Dark Waters

Editorial Reviews
Los Angeles Times, July 22, 20001
not just beautiful in its lapping atmospherics, but, in its repetition combined with unpredictability, downright addictive.

Album Description
The English horn is amplified and processed through several digital delay devices and mixed live with the tape part. The tape part was createed using raw material garnered from sampling fragments of an old 78 rpm recording from the twenties of "The Swan of Tuonela" by Sibelius. The 'low fi' sound and even the surface noise of the old acetate record, clearly heard at the very beginning of the piece, are essential to the dark qualities I tried to produce in this music.

HOLY GHOSTS oboe d'amore with live digital delay processing

After the satisfying experience of working with Libby Van Cleve on Dark Waters, we both decided another collaborative venture was in store for us. Although I am fond of the oboe itself, my preference for the lower range and darker timbres of its tenor and alto cousins led me to turn to the Oboe d'Amore, an instrument frequently found in Baroque music but rare in the modern repertoire. One of the most famous uses of the Oboe d'Amore in the Bach canon is found in the B Minor Mass, in the Basso aria 'Et in Spiritum Sanctum' - part of the Credo. There two Oboes d'Amore interweave lines with the singer which suggest not so much a rarefied holy spirit but a dancing one; the music has grace, flow and sprightliness. I have taken some snatches of melody from these parts and recreated my own take on the Holy Ghost. As the oboist plays the Bach fragments, digital delay processors echo them back and create spiraling rich textures which build up to create "ghosts" of the original material.

RAVE was created for the choreographer Paula Josa-Jones who commissioned it for her solo dance work Raving in Wind. The imagery in the work was primarliy avaian which led me to explore the use of bird calls - especially those of ravens and loons. The latter create haunting, plaintive cries, heard over northern lakes at night, as well as a kind of pealing laughter! The ravens have a most diverse vocabulary and are capable of an unusually complex array of sounds; I created a kind of gamelan with the few I sampled. In the middle section of the piece, the bird sounds give way to samples of southeast Asian instruments which share with the bird calls an elemental, primal sound; they too seem to emerge from the natural world. In the final section, all the sounds come together.

5 out of 5 stars WITHOUT QUESTION, ONE OF MY FAVORITE DISCS IN MY ENTIRE COLLECTION.......2006-01-29

I am always looking for new female artists to listen to, as that is my favorite genre by far. I love the sounds of Tori, Sarah, and Alanis. I saw this on the shelf at a local Tower Records and made it a point to go back home and sample some cuts of Beth on the internet. I was taken in immediately with the first couple of 30-second cuts. So much so, that I ran right back out to Tower to by the disc.

Not many CDs blow me away right out of the wrapper, but to say this one did would be a huge understatement. This CD instantly became one of my favorite CDs out of my many hundreds of discs and I played it over an over (and still do). I liked every single song on the CD and started ordering copies for friends and family around the country that also like the same genre. Every single person I sent it to had a very similar reaction as mine. They were just amazed at everything Beth could do from her incredible piano, to her beautiful lyrics, to her superb voice. I even went to her website www.bethwaters.com to order a copy of her first CD "Over the Tide", which is also another wonderful CD.

Beth is actually a local performer here in the San Francisco Bay area and I have seen her several times. She is excellent in concert and, to me, it is just a matter of time until she is a famous musician/singer/songwriter. That is why I try to see her as often as I can, as there will come a time when many people will wish they had seen her in these intimate settings when they had the chance.

Well, I think I am running out of adjectives. All I can say is that if you like this genre of music, I find it just about impossible to think that you will not be completely amazed with this CD. And, if you live in the Bay area, I highly recommend monitoring her website regularly to find her upcoming local performances so you can see her close up, while you still can. Enjoy!!!

3 out of 5 stars Still Waters.......2006-01-05

The world has no shortage of earnest young female singer/songwriters, and while I'm a fan of the genre I'd be the first to admit that a fair bit of it is self-indulgent or overly precious or even worse, just plain dull. Beth Waters though, has enough going for her as a songwriter that this self-titled release (her second album) never falls into those traps.

Waters' songs, which are mostly of the meditative, reflective variety, are based around poignant and interesting piano arrangements and have a warm, smooth sound that washes over you quite beautifully. Her voice though, is the real selling point, and as vocals go, Beth Waters are near perfect. It's a beautifully pure instrument - ethereal yet earthy and always a pleasure to listen to. Waters does the downtempo ballad thing well, but every now and then it's nice to hear her voice soar - as in the chorus of the powerful opening song 'Sweaters' or in the quite wonderful 'Spun Sugar', a song so good that Jewell would give her right arm for it. Another highlight is 'Down To Me' which has a nice sense of drama and tension to it.

