During her far-too-brief career, cellist Jacqueline du Pré exhibited an almost oracular power of communication. Her performances bristled with the kind of brilliant electricity that could change lives and convert listeners to a lifelong love of music. Happily, it's possible to experience a sense of that power from the recordings du Pré completed before multiple sclerosis halted her career as a performer in the early 1970s. This set provides a splendid portrait--at bargain price--of du Pré's unmistakable personality: the astonishingly original yet convincing phrasing, raw energy, and ability to make her instrument sound uncannily like a human voice (du Pré was after all a favored student of Mstislav Rostropovich). Her rendition of Haydn's Concerto in C is clearly cast in a romantic--and nowadays perhaps unfashionable--mold, yet du Pré's big, bold tone carries the musical line forward with exhilarating presence. It's a demeanor that proves especially reassuring for the quirkily mercurial inventions of Boccherini. Yet du Pré most indelibly leaves her signature on the work that became her hallmark, Edward Elgar's E Minor Concerto, grafting a deeply personal level of expression onto the score's rich post-World War I melancholy. In the Schumann, du Pré makes an eloquently passionate protagonist. A similar sense of excitement is to be heard in Dvorák's Concerto--performed near the end of her career--above all in the flame of inspiration she evidently sparks from the orchestra in the serene close of its slow movement. Jacquline du Pres interprettation of some of the moast famous cello consertos is simply amasing. her music just flows with energy and abbowe all passion. she realy brings out the qaleties of the cello with intensety and softnes intertwined. music bursting with passion.

UNTIL I was fortunate enough to have heard them performed by Jacqueline du Pre!!!
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! Her superb playing, along with truly masterful
interpretative skills, just "comes pouring out of the speakers!"
Also, the orchestras were obviously truly inspired by these opportunities to perform and record with one of the greatest musicians of all time.
The sound quality is excellent, as is the separation and clarity of both the soloist's and orchestral performances. The overall dynanism is also top notch - I found I had to lower the volume substantially from my normal
system loudness levels.
I've enjoyed this set so much I'll probably wind up buying everything from Amazon that EMI has produced with Jacqueline du Pre's name on it!

The choice of concertos is excellent and the artistry of Jacqueline du Pre is exceptional. The Schumann and Saint-Saens works are truly beautiful.
The album is a fitting tribute to the tragic loss of an incredible young talent.

I love this CD. It came extremely fast to NZ and a bonus too as I was expecting only one cd not three!
While Dvorak is currently my favourite, other composers featured here have been growing on me.
Never been a Cello devotee in the past, but I am enjoying this new phase of my musical listening.
The late Ms du Pre plays with vigor and assertiveness, yet manages to convey those moving and sublime moments when needed.

At the ripe old age of 19 Mozart wrote five violin concertos, and they represent his coming of age as a composer of orchestral music. From here on, it's basically one masterpiece after another. Though not difficult works, technically speaking, they partake in full measure of Mozart's uniquely sensual brand of melody. That means that successful performances must know how to spin out a singing musical line, while at the same time making the most of the rare opportunities for soloistic display. Taste and musicianship are more important qualities than virtuosity, and that makes these pieces ideal vehicles for Arthur Grumiaux's aristocratic temperament and technical polish. --David Hurwitz

Perfect ? almost.......2007-06-08
I am happy to agree that Grumiaux was the best interpreter of Mozart's violin works, assured, fluent, magic flowed from his bow. And I agree that this Philips Duo is a great bargain, packed with great music. I do, however have one little reservation, while the sound quality of the violin is good, I find the sound of the orchestra rather muddy, especially during the louder periods; perhaps this is acceptable when the age of the recording is taken into account. But can you tell the scoring with any confidence? flutes ? oboes ? horns ? ( The sound quality of K 261 and K 373, with the New Philhamonia, is a little better)
Even with this reservation, I still give it 5 stars.
PS I have recently purchased a new re-release of Grumiaux playing the Beethoven violin concerto, the sound is much better than in these CDs, perhaps a more recent digital remastering of the violin concertos would result in more acceptable sound quality.
Excellent. Must-have set........2006-07-21
This is an excellent set put out by Philips in it's renowned Duo cd class. Almost all of Mozart's violin works are here. Arthur Grumiaux, one of my favorites, does a superb job of interpreting Mozart's works. This last weekend I played the same works by Heifitz and the comparison makes for interesting listening. I can't say one is better than the other, specially since I have no formal training in music, but each artist definitely leaves an impression.
Excellent set and a superb value but most importantly makes a valuable addition to anyone's collection.

