaldi's THE COMPLETE FOUR SEASONS is a masterful and beautiful work of art.
1. Spring= light hearted and sweet combination of chill and warmth fill the air. He, Vivaldi, makes you think of holding hands, soft tender kisses and the gentle blowing of flowers in a vast yet tenderly beautiful field.
2. Summer= warm with a strong heart yet loving. Vivaldi makes use of the idea of a powerful thunderstorm in the form of music. During his summer, that is Vivaldi's, you get the urge to hike to some forrest and listen to the gentle water running down a creek. While in the forrest you get to experience the spectacle of a well orchestrated thunderstorm that only Mother Nature can put on.
3. Autumn (I hate the word fall)= a time for celebrating and relaxation. You think of family gatherings, hot cider, pumpkins and the many hues of new colors blossoming around you. Vivaldi is like an painter; you feel as though he is re painting the world and his music is the paint.
4. Winter= chilled to the bone and yet warmth when you need it. Vivaldi is like "Old Man Winter"; the mood is right for being indoors with the ones you love. Outside, snow is all around, wind is gusting against the windows and ice is dangerous to walk on. But you manage to avoid all of this by relaxing by the fireside.
I purchased this cd because of Patrick Stewart. What I got out of it was a masterpiece in every sense of the word. This was already a great work of art; Patrick Stewart (aka Captain Jean-Luc Picard) just made it even better.
If you are a classic music fan get this cd. Light a few candles or start a fire in you fireplace, snuggle up to the one you love and make sure this cd is on.

4 out of 5 stars Patrick Stewart is AWESOME.......2001-10-18

This may seem like another recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, but it isn't. This version adds another element that Vivaldi included in his writing that few people apply today.

Vivaldi originally wrote poems to go along with each season, and Patrick Stewart reads the poetry here. He does a WONDERFUL job, putting expression and feeling into each poem.

Otherwise, this is not my favorite recording of the Four Seasons, but it still is pretty good. Stewart adds a wonderful element to the CD, which is the main reason I got it.

Also the CD art is different on my copy. It shows Arnie Roth and Patrick Stewart on the cover... I don't know I guess they changed it.

Wonderful version!

4 out of 5 stars Poetry reading makes this unique.......1999-08-25

Okay, so Arnie Roth is not the greatest violinist of our times, nor is this the greatest version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, BUT, Patrick Stewarts wonderful reading of Vivaldi's poetry written along with the concertos a unique and very pleasing addition to any classical library.

5 out of 5 stars Yum Yum Yum this is a delicious feast of relaxation.......1999-01-16

Put this CD on when you want to wander around your home or at work and be relaxed and refreshed. Better yet, put it on when and simply enjoy the poetry and music blended together. It's like air freshener for your head.

5 out of 5 stars Sparked by the Music.......2007-06-10

Mark O'Connor's "The American Seasons" is an ambitious work that is moving. From the buoyant and bubbly music that is "Spring" to the wistful and melancholy music that describes "Fall," the moods evoked are varied and gripping. As a performer, O'Connor startles us with both his verve and depth of feeling. The 14-minute "Winter" has a glorious string arrangement that swells and falls with O'Connor's violin leading the sonic storm. Closing my eyes, images flood my head sparked by the music from snow swirling to the feeling of entering the door of home and finding a hot cup of cocoa to warm the chill. O'Connor's collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma & Edgar Meyer on Appalachian Journey was excellent & had some of the same appeal. This disc was first published in 2001 & is well worth seeking. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful composition and performance.......2006-07-20

This piece, The American Seasons, by Mark O'Connor, is a beautiful composition. It blends folk, blues, jazz, and classical (and barlque) influences, with a tribute to Vivaldi's Four Seasons in the structure and the instrumentation, as is Mark's style. Many of the compositional techniaues, the counterpoint, are similar to those that Bach used. Each movement, to me, focuses on the seasons of the year AND the seasons of the life (I can just picture the leaves turning yellow during Fall, and the snow coming down in Winter). I especially like how the different themes throughout the composition are really similar--especially in Summer, the maturity theme is an ornamented version of the theme in the beginning of the movement, which is just a variation from something in the first movement. The improvized violin cadenza in the end is astonishing (one reviewer mentioned that only Mark would be able to play it, but Mark never writes his cadenzas out, so future performers would just improvize something else. In fact, if you look at the score on his website, there's nothing written there.)

