Locatelli: Concerti Grossi, Op. 1
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
It's important to realize when it comes to Baroque music, "opus 1" does not mean the first piece of music the composer ever wrote. Rather, it refers to the first music he saw fit to publish. Each published opus consisted of a selection of the best of a large body of manuscript works, many of which would likely have become popular and gained wide circulation prior to appearing in print. Locatelli's Opus 1 concertos are among his very best pieces. They balance instrumental virtuosity with characterful melodic writing better than the Opus 3 concertos, for instance, and they are extremely well played and recorded here. --David Hurwitz

Naxos Lost Riches...and this is a gem..........2006-08-10
This first six concerti of Locatelli's Concerti Grossi, Opus 1 is remarkable (concerti 7-12 are just as excellent). The playing is quite equal to any marquee orchestra (London PHO, Boston SO, Berlin PHO, et al). The production values are also first rate.
Since Naxos first appeared circa 1990, it's dedication to quality has never wavered. Even before the "official" fall of the Iron Curtain, Naxos was releasing recordings by Eastern European soloists (witness Irina Zartiskaya's remarkable rendition of Chopin's "Preludes") who were essentially anonymous in the West.
Naxos continues this tradition, providing the art music lover with an almost bewildering variety of choices from the standards of the repertoire to works long consigned to the musicologist and 78s gathering dust.
I've never bought a Naxos disc that didn't have top notch production values (even if I didn't particularly care for the music itself).
The discs always include well written, informative liner notes.
Whether you are a long-time fan of art music (of nearly all periods, from Renaissance to twelve-tone) or just beginning to explore it, Naxos is a perfect place to start. Their own website includes links to Amazon for hundreds of disks in their catalog.
And their prices still can't be beat. When they first started, the cost was $3.98 a disc, now it's risen to $8.98, still a bargain compared to the releases by the Big Three record companies with superstar soloists/ensembles.
Locatelli is an excellent composer.......2004-04-27
Locatelli may not be as well known as J. S. Bach or Antonio Vivaldi, but his music is spectacular. His Opus 1 is some of his best work. My personal favorite is concerto number 5, however, the entire CD is great. I have to say that often the Naxos label puts out excellent baroque music very cheaply, and it is often music that is difficult to find elsewhere. Quite seriously, if you are a fan of great baroque music then this is a CD that you should not be without.

Customer Reviews:
A "Warning".......2006-12-21
While I did find the music and performance on this CD enjoyable, a note of caution if you purchase it based on the back cover's notes. While the back of the CD cover does advertise this CD as music by a "Baroque Paganini", the liner notes as well as the music contradict this description. The music is by turns lush, energetic and somber and beautifully played, but it is all in style and manner extremely reminiscent of Corelli's reserved, modest concerti grossi. As it turns out, this is Locatelli's early music, and the daring figures and techniques the back cover mentions did not figure prominentely until Locatelli's later works, which are NOT featured on this CD.
In short, if you are looking for variations on Corelli's beautiful if somewhat reserved music, incorporating a slightly larger concertino group and occasionally some darker orchestral colors, you'll enjoy this CD. For more innovative Baroque violin music, let ME know what Locatelli's later music is like, or stick with good old Vivaldi.

Customer Reviews:
Liszt the Philanthropist.......2007-06-24
First of all, the first reviewer's discussion of a Baroque recording clearly indicates that there is an Amazon glitch on this page. If my review appears on other pages, I apologize, and I am discussing the Hyperion label "Arabesques" Liszt recording with Leslie Howard. This is Volume 35 in the massive survey of Liszt's piano music and it contains Liszt's transcriptions of music from lesser-known Russian and Hungarian composers. Some of the earlier versions of these pieces can be found elsewhere on other Volumes, like this one: Liszt: Gaudeamus Igitur; Pièces d'occasion.
Borodin and Cui notwithstanding, Liszt's exploration into Russian music centers mostly on obscure Russian composers: Alyabiev, Bulakhov, Wielhorsky, Dargomizhsky, and Bulhakov (different than Bulakhov). As always, Liszt's transcriptions are impeccable and serve to enhance everything inherently appealing about these salon pieces; the melodic profiles and decorative filigree make an easy passage to the single timbre of the piano. Honestly, these little obscurities are not bad. Bulakhov's "Chanson bohemienne," for instance, is strikingly lyrical. I've found much to praise in the first version of Wielhorsky's "Lyubila ya" and the second version is even more polished. Ultimately, the two winners are the Tarentelle's from Dargomizhsky and Cui. Dargomizhsky's is especially fine, memorable as much for its rhythms as for its thematic material. Cui's "Tarentelle" is fairly large (exceeding 9 minutes) and effuses constant charm.
It's no surprise that Liszt, the champion of all things Hungarian, paid special attention to lesser-known Hungarian composers. While he put the spotlight on Mosonyi and Erkel, there are other benefactors as evidenced on this recording: Abranyi, Festetics, Zichy, Vegh, Szechenyi, and Szabadi. Abranyi's tranquil "Chante des fleurs" or Flower Song is melancholy and entirely pleasing. Originally a song, Abranyi arranged it for piano through which Liszt made his own elaboration and extension, thus resulting in this "transcription." Liszt's interest in Spanish themes (Rapsodie espagnole) is no secret and he brings out the best in Festetic's lovely "Spanish Serenade." The two Valses from Zichy and Vegh are not unique, although Vegh's is a little more impressive, perhaps due to its length (9 minutes) than to any other musical factor. There is more substance in Szechenyi's "Introduction and Hungarian March." Howard comments that through Liszt's efforts "the piece becomes all but an original Hungarian Rhapsody, and resembles very closely the four late Rhapsodies..." Along with the engaging music, the structure, with its slow and solemn introduction and then fast Hungarian-sounding dances, surely evokes the feel of a Hungarian Rhapsody.
Bottom line: While Liszt's own music ideas are scarcely found in any of these transcriptions, his compositional hand is always present. Liszt's high art of transcribing music is usually revered when considering the larger and monumental works: Beethoven's symphonies, Berlioz's Symphonie Fantasique, Wagner etc. Yet Liszt employs the same degree of transcriptional skill in these little Russian and Hungarian pieces. And while he did so for the sake of increasing their popularity, he ends up elevating, I think, their musical value.
fine performance by Raglan Baroque.......2007-02-08
Locatelli's opus 1, 12 Concerti Grossi, published in 1721, follow the great Corelli's 12 Concerti Grossi, developed in the late 17th century and published posthumously in 1714. The concerto grosso form was a group of soloists, usually two violins and cello, the concertino, with an accompaning string group, the ripieno. This form was soon challenged by the Vivaldi model of virtuoso soloist with string accompaniment, but the concerto grosso survived untill the late 1760s. Guiliani took it to England where Handel's opus 6, "Mr Handel's twelve grand concertos" was published in 1740.
These concerti by Locatelli are good examples of the Corellian concerto, they have their share of virtuosity and melodic passages. They are not as good as Corelli, only Handel's could claim that, but it is fine baroque, and it is very well played by Elizabeth Wallfisch and the Raglan Baroque.
Recommended to all baroque lovers.