This is a very good compilation of Mozart Violin Concertos and with a very good Orchestra. I did not put 5 stars because I had some of Mozart concertos played by H.Heifetz and other by Xue-Wei that I consider are more brilliant violinsts. Grumiaux is very good but not excelent.
Honesty and musical integrity!.......2005-05-16
The artistic personality of Artur Grumiaux was undoubtedly very sober. In comparision with the warmth of a David Oistrakh or the powerful musculature of Heifetz, his golden and flawless intonation was if I may, unique. His sonority and style did not belong to bravura style. He was an accurate and impressive violinist. His Mozart is crystalline and innocent. Once more, his presence in various performances in Prades Festival transformed and even improved his spelling touch. As you know all the artists who participated in this unequal Festival acquired a giant dimension. It is not by mere hazard that names of the height of Joseph Szigeti, Eugene Istomin, Rudolf Serkin, Sandor Vegh, Isaac Stern, William Kapell, Clara Haskill - above their innate skills - experienced Casals' spell. And because of this experience there was an immediate rapport with Clara Haskill and recorded one of the most incredible sets of Mozart `s Sonatas for violin that I' have heard ever.
And, despite his brief existence 1921-1986 his name will be resounding in the world of the violin during years and years. His honesty and integrity , technique and musicianship, self possession and aristocratic feature confer a special honor place. Go and get all what you can about Mozart, Faure Sonatas, his Haendel sonatas for violin, his Debussy Sonata, Guilleme Lekeu, Paganini 4th, and his version of Franck's sonata for violin is one of the most lyrical ever recorded.
An unforgettable artist!
Grumiaux at his finest.......2005-04-11
Yet another Philips Mozart DUO that is at the top of the class. Having the legendary Arthur Grumiaux on so many of these Mozart violin collections makes them easy choices. His elegant, refined style and lucious tone (from an amazing 1744 Guanari) were born for Mozart. Just about every major reviewer (Penguin, Gramophone, etc) lists this particular CD in the top two best picks for Mozart's violin concertos, often citing Grumaiux's style as the ideal model for Mozart. The recording sound is exceptional too as is typical for most Philips discs. A superb choice for the violin concertos! Anne-Sofie Mutter and Pamela Frank (amongst many) have also recorded some fine performances of these works along with a rather unique version from Baroque specialist, Fabio Biondi (Virgin).
An alternative choice would be the intruiguing 5-CD collector's set of Grumiaux's Historic Philips Recordings from 1953-1962 which has these five concertos plus many and some rarer works from Paganini, Mendelssohn, Faure, Ravel, Debussy, Granados, Sarasate and others. 4/5 discs are in mono but the sound is fine really. If you admire this Belgian legend, then this historic set would probably be very special as it shows Grumiaux at his finest in a beautiful and diverse repertoire.

