The music is excellent, with high quality sound. Not irritating as some classical music can be. Plus the tempo's are varied which is great depending if you need something fast paced or more slow. Best of all, the kids enjoyed it!

Grandkids love it!.......2007-01-03

How to gently insert a little culture into the grandkids' lives without Mom freaking out.....send this set of CDs for Christmas. Dad's into heavy metal and Mom, although she has a long history of listening to Classical music as a child, is now into Country. Nothing wrong with that, but how are the three little ones going to hear any of the Classics with Grandma living more than 600 miles away? "Play this in the background while they're having creative time," said I, "and see if they don't enjoy it." When I talked with them a week later the 4 year old couldn't wait to tell me how much he liked the "playtime music" I'd sent him. The quality of the recording is good and the variety of rhythms and tempos make it interesting. Yes they're a little trite and you're going to have to explain that the theme to "the Bad News Bears" really is Classical, but that's okay. If they skipped the genius of Mozart as an infant, or even if they teethed to "the Magic Flute", these CDs will give them a taste of a variety of good music and who knows how far into the Classical realm it may send them as they mature?

This set tells the band's story from their first American hit in 1968 through to their final live shows in 1976. It does so through a remarkable collection of over seventy tracks (around a quarter of which are unreleased) across six packed CDs, all subject to extensive work at EMI's Abbey Road Studio to ensure the highest sound quality. If You want an in-depth introduction to the group, all their classic numbers are here, many newly remastered, while long term fans will turn to the twenty or so previously unissued live performances, radio sessions and alternate takes. In addition the box also houses a long format book written by Deep Purple archivist Simon Robinson, which tells the band's story in detail via 120 pages of text, with pictures, cuttings, memorabilia, musician profiles and discographies. The set is further enhanced by a selection of early tracks by the members of the band prior to joining

Without delving into too much unnecessary babble about the history of Deep Purple as if you are viewing this product you don't need an introduction as this is only for the hardcore fan. What I will say is that the content of this box set is a treasure trove of overwhelming excitement. I own aapproximately 20 or so variety box sets (Judas Priest, Johnny Cash, Willy Dixon, Free, Helloween, etc.) and I can confidentally say this box set is the creme de la cream of box sets. It is not only the holy grail of Deep Purple collections out there, but honestly, this box was put together with so much care, and love that it is flawless. Attention to detail given to the 120 page book included is better than any book you will find out there on the market about the 60/70 version of Deep Purple. It makes it worth the price alone. The real treat is the remastering job done on the 6 CD's filled with music. Just mind blowing how sonically clear these songs are. I was especially surprised how well the quad mix of the Stormbringer tracks were masterfully mixed. It is like listening to the album for the first time all over again, and instantly falling in love with those songs. Richie Blackmore is the main focus and force behind the Purple machine and rightfully so. It's his baby, and his guitar just melts your ears, it is so crisp and clear. The nice touch was the inclusion of the Bolin era on CD 6. What a great treatment given to him, to hear in the work progress songs such as Drifter, live material, and for the second time (the first time was with the Shades box set including 2 remastered songs from the Bolin led Come Taste the Band album), getting to listen to tracks off of Come Taste the Band album that are remastered. None of the tracks from the Bolin era are duplicated from the Shades box set, but the inclusion of Tommy Bolin Wild Dogs Live with Purple is a sweet tribute to include and remember then man.

All I can say in conclusion is that if you are a hardcore fan, or want to expand on the greatest hits CD you own and want to hear more Purple, you need this collection as well as the Shades 1968 - 1998 box set. Both box sets are worthy additions, and will quite honestly make your Deep Purple collection forever complete.

Five Stars for the First CD.......2005-12-15

But, instead of the other five, listen to the originals LP, from "Shades of DP" to "Live in Europe".
There are here too many titles cut or diluated in too long-massacred live versions. That makes inutilities and loss of many time.

On the first of all, you'll find pearls, really ! Debuts of Coverdale with a CTA reprise or Trapeze's Hughes very heavy, very... humble. And the magnificent strange atmosphere of pre-Mk I...

if you are a die hard Deep Purple fan like some reviewers below and of course like me too! you will love this pearl collection songs of deep purple. The 6 discs are 24 bit remastered songs, some of the quadraphonix songs like Never before, High ball shooter, soldier of fortune, stormbringer, Fools, Highway star are never issued on any cd format before.
Once again, the pearl collection songs are dedicated to "die hard and long time deep purple fans". If you aren't! perhaps you know the only one song of DP such as Smoke on the water! then please keep away your fingers from this, because you won't surely like them all. On the other hand, the most die hard DP fans would like the whole set for sure.

