Lassus: Penitential Psalms / Tolz Boys Choir / Musicalische Compagney Berlin / Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden
Editorial Reviews Tolzer Knabenchor (Tolz Boys Choir) Orlando De Lassus is undoubtedly the most important sixteenth-century composer after Palestrina. A very prolific composer of both sacred and secular music, he wrote over 70 complete masses, more than 500 motets, over 200 Italian madrigals, 146 French chansons, 93 German songs, 100 settings of the Magnificat and 32 anthems as well as litanies and smaller works. Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden, together with the Tolz Boys Choir, which he founded in 1956 has made it his life's work to re-establish the original vocal tradition. Lassus's Penitential Psalms are impressive in their entirety and in their tiniest detail. The fact that they may now be marveled at again in their original sound for the first time in more than 400 years is a small miracle brought to pass by Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden, his Tolz Boys Choir and Capriccio's dedication as a record label.
