In the early 1960s, there were basically two versions of Rimsky- Korsakov's orchestral showpiece: Thomas Beecham's and this one. The Beecham has been a longtime favorite in Britain, with good reason: it's a delightfully stylish performance, but even on CD the recording shows its age. Fritz Reiner's equally brilliant and even better played version, by contrast, still sounds fantastic, capturing every colorful nuance of this exotic score. The coupling is a spectacular La Mer, one of the most exciting performances available. These performers rarely had a bad day in the studio, and their recordings still stand as basic references for each new generation of music lovers. --David Hurwitz

I don't care much for compilation CDs. Usually they are someone else's favorite set of songs from that genre or composer. I usually like the songs, but when I get into listening to the other songs in the genre or by the same composer I find songs that I'm more fond of.

This collection is different.

I try not to be too generous with my top ratings in iTunes for songs, I don't give out a four or five stars to just anything, but many of the songs from this collection make up a good chunk of my top rated songs. I just love this collection.

There is a 'record player' hum in the background when you try to listen to various tracks on these CDs. The compilation is wonderful. The Quality of the recording is very disappointing. The outside of the album cover reads DDD which I thought to mean clean and clear all digital recording. Don't be deceived by the cover.

I carry this recording around with me in my case, and listen to it before auditions, concerts, rehearsals, etc. It's simply how the excerpts (along with trumpet playing in general) should sound. Smith's virtuostic playing, coupled with his vast orchestral experience, really teach the parts. All trumpet players, top to bottom, have something to learn from this CD--and while the entire work (with orchestra) and part should be studied (Smith actually recommends this), it is still very useful to hear one of the finest players on earth performing just the trumpet part.

If any principal orchestral trumpet player has succeeded Adolph Herseth as the "state of the art," the probable consensus among his peers would be Philip Smith of the New York Philharmonic. His virtually flawless technique, gourgeous sound, rarified musicianship and exceptional leadership make him virtually unique in his field, and his more than 20 years with the Philharmonic (plus his early years with the Chicago Symphony) have firmly established him as one of the greats in the history of orchestral brass performance.

Measured simply as a documentation of his skills, this recording would be an extraordinary document - the playing throughout is stupendous. But this is much more than that; Mr. Smith proves to be as articulate (mild "New Yoahk" accent and all) as he is talented, and his performance suggestions are truly helpful, even for those of us without his superhuman abilities. The recorded sound is superb, and overall this is a joy to listen to at every level. I recommend it without reservation for any trumpet player aspiring to a higher level of musicianship and performance - and if you play it at full volume shortly after your warmup, your neighbors will be very impressed.

As a trumpet player, I must say that Phil Smith's comments during each track are immensely beneficial. His thoughts have produced profound understanding in my trumpet playing, and despite the fact that this CD is intended as a grouping of Phil Smith's insights into common Orchestral Excerpts and his following demonstration, I have countless times listened out of pure enjoyment than to gain expert insight. His tone is the most beautiful I have ever heard, and it shows on this CD. I recommend this particularly for any aspiring trumpet student.

The previous reviewer of this CD missed the point of the CD. Lets say your working on the Carmern Prelude or Stravinsky Pétrouchka you buy this CD, and learn how Philip Smith (one of the greatest symphonic trumpet players in the world) would interpret and play it. Thats why its entitled Orchestra Trumpet Excerpts.

This CD would be excellent for aspiring orchestral trumpeters and soloists; although Philip Smith conveys his expertise exceptionally well, this short snips of music on this CD are no substitute for the actual full-orchestra recordings.

In the early 1960s, there were basically two versions of Rimsky- Korsakov's orchestral showpiece: Thomas Beecham's and this one. The Beecham has been a longtime favorite in Britain, with good reason: it's a delightfully stylish performance, but even on CD the recording shows its age. Fritz Reiner's equally brilliant and even better played version, by contrast, still sounds fantastic, capturing every colorful nuance of this exotic score. The coupling is a spectacular La Mer, one of the most exciting performances available. These performers rarely had a bad day in the studio, and their recordings still stand as basic references for each new generation of music lovers. --David Hurwitz

There is no doubt it: this is the Schererazade to own. Fritz Reiner with the CSO playing in the old Chicago Hall with its wonderful resonance cannot be matched.

Some will argue that the digital recording of Sir Charles Mackerras and the LSO is much better. And they are right. But what is a good recording without a great performance? The LSO plays this romantic Russian piece straight up, without passion!

Listen to the second movement of both recordings, and see how the swagger of the Kalendar Prince in the second movement is lost to Sir Charles, but comes through with such savoir faire with Reiner.

Or listen to the solo violinist with Chicago pull the last ounce of drama out of the first movement.

Or listen to the third movement with the prince and princess in the garden, and feel the romance that Reiner brings out. This is the sexiest Scheherazade you will ever hear.

    This CD is an essential recording for every serious oboist, especially those preparing to take orchestral oboe auditions. I'd also recommend it for other musicians who want to hear outstanding advice, as well as the artistry that John Mack demonstrates. He has been one of the finest musicians of the 20th century, and one of the most respected teachers as well. This CD is a terrific demonstration of his skills in both areas.

      Anytime you want to escape into a world where all of your most pleasant dreams are possible, this is perfect music that sets the stage for it. The famous Minuet from the String Quintet of Boccherini, the Kalendar Prince from Rimsky-korsakov's Scheherzade, Handel's Largo form Xerses, Mendelsshon's Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Overture, Bach's beautiful Prelude no. 1 in C Major (the best thing on here) and so much other beautifully played and beatiful sounding classics!

      I must have played this 100 times already....spectacular..a taste of the best of the Classics...Tannhauser is a really grand finale. Am buying more for my classic-loving friends and family.

      This put me to sleep. the first song is a good one though. by the time you hit song #3 you will be put to sleep.
