Urban Cabaret

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
An evocative series of cabaret songs by the notorious Viennese modernist Schoenberg and the celebrated theatrical team of Hans Eisler and Bertolt Brecht. The disc is titled Urban Cabaret, signifying, of course, the incipient terror of 1920s and 1930s Berlin that lurked behind the genre's decadent camp; but the soprano, Maria Tegzes, is never heavy-handed. These wry and felt performances illustrate both the playful levity of Schoenberg's music--usually ignored--and Eisler's careful artistry. --Joshua Cody

Give Toronto lounge lizard Jaymz Bee credit for brazenly weathering the lack of mainstream interest in elevator music. Who else but the silver-haired chameleon would have thought of recording a set of lounge versions of contemporary hip-hop hits? Sub Urban is as ridiculous as it sounds, but its grin factor sticks around surprisingly long. Bee and his cast of leisure suit-wearing clowns (including cabaret crooner Patricia O'Callahan, Big Rude Jake, and friend-to-the-stars Gino Empry) coast through jeep classics like Snoop Dogg's "Gin & Juice" and Outkast's "Miss Jackson." The real catch is Dave Howard's interesting arrangements, which turn Shaggy's "It Wasn't Me" into a swinging film noir jazz tune, riddle "Who Let the Dogs Out" with tubas and honking clarinets, and recast Wu-Tang Clan's "Gravel Pit" into an aerobics workout song. Sub Urban also has the unintentionally hilarious effect of showing just how insipid the showboating and lyrics to songs like J-Lo's "Love Don't Cost a Thing" are when they're stripped of their high-gloss production. --Matt Galloway

this cd and it's follow-up volume comprise an abbreviated history of atlantic records love affair with the vocal artist.

from the down-and dirty, st.louis woman by boyd raeburn and hi orchestra with ginnie powell and nobody knows you when you're down and out by the incredible lavern baker, to the sophisticated and soulful, i hadn't anyone till you by earl coleman, the listener is treated to masterful vocal performances and unparrelled orchestrations.

timeless in it's appeal, listenable as art, invaluable as history. this smattering of atlantic's huge talent stable is a delight to the novice or afficianado. each cut is a treasure.
