Better Than The Complete Columbia Recordings.......2007-01-19

The other reviewers have said it all about Helen Ward, one of the top vocalists of the swing band era, and one whom I rank right behind Mildred Bailey. I actually prefer this album to the "Complete Columbia Recordings" because it doesn't have her later work (1950's)which just doesn't have the charm of the 30's and early 40's material, also it is half the price. ASV seems to do a good job at cleaning up their source material, but remember that these are 70 year old recordings. I absolutely love "Night Wind" and "Throwing Stones at the Sun", they capture the spirit of that era.

Female Big Band Singers.......2007-01-04

Gentlemen: I have been buying Big Band CD's from your outfit for couple of years now and I find them of top quality. I like your set-up for ordering items, and the fast delivery. I also like the fact that I can listen to a
few bars of the tracks the CD has. This enables me to Identify it as an original cut and not knock-off.

Great Music, Poor Recording.......2006-08-02

I would have given this item 5 stars, but I feel that the poor recording process used in making this CD really takes away from fully enjoying it.

When I first put in the CD, I noticed that the recording level was too low, meaning that the music was very quiet. After turning up the volume, then came the excessive background noise. A stereo with a multiband equalizer would have helped to filter out some of the noise in this case, but not everyone has such an item.

I understand that these are old recordings and recorded in mono, but I have heard much better from this era. Actually, I have several of these songs on 10 inch 78 r.p.m. records and find these much easier to listen to. Just call me a vintage audio snob if you want.

As far as the music is concerned, it is great and I would recommend the CD just for that. Helen Ward has a doll of a voice and does great adding to the big band sounds of that time.

One of the best.......2003-12-18

This is a fine collection of songs from one of the most underrated vocalists of the swing era. Ward had a distinctive, jazzy style; and she expressed the old standybys in ways that nobody else could. Highly recommended; but Ward's biggest fans would be better off with the complete Helen Ward on Columbia 2-CD set, which has a lot of the harder to find material.

Definitely worth it.......2002-10-27

I first heard Helen Ward while listening to a best of Benny Goodman CD, and was intrigued with her voice. This CD gives a good overview of her work, and it is definitely worth purchasing. For anyone interested in music with vocals from this era, it's a must.

A wonderful collection of Khachaturian suites.......2004-12-27

Khachaturian (1903-1978) was an Armenian composer who came under scrutiny during the reign of Stalin for adhering more to "antipopular" musical styles. His style is similar to Prokofiev's and Shostakovich's; sometimes, his music seems like a blend of the two composers' styles. More modern comparisons to Khachaturian include Basil Poledouris ('Robocop,' 'Hunt for Red October,' 'Conan the Barbarian') and Danny Elfman ('Beetlejuice,' 'Edward Scissorhands'). The Finale of 'Prisoner No.217,' at times, harmonically resembles 'Conan the Barbarian.' I do not recommend this CD as an introduction to Khachaturian's music, rather try a recording of his ballet 'Spartacus.'

The Overture to 'Pepo,' the first track on the album, is perhaps the most beautiful of all the tracks.

'Undying Flame' is a suite of eight small pieces -- the longest, the Finale, being only three and a half minutes in length. 'The battle and Christ' is quite exciting with high woodwind flurries and charging snares and timpani. The Finale begins like an organ chorale with thumping bass and homophonic texture. It builds to a climax of sorts but it isn't very exciting. The final chord features the high woodwinds with horn and string bass. The harp plucks an augmented fourth above the tonic, leaving the final chord very dissonant but still beautiful.

'Secret Mission' is six pieces also of short length. Percussion shines through again, especially in "Surrender." Triplet figures in the trumpets and woodblock provide a galloping-horse effect; nevermind that 'Secret Mission' was a WWII flick. "The pilot" is a wonderful march with syncopation, piccolo and xylophone melody, and a cute brass riff. This suite also has another exciting Finale.

The Overture in 'Admiral Ushakov' contains an interesting pastorale-like melody for clarinet and oboe. "The Battle" is interesting with continuous sixteenth-note licks in the horns. Tubas get a moment to shine here, but percussion and trumpets slightly drown them out. "Funeral" contains beautiful, sombre chord progressions supporting a very 'Russian' melody in the strings. "Russian sailors" contains a march very Mahler-esque in style with timpani playing the tonic and dominant and the horns playing a heroic tune with accents from the trumpets. The Finale is the first on the CD that actually leaves you feeling like the suite has come to its full fruition.

