When you compose more than 100 symphonies, all of them good, it's only natural that the public will find ways to identify the ones they like the most. These symphonies with nicknames are not necessarily better than those without, but they do give an excellent overview of Haydn's unsurpassed achievement as a symphonist. From the early trilogy of "Morning, Noon, and Night" Symphonies (Nos. 6-8), which Haydn composed as a sort of sequel to Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons," right up to the last of them, the so-called "London" Symphony (No. 104), the history of Haydn's symphonies is the history of music in the Classical period.     The Vienna Philharmonic is one the world `s leading recording orchestras. Ever since his first recording of Beethoven `s 6th Symphony under Franz Schalk in 1928, work on studio has undoubtedly, taken up a considerable part its time.

    As I have stated the historical encounter among Mahler and Walter in 1901 configured one of the most fecund and fruitful musical contributions. This fortunate encounter late friendship not only enhanced and widened the vision, but besides nourished the artistic personality and vigorous vitality of this reminded master.

    And according this fact, Walter `s Mozart is so interesting and original; fresh and inventive. The serenity and cosmic dimension were always the main factors that enriched the score every time Walter decided to perform anyone of his works.

    Walter had always a special and not hidden predilection for Mahler `s Fourth. That ` s a powerful signal at the moment to consider Mozart `s sound under Walter 's baton. This is one of the most emblematic evidences after this brief introduction. Maybe the only conductor who always saw the enormous tonal richness under the score was the great Sandor Vegh.

    Most of conductors in the actuality seemed to disdain this aspect and prefer to concentrate themselves in the expansiveness or impregnate Mozart of Pre Beethovenian echoes. That may be result effective in a reduced number of works but it 's extremely risky and even mistakenly to pretend coloring Mozart `s musical texture under this perspective.

    His Schubert is pleasant to listen , but there are better options. In what Haydn concerns it' s a noble performance.

    Bruno Walter's Vienna Philharmonic recordings have always struck me as his finest achievements, showing him to have been a fiery, impulsive musician, much in the Weingartner/Furtwaengler mold. This CD is a good representation of Walter's abilities. The Schubert is very dark and ominous, the Haydn very spirited and fresh, while the Mozart "Prague" Symphony is probably the finest ever recorded, virile, heroic, weighty and yet volatile. The transfers are amazing in their clarity and impact.

      Looking for something that contains just about all of Franz Joseph Haydn's named symphonies? Look no further, you found it. Sadly, I don't own this box set (wish I did), but it's probably the best one that shows what Haydn's symphonies were about. What a talent this man had to write 104 symphonies, and have nearly 30 of them given nicknames (mostly of the nicknames were given by the general public at the time rather than the composer himself.) A perfect ensemble and conductor is picked: the Acaademy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields led by Sir Neville Marriner.
      Completely essential, except for one flaw. It's missing two named symphonies: No. 30 in C Major "Alleluia" and No. 64 in A Major "Tempora Mutantur". That shouldn't dissuade you from purchasing this excellent set. I've never heard how they're played by this orchestra. I've heard other orchestras play these symphonies, but not by ASMIF and Sir Neville Marriner. Take my advice and get this set. You're getting your money's worth.

      Wonderful and charming performance of the Haydn "name" symphonies. Because these are analogue re-mastered CDs there is a loss of richness and brightness which is a shame because the play is full of joy and vigor. Even so, it is a good value for the price and one soon becomes used to the "vinyl" sound.