The other two pieces, Strings and Threads and Applachian Waltz, are also very good in composition and execution, though not as great as the Seasons.

This is currently my favorite CD in my collection, and I highly recommend it to everyone regardless of whether you like classical, folk, jazz, or traditional music (although if you like jazz or blues you may like Mark O'Connor's Double Violin Concerto better).

    5 out of 5 stars O'Connor meets Vivaldi.......2003-10-21

The concept is Vivaldi's perhaps, but the composition and playing are uniquely O'Connor. Just as he took the concept of the caprices from Paganini in Midnight on the Water, Mark O'Connor demonstrates here his ability to borrow from others to create something distinctly his own. I drove all the way from Tulsa to Dallas to watch a live performance of The American Seasons and I don't regret it for a minute. It was November of 2001, just two months after the tragedy of 9-11. Appropriately the American part of The American Seasons took on a whole new meaning to both the performers and their audiences.

This four-part concerto represents the four stages of life, and incorporates various musical genres that are uniquely American. The theme and variations in the first movement are almost as catchy as Beethoven's 5th, with an intertwining counter melody weaving in and out. The second movement, representing youth and early adulthood, starts off with a slow, bluesy theme. O'Connor said he envisioned a kid kicking a can down the street as this movement unfolds. I can see that. The third movement, Fall, represents adulthood and middle age. It's probably the weakest of the four movements, but then the excitement and energy of youth is fading away and the complexities of life that are encountered in this stage are reflected in the slow, wandering melody. The fourth movement revisits the theme of the first movement with added drama and dissonance. The idea, I gather, is that in old age we tend to reflect on our earlier years with more wisdom and hopefully a more discerning perspective.

The first suite is worth the price of the CD, but the Strings & Threads Suite is the icing on the cake. Here O'Connor runs through a series of short pieces offering an assortment of irish jigs and reels, waltzes, rags, and blues as the focus moves away from composition and features more pure fiddling.

Before I bought this CD I bought The Fiddle Concerto. While I felt that was a good effort, I feel that O'Connor found his stride with The American Seasons. It's destined to be considered one of the great concertos of the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars This man just goes from strength to strength........2001-10-13

In a relatively short period of time, I've managed to very nearly become a Mark O'Connor "compleatist," grabbing up virtually everything he's released on disc. This new release - "The American Seasons" - goes to the top of my O'Connor short list, along with "Heroes" (O'Connor fiddling duet-style with virtually all of the other greats of the instrument), "Fanfare for the Volunteer" (O'Connor's alternately thrilling, moving and heartfelt violin concerto of a few years back), "Midnight on the Water" (O'Connor as triple-threat Paganini, on violin, guitar and mandolin), and "Telluride Sessions" (in which O'Connor teamed up with Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas to form the Strength in Numbers group on the most essential "Newgrass" release ever produced).

This time around, it's "all strings, all the time," with the excellent Boston-based Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra providing the orchestra backdrop.

The title piece is a four-movement Concerto for Fiddle and Strings, representing the seasons of an American musical life (part O'Connor and part archetypal as he writes in the notes), with at least a sideways glance at Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" for the same instrumentation. But there's absolutely no risk of confusing O'Connor and Vivaldi in this work. Three of the four movements are each in two major sections, for a total of seven major themes meant to suggest the stages of life, along the lines of Shakespeare's "seven ages of man" from "As You Like It."