Heavenly........2003-09-20
That is how I describe Maurice Andre's sound. So smooth and suave, and accurate every time. The Michael Haydn Concerto In D is one of the most impressive trumpet works ever recorded. Andre does it better than anyone else ever did, if you ask me. He also takes on J.S. Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2" and the results are majestic. The essential Joseph Haydn Trumpet Concerto is on here as well, a piece in which Andre plays an especially stunning cadenza on the first movement. The Telemann, Tartini, Handel, Vivaldi and Marcello are all impeccably played. Maurice Andre was the second or third trumpet player I started listening to after Miles Davis. I also discovered Clifford Brown around then, back in 6th grade. Since then, they have all remained in my list of all-time favorite trumpet players and musicians.
A must have album!.......2001-09-17
The incredible playing of Maurice Andre fills up all two of these cds. From the incredible brandenberg reading to the Cimarosa. This album from start to finish is a text book on beauty, style, phrasing, and how to play the trumpet. Andre is a true master of the trumpet and even more a true master musician.
Pyrotechnics.......2001-06-21
Maurice André is one of those people whom one suspects isn't quite human like the rest of us (Michala Petri is another). To anyone who has ever struggled to get as much as a parp or a toot out of a trumpet, the astounding technical facility and the pure, clear, pitch-perfect sound and wonderful tone of an André is a revelation that some people are indeed more equal than others. This collection represents André in his prime (he's now sadly semi-retired) and he does a wonderful job. Many of these works are not originally for trumpet, and only a modern piccolo valved trumpet allows them to be played. Nevertheless, they come up shining.
A must for the trumpet player's library!.......1999-09-23
If you're into trumpet concertos, Maurice Andre is as smooth and technical as they come. This two-CD set contains not only Bach, but also Handel, Telemann, Haydn, Albinoni, and others. If you have Andre's concertos in your sheet music library, these CD's make for great accompaniment. The CDs are great while studying as well. Mega cerebral (when you're into that kind of thing)!

Virtuosic Trumpet: Baroque And Classical Showcase.......2004-02-22
This album is an incredible showcase for the trumpet and the orchestra, in other words, the trumpet concerto. Hakan Hardenberger, the featured trumpet player, is highly talented and at the top of his game. Even the great jazz and classical trumpeter Winston Marsalis does'nt seem to reach the flights of fancy on the trumpet as does Hakan Hardenberger. Hardenberger masters the trumpet to perfection, capturing every nuance and every tone, from fortissimo fanfares to the softest pianissimo. On this compilation are the trumpet concerti of Baroque and Classical Era composers, among them Corelli and Albinoni and the Classical masters Franz Joseph Haydn and Leopold Mozart, Mozart's father. The sheer scale and magnetism of this music cannot be neglected. It is the greatest gathering of trumpet concerti ever made. The trumpet was perhaps the most fascinating instrument for Baroque composers. The trumpet produces grand, triumphant tones when played forte. It was an instrument that was displayed in ceremonial pomp- weddings, coronations and marches. The Baroque composers were sponsored by kings so they were expected to compose music for trumpet, which could be expressive not only as a fanfare for the king himself, but as an instrument of many dynamics. It can be played softly and slowly, which seems to create a nocturnal, reflective mood and staccato and fast-paced which made the music sound exciting and lively. In my opinion, it was the premier instrument of the Baroque Age.
The cd opens with the Trumpet Concerto In E Flat Major by Johann Hummel. This colorful piece is particularily impressive as it really explores the dynamic potential for the trumpet. It's third movement, the Rondo, is very exciting music, as it is played very fast and in a bouncy, dance-like manner. The Trumpet Concerto by Stamitz, Hertel and Richter are very stylish and must have been highly admired in the Baroque Era. The Trumpet concerto in E by Franz Joseph Haydn, who influenced Mozart, is beautiful, especially in its serenade-style andante second movement. In the last cd, Leopold Mozart's trumpet concerto is featured, and it's a good work. Perhaps his son Mozart greatly admired it, though Mozart did'nt really expand on trumpet concerti himself nor really ever showcased the instrument greatly. There are trumpet arrangements for the famous Albinoni Adagio in G, which on this version, sounds chilling, dark and dramatic. The cd concludes with trumpet versions of Bach's Organ Preludes and the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria.
superb playing.......2003-10-30
Hardenberger is indeed an extraordinary. The playing is right up there with the best of them. One thing unique to hardnberger is his ability to lock in ever note of every passage reguardless of register, speed, etc. In addition he playes with great character. The only reason i give hims less than 5 stars is because his lyricism, the most important thing, is surpassed by Maurice Andre and Phil Smith without questiong. especially after seing all of them live and buying their CDs. He is definitely among the greatests ever.
The Best Trumpeter in the Business.......2003-05-25
It's a rare treat for a reviewer when he can throw caution to the winds and go out on a limb for a musician. This is such an occasion for me. Hakan Hardenberger is a phenomenon. I think he is the Babe Ruth, the Wayne Gretzky, the Michael Jordan, the Vladimir Horowitz, the Jascha Heifetz of trumpet players.
Hardenberger is a Swedish trumpeter who made his first recording (Haydn, Hummel, Hertel, and Stamitz trumpet concertos, with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under Neville Marriner, on Philips) in 1986 when he was only 25 years old (in the cover photo of the original CD he looks like a boy). The first time I played this debut CD of his, my jaw dropped and I could hardly believe my ears. His playing was a revelation--absolutely stunning. I'd never heard trumpet playing to compare with it. In my opinion, with his first two CDs young Hardenberger not only moved into the top rank of trumpeters; he swept right past his competitors to the head of the class. I've compared a number of his baroque concerto performances, here and elsewhere, with those of other famous trumpeters, and he always comes out on top. I believe him to be in a league of his own. He has everything: virtuosity and technique to burn, dead-on intonation, clean trills, smooth legato, expressive shading, beauty of tone, brilliant high notes, enormous dynamic range. He is also a sound musician, with taste and a sense of style. His arsenal is complete and unassailable; there is no chink in his armor.
Everything that was on that debut CD is now in this Philips Duo set, which is a much better value, because it offers two generously filled CDs--72:55 and 78:27--for the price of one, adding most of the contents of two later Hardenberger CDs of baroque music for trumpet (the recordings here were made from 1986 through 1993). It's a good buy, and if you're going to own only one collection of baroque trumpet music, this is the one I'd recommend.
The trumpet has always been a difficult instrument to record and reproduce accurately. Here, although the consistently excellent digital recording presents Hardenberger very much front and center, it captures the timbre, "bite," and wide dynamic range of his trumpet with exemplary vividness and fidelity. On a top-quality playback system, he sounds like he's standing right between the speakers playing for you. And what playing it is! Not to be missed.
Hardenberger's second CD, of Telemann Trumpet Concertos, also accompanied by the ASMF, this time under Iona Brown, was recorded in 1987 (again on Philips). It too is marvelous, fully as impressive as his first CD, but unfortunately none of it is included in the Philips Duo reviewed here, so you have to acquire it separately. It's well worth it.

