Dowland: Ayres
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Dowlands penchant for gloomy subjects was well-known his most representative piece is the pavane Lachrimae but this exceptionally rich and varied program also shows him at ease with humor, amorous dalliance, virile and extrovert dance music. This recording features the countertenor Gérard Lesne, who was last heard on Naïve's "O Solitude,"a collection of songs by Purcell.

Customer Reviews:
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

If you had to reduce your recordings of 16th-century instrumental music to only one disc (a horrendous thought!), you'd do very well to keep this one. Rarely is any recording of any repertoire so well conceived, programmed, and performed--and rarely is the music so consistently and incredibly beautiful. The age in which this music was created may have been infinitely different from ours, but we dearly need music with such sincerity and heart these days. Lutenist Julian Bream and his period-instrument ensemble draw us into an enchanting world of beautiful, sometimes heartbreaking melodies and lovely harmonies. Occasionally we hear a lively dance, and a few times we hear Robert Tear's plaintive tenor. But mostly it's the viols, Renaissance flute, cittern, and lute performing some of the finest examples of English Renaissance music we're ever likely to hear. --David Vernier

No one in Elizabethan England could write a tune like Dowland. This supreme melodist and lute player composed some of the most beloved and enduring songs of any age, and today Dowland remains one of the most exalted--and most recorded--composers of the late-16th and early 17th centuries. His songs with lute are among the finest and most harmonically innovative of the genre. Their subject is often some aspect of love, most likely focusing on sadness, longing, or death. The "First Book of Songs" is the least melancholy of his collections, and contains some of his most famous songs--such as "Now, O Now I Needs Must Part," "Come Again: Sweet Love Doth Now Invite," and "Come Away, Come Sweet Love." Rogers Covey-Crump's gentle, articulate, and gorgeous tenor is the perfect voice for these pieces, and lutenist Jakob Lindberg is an ideal partner. --David Vernier

Album Description
Dowland's penchant for gloomy subjects was well-known - his most representative piece is the pavane Lachrimae - but this exceptionally rich and varied program also shows him at ease with humor, amorous dalliance, virile and extrovert dance music. This recording features the countertenor Gérard Lesne, who was last heard on Naïve's "O Solitude,"a collection of songs by Purcell.

Customer Reviews:
Fine Art.......2003-12-03
I only have to briefly comment that the works of John Dowland are simply wonderful. This work is dressed with the rich, enjoyable and fine interpretation provided by The Deller Consort. I have it and recommend to everyone who appreciates lute music !
Fine collection of songs, well performed.......2002-08-07
First of all, this is an offset to the other "review" which is actually the rantings and ravings of a lunatic who thought she was posting a letter to some company where one might buy a perambulator.
Anyway, this CD has a sweet collection of Dowland songs, recorded in 1982. Paul Elliott and Mark Deller and Rosemary Hardy are all in fine voice.
PLEASE NOTE: The initial listing of recorded tracks is incorrect, the secondary listing is correct, beginning with track 1. "What if i never speed?"
unsatisfied customer.......2001-11-16
this review is a complaint about service with the hope of it reaching someone who actually cares about the standard of service you provide and the way a customer with a genuine complaint about your service is treated. My daughter is eight months pregnant and decided to buy her pram from your company so looked through your direct catalogue and found the one she liked it offered a free cosy toes and changing bag and the page in the catalogue also offered a ten pound money off voucher.Armed with MY credit card we telephoned and ordered the pram but when she came to give the code for the voucher she was told that she could only use it instore she tried to argue that her nearest store was forty miles away and this was why she was using the catalogue and why put the voucher in the catalogue in the first place if you cant use it but was curtly told that was the rules then that was followed up by the offer on the cosytoes and changing bag only being available instore also, even after this she still decided to go ahead with the purchase so after the girl geting some details wrong three times, gave my credit card number and was told to expect delivery in a few days. The following Monday not one but two prams were delivered to her and on phoning she discovered that two prams had also been debited to my credit card. After tolerating a really bad attitude from a member of staff she finally spoke to a supervisor who said she would look into it and phone her back which they didn't, she had to make several phone calls before someone told her that the second pram would be picked up the folowing Thursday and my credit card would be credited the same day. Well sure enough the pram was picked up and as a token a set of cosytoes and changing bag were given to my daughter unfortunately they did not match the pram but nevertheless we thought that was that oh no it wasn't,. Meawhile as my husbands birthday is approaching I decided as a surprise that we would have a few days away so found a location I liked and booked it using my credit card only to find the booking cancelled due to there not being enough credit on my card on phoning my company I found out that I had not had the money refunded from your company so my daughter gets back on the phone only to encounter someone called Tracey with a real attitude problem who felt it necessary to lay the blame on my daughter again she had to ask to speak to a superior who said she would look into it and phone her back again she didn't so my daughter phoned back this morning and was again told she would be called back before 2p.m.when this didn't happen she again called back only to be told that the person who was supposed to call her back didn't want to speak to her. Now you tell me is this the sort of treatment a customer should expect? Idon't think so not only has an 8 month pregnant woman had to be put through unecessary stress but had to put up with all sorts of abuse from staff and to crown it all I have lost a surprise birthday present for my husband through incompetence. Let us just wait and see what explanation this company comes up with for this. I eagerly await you reply either on this site or by direct Email. yours angrily LINDA CONNOR
