La Domoiselle elue/Opera Arias

Editorial Reviews

Even if she wasn't game enough to wear a Columbia record in her hair (as pictured on the cover), Bidu Sayao had a voice that could make you forget Kathleen Battle. This Brazilian soubrette of the 1940s was as vocally lusterous and far more versatile, taking on heavier roles such as La Traviata and even an aria from Madame Butterfly with a gracious sense of style, passionate sense of character, well-placed high notes and an endearingly fallable coloratura technique. She's most at home in Marriage of Figaro arias from several different characters, but the sheer force of her personality carries her through the heavier stuff. Great sound for its time.--David Patrick Stearns

For two decades, Bidu Sayou, the petite Brazilian soprano, won the devotion of Metropolitan Opera audiences for her bright, silvery sound, clear diction, and discreet passion. This well-transferred CD focuses on Italian-language roles, with the Debussy the sole exception. Sayou's Mozart is outstanding; her innately aristocratic style is perfectly suited to music, even in roles like Figaro's Countess, that would have been too heavy for her on stage. She's a heart-breaking Mimi in La Boheme, a... read more

This is a must have if you are not familiar with zarzuela (Madrid's response to Vienna's operetta). It's a nice combination of arias sung by Caballe in beautiful voice and joined by her husband tenor Bernabe Marti for the duets. The CD comes with translations for non Spanish speaking which will greatly improve your satisfaction.
Caballe is in as beautful voice as ever and feels at home with this non very taxing repertoire. She doesn't overindulge in her other times frequent "floatiness" and is very expressive throughout. Thogh sometimes when some coloratura is needed she tends to drop the consonants blurring her enunciation of the words. We are used to this from her opera recordings though she's not as bad as Sutherland.
Marti is a nice tenor but is not in the same league as Caballe. That's why he never got star recognition though he made a few recordings whith his wife, like Bellini's "Il Pirata". His is a lyrical tenor, a little throaty but with nice projection of the sound. He sounds a little strained over the "passagio" but hits all the notes. More importantly, he compensates for his lack of vocal lustre with burning impersonations of his characters. Passionate and burning in some, tender and caressing in others. In this respect is better than his wife who is a little more doll like hidding behind her vocal resources. So I specially enjoyed the many and varied duets in this recording.
Strongly recommended.

Ana Maria Martinez is a young Puerto Rican soprano with a natural Mediterranean warmth to her tone and an easy upper extension that is suitably bright but does not lose the color and texture of the rest of her voice. Hers is a true lyric which will probably grow darker soon; at the moment, vocally, there's little she has trouble with. Her high pianissimi are lovely, her agility is tested and true in Juliette's Waltz, her sense of rhythm impeccable, as exhibited in both "Les filled de Cadix" and an aria from the Zarzuela "El Nino Judio." Her version of Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras no. 5 is lovely, including the difficult hummed part at the end of the Aria. She lacks both the heft and interpretive subtlety--or interest--for "Un bel di" and Doretta's Dream and lacks charm in "O mio babbino caro," but her "Vilja-Lied" is ravishingly sung. As soon as she begins to delve a bit into the characters she's portraying, she'll be quite something; now, however, Martinez is already a fine singer, with a beautiful voice, and should be heard. Stephen Mercurio is the sympathetic conductor. --Robert Levine

4 out of 5 stars A great singer for a great price!!!.......2007-07-01

In this quality CD, Ana María Martínez demonstrates a palettes of colors that clearly shows her mastery over the voice. Her ability to sing such diverse repertoire and keep an artistic consistency throughout the recording is to be expected of her.
Been myself a double bassist, I didn't quite appreciate the repertoire selections for this recording, although I loved the standards. Otherwise, I have played in the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra while accompanying Ana María, and I have always been astonished by her exquisite musical taste and how it shows through her voice. A great buy!!!

4 out of 5 stars Martinez sounds beautiful on disc too!.......2007-04-10

In 2000, I became a fan of Anna Maria Martinez's voice when I appeared with her in a production of L'elisir d'Amor at Houston Grand Opera. Her beautiful tone , passionate acting and amazingly consistant technique made a memorable impression on me.
It is a pleasure to be able to hear her on my stereo and to play for my singing students, a lovely example of a gifted young soprano.
The next year (2001) she returned to sing a role in Catan's "Florencia en el Amazones" and her voice was even richer and more resonant.
I am not aware of any more recent solo recordings so get this one, and I hope that Naxos will bring her back to make another CD, more reflective of how she sings today.

A beautiful instrument. The voice has such clarity! The Aria choices superb! I cannot bestow enough accolades!

