Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Tom Flaherty's compositions grow organically from small motives or cells that expand and contract in unpredictable yet satisfyingly logical spans. Always governed by a truly musical ear, Flaherty's music is too restless to be called minimalist, and too repetitive to be termed maximalist. The two duo piano works that open and close this CD sound radically different from each other. Vorarlberg Resonance is a response to bells the composer heard in Austria, and makes use of the overtones that bells and pianos have in common. Time to Travel uses a series of rhythmic ostinati that evolve continuously throughout the course of the composition. The two compositions using digital processor- Trio for Cello and Quartet for Viola and Cello use the processor to delay and transpose the input from the live instruments. When the delay pattern is overlaid with live playing, many different tempi and meters emerge from the composite. These two works, so seemingly simple in their materials, emerge as wonderfully rich musical statements. Timeflies for guitar and cello, and Semi-Suite for solo cello further pursue the composer's interest in exploring rhyhmic and metric interaction while writing challenging music for himself to perform. Tom Flaherty was a cello student of Bernard Greenhouse and Timothy Eddy, and studied composition with, among others, Martin Boykan, Billy Jim Layton, Bülent Arel, Robert Linn, and Fredrick Lesemann. A recipient of numerous grants and commissions, Tom Flaherty is an Associate Professor of Music at Pomona College, and an active cellist in the Los Angeles area.

Album Description

"Bold, remarkable, and thoroughly fascinating. A show not to miss." -- Chicago Tribune

With the entire libretto and lyrics taken from Gertrude Stein's writings, Loving Repeating is one of the few musicals to explore women's conditions and gay sexuality. This latest musical from Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, Dessa Rose) premiered in Chicago in 2006, produced by The About Face Theatre in conjunction with the Museum of Modern Art.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good combination of music and lyrics.......2007-07-02

This musical is based on Gertrude Stein's Loving, Repeating (a long gay book). I heard previously the opera Four Saints (by Virgil Thomson) with libretto by Gertrude Stein. I am also familiar with some of the works of Flaherty. I must say that this one is the best so far. Once on This Island is very accessible, but this one entices you to listen to the lyrics. An individual listening would really not do justice to the work. It requires one complete listening. the songs seem to be weaved together (much better than Passion i must say, and this is a great compliment). The songs grow on the ears. Very subtle. Angsty musicals and writers will learn a lot from this one. Not your typical broadway music mind you.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing score, lyrics, and talent.......2007-03-26

I have been listening to this non-stop. Being a Stephen Flaherty fan, the music as always is quite innovative and exquisite. The voices of the cast, especially that of the incomparable Christine Mild, induces goosebumps, and veteran actress, Cindy Gold, brings the spoken portions of the recording to life. Amazing and truly heartfelt show.

5 out of 5 stars Loving Repeating Wows!.......2007-03-12

Beautifully written story and lyric, performed by a wonderfully gifted cast. This is a definite keeper!

5 out of 5 stars I love it and can't stop repeating it (on my cd player).......2007-02-27

I was lucky enough to see this show three times: twice on the Northwestern University Campus (original musical title was "a long gay book,") and a third time at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. This show is stunning. I found myself humming melodies from the show - even though I hadn't seen it in over a year (and didn't own the recording)! The music and lyrics have a way of staying with you. This is a real work of art - poetry and song, based on the work of Gertrude Stein.

If you're a fan of musicals with soul, wit, and class, then you'll love this.

The voices of Christine Mild and Jenny Powers (Little Women) are extraordinary and Cindy Gold's narration is engaging and uniquely powerful. Combine these talents with that of Frank Galati (Tony Award Winner ... Director, Adapted Script) and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, etc.) and you have one AMAZING musical.

Highly Recommended!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Another fine addition to the series.......2001-02-13

After a bit of a slip with the second, this series was back on track with this third CD of songs cut from well-known musicals. As I mentioned in a previous review, just about any successful musical has had songs cut from it, not always because the song wasn't good, but because it no longer fit the show as updated, or a character or scene was cut (the booklet explains why each song was removed from its show). Once again, the songs are all good and the performances are wonderful. My favorites are "Mama's Talking Soft" (cut from Gypsy), "Big Fat Heart" (Seesaw), "Your Own College Band" (Where's Charley?), "When I Go Out Walkin' with my Baby" (Oklahoma!), and "Pick Up the Pieces" (also Seesaw). Bruce Kimmel was smart in using show singers instead of pop singers. I recommend the entire series. This CD features some fine songs that deserve renewed appreciation.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Disc.......2000-10-15

This is a fabulous disc from an important series--New Music With Guitar. The Babbitt guitar duo entitled Soli e Duettini is fabulous, a must-hear for Babbitt fans. I also like the the Roger Reynolds piece - On the Behavior of Mirrors. Davidovsky's Syncronism is a very important work for guitar and tape, beautifully played by the master, David Starobin. The Mel Powell piece is another very important new addition to the guitar repertoire. The John Anthony Lennon piece was a bit disappointing--it doesn't live up to what one expects after hearing Lennon's great guitar solo, Another's Fandango. The Elgart-Yates duo give a fabulous performance of Cross Currents by Flaherty.

This is a incredible c/d. Diana has a incredible voice that is wonderful to listen to. I would love to see her perform on Broadway. I have seen her performances many times at sea. Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          5 out of 5 stars What a voice...!.......2002-06-29

I recently picked up Diana DiMarzio's CD after hearing her in concert.
Her beautiful renditions of operatic repertoire such as Puccinis' "Quando Me 'N VO" and "Oh Mo Babbino Carro", soar with clearity, warmth, grace & of course, Passion.
Amazingly, she is equally adept on Broadway...I was enthralled, in particular, by her versions of Sondheim's "There wont be Trumpets", and the heartbreaking "It's never been that easy/ I've been there before".
I highly recommend this CD to fellow music lovers, and especially those who favor Soprano Vocalists.
          Well done, Diana!

          5 out of 5 stars Wow - She's great!!.......2001-04-17

I saw Diana DiMarzio as Aldonza in Man of la Mancha recently and was extremely impressed by her! When I heard that she had a cd, I got it ASAP. And I'm still impressed! Her cd has show tunes and classical arias/songs. Her version of There Won't Be Trumpets rivals "Babs'"! If you love this type of music, you'll love her interpretations.

Two arias, Chi il bel Sogno di Doretta and Oh Mio Babbino Caro, performed by Kiri Te Kanawa in the movie Room with a View (my favorite flick!), are on this cd, so it was a special treat to have another version of them!

I also REALLY like Back to Before from the B'way show Ragtime.

          Try it, you'll like it...

I'm not sure where/when she's performing next -- post here if you know of any. I read she lives in NYC. Thanks.
