Charles Ives Works For Piano
Editorial Reviews
American Record Guide
"For the money, such unbridled creativity and compositional freedom is a total bargain -- and great positive behavioral reinforcement for creative spirits yet to emerge and speak. Mandel is an exceptional player who can be truly said to 'live' the music."

Album Description
"There are moments of quiet epiphany which [Wakabayashi] and Wise bring off with breathtaking intensity and beauty of sound. And, make no mistake, this is real music, not paper experimentation: inventive, communicative, life-enhancing. If you have yet to discover Ives, take advantage of Arte Nova's bargain price, and start here." -- BBC Music
The two movements of the "Pre-First Sonata" appear on this recording for the first time together in their original form. Nobu Wakabayashi, a native of Japan, is celebrated on three continents as concerto soloist, recitalist, and chamber music artist. American pianist Thomas Wise plays repertoire from the Baroque to the present day and he has made the premiere (or first recording) of works by composers such as Dmitri Terzakis, Kurt Weill, and Charles Ives.

Customer Reviews:
Just dandy!.......2003-10-04
My copy of this set sounds fine--a bit bright and edgy at times but nothing to write my congressperson about. I would've preferred a richer piano sound and modern digital recording, but hey, we can't have everything, especially in this sort of repertoire. These are swell performances of astonishing piano music. In unsympathetic hands, Ives (or nearly any "modern" composer) can sound like so much noodling--not so here. Ives himself enjoyed adventurous (and even incompetent!) interpretations of his music and was hardly fussy with his notation so it's tough to call any one recording of a work "definitive." A tip: look for hell-bent enthusiasm and/or profound mysticism more than any other qualities in Ives performances. You'll find them in this set, in old (and sonically imperfect) recordings like Bernstein's for CBS (now Sony) or the Stokowski performance of Symphony #4, and in the wonderful collection of Ives playing his own music. With Ives, the "critical edition" mentality or perfectionism of any type tend to miss the man's essential aesthetic and spiritual points.
More than a bargain.......2001-07-22
I listened to this set before I looked at the review already posted here; then I went back to listen again, thinking I must have missed something. For what it's worth, I did not detect distorted recording, though there are (as often with Ives) some odd sounds coming from the piano now and then--but I think they are part of it. Mandel's performances of the big works--the two sonatas--are distinctive and powerful. I am not sure I would say he replaces John Kirkpatrick's "Concord," but he stands comfortably in that company as a fine interpreter of the work, and his Sonata #1 is possibly the best I have heard of that work. The many shorter or minor pieces are performed well, so far as I can tell. I suppose it is possible that the earlier reviewer had a defective set, or possibly my ears are just not so finely tuned. I hope, however, that the recorded sound is at least as good as it sounds to me, since I would hope that both fans and newcomers would find this a welcome addition to an Ives collection.
5 Star Performance, 0 Star Recording.......1999-10-12
This is an excellent performance by Alan Mandel who, throughout these 3 discs, shows an uncanny ability to bring out the melody from within even the most convoluted Ives' piece. Unfortunately, most of this recording is distorted and noisy when the playing gets loud. All of the Studies on CD 1 contain distortion well beyond any professional recording I've ever heard (the 2 sonatas don't suffer from the same fate -- they appear to be from a different session). The fact that Vox goes on about their 20-bit digital mastering on the back of the box sure looks like they are "protesting too much". This is all a real shame for Ives fans because Mandel's playing is some of the finest Ives piano performances I've ever heard, plus, here in one place at a great price, are arcane pieces well worth hearing. (It's almost worth getting for that reason, but, in the end, you're stuck with fine music that's distorted and noisy.)

The life of Teresa Sterne is as noteworthy as the label she once presided over (Nonesuch). As a child prodigy, she successfully filled world-class auditoriums in the 1940s with audiences eager to hear her piano playing. Then, inexplicably, Sterne abandoned her concert career only to resurface as the leader behind Nonesuch Records in the late 1960s, turning the budget classical label into one of the more adventurous and consistently rewarding labels around (and generally keeping quiet about her earlier fame). Half of this double-CD tribute collects recordings of a teenage Sterne at the keyboard; the second disc is devoted to some of the finest recordings from her Nonesuch tenure (1965-1979)--both are engrossing.
Ignore the surface noise on Sterne's disc (no small task on the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20), and you'll hear a young pianist in fine form--she is expressive, and boasts crisp articulation and fine technique. She dances through Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 13 with riveting intensity; on Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 (with the New York Philharmonic), she shows a sensitive but no less virtuosic side. On the second disc, we get a virtual best-of for Nonesuch Records, including tracks by Joshua Rifkin, Paul Jacobs, and William Bolcom. Hard to imagine anyone doing it these days, but in one five-year period (1970-1975), Nonesuch released albums featuring the music of Stephen Foster, Edgar Varese, George Crumb, and a platter of Bulgarian folk tunes. They're all here. Now battling Lou Gehrig's disease, Sterne herself may be unable to celebrate this release, but for anyone who has treasured a release from Nonesuch's glory days, it's a moving tribute. --Jason Verlinde