With a little more range and originality in her material, Beth Waters could really go far, but for now, this is a solid, well produced collection of songs that will likely appeal to fans of Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos or Jewell.

5 out of 5 stars It's a good thing CDs don't wear out.......2004-12-09

Cause I've been playing this album to death. There's something about the simple musical repetition, the sparseness at times and the beautifully and almost painful lyrics that grabbed me and wouldn't let go. Most artists are reluctant to indulge in personal tragedy or heartbreaking memory and instead do the tried and true...love longs, breakup songs, poor poor me songs. Not Beth, she sounds sincere. There's mood, feeling and truth in this album.

5 out of 5 stars The best investment of my life : buying this record.......2004-10-15

Oh my, Beth Waters has touched me like no other artist. I can't believe she isn't more well known. Her album is beautiful, tragic and surreal. Every minute of this album is gold.
Every track really is a standout but there are a couple that stick with you. The album ends with the tear jerker 'Dad' - it's extremely sad yet so beautiful. I also loved 'Philosophy', 'Down To Me', 'Blue and White', 'Mom', 'Slut Song' and 'Surrealistic'...though all the others are amazing too. This woman must be from another planet because these songs are too good to be real - her voice is soft, beautiful and a breath of fresh air compared to what we've been getting in 2004. A meaningful singer songwriter with a wonderful piano to accompany her vocals and lyrics.
People have said she's too similar to Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan - why? Because she has a piano? Jeez, what's with people thinking all female piano players are the same? Although I love both Tori and Sarah (Tori is my all time favourite), Beth is outstanding. I would recommend this album to anyone - if I had tons of money, I would buy a copy and give it out to random people. This kind of album comes out once in a blue moon:

One that can change your life. For the better -

Thank you, Beth.

5 out of 5 stars Roman Twilights.......2006-08-11

I read all the reviews on amazon for this cd and went ahead and bought it about a year ago. I have to agree with most of the comments. This is not for someone new to Eno as it is made up of out takes from some of his best albums. However, if you are an Eno fan it is definitely worth buying. It has actually become one of my favorites. True, many of the tracks sound like different versions of previously released tracks. For instance, Reactor, Chermin de Fer and Dark Waters sound like songs that were on Another Green World. Always Returning sounds like something from Apollo. And From the Coast is Quartz from Music For Films, Fuseli is Patrolling Wire Borders. Some of the others were new to me but sound like they could have been quite at home on earlier albums. The Dove and Roman Twilight sound like tracks from The Pearl. Empty Landscape, Drift Study and Dawn, Marshland sound like aural landscapes from On Land. My only complaint is that the pieces are too short. Many could be extended to twice their length and still hold my interest. And it would be nice if the retitled repeats (Fuseli and From the Coast) could be replaced with new pieces. Still, if you enjoy On Land, The Pearl, Apollo, Another Green World and the original Music For Films you will probably like this one as well.

4 out of 5 stars One Man: Two Musics.......2005-07-03

I don't know if my CD vesrsion of Music for Films is AstralWorks; all I know is that the CD version rearranged the sequence of songs which is a sacrilidge - this is one of the reasons I still keep a high qualty turn-table in operating shape for listening to original vinyl releases.

At my age, I consider myself a fully competent commentator on Brian Eno's Music. Having first "discovered" my liking when I first heard "No One Receiving" and its David Bowid/Carlos Alomar style bomp, I was hooked. (I was in a Bowie phase in 1974-77).

Then my pure interest in Eno's music was the concretely sealed upon hearing "Another Green World" - That LP changed the way I listened to music. All of this on vinyl, at the time in which it was released.

My current opinion of Brian and his music is that he isn't interested in his own back-catalog very much or his re-issues. I am not even sure he owns the rights to much of his pre-OPAL material. Sure he gets royalties. But maybe not say-so in editing, I don't know. I'd be guessing

but, if you have been folowing the Oddities Volumes, you will also know he has a vault of things he (or his record company at the time) never released.

Eno has never been about the past. I consider him one of the greatest Futurists of the modern day.

EnoShop does a great job as distributing his current works which are almost all totally "Installation" music for rooms and enviroments he creates in museums etc.

Installations are Eno's primary "solo" medium. Actually, I think he's rather be raising his daughters or lecturing on a variety of theories and subjects, than making music. Not that he dismisses the fans of his music, but he has always just seemed to shun the lime light.

Eno could have been a great rock-star and he always went out-of-his-way to dodge this categorization.

Back to his current music - (I was fortunate enough to experience the Neroli exhibit in Madrid, over a decade ago.)...