You don't have to be a fan of the instrument in order to appreciate and become overwhelmed by the beauty, the splendor and acrobatics of the trumpet. In the Baroque era, it was a instrument for the royal treatment and heralded arrival of kings and war. The performances here are excellent- Hardenberger, I Musici and Neville Marriner and his orchestra deliver virtuosic renditions of Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in E flat, Hummel's, Hertel's, Molter's and Albinoni's concerti, as well as incredible arrangements of Ave Maria by Bach and Albinoni's Adagio.
A non-trumpet player's view..........2001-02-12
Although I love classical music and have done so for a long time, I must confess that I am not a trumpet player. With that said, I must say that these two CDs are wonderful. My first recording of the Hummel and the Haydn concertos was the second Marsalis/Leppard/ECO recording on Sony Classical (titled Wynton Marsalis - The London Concert). Inexperienced with trumpet recordings at the time, I really treasured the CD. After all, a big name artist known for his virtuosity was performing the technically demanding concertos. What more could you ask for? After a while, though, I began to feel that Marsalis didn't really do it for me in these works. Sure, he played with a flair (and what a flair it was), but he lacked the focused, rich tone that I've come to associate with great trumpet players (Herseth comes to mind here).
The current reviewed recording, on the other hand, is quite a piece of gem. Even though I have never heard of Hardenberger before (you trumpet players out there please excuse my ignorance), he delivers precisely what I am looking for. Hardenberger has the centered tone that most trumpeters would envy, yet he lacked none of the technical virtuosity needed for the music. His vibrato is light and very classical (as opposed to the wider jazz vibrato). On top of all that, he shows much understanding and affinity for the various works on these two CDs.
All of this for the price of 1 CD. An excellent introduction to the core trumpet repertoire.

