From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce

Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15

Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08

They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.

I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.

We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.

Seek better versions.......2006-12-09

If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.

It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27

It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.

Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.

It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.

To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

Epitome of Ellington.......2006-12-22

Three Suites highlights the genius that is Duke Ellington. His music for Jazz Orchestra from the Nutcracker takes the music of Tchaikovsky to a new, modern dimension that will no doubt resonate with many the way the classical ballet music does not. The music for Peer Gynt is all at once subtle, dramatic and at times, haunting. I am not a passionate jazz fan, but Ellington seems to reach beyond to bring even the more wary among us along on the ride. If you don't have any other work by Ellington in your collection, this is a pretty good one to start with.

Needs remaster/repackage treatment.......2005-06-02

First of all, this needs to be remastered the way "Blues In Orbit" and the rest of the new Ellington reissues are being reissued, with DSD transfer. The cover is also very cheep looking. This cd sounds good (although very shrill at some points, like movement three on nutcracker, but needs more spacing between instruments. Second, this will please begginer Ellington fans, more than the expierenced. This is hardly essential, although it has many moments. "Suite-Thursday", to me is the best suite here. I don't listen to Ellington/Strayhorn's work for interperatations, I listen to them for thier brilliant original compositions. "Suite Thursday" is the only orginal work here and therefore takes top priority. "Nutcracker" upon first listened, sounded dissipointing, but I am beginning to come around to the arragements. "Peter Grant Suite" strike me as much better than "Nutcracker". One of the best jazz clarinetist's, Jimmy Hamilton shines throughout the whole thing.

You Can't Miss Here with Duke Swinging Some Classics!.......2005-01-18

The classics were almost standards for the great big bands to perform in their own unique styles. In fact, the Nutcracker has been performed and recorded over many years by many of the great bands. This CD uniquely displays Duke's version, tailoring 2 great classics to his unique, sometimes humorous, renditions for his many gifted instrumentalists, especially the sax men. True, I find parts of the Nutcracker just a tad dissonent at times, but Duke often liked to stretch the limits of his own, and other's compositions. This originality is what makes the Ellington the #top band of them all ,even if it did not always swing like say, Count Basie's, band. The PEER GYNT is at least as good, notably with the band playing the sad parts in a completely unique way! Topped off with their own piece, you can be sure that this CD will be listened to for a long time, even if it does (temporarily, one hopes) go out of print at some future date.

Ellington/Strayhorn/Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker is SWEET!.......2004-03-15

I owned this record (on vinyl) years ago. I bought it because I was/am an Ellington fan and had never heard of Ellington doing a version of Nutcracker Suite. I was blown away when I heard it! It seemed like a jewel in Ellington's repetoire: sheer genius, jumpin' jazz, and a tribute to P. I.Tchaikovsky that does his work very hot justice. Alas, an Evil Ex-Wife made off with my copy and then I had to wonder: Why was such a splendid piece of work so hard to find? I think it was on the Nonesuch label & that might explain it. But I'm Very Glad to have found this CD! Now my Christmases can Cook as in days of yore! Don't pass this up!

A genius re-imagines genius.......2003-12-31

Brilliant, glorious music--all of it, although I agree with those who have come to feel that the Ellington/Strayhorn version of "The Nutcracker Suite," in particular, is an all-too-often-buried treasure that no Christmas season should be without (and if you can ignore it for the rest of the year, you have more willpower than I). What happens to Tchaikovsky's marvellous music--and Grieg's, too--in these hands is creative homage of the highest order: the music is re-imagined from the inside, in wholly jazz terms, in a way that simultaneously illuminates and completely reconceives the original. What Balanchine did for Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky in dance, Ellington here does for Tchaikovsky and Grieg in another realm of music, and leaves us with works that deserve to be every bit as loved and celebrated as their older and better-known prototypes. And to top it all off, you get Ellington and Strayhorn's own superb "Suite Thursday." Listen and rejoice!

Wide Dynamic Range.......2007-07-02

I'm no music expert but, to be positive, this CD has very dramatic and rich sound. While the performance is outstanding (more expressive than a tape that I'm replacing) I ventured to write this review to say that the dynamic range seems very wide. I have a difficult time adjusting the volume to a comfortable level, I'm either turning it up for the pianissimo sections or down for forte. Too bad CD players don't come with a compressor-limiter dial. I have this problem on a few other classical CDs and it makes it hard to enjoy the music unless I'm in front of the stereo in a quiet room. For some reason, when you're in the concert hall it's easy to hear that lone flute, for example, but not necessarily so on a CD. I have a similar problem on the Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night's Dream / Branagh, McNair, Kirchschlager; Abbado, on Sony but this one isn't that bad by comparison. However, I find this particular CD hard to listen to in the car or at work.

