Given his usual penchant for homogenizing the Russian elements in so much of his music, it is a happy revelation to hear Tchaikovsky's setting of the "Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom." It is one of the four eucharistic services of the Russian Orthodox Church, the equivalent of a Roman Catholic Mass or Anglican Holy Communion service. This is one of his vocally most interesting and least western-sounding scores. It is given a strong, idiomatic reading here by the St. Petersburg Chamber Choir under Nikolai Korniev. Along with the "Liturgy," there are seven of Tchaikovsky's "Nine Sacred Choral Works," of which the first, "Cherubic Hymn No. 1: 'Izhe cheruvim'i'" is a particularly ravishing little gem, artfully blending the choral lines in an irresistibly Slavic tune. --Sarah Bryan Miller

      While I'm admittedly no musicologist, I do feel that the prior reviewers were altogether too extreme in their criticisms. Bottom line, these digitally recorded performances sound excellent--assuming that you can appreciate this Slavic genre! Moreover, some of these pieces may be otherwise hard-to-find. In sum, this is a CD to be enjoyed and esteemed by any open-minded devotee/collector of choral music or Tchaikovsky!

      The reviewer below is much more charitable than I. I found the singing to be overburdened with heavy vibrato, almost to the point of the stereotypically Slavic wobble. I am no fan of boring straight-tone singing, but the chords just don't tune here. The sopranos are far too prominent, but this is probably a combination of the high tessitura and unmusical engineers. Avoid.

      Although Tchaikovsky intended his liturgy for church performance, it is given a rather secular performance in this recording. The singing is in tune, but the basses are barely existent and the sopranos are consistently overpowering. Even though the entire liturgy is not complete on this CD, it does, however, feature 7 of Tchaikovsky's "9 Sacred Choral Works" which are not often recorded.