Bartók did not live to finish his Viola Concerto, and Tibor Serly's completion from Bartók's sketches hasn't satisfied anyone except violists hungry for repertoire. This disc offers the Serly version and a new completion by the composer's son Peter and violist Paul Neubauer. Neither edition ranks among Bartók's masterpieces, although the new version seems a bit more convincing. The most striking element about this disc is the thrillingly dark tone and passionate playing of Xiao, a superb Chinese musician who now teaches in Michigan. Janós Kovacs and the orchestra also sound splendid. The Serly piece is just a brief suite of transcriptions from Bartók's For Children, but Bartók's Two Pictures is marvellous music. --Leslie Gerber

If you compare the Bartok Viola Concerto with other candidates in the same league such as Schubert No 8 , Bruckner No 9 or most famous of all, the Mozart Requiem, then it clearly doesn't quite make it. The Concerto for Orchestra and even the third Piano Concerto are better pieces. This is well played, however, and I will let the musicologists argue about which version is better.

I am really not concerned about the controversy surrounding the Bartok viola concerto. It is simply a splendid work, with many passages marked undeniably with Bartok's stamp. (Don't listen to the editorial reviewer; it's a great piece!) It is wonderful to have both the Serly and the Peter Bartok/Paul Neubauer versions together for comparison. If anything, I like the newer version better: it has many felicitous examples of orchestration and adds fewer embellishments to the original Bartok sketches. Of course, had Bartok lived, he might have added more to his concerto (for instance, the slow movement as it stands seems rather brief - though I think it works just fine). But perhaps it is better simply to stick with what Bartok wrote and leave it at that. The performances are ideal: the violist's tone is firm and rich throughout, and the orchestra provides supple dialogue with the soloist. My only complaint is that the last movement could have gone a bit faster (when I played it in my college orchestra, the soloist really went like a whirlwind). Were they perhaps worried that this movement too would sound too short? But no matter. Naxos continues to astound with its fine issues at extraordinarily low prices. I encourage music lovers to grab the best Naxos CD's (including this one) with avidity.

Great Performances.......2004-03-06
This disc contains excellent recordings of
"Two Pictures" and the "Viola Concerto".
I definitely prefer the version with Tibor Serly's orchestration.
Though this concerto is not in the same league as Bartok's two brilliant violin concertos, I'd say the finale qualifies as a masterpiece.
Bartok was dying when he composed the "Viola Concerto". It sounds as if his spirit were being called home to Transylvania.
2 versions of unfinished concerto performed together........1998-10-04
The viola concerto, unfinished at Bartók's death, was completed by violist/composer/conductor Tibor Serly in the version familiar to listeners. Critics and musicologists have frequently criticized Serly's version, and Bartók's son supervised a new completion of the concerto, published in 1995. The casual listener will hear little difference in the 2 versions performed together here by Hong-Mei Xiao, though aficionados will enjoy the chance to compare them (Bartók's final version surely would have been better than either). Her tone is bright and violin-like, lacking some of the mellow darkness of Lars Anders Tomter's performance of the Walton "Viola Concerto" on Naxos 8.553402. She performs with virtuosity, and the Hungarian orchestra is steeped in Bartók's idiom. His "Two Pictures" are early works, showing promise, but not up to the standards of his mature orchestral masterpieces. Serly's own "Rhapsody," composed while he was revising the concerto, is a harmless virtuoso showpiece, reminiscent of Georges Enescu. As always, Naxos provides a full disc of well-recorded, polished performances by lesser-known musicians at an bargain price.