William Gregory: "On The Turntable".......2003-02-22
Ives: Sonata no 1/ Copland: Sonata
James Nally-Piano (Eroica)
James Nally has conceived this great Modern American Sonata album, and it resounds with aplomb, idyllic youth and passion. The Copland and Ives Sonatas compliment one another like bookends, laying out a sonic wilderness that serves to remind us of our rich contribution to the cannon of contemporary music. The diversity found in the collage-like composition of Ive's Sonata is fragmented and trance inducing. Due in large part to Lou Harrison's considerable editing, Ives found his voice; a voice that pre-dated today's ideas of sampling. Ives extrapolated folk music, classical forms and gospel music to create a distinct voice that crossed boundaries. In this piano Sonata in particular we find Ives, borrowing from ragtime, hymns such as "What a friend we have in Jesus" and "Bringing in the Sheaves" and Liszt. While Copland's Sonata seems to be in juxtaposition to the Ives piece, it's simple to find the shared vision of the folk idiom and tribute to Americana. Mr. Nalley intelligently and vividly portrays these masterful pieces by setting the tone for each movement with precision and rapture. His playing is a concise explosion of mind, body and sound that is at times reminiscent of Pierre Laurent Aimard. This is a truly magnificent set of performances. William Gregory: "On the Turntable."
American Record Guide.......2003-01-08
Copland: Piano Sonata
Ives: Piano Sonata I
James Nalley-Eroica 3097-65 minutes
The first impression of this release is the strong lyrical sense pianist Nalley brings to these thorny American works: the first sonata of Charles Ives with its atypical format of seven movements (two of which are grouped together), and Aaron Copland's only piano sonata with its three movements.
Ives worked on this sonata on and off from about 1902 to 1929. Because of Nalley's sympathetic ear for Ives the experimenter, his sound is full of beauty, even in what may first strike the ear as startling dissonances. His lyrical and harmonic senses guide the ear through a thicket of otherwise confusing harmonies and textures. And the result is a revelation.
While there are many passages full of clusters and unpredictable and irregular rhythms, expression and sound are enough to know what is going on, whether expansive and rhapsodic or foot-stomping dances. There are pockets of tonality, phrasing, and rhythmic gestures that keep the listener oriented. So for listeners who had just a few experiences with the more disorienting modern music of the last 50 years, or for those who skipped it but still went to movies in the meantime, this music will not seem so unmoored and forbidding as it was when first composed.
Ives makes considerable musical and technical demands on the pianist. One can tell he had a good sense of the piano and what tends to work on the instrument, what is idiomatic and natural to the hands in this setting. Like Brahms, Ives was probably a big man whose physique seemed to influence the technical demands he made to convey his musical ideas.
At first, there is a listener's satisfaction in recognizing and being able to name familiar melodies. But Ives's intention was to use familiar quotations, (such as 'Bringing in the Sheaves') that resonate with the American experience. Often this took the form of hymns from the Protestant tradition. The closer the listener's experience with this tradition, the deeper the resonance of the musical quotation.
Copland's voice is unmistakable. Dating from 1939, his Piano Sonata, where I is so reminiscent of his Variations of 1930, is impressive with its many clangorous and granitic sounds--so many gestures made up of wide intervals and leaps. The playful and charming II resembles the helter-skelter scherzo of Samuel Barber's sonata. It uses the interval of a major 6th both melodically and harmonically as the main building block. III's tone is majestic and reverential. Nalley tunes in to the introverted expression, creating a timeless, other-worldly quality. The clangorous clusters resemble pealing bells, with their loud overtones. And as the movement fades out, the "bells" resonate as if at a distance. Remarkably played. This recording is a real treasure! BARELA

Customer Reviews:
Hodgepodge of mostly excerpts.......2005-05-16
This is a rather superficial compilation of excerpts from chamber and orchestral music. The only reason I even wrote a review is to mention that nearly all of the featured composers on this CD are 20th century composeres from very diverse backgrounds. There is an Arvo Part track, a track by the female composer Libby Larsen (I wish I would see more of this on these mixed CDs), and a beautiful Bagatelle by Miklos Rozsa. I do thank the label (KOCH) for introducing me to Rozsa's music, but other than that, it's pretty much bound for the next garage-sale.

Customer Reviews:
Belle of Amherst Meets the Swedish Nightingale.......2000-12-14
Chamber Music Plus continues its Parallel Portraits series with an examination of two mid-nineteenth-century cultural icons, American poet Emily Dickinson and Swedish coloratura Jenny Lind. The two women couldn't have been less alike: Dickinson was practically a recluse and Lind's concert career was heavily promoted by huckster P. T. Barnum.
As in previous offerings in the Parallel Portraits series, Chamber Music Plus has enlisted the talents of a well-known actress, in this case Jill Clayburgh. (Previous recordings have featured Theodore Bikel and Edward Herrmann.) Cellist/script writer Harry Clark has come up with a winning formula: The actor/actress portrays one of the historical figures and reads excerpts from the other's correspondence. Clark and pianist Sanda Schuldmann intersperse the text with music with which the protaganists might have been familiar.
The Clark-Schuldmann Duo are exemplary players, and they offer generous amounts of music. The one serious criticism I have of the format is that the spoken text often goes on much longer than is comfortable on a CD (it works well in a theater, by the way). Surprisingly, there are no examples of the vocal music sung by Lind; soprano Jane Bryden frequently works with the Clark-Schuldmann Duo and might have been pressed into service for the recording. Both Clark and Clayburgh have done their homework: The works are well-researched and -presented, and Clayburgh's understanding of her characters is evident.
All in all, a fine addition to this unique genre.