From Neroli forward, Eno has pressed towards "experiential pieces" (in a way, like Stockhausen; These pieces, I feel do not translate well to the home stereo "Active listening mode". These works stil make for very good ambient music (in his defintion of the word) not the current translation of the ambient genre, which I would call "easy-listing techno".

On many great occasions, he has made collaborative musice that is much more extroverted and relative to the Eno we like to associate with the his first 7 solo albums ("The passage of my life is measured out in shirts"). But the lone Eno is a different animal.

His work with John Cale, Jah Wobble, Peter Schwalm and most recently and superbly again with Robert Fripp, brings out the very best of Eno's external musical self. He collaborates extremely well. He composes for himself, I believe.

I also see him faithfully applied as the "5th Beatle" in the music of James, The Talking Heads and of course U2. The song "We're all going to miss you" - on the James album with the pig on the cover - (at over 40 my places and names get foggier)is an excellent example.

This song could be dropped into "Here comes the warm jets" and fit right in; Farfisa Organ and Eno singing one complete refrain and all the backing vocals in his old reminscent style.

His new album, Another day on Earth" is very good. Eno has said it many times himself, he doesn't like to sing and doesn't think he sings well or likes the sound of his own voice.

To me, his singing is is like pure peace ( the second side of "Before and after Science" is just a vocal masterpiece.

Eno's voice is an under-used intstrument. But my opinion about his new vocal Album is that it feels forced; like so many fans wanted him to sing that he felt he had to put and album of songs together, even though this is not his current interest and subsequently resulted in not his best vocal album.

Maybe,I'll write a book, or a blog, because so many younger Eno fans may not have the same time-frame of perspectibeve that older Eno fans might have; I'm nealy his age and have everyting he's ever released and some he didn't release. (Those boot-leg vinyl's from the 70's were pretty rough.

Any way, this is not a criticism, I just think you have to separate the motive of the musician from the motives of the record company and try to figure out who is benefiting and calling the shots.

I personally did not need a re-issue of Another Green World or Before and After Science. But Somebody, EG or Island or Warner/AOL thought it would be a good idea; I don't know if Eno even had a say in it.

That's my 2-cents for the night.

Good night

Ambient American

1 out of 5 stars Astralwerks mastering errors.......2005-06-30

Does anyone have the final word on the degree to which Astralwerks (sic) have screwed up these Eno 'remasters'?

'Another Green World' has the first bars of 'Everything merges with the night' missing, 'Climate Study' is missing from this release (More Music For Films), and someone on the Amazon review of 'Music For Films' states that the intro to 'Quartz' on that album is also truncated. Are Astralwerks just a bunch of amateurs or something? Eno must be well pleased with this mess..

1 out of 5 stars Sounds like a collection of unfinished work........2005-06-15

I find it hopelessly ironic that of all the material in the dozen reissues thus far, the one I was most wanting to get my hands on is the one that I find completely extraneous. "More Music For Films", essentially material from the "Music For Films Director's Edition" promo and "Music For Films, Volume 2" (and evidentally largely released on a boxed set some time back) is mostly an uninteresting effort. Quite simply, it feels like a collection of leftovers.

The album sounds like it was recorded in several batches, with material from each session adjacent to each other. This gives a small feeling of unity to each section, but all of the pieces have this unfinished feel about them, as though this was the raw material from which Eno would typically construct his actual pieces.

Its not that its all that bad, "Chemin de Fer" early on is a nice piece featuring some superb fretless bass playing (from Percy Jones), "Reactor" is a nice percussion loop-driven piece with a sublimely irritating lead guitar (although at 1:40, it ends before it starts).... I could go on, but overall, this is a completely unsatisfying listen.

My advice, if you're an Eno fan, get ahold of this, you'll want it. If you're anyone else, digest the proper albums before coming to this one.

3 out of 5 stars Mastering Mistakes.......2005-05-03

No, I haven't purchased this yet as I'm waiting for Virgin/Astralwerks to correct their mastering mistakes. As has already been pointed out "Climate Study" is not on here but is in fact "Approaching Taidu". Also "Fuselli" unless it's a different mix that I can't detect from the sound sample is "Patrolling Wire Borders" and "From The Coast" is in fact "Quartz", both from MUSIC FOR FILMS. Let's hope they replace these repeats with "Dover Beach", the long version of "Signals" and both versions of "Always Returning". On a positive note the actual audio quality sounds promising from the samples I listened to (finer detail).