Georg Philipp Telemann's string concertos position themselves somewhere between the polyphonic complexity of the Bach orchestral sinfonias, the urbanity of Handel's concerti grossi, and Vivaldi's innumerable and endlessly delightful works of this type. But his approach always remained the most international as well as the most local. Two of these concertos, for example, exemplify the "Polish" style appropriate for the Electors of Saxony (Telemann's employers, who were also kings of Poland), with their folky rhythms and groaning bass parts. Telemann offers a bit of the French style galant here or Italian theatricality there--he's labeled one of the movements "Arlechinoso"--as the mood and moment suit him. Reinhard Goebel and the Musica Antiqua Köln dress these motleys with typical panache, a liveliness that argues once again for the validity of the period-instruments approach. One can well imagine Telemann hearing his music performed this way and nodding in approval. What the players have brought to Johann David Heinichen and some of the Baroque composers of the Baltic states serves them perfectly here: the conviction that while not all 18th-century music may match Bach's profundity, much of it nevertheless shows us a very good time. Give Me that Good Ol' Baroque.......2006-02-26
Another bizarre and quirky performance by the people who play most things just too fast and others with stylized bad musicianship - the 'anything to be new and different crowd.' Where are they getting these ideas from? Not from any history I've ever read. The first movement of the G major viola concerto is a case in point with its annoying thud on the strong beats. The third movement is strangely rushed and the fourth is just plain too darn fast. Is this a new European thing? - everything very fast? And, though old instruments can be made to sound wonderful, the sound here is simply not good. While this group has produced a number of recordings over recent years (under various leaders) that are banal and rushed, they are now wandering into the weird and ungainly. Not my Baroque.

The playing on this CD is excellent and the recording quality is fine. Some of the pieces are less interesting in terms of their composition in my opinion however. The later pieces on this disc with a more prominent solo instrument are perhaps the best here. If you are exploring baroque era music and are looking to try out Telemann you might consider his fantasias for solo violin or some of his excellent cantatas as a better place to start. He wrote some good table music as well.

I have listened to the entire CD, and it was thoroughly enjoyable throughout every single track. I bought this CD especially for the viola concerto and double viola concerto. Florian Deuter performs these pieces in a unique and totally convincing manner. The articulations (especially fast movements) are completely opposite of what one might normally choose to do in an interpretation of a faster movement. In this rendition, the 16th notes (2nd movement) are decidedly played off the string (short) and the 8th notes are on (long). I would never have imagined liking it that way, but I totally did! The orchestral accompaniment always sounds great in tone, and the balance between the soloist and orchestra is always very good. This is my new favorite recording of the Telemann Concerto.

This is a delightful record. Telemann, one of the most prolific composers of all time, wrote music that is technically masterful, endlessly inventive, full of surprises, emotionally mercurial, and continuously engaging. In these five concertos, composed over two decades, the solo flutist is often joined by one or more soloists from the ranks of the orchestra, who, as in Telemann's day, are all fully equal to the task. This results in a wide variety of combinations and colors, illustrating Telemann's skill in displaying each instrument at its best, so as to "give the player joy, the listener pleasure," as he himself put it.
These performances certainly radiate infectious enjoyment. The concertos all follow the traditional form, alternating four slow and fast movements, but are infinitely diverse in tonality, texture, mood, and character. There are carefree, sprightly, playful, elegant dances, humorous imitation games, brilliant passage-work and cadenzas, startling chromaticisms, and deeply expressive melodies that beguile the ear and touch the heart. The first movement of the opening Concerto is so reminiscent of a Bach Arioso that one of the two composers must have "borrowed" it from the other. The playing is superb in a modified period-style: the pitch is normal; the sound wonderfully pure, but rich and full; tempi are designed to invite both virtuosity and leisurely enjoyment of musical and expressive details. Pahud uses a narrow, restrained vibrato that underlines the flawless beauty of his tone. The other players, all like him present or past principals of the Berlin Philharmonic, match him in the perfection of their intonation, phrasing, and ensemble. --Edith Eisler

