    Album Description

This is the third release from the British-based baroque chamber orchestra Fiori Musicali. The group plays on authentic instruments and has a 15-year history performing baroque music in England, often in beautiful historic homes. In its 21st season, Fiori Musicali has a strong presence in central England, a residency at the St. Ceciliatide International Festival of Music in London, and has toured abroad to the Early Music Festival in Madrid. Fiori Musicali offer music appreciation classes, and recently began a pilot project to establish an affiliated youth choir, Fiorosa.

The featured artist is well-known recorder virtuoso Pamela Thorby, along with the ensemble's principal members. They present an elegant program of Baroque chamber concertos from 18th-century Venice.

This release provides not so much a programme but rather a wordless aria illustrating a text, just as Vivaldi added poems to his masterpiece The Four Seasons. The solo parts are demanding technically and show dazzling displays of virtuosic writing.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2003-05-15

This is the most virtuosic & artistict recorder playing I've heard in a long time. Pamela Thorby's performance of the Vivaldi Concerti is absolutely top notch.

Her fast tempos are filled with excitement and flare. She has total control in all the technical passages. It is very seldom to hear virtuosic playing (of any instrument) combined with total artistry. Many times performers are virtuosic and flashy but lack artistry. Thorby has it both!!! I highly recommend this recording to everyone. Thorby has knocked M. Petri over and has taken her spot as my most favorite recorder player!

5 out of 5 stars Passionate, Delightful Recordings of Baroque Recorder Standards.......2006-10-15

In her second solo album, Pamela Thorby of the Palladian Ensemble provides a delightful, spirited performance of what have become classics of the baroque recorder canon (three concertos by Vivaldi, one suite of Telemann, and one by Giuseppe Sammartini), with accompaniment and continuo by the popular early music group Sonnerie.

Three of the five pieces on this recording are by Antonio Vivaldi. Based on recent scholarly interpretations of cryptic notations by the composer on one of the manuscripts, two of Vivaldi's three "flautino" concerti have been interpreted as transposed down a fourth for soprano recorder, with the third (RV 444)still played on the sopranino recorder. Here, Thorby follows this latest musicological scholarship by playing one "flautino" concerto (RV 443) on the soprano recorder and RV 444 on the sopranino. Vivaldi's C minor concerto (RV 441) is a brilliant reworking of his own violin concerto.

The recorder has a reputation as a simple instrument, but the music is as technically difficult as anything in the baroque. Thorby is a true virtuoso, and this recording is a must-have for baroque and early music enthusiasts.