Very satisfied with Karajan's interpretation of "Peer Gynt" Suites 1&2.......2007-05-31

I had heard, through Classical 102.1 (KDFC-FM), one part of the entire "Peer Gynt" Suites, namely "In The Hall of The Moutain King". I was curious about the entire Suites to consider buying the entire album. I enjoy listening to Karajan's interpretation of both "Peer Gynt" Suites. He paid very good attention to tempi, and the playing sounds superb.

POWERFUL WORKS; GREAT PERFORMANCES.......2007-03-16

I have long been fond of both composers, but have not always been pleased with the performances of their works available on CD. I have an old London Phase Four on vinyl that I enjoyed a great deal. Other offerings of Peer Gynt just do not provide the same level of satisfaction.

This CD however, offers wonderful performances by the Berliner Philharmonic, led by Herbert von Karajan. The audio quality is wonderful and is, in my opinion, superior to more recent recordings. One of my favorite selections is the performance of "Finlandia," which evokes the emotion inherent in the piece. I must say that Deutsche Grammophon has rarely disappointed me; even if one does not like a particular composer or performance, the presentations are always top-notch and the accompanying notes are always informative.

What makes this CD so great is how the Berlin Philharmonic performs Sibelius's Finlandia. Karajan is suscessful in making every single member of that orchestra (with extra gredit given to the woodwinds and brass) perform that piece in such a spellbinding fashion.
The Peer Gynt and Holdberg suites are also excellent sounding in this CD, but it is Finlandia that is the highlight.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Favored Recording of Grieg.......2002-03-18

I am most fond of much of Grieg's works, especially Peer Gynt and Sigurd Jorsalfar.

This is the consummate recording for me. His rendering of the Peer Gynt Suite is outstanding. In addition to the choral contributions which other recordings omit (this adds much to "The Hall of the Mountain King) Jarvi's pace on Morning Mood and The Hall of the Mountain King is simply the best. Morning Mood on other recordings is played too fast, which at the end looses the awesomeness of morning sunrise to this reviewer.

The Gothenburg Symphony performs magnificently, with due accolades given to the woodwinds and horns for their subtle, exquisite performance.

I would consider this or an equivalent on Grieg to be a needed part of one's classical collection. It is one of my favorites.

By the time Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic made the recordings featured here, they had been together for more than a decade. There is a lustiness and power to the playing throughout the orchestra. From the lilt and swagger of Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 to the sensuous humor of Grieg's Norwegian Dance--made memorable for oboist Ralph Gomberg's solo playing--Bernstein brought out the best from this strong and virtuosic orchestra. Here, Sibelius's Valse Triste is all grace and elegance. The Swan of Tuonela is superb for it's dreamlike pacing and the marvelous English horn playing. Finlandia makes a perfect finale. All this music is evocative and it remains in motion every moment, however subtly. --Gwendolyn Freed

Bernstein was a great and devoted Sibelian, on a par with Karajan and Beecham among international maestros. I don't think the reviewers below have much of an idea how exquisite this Swan of Tuonela is, played with total freedom and naturalness; the English horn soloist plays with moving expressivity. Even better is Finlandia, so often a throw away but here performed as if the entire nation of Finland were listening. It's a huge, bravura performance that brings out the brash side of the NY Phil. Bernstein's Valse triste, however, lacks mystery and rpoceeds a bit flat-footedly.

You can find the Finlandia and Swan in other pairings, which might be just as well since Bernstein's Peer Gynt Suite #1 is just a run-through, despite a rousing In the Hall of the Mountain King. It's not in as good sound as the Sibelius items, either.

This is a great CD but I can't hear it unless I turn it way WAY up on my car CD or portable CD player. I'm not sure why. I wanted to hear Morning Mood on my morning commute but can't seem to get it loud enough.

We've all heard Grieg's classic Morning or In the Hall of the Mountain King time and again. Bernstein, however, does an incredible job at making the music come alive. Although it does like power at times, I think Bernstein added much more emotion, clearly evident in Ase's Death and Sibelius' Finlandia. And although the recording was made in th 40s, the older recording technique adds a unique flavor, especially to the violins, which seem to scream in Peer Gynt. Although these pieces are by no means masterpieces of human expression, Bernstein has done an incredible job, and I find myself listening to these short little tunes over and over.