A couple of years ago, I played this recording of these flute concertos so much that I feel I lived in this music. I took them everywhere with me and listened to them all the time for several months. They are very beautiful, lively and will definitely lift the listener's spirits. The three other reviewers, particuarly Matthew M. Yau, have written very good and complete reviews. My only addition is to particularly praise the combination of the flute and oboe d'amore in the Concerto in E (#13-16) and the Vivace (#16) in particular. It is unbelieveably beautiful! I am also extremely fond of the Concerto in D (#17-20) and the Andante of the Concerto in G (#1). The liner notes tell an interesting story of this movement's reconstruction/restoration.
Elegance and Charm, Not to Mention Beauty.......2006-06-13
I'll leave the musical analysis to others here, but this is one of the most charming and lovely flute recordings I've come across. Pahud has the right felicitous touch for this charming---there's no other word for it---music from the prolific G.P. Telemann. I've listened to it many times and never tire of it. Really. It's terrific.
Telemann Perfection.......2005-07-08
Every recording I've heard from the EMI catalogue featuring Pahud and whatever orchestra he's accompanying has been splendid. He must have a great sense about whom to team up with and when. I really have to hand it to him and to his agent. This recording is no exception. Sublime interchange between composer, orchestra and soloist! Maestro Vivaldi lives on mainly in the vaults of Venice churches, where you have to travel to to appreciate the true quality of his music...It truly reverberates only in those ancient, richly adorned tempples.
The CD builds, fresco by fresco.. Starting with the Adagio driven G Major Flute , then travelling rather quickly to the Vivace second movement. The entire CD tends to be a study in that sort of contrast, which is one of the reasons that no matter in what venue we are listening to Vivaldi, he always mangaes to keep us alert! He was one of the first composers to engage in that sort of dimminuendo,zzzzzzzzzzzz.
Quiet you down to the stage that you're ready to nod off and then set a fire cracker off near your right ear!
Maybe not that bad, but I think Beethoven got a lot of his ideas in contrasting modes from first Vivaldi, then Mozart. It's just my own little theory, and I'm definitely no music maven, so just chalk it up to UFO theory type conjecture.
Don't let any of that dissuade you from purchasing this CD, however. It's clear, distinct, exceptionally executed! I can't detect a flaw in the ointment! 5 stars, no debate!

Pahud makes a strong case, with two debut recordings.......2004-05-26
TELEMANN: FLUTE CONCERTOS is a rarely beautifully compilation. The five concertos for flute chosen for this recording illustrates exactly what suits the instrument best and accentuates the instrument's beauty. Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) not only wrote concertos for one flute or two, but also variously combined the flute with other concertante instruments, showing the virtuoso flute in a wide range of different roles.
The five pieces heard in this compilation were composed over a period of more than 20 years and fully demonstrate Telemann's engagement with the concerto genre. In each of the five works almost every member in the orchestras at Telemann's disposal was capable of taking solo parts. The beauty of sound springs forth from the combination with softer tone of instruments such as oboe d'amore, viola d'amore or violone, which enhance the flute's brilliance and crispness, while an often astonishing playfulness could develop in the high registers when Telemann introduced a second flute or a violin, as manifested obviously in the Concerto for Flute, Violin, Cello, Strings and Continuo in A from "Musique de Table I" (5-8).
Concerto for Flute, Strings and Continuo in G (1-4) is a first recording because the only manuscript copy of the parts was in an extremely poor condition that the piece was sadly considered unplayable (until 2000). The concerto was composed for oboe as well as for the transverse flute of the time. The andante movement is the most beautiful movement, so elegantly and stately executed. Pahud makes such a strong case for the first recording of this concerto.
Concerto for Flute, Violin, Cello, Strings and Continuo in A from "Musique de Table I" (5-8) is probably the most beautiful concerto in Musique de Table. The agility and swiftness of notes best suited the festive occasions for which Telemann composed in 1733. This might be the most well-known and most played piece out of this compilation. Even Handel himself performed some of the pieces and some of his own compositions (flute sonata and oboe sonata) show the inspiration of Telemann.
Concerto for Two Flutes, Violone, Strings and Continuo (9-12) is also a debut recording for the piece, with a deep, velvety tone of the violone that creates an impressive contrariety to the agility of the flutes, notably when the flutes and the violone play together in parallel for long stretches.
Concerto for Flute, Oboe d'amore, Viola d'amore, Strings and Continuo in E (13-16). The Largo in D minor forms a sharp contrast to the vivacious movements to Part 1 of Music de Table. In the Siciliano, the repeated theme and expression is achieved by repetition of three concertante instruments without the continuo.
Listen for the only concertos with a combination of flute and two other different solo instruments in the final piece of the compilation, Concerto for Flute, Strings and Continuo in D (17-20).
Overall high marks for the agility, flow, and swiftness of all the performances in this compilation.