So much for the background. What is the work like? It's of course typical O'Connor in the sense of extending the reaches of the instrument, but yet new and different from his earlier Fiddle Concerto and "Fanfare for the Volunteer." Where those two works have their glances back at earlier musical eras (the romantic violin concerto era in the case of the Fiddle Concerto and the early 20th century of Copland, Hanson and Harris in the case of "Fanfare for the Volunteer"), this work is thoroughly grounded in more current musical idioms. Like all of O'Connor's major compositions, it is a high-wire balancing act of touchingly sweet lyricism and absolutely mind-bending pyrotechnics. The extended 4th movement cadenza is - as are so many of his solos - something that I think only he will be able to perform in the foreseeable future; it is that challenging. Listen carefully to this cadenza, particularly its closing measures, in which he achieves some spiccato ("bouncing bow") effects using both fundamentals and harmonics. This is one of those "Do not attempt this at home" challenges which I can't imagine any concert violinist attempting anytime soon; it's downright scary in its difficulty.

The second major work of the album - "Strings & Threads" - is O'Connor's "take" on the history of American vernacular fiddling in a 13-movement suite of brief reflections on styles, covering Scots-Irish fiddling from the pre-Revolutionary days through blues, ragtime, Texas-style "flat" fiddling, swing, into the present era. It should come as no surprise to anyone who has listened to his "Heroes" album that he has every one of these styles nailed.

The concluding work is an arrangement for string orchestra of his deservedly famous "Appalachia Waltz" (of the Yo-Yo Ma/Edgar Meyer/Mark O'Connor album of the same name). It was this album which first brought O'Connor to my own attention. Here, he and Edgar Meyer have arranged this famous work for string orchestra, and the Metamorphosen perform it with the achingly lyrical beauty that it deserves.

The recording - made in the warm and intimate acoustic of Mechanics Hall in Worcester, MA (which served as the architectural model for Symphony Hall in Boston) - is a model of clarity and presence. Sony has captured the sound of O'Connor and the Metamorphosen perfectly.

Too bad about that 5-star limitation, though. I really wish I could have given Mark at least a few more.

    4 out of 5 stars Appalachian/Classical Crossover.......2001-10-12

Mark O'Connor is featured as fiddler, violinist, and composer on this Sony CD of his own works, The American Seasons. O'Connor may be best known to audiences from his performances with YoYo Ma and Edgar Meyer on the Appalachian Journey and Heartland CDs. American Seasons offers more of the same--a hearty dose of folk music--fiddle tunes from the American South, Blues, Texas Swing and more translated through postmodern ears. It's as if Igor Stravinsky had used Appalachian folk tunes as the basis for his Pulcinella suite, and flavored it all with touches of Vivaldi, Philip Glass, Bartok and even Yanni. As such, the music is wildly vibrant, rhythmically energetic, filled with the idioms of folk music but using the structures of the classical world. It has occasional mild harmonic dissonances but is always melodic and often completely diatonic. At their best, O'Connor's compositions sparkle with life, at their worst the frequent repetition of notes, rhythms and melodic formulas is annoyingly tedious. Compare, for example, the first and last movements of The American Seasons and you will find they are hardly distinguishable. The same melodic figure is treated obsessively to seemingly unending repetition, over and over, repeatedly, time and again. The liner notes tell us "The more you hear The American Seasons, the more you realize that it's built on a mere handful of motifs, and that O'Connor is learning the parsimonious cunning of a master." True, but when Berlioz or Beethoven do this, the transformations of those motifs fascinate us instead of driving us to distraction. Development is not O'Connor's compositional strength.

But although O'Connor isn't yet a great composer, he is certainly a great performer. His training is far from classical--he's a U.S. fiddle champion whose roots lie in the folk music traditions of Texas and the American South, with further training from jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli. But he's managed to incorporate the classical violin sound into his playing, smoothing out the roughness of the traditional fiddle sound. O'Connor doesn't attain the lushness of a violinist like Gidon Kremer, but then he doesn't strive for that, and his unique tone quality and virtuostic technique are enviable.

More enjoyable than the titular concerto are the two other works on the CD, the Strings and Threads Suite and the Appalachia Waltz. Strings and Threads is a collection of thirteen short movements written in the styles of various fiddle traditions. It's a wonderfully tuneful piece without the pretentions and consequent miscues of The American Seasons, and totally delightful. Finally, the gentle and quietly elegant Appalachia Waltz is reminiscent of Aaron Copland at his best.
