Rochberg: Eden, Out of Time & Out of Space

The career of composer George Rochberg (b. 1918) has seen plenty of evolution--including his famous switch from serialism to tonality--and its share of gems (the innovative string quartets that looked back to past masters; his Symphony No. 2). To those works, let's add the music heard on Eden: Out of Time & Out of Space. This collection of guitar-based works (all featuring the exquisite and varied playing of Eliot Fisk) seems to offer something for everyone. In the title piece, we get a probing guitar concerto that varies between postmodern atmospherics and jazzy themes. Muse of Fire for flute and guitar is uneasy and foreboding. Meanwhile, American Bouquet is a collection of Rochberg's solo guitar arrangements of popular American ditties. From his thundering take on "Notre Dame Blues" to the tender and lush interpretation of "I Only Have Eyes for You," the work is symbolic for Rochberg himself--thoroughly American, respectful of music's past, but always looking forward. --Jason Verlinde