Stunning, energetic performances!.......2007-06-19
Janine Jansen is one of the finest young classical violinists in the world today. Her performance of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor, is thrilling! While I may not have the musical pedigree to comment on every nuance of her performance, let me say, if you like classical music, you are going to really like this CD! I did, it's that simple. Energetic, passionate, romantic...emotion pours out of Ms. Jansen. While her tone is certainly beautiful and extraordinary, it is the "romance" in this CD that swept me away. She plays the violin dangerously and with abandon! She holds nothing back. In the end, it just works, and it does so really really well, in my opinion. The other selections by Bruch are also quite good and I enjoyed them as well, but it's the Mendelssohn that makes this CD one of my absolute favorites.

In this crowded field of recordings of Mendelssohn and Bruch's popular concertos, the way Jansen and Chailly decided to distinguish themselves is to take the extreme virtuosic approach to these works and at the same time allows their emotions to dictate in order to maximize the excitement. The Mendelssohn is like a freight train charging through the night rather than a mid summer night's frolic. I must admit that at times I was enthralled by some of the vituosic passages in the Mendelssohn's. But overall, there is no substance to the performance. Jansen's playing is uneven, exciting at times, and yet there are plenty of dull moments where she sounds sluggish and muddled. Orchestral accompliment is woefully lacking in details. Fortes are over-used and there's no elasticity in the sound. The performer and the conductor did not relish in the interplays between the violin and the orchestra, partly I think this has to do with placing the violin much closer to the microphone in order to make the violin stand out. The Bruch's concerto does not render itself as well to such approach taken by Jensen and Chailly and the result is a sophorific performance. I find my attention drifting after the openning passage of the work. I would recommend the Mendenssohn to listener interested in an virtuosic approach to this work. For the Bruch's, one should look else where.
The ONE for Mendelssohn conerto!.......2007-03-29
This is an absolutely stunning performance! Although I love Mendelssohn's violin concerto so much I hesitated buying this CD at once. I just had hard time finding the ONE recording for my taste believe or not. However this beautiful young lady impressed me way much more than I expected! Wonderful feeling, power, technique are there with a great tonality. Orchestra/Chally is superb, really a great work all together. I guess this will stop me from hunting for another great recording of the Mendelssohn for a while. By the way, Bruch concerto is also quiet nice (Kyung Hwa Chung's is still my favorite) and the viola romance is just so beautiful! It is hard to get disappointed with this recording so try it!

Simply AMAZING!!!.......2004-11-08
If Carl and Johann Stamitz were alive, they wouldn't believe how flawless and beautiful Sabine Meyer has played their songs in this CD. Concerto No.3 is just simply charming, with her own alterations and add-ins to make the original song, giving it an amusing and snazzy feel.
I have been playing clarinet for 4 years now, and currently I am working on all three of the movements in Concerto No.3. My clarinet teacher gave this CD a while back and I absolutely love it. There is nothing wrong with the song, but because Meyer adds many little tidbits of her own, it doesn't correspond in many places to the original score, making following along the music challenging. My clarinet teacher did say that she did overdo the added stuff to the music, and i always regarded it as her sticking her tounge out at the composers =P If you compare the original score with her score, you will definately enjoy hers much more.
As I continue to work on C no3, I may even decide myself to add some of what she has changed into my own score.
The Stamitzes would be proud of her recording, and if you buy this cd i garentee you will enjoy it and hopefully give it a wonderful review as I and the other two reviewers have done !
Nothing short of amazing.......2003-04-29
This is a must have album for any clarinetist or any music lover. What Sabine Meyer does with Stamitz is nothing short of amazing. She puts to shame anyone who attempts to play the Third Concerto. The others are equally as astounding. I highly recommend this one!
What an outstanding record!.......2001-04-05
This record proves that Sabine Meyer must be considered to be among the world's top clarinetists. Her performance on this new release of Clarinet Concertos by Johann and Carl Stamitz is simply amazing. Not only is her technique flawless, her sensible interpretation makes you feel the joy and sentimentality with which this music was composed and thought to be performed: Just listen to the second movement of Concerto No. 3 by Carl Stamitz and you will see what I mean. There can be no doubt that this CD is an absolute highlight in my collection and one of the real great recordings of this year!
