Unlike nearly all of Sviatoslav Richter's recordings from the 1980s and '90s, this 1991 digital tape was done in a studio. It was probably his last studio recording. The typical intensity, and somewhat dated style, of Richter's Bach is fully present here, despite the lack of an audience, which often limited his involvement. Purists might not love this type of Bach playing, which doesn't live up to our current ideals of Baroque style. But hearing the music played with this kind of involvement is a treat and a moving experience for the rest of us. Very good sound, too. --Leslie Gerber

These are very compelling performances of these two works. And what wonderful beautiful works they are! By the way, you get English Suites 1 & 3 not just 1.

The reason I gave this four instead of five stars is because the liner notes, while interesting discussion of the role of these pieces in Bach's pedagogy, do not address this recording at all. We get nothing about when it was recorded and the circumstances around them.

The sound is also a bit wet for my tastes, but that is my preference and may not be yours.

I will, however, restate that this is RICHTER and definitely worth having in your collection.