Conversely, the Overture of 'Prisoner No.217' is the first to sound like a true overture with better developed melodies and sections of contrasting mood. "Murder" contains a creepy passage with bass clarinet melody, shivering strings, and a dancing-bone xylophone. "In the prison" continues the dark mood with the shivering strings even higher and an evil downward three-note figure in the lower strings. Percussion begs to burst forth, but that doesn't occur until "Work." The Finale, although not the best Finale on this recording, contains many beautiful moments, especially one passage following a connecting solo cello line.

As a whole, this is a nice collection of Khachaturian's suites, 'Secret Mission' being the most spectacular. Armenians must be proud of their Philharmonic Orchestra, especially its percussion section. The package has great liner notes. The fade in the concert hall can be heard at the end of some tracks, which is a good thing. It makes it seem more like a performance instead of a recording.

Four tenors, Four styles. So much has been said about Gigli, that I can`t really add anything new, other than that I find his singing, the more I hear it, mannered and selfconcious. His famous silvery mezza-voce to me sounds disconnected almost child-like. BUT! If he were to sing today, the world would proclaim him "the umpteenth Tenor!!" Lauri Volpi: Focussed, explosive, virile and almost always thrilling. Now the Montagnana-boys: Martinelli, "The big Bugle" as he was known in New York, is an acquired taste. He has a vibrato very typical of that time, fast and a little tight, and can sound a little bleaty. But listen again, and you`ll be rewarded. He can really spin a line, make the text tell and hits you right in the gut with his timbre. As further listening, I`d recommend the live Otello from the Met with Tibbett and Rethberg. Wonderful!! Now, to the most neglected of all great singers of all time. The most thrilling, visceral, even-voiced. He can carry the lightest pianissimo in any range and make it spin and spin and... He can sing so loudly he`ll pin you to your seat. The voice has presence and ring, what the italians call "squillo" that you can reach out and touch. The voice is focussed like a laser, yet never sounds tight. Even in full flight there`s always some in reserve. Pertile, of course. This is not a dozen-instrument. You`ll never mistake him (or any of the others, for that matter) with any other singer. From the first note I ever heard from him, I have been spellbound. Everything I ever wished I could do and be, he does with consumate ease. You owe it to yourself to hear his "quando le sere al placido" from Luisa Miller. He sings lines that never end, goes from piano to forte in the same phrase without altering the timbre or colour.... I could go on for days, but I think you get the message: Buy this, or any other CD with Pertile and prepare to fall for a singer who would sweep the decks anywhere in the world today. It`s your loss if you don`t!

ONE GOLD, TWO SILVERS AND ONE BRONZE.......2001-05-16

Here we have four Italian tenors of the golden age, who captured world attention in that glorious past for their vocal and interpretative capacity. Other names that come to mind are Caruso, Zenatello, Grassi, Anselmi, Schipa, Paoli, De Muro, Merli and Bonci.

The four tenors on this superb CD have a lot in common. Born within seven years apart, between 1885 and 1892, they (except Pertile) sang at the Met, the temple of operatic singing. All of them displayed mezza voce and heroic top notes on the stage.

This CD has collected and handed to posterity their prowess, when the tenors were in their late thirties and at their prime. Interestingly, one may draw vocal attributes from their performances and make comparisons.

Martinelli displayed a heroic and massive, Pertile, a sage but hard-driven, Gigli, an elegiac or turgid and Lauri-Volpi a robust, limpid and easily extended voice. The gold medal goes to Lauri-Volpi, the silver to Martinelli and Gigli, the bronze to Pertile.

I liked Martinelli in "Come un bel di di maggio"(Chenier) full of pathos, Pertile "Vesti la giubba" (Pagliacci) for great artistry, Gigli "Dai campi, dai prati" (Mefistofele) for inspired mysticism and Lauri-Volpi "Bianca al par di neve"(Les Huguenots) for unique mezza voce.

Battle of the salon stars.......2001-02-09

This is an interesting recreation of a competition between two of the foremost European pianists of the mid-19th century. All of the selections are showcases for each performer's reputed strengths, as well as making for rewarding listening. Stephen Mayer does a wonderful job imagining the styles of Liszt and Thalberg. The Liszt selections are dramatic; while the Thalberg pieces are more cultured-sounding, almost limpid. This recording presents new pieces that are very difficult to play and to find in other recordings. I was acquainted to Mr. Thalberg through this recording. This recording has some special points to be considered : 1st - If you don't know Thalberg, buy it.... 2nd - There is a Webern piece that is very good too.
