I think the most impressive thing about this CD is the respect given to each song. Most singers doing Presley often do him in parody for comic effect. Elvis himself, in concert, often sang his "hits" as though they were jokes. But not Lotti! Helmut shows the utmost respect as he does his fine renditions: well arranged, well orchestrated, well sung. And while Lotti has an uncanny ability to sound very much like Elvis, he is not imitating "the King." Oh, no! These songs are performed by Helmut in such a manner that they become Helmut's own songs through his brilliant interpretations. Of course, great as they are, Helmut does not expect his recordings to become replacements for the originals. They are just what the aptly-titled album says: "A Tribute".

There are basically three types of songs included on this CD. 1) Hits made famous by Elvis, ("Suspicious Minds", "Love Me Tender", "Return to Sender", "One Night" etc.); 2) Songs that were hits by others, but became "Elvis songs" simply because Presley sang them so distinctively and so often in his concerts, ("I Just Can't Help Believin'", "What Now My Love", "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" etc.); and 3) Two new songs written by Helmut Lotti himself and sung in Elvis's style, ("Thank You", "If You Were Mine"). (I think Elvis would have jumped at the chance to record Lotti's beautiful ballad "Thank You" if he had had the chance!)

Often the orchestrations are almost the same as on the Elvis recordings, but just as often they are fuller arrangements because of the large symphony orchestra that accompanies Helmut on many of these versions. Other songs are performed in stark, spare arrangements reflecting the originals intelligently.

Let me mention some of the specific titles: One of the most remarkable songs I think is "One Night". This is a deeply emotional blues. (It was originally entitled "One Night of Sin", a song about a young man's first agonizing visit to a prostitute: "One night of sin, that's what I'm paying for" hence the later line "I feel so ashamed"...) It was a number that Elvis did early in his career in the original version and in the "expurgated" version that became a hit and which is heard in Helmut's version here. It was rough, a truly primitive blues number that Elvis sang with amazing power. I never thought any other singer would get this one right. But Helmut does! Lotti manages to evoke the same sort of guttural, harsh-voiced blues that sends chills to the listener. Another amazing song is Helmut's version of "Crying in the Chapel." The softness of his voice, almost a transparent whisper, like a prayer, is so beautiful, so smooth. It's thrilling. Helmut's "Love Me Tender" is not done using Elvis's hit folk-song version of 1956. Yet Helmut still uses Elvis as a model because much of this version uses the full-orchestra arrangement that Elvis used when he sang it in his famous "Comeback Special" in 1968. It soars thrillingly. When Helmut does the legendary "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" it is truly remarkable. Replacing the humming harmonies of the Jordanaires quartet with a single, aching violin is a brilliant stroke. The song comes off as a clean, beautiful ballad. Helmut's narration here suggests that the great Belgian singer could easily become a fine actor, too! When Lotti does Elvis's concert version of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" he drips the agony of dying love so effectively; even the quivering "N-N-N-NO" of the refrain is simply chilling.

This is a superb CD. I hope that those expecting classical music from Lotti will give it a chance. I also hope that Elvis fans will give a listen. They will find that Helmut Lotti is a great singer difficult to categorize because of the sheer breadth of his recorded library. This new CD expands that legacy even further. Do buy this CD. It is great and you will love it.