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2007-04-12

Lately I have been getting more into Underground Hip Hop and this CD has to be a CD that no one really knows about but is definitely worth getting. The beats are very NY style and good lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Mics, If I Had 'Em To Give.......2006-10-17

Straight through listen, absolutely no need for a fast forward button. Immaculate production, major label sound, and an absolutely phenomenal display of lyricism. This IS hip-hop, and as a matter of fact, one of those 'diamonds in the rough' so to speak as their style and level of passion for their music is rarely met, and never exceeded by those with millions of CDs sold, hundreds of thousands of radio spins, and countless shows under their belt. Wade Waters strives to produce music that is not only listened to, but felt, and they do this very, very well. Everyone who has listened to this CD with me in between sessions, or on road trips has asked me to burn them a copy, to which I reply; 'go buy one'. This is such an excellent CD, everyone who has been denied a copy, has in fact, purchased one.

5 out of 5 stars Chicago's Best Kept Secret.......2006-10-12

I must say that after being immensely impressed with North by Northwest and Return of the Kings, I was completely blown away by Dark Water. Soulstice and Haysoos are an amazing match up like Eric B. and Rakim, peanut butter and Jelly, Kool aid and Sugar. It great to see that in the midst of all the crappy commercial so-called "hip-hop" there are still artists like Soulstice and Haysoos who truly know and exemplify what Hip-Hop really is. Enlightening lyrics coupled with amazing beats, their debut album Dark Water is a complete masterpiece from start to finish. Soulstice, you truly are Chi-town's Best Kept Secret.

2 out of 5 stars On the Dark Side.......2007-02-12

I bought this "tribute" with great expectations, but ended up quite disappointed. The violin sounds after a while gets too domineering, monotonous and has the effect jarring my nerves. I've never been a great fan of "tributes", this production makes me even more skeptical.

3 out of 5 stars Too close to rock, too far from classic.......2006-02-01

My most dear album is Dark side of the moon, I'm a hardcore fan of this album, I have purchase almost every tribute there is, I always put myself in the intentions of the players involved in every proyect and I enjoyed every tribute album I have found in a fais measure.
But with this album I did'nt feel confortably, perhaps my expectations were others than what you get in this package. This is a rock album played by a string quartet (ok that's on the sleve so nobody's fooling you) and when I say a Rock Album I mean it, they tried to emule every single sound in the album with their string instruments, so you get a string quartet emulation of the album including the noises, perhaps what I'm trying to say looks great to you but it didn't sound great for me, contrary to that it sound very bizarre in many cases or scary in others not that romantic o soft as the colors in the sleve may suggest.
I think a tribute album is a very hard project, you do it too faithful and you end with a cover album, you do it too different and you possibly lost the great of the album.
In this case I think the players made a String Quartet Cover Album. If you are thinking you're going to get a softer or more romantic versión of the album or you are more into the classic music, forget it, this album is definitively not for you
Try the Dark Side of the Moon a Capella and you will enjoy it more than this, or the dub side of the moon tribute by Easy star if you are more into reggae, or the Out of Phase tribute to Dark side of the moon if you are more into Electronic, or the moon revisited or... This one was the less enjoyable tribute to dark side of the moon I have heard.
Anyway Roger Waters enjoy it a lot, ask for snip or samples of the album and try it by yourself, but consider yourself aware...

4 out of 5 stars Dark Waters is Beautiful...........2003-07-24

This is a CD that might seem nothing more than a gimmick on the surface; three pieces for double reed soloist and electronics using delay effects, transformed raven and loon calls and an old acetate recording of Sibelius' famed Swan of Tuolena. But Marshall is a real composer, not content with just a "remix" of his materials, he transforms the works into something new and distinctly his own.

The stunner on the disc is Dark Waters. Written for Libby Van Cleve, the performer on this CD, it is essentially a concerto for English Horn and recomposed and subtly processed strings. At first, Marshall's source material is evident.... you can recognize the phrases from the Sibelius work, sounding like it is coming from an old 78 gramophone speaker. But as the work progresses, the original material becomes lost in a beautiful and dense reworking, one that builds a new composition based on Sibelius' beautifully voiced chords, and adds layers of other sounds from the source recording to create a dark and alluring background. Over top of this, the live English horn and the pre recorded one exchange duet material and new phrases that are mournful and ominous. The work is a beautiful 17-minute tone poem and more haunting on each rehearing.

I wish the same could be said for Holy Ghost, the second work on the disc. This is based on live and prerecorded music on the oboe, and resembles nothing so much as Steve Reich's early tape-loop pieces, but without the sense of discovery behind the Reich works. Luckily, this work is short enough not to seriously outstay it's welcome.

The final piece on the disc, Rave, is scored for oboe, oboe d'amour and a tape based on the calls of ravens and loons. This is a more effective piece, even if it doesn't reach the depths of Dark Waters. At times the source material is fairly self-evident, but at other times you loose it in a glorious wash of sound with the reed instrument sailing above.