Locatelli is, of course, an exceptionally tasty sheep's milk cheese related to Romano, but he was also a very important and talented composer of violin music. Later generations looked back at him as the "Baroque Paganini," and his music abounds in technical difficulties and flashy writing for the soloist. Of course, instrumental virtuosity alone doesn't make a great composer, but in this collection of concertos and orchestra suites we see that the challenge of writing other types of music didn't faze Locatelli composer one bit. The so-called "Theatrical Introductions" are what we now call "overtures" or "suites," consisting largely of dance movements arranged in a pleasing sequence. The whole collection is expertly performed by this excellent "authentic" instrument group. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Delightful light baroque; a great find.......2007-01-31
I stumbled on these pieces by hearing one on the radio, loving it, and buying this CD. These are bright, inventive, concerto-style compositions in a style very reminiscent of Vivaldi. From the first bars of the first track, you know you're in for a treat. The first CD contains six "Introduttioni Teatrali", or theater introductions, which were apparently played before theater productions. They are in typical baroque concerto style and might better be called concerti for orchestra. The second CD contains six concerti with varying numbers of movements.
The playing is excellent, full of life and energy. The recording quality is fine, and the hall has a full, rich sound. After listening to this CD a few times, the pieces feel like old friends I've known all my life. If you like Vivaldi concerti, I'm sure you'll enjoy these.

Album Description
This special collection of seasonal works includes over an hour of the most moving and beautiful Christmas compositions of Europe's Baroque era. The instrumental music of Celestial Christmas 3 is a fabulous addition to any listener's compilation of Christmas recordings. Baroque instrumental music is distinguished by the all-pervasive basso continuo: an instrumental bass line played on a low melody instrument, with expressive harmonies created on keyboard, strings, or plucked instruments. Baroque music came to its pinnacle with the Italian and German composers of the seventeenth to mid-eighteenth centuries. Celestial Christmas 3 includes eight of those pre-eminent composers. Four Italian composers, Arcangelo Corelli, Francesco Maria Manfredini, Giuseppe Torelli and Pietro Locatelli, each provide a glorious Christmas Concerto. These are interspersed with three shorter pieces from German composers Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Friedrich Handel and Johann Pachelbel. The spectacular montage comes to a grand conclusion with Antonio Vivaldi's stunning Winter from The Four Seasons. Each of the pieces is tremendously emotional; together, they are powerfully stirring. Even though the composers intended them as Christmas music, most listeners would not want to limit Celestial Christmas 3 to that season alone. Not only is the music itself gloriously gratifying, but the European orchestra and its conductor perform each piece with remarkable virtuosity.
This is the third in this series of Christmas recordings released by Celestial Harmonies, each offering a unique contribution to the joy of the Christmas season.

Customer Reviews:
Roman tradition.......2000-11-05
I find this CD to be entertaining and educational. The musicians play extremely well. My favourite piece of this package is the notes written by Joachim Steinheuer. A brief biography is provided in which I learned that, contrary to popular opinion, "there is no evidence to indicate that he took lessons with Arcangelo Corelli, who died little more than a year" after Locatelli's arrival at Rome. I also found it fascinating that Locatelli terminated his successful career as a travelling virtuoso to live in Amsterdam when he was 30. Concerning the music, Herr Steinheuer pointed me to things which I had not heard listening on my own. The D major concerto has a small "violin concerto" for a Vivace. In it I heard a distinct dialog between the solo violin and tutti, the remaining instruments. Also, in this concerto's first Allegro, the ritornelli, a tutti passage, in the upper part is homophonic. The third and fifth concerti are the only two which preserve the traditional four movement slow-fast-slow-fast structure. Yet, the G major dedicates only the first six bars to the "slow" movement as a way of introduction. In the F major concerto, Herr Steinheuer made note of the Largo which features an unrestrained melody from the harpsichord which is played according to the wishes of the performer. All of these and more from the notes provided me with a fresh and informative listening experience. If you are interested in Baroque music in the Roman tradition, or in learning about Locatelli and his music, this CD will be interesting to you.