This CD shows to the world what I have known for years.
Ana Maria Martinez in indeed one of the best sopranos alive today. I bought 25 copies of this CD for friends and family and they are all gone. Everyone loves it.
I have the priviledge of knowing Ana Maria for years and through her I met Steve Mercurio on one of Andre Bocelli's concerts( Ana was singing with Bocelli and Steve was conducting). What wonderful people they are. To both of them....Well done!!! Bravi!!!

Samuel Ramey has a marvelous voice and has the musicianship to use it well. This disc is most entertaining. No wobble, right-on intonation, clarity with the words that he sings. What more could you want?

    Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Samuel Ramey is a great artist!.......2003-04-28

This recording shows Samuel Ramey in excellent form. He sings superbly in each aria. The Verdi arias tend to lack the last bit of emotional abandon, but Ramey sings them very well. A few arias allow us to hear his voice's excellent agility. Ramey has excellent Italian and French diction. The "Calunnia" aria is right up his alley. A particularly nice surprise was the short selection from "La Damnation de Faust". Samuel Ramey can sing and it is no wonder why he became a major operatic superstar.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo, Mr. Ramey!.......2002-08-13

I am usually suspicious of singers that are currently on the media's "hot list" since they are often more hype than true talent. Samuel Ramey, however, is wonderful proof that a truly great singer can also be a media darling. Famous for his "devil" roles and his bare chest, Ramey is also simply one of the best male singers of our era (in any range). This is a great recording from a great singer and one that highlights some fantastic, but lesser known opera arias. As a fellow bass, I appreciate hearing some of "our" music, but I also enjoy the break from the usual opera record of the same old tenor or sporano arias. Basses usually get the short shrift in the opera world, especially in the recording industry, which is such a pity since the arias on this recording deserve to be revered as much as any more famous tenor collection. This is simply great music and Ramey is a marvelous interpreter of these songs. Ramey has gone a long way to show that we basses do more than play what I call, "dads, bads, and priests", but also contribute some exceptionally great music to a night at the opera. Bravo, Mr. Ramey!

4 out of 5 stars Engaging, lyrical performances.......2006-11-10

I actually came to own this CD because I'm a big fan of Charlie Chaplin. In particular, his tender masterpiece: City Lights. Charlie Chaplin wrote all of the music in that move with one exception - Jose Padilla's "La Violetera". This song Chaplin used as the theme for his blind flower girl. The melody is so beautiful and haunting, that I had to hear the entire song. It turns out that there are very few releases of this song available now. This disk is the only one with a recording from the time when Chaplin was filming his movie. I love Bori's rendition - I can't stop listening to it over and over and over again. The lyrics are those of a flower girl in Madrid, imploring young men passing by to purchase a violet for their girl. Beauty and love may be expressed for so little a sum through a flower....

Let me back up a bit and discuss this CD itself. You have to realize that this is vintage material from the late 1920s and the 1930s. The producers had a dilemma. They could try to suppress all of the hiss and surface noise of the 78 rpm records. But, in the process you would also lose the high notes of the soprano. Wisely, they chose to leave the high frequencies alone. If you want to suppress them, virtually all playback systems have a "treble" control, if not a full equalizer, so this is no disadvantage. Luckily, there is no detectable wow and flutter from warped disks.

About Bori's singing. It's musical, and tastefully done. It's not overblown with excessive vocal theatrics, or sentimentality as some of the early 1900s singers were prone to. She is an excellent musician. Yet, there is a detectable accent. In Hoffman's Barcarolle, which is sung in English, you've got to listen carefully to make out the words. But then, Lawrence Tibbett also is sometimes hard to make out. It may be their operatic technique of the time as well as the limited frequency response of the recording system. Tibbett seems to be a bass or baritone, and in combination with a soprano, a wide frequency response is needed.

Ironically, even though Bori was born in Spain, when I asked my Spanish speaking friends about the lyrics of "La Violetera", they noted that the Spanish was pronounced with a heavy accent also. Perhaps people knowledgable in Italian can tell us about her Italian pronounciation.

A word about the Italian opera snippets. I'm a nut about Puccini, especially Madame Butterfly. Un bel di is so critical to this opera, that it has to be done right. I'm stuck on Renata Tebaldi's rendition, which to my mind is the gold standard. Bori has a different view, which may take some getting used to. The notes do say that she rarely performed Butterfly in the USA, and so perhaps she was aware of her own problems with this aria. Tebaldi brings out the anguish and makes you cry. Bori seems a little more perfunctory.

Overall, this is quite a fun, musical CD with material that is not often heard today. I really enjoy this one.