Marshall's music is fascinating on this disc...tonal, but adventurous. He has obviously been influenced by minimalism, but his take on the style is refreshingly free of bare repetition. Dark Waters is highly recommended, but Rave is also a well-done piece. Overall, a good modern CD by an interesting composer.

5 out of 5 stars Ingram Marshall does it again..........2001-07-13

"Dark Waters" is another triumph for Ingram Marshall! This set of pieces for oboe, English horn, and oboe d'amore (ably played by Libby Van Cleve) with tape and/or processing is a showcase for Marshall's electro-acoustic inventiveness. Unlike many other composers' works for acoustic instruments with electronics, Marshall's works are never overwhelmed by their technological component. Here, technology is a means to an end, not an end in and of itself. The finished product here, as always, is stunning.

4 out of 5 stars Nice dark soundtrack in 1940s setting.......2000-10-15

In The Public Eye photographer Leon Bernstein or the Great Berzini is always the first at crime scenes in New York to shoot some pictures for the main newspapers. Filmed in a 1940s setting, Mark Isham uses a dark but beautiful melody, played mostly by piano, in this film. Strings and trumpet play also a major role. Isham knows exactly how to create the feeling for the "dark brown" New York in the 1940s with the Italian mob chasing each other and the jazzy pubs where the sigar smoking high society meets each other.

      Album Description

"The Revenge of Hamish," new choral works by William McClelland, has received high praise from critic Donald Rosenberg in July, 2004's "Gramophone" Magazine: "Vivid music, vividly sung . . . The music ranges far and wide, embracing everything from Scottish folklorism and pop to many-layered, traditional a cappella writing. Whatever the style, the composer finds lucid and evocative solutions to the poems, all in English, which are set with such skill that it is almost possible to forgo the texts in the booklet . . . The William Appling Singers & Orchestra perform each piece with keen attention to words, blend and phrasing, and the instrumentalists are exceptional advocates for McClelland's appealingly direct manner of expression." Equally enthusiastic is William Zagorski, who writes in the January-February, 2005, issue of "Fanfare" Magazine: "McClelland is fully at home in a multiplicity of styles , and we are treated to a wide range of them on this release--from the tonally ambivalent parallel harmonies of 'Song for the Rainy Season,' the pop-inflections of 'The Ballad of Don and Dan,' the rarefied hymnody (sometimes jazz inflected) of the 'Five Sonnets for Men's Voices' and the ecologically inspired 'Collect Pond,' the symphonic grandeur of 'A Wood,' the offhand counterpoint of 'Wolf Moon,' to the ethnically Scottish flavors of 'The Revenge of Hamish.' Withal, a distinctively American composer's voice emerges, and it is both an imaginative and compelling one . . . Some of this program is a capella. Other numbers offer diverse instrumentations that deftly underscore the subtexts of the poems. In all cases, that point where language ends and music begins is magically blurred. The choral work is excellent and the instrumentalists play with both exactitude and enthusiasm, revealing a composer who is more than worthy of our attentions."

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must........2005-03-03

I could not agree more with the other comments about this recording. I also heard several pieces played recently on NPR and was amazed at their beauty and passion. This is a composer that deserves to be heard by a very wide audience. McClelland's skill in setting texts is truly remarkable, and his selection of poetry is flawless. The performances and the recording are both on a very, very high level. Anyone lover of serious and intelligent yet accessible music should definitely get this.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply Superb.......2005-02-12

There was a very good review for this recording in "Fanfare" magazine and it sounded quite interesting. The review didn't do it justice. Some of the pieces here are among the finest choral works I have heard. The texts McClelland uses are mostly American, and the music, while in varying styles, has a pure American voice running through it. This composer understands a beautiful, strong melody without ever resorting to triteness or cliches. In the piece set to a poem by Elizabeth Bishop, "Song for the Rainy Season," he seems to completely capture the description and atmosphere of the text's tropical setting, and the writing for the piano as well as the chorus demonstrates the work of a composer of consummate skill. The love sonnets written for male voices are, in a word, heartrending. The texts are perfection and the musical settings enhance each one, giving you a profound insight into the words. Isn't this, in large part, what choral music is supposed to do? Here is one composer who understands this, a composer who isn't writing just to show off his skills, but is really looking for something much deeper. It's just such intelligent and moving music, music that I keep coming back to. I'm so glad I took a chance on this one.

I couldn't find any other recordings by McClelland, but on the basis of this single CD, he takes his place among the ranks of our most interesting contemporary composers.