THE TITLE SAYS IT ALL..."LISTEN, LEARN , READ ON".......2003-07-02

Deep Purple are my other favorite group with The Beatles. I've seen them 3 times.. twice with Tommy Bolin back in 1976 and the other time in 2001 with Steve Morse on guitar. I agree with my fellow reviewers...5 stars isn't enough! This box is for the avid Purple fan and collectors. It's release is mainly aimed at the UK and European Markets which becomes obvious reading the extensive liner notes. While it may contain a few of the "classic hits", it's main emphasis is on rare and previously unreleased performances and recordings of those famous songs which is where it differs from the brilliant in it's own way "Shades 1968-98" 4 CD Box. While that set was more of a history lesson in "Deep Purple 101" but also included 'B' sides and less typical album tracks as well, "Listen, Learn, Read On" digs deeper while staying between the original "core years" of 1968-76 plus a trip back into time with Pre-Purple stuff on Disc 1. I'm still working my way through it but having listened to early recording by Ritchie, Jon, Ian G. Roger, Ian P. etc., it's really interesting to listen to them in "embryonic fashion". Ritchie's guitar solos on The Outlaws' "Keep A Knocking", a classic old Little Richard rocker, are a pointer to what followed. David Coverdale's vocal on The Government's version of Chicago's "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" reveals some "blue-eyed soul" leanings and he wouldn't have been out of place in Chicago or Blood, Sweat & Tears based on this performance alone. The Quad mix of "Stormbringer" brings elements I've not heard before. The live performances of the MK's II, III & IV lineups make one wish they could have stuck around longer than they did. I'm now seriously thinking of delving even deeper into the Mk's II-IV CD's released after the break up, "Live At Long Beach", "MkIII Last Concerts", "Days May Come..." etc. These are mentioned in the booklet and Simon Robinson and company's work in the accompanying 120 page book is exhaustive to say the least. How thorough can one get? We're bordering on something shy of Mark Lewisohn "Complete Beatles Chronicles" proportions here for research. This is what boxed sets should be all about. However for first time Purple listeners or casual fans this isn't the place to start..rather go to the CD Anthology, Deepest Purple or Rhino's own Purple compilation for starters and definitely the actual albums "In Rock" and Machine Head" (my favourite) in particular. The "Shades" box is probably the next step and if you're then ready to plunge in, then go for this masterpiece. For sheer value for money alone 6 CD's averaging 75 minutes of music each plus the book make it all the more worthwhile. This is probably the Purple equivalent of the "Beatles Anthology" sets unless there's more hidden that we don't know about. I can't add much more than my fellow reviewers. If you're a fan buy it! It's an amazing collection!

Great! This is the best box set yet. It basically gives fans what they really want.
This box is a treasure for Purple's fans, it's not just a collection of classics and easy to find rarities. This stuff has been hiding in the vaults since the 1970's. The rare recordings are a real treat and some are even better than the more common or famous versions we`ve come to know and love.
This complete 6 CD box set gives an unprecedented summary with the band's music offered chronologically.
The discs are kept in the most user friendly box I have ever seen.
It is a joy to listen to and a real pleasure to read this beautiful 120 page booklet.
As one reviewer said, "This box set is the definitive musical statement about the majesty, sheer power, grace and musical excellence that is Deep Purple".
Five stars is too low of a rating, it's beyond compare in terms of capacity and overall value.
P.S. Someone should place this box set at the door of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Wake up call!
Maybe soon we'll have the 1984-2003 box set! Hopefully remixing a lot of those 80's songs (the music still holds up but the production does not!) and finding plenty of good live recordings. Nobody has more bootlegs than Purple.
One last note: New DP album this summer.

A Must For Any Child's CD Collection.......2006-04-05

As a professional musician, I am always seeking great recordings for my 20 month old son. Since his birth, we have listened to this CD for quiet times and rest/sleep (it is soothing for us as parents too). I have purchased this CD multiple times to give as gifts to new parents. It is a favorite of ours!

wonderful CD for soothing little ones.......2002-02-01

This CD is right up there with the "things we can't do without" along with his blanket and pacifier. My son (now 17 months) has been using this CD since birth to help him go to sleep, and listens to it at every nap and before bed, and is one of the most important of our bedtime rituals. I am a music teacher, and I like that this CD uses the real songs (such as Twinkle Twinkle and Brahms' Lullaby) in the real instrumentation -- not synthesized like so many other children's CD's out there. It calms him down whenever he is sick or upset, and it also calms me down, too! THis is a must for every parent.

Album Description

No fewer than 30 rounds are included in this one hour recording. They come from many parts of the world, including a Kyrie from Surinam and the well-known Hebrew round Hava Nashira. Composers range from Praetorius, Mozart and Antonio Caldara to newer composers such as Elliot Levine (of The Western Wind), Pat Shaw, Jean Ritchie, Peter Schickele, Daniel Paget, Joanne Hammil and John Krumm. Nine of the rounds have a "Rounds Minus One" format where one part is left out for the listener to fill in. For those who wish to learn the rounds, the booklet has all the words and indications of how many parts there are and where to come in. As in any round, it's always intriguing to hear the first voice or melody enhanced by increasingly complex and beautiful harmonies as the other voices enter. The rounds are all acapella, except for one that has guitar and one that has ukulele accompaniment.

I bought the CD and the book, looking for rounds to sing with a group of kids at school, and am having a lot of fun learning all manner of interesting rounds. There are many contemporary rounds included that are new to me. The singers are just regular folks with regular voices that are very distinct from each other. I believe this is deliberate, in order to allow the listener to follow each part of the round easily, for learning purposes. So if you're looking for a polished, blended sound, this isn't it. But if you want to learn some fun songs to sing with your family, friends or singing group, this is a great resource.
