Brahms: Trio for Horn, Violin & Piano, Op. 40; Clarinet Sonatas
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
These are some good musicians, but unfortunately they haven't made a very good recording. The excellent horn player and violinist, both renowned from many fine recordings, play up to their usual standard in the trio. But neither the pianist nor the sound quality is up to the same level. Werner Genuit's playing is earthbound and the piano sounds downright unpleasant in this odd recording. Dieter Klöcker, also well known as leader of the chamber ensemble Consortium Classicum, doesn't play with enough personality to carry his musically demanding part, and in combination with Genuit the music just doesn't come to life. Sorry! --Leslie Gerber

cello lover.......2007-05-31
Absoluty the best. It is no wonder she was the world premier cello artist!! Can't say enough. If you love cello, and classical music, this is a must have. Her whole collection is worth every penny!!!
99% perspiration.......2006-11-08
(4.5/5 stars) This is a two-disc collection of musical works, in which the great cellist Jacqueline du Pre plays. The first disc consists of three cello concerti by three different composers: Dvorak (Romantic), Haydn (Classical) and Elgar (Romantic). Very good music, though it might leave you wondering what all the fuss is about. Not to worry: just pop in Disc Two to find out. The second disc contains shorter works by a wider variety of composers. It also might just leave you breathless by its beauty. Saint-Säens' "The Swan" (from "Carnival of the Animals") is nearly indescribable in its elegance, with du Pre's cello dancing with a harp. This haunting recording should not be missed. Bruch's "Kol Nidrei" is magnificently gorgeous as well. Three fantasy pieces from Schumann, one of Mendelssohn's "Lieder Ohne Wörter" and a stunning Brahms sonata infuse this collection with genuine grace. Since these were recorded prior to the advent of digital recordings, you might hear a very slight hiss on some of the recordings. This is barely audible and really does not detract from the pleasure of listening to it. Each disc runs 75 minutes, making this inspiration last long indeed.
Immortal Legend.......2006-10-07
As a cellist, I grew up listening to Jacqueline Du Pre's recordings. Even now as a 35 year old, I'm still enthralled by her amazing talent. This is a great cd if one is looking for a wonderful introduction to this superb cellist or simply wants to savor her most well known recordings. Du Pre owned the "Elgar" concerto. No other words can summarize this fact. Other beautiful and moving pieces are here on this disc: Bruch "Kol Nidrei", Haydn "Concerto No.2", Faure "Elegie", Brahms "Concerto No.2". The cello is a difficult instrument to play due to the strength required in both hands. Du Pre's playing touches the heartstrings with both emotion and depth. The tone that she coaxes from her cello is amazing. Jacqueline Du Pre is a legend.
Epitome of Cello.......2006-06-23
As a cellist, I absolutely love du Pré's work. I actually found this CD when I was looking for a modern recording of "A Jacqueline du Pré Recital", a record compiled of pieces done between July 15, 1962 and April 1, 1969. The second CD in this set contains the same songs as that record.
The concertos on the first CD are spectacular, especially her rendition of the Elgar concerto which has defined the piece since she first performed it. The second CD, however, is just as wonderful as a collection of some of the most loved cello pieces. No cello recording complete without Saint Saen's "The Swan" and du Pré's version is the only one I've ever heard that I actually like. "Elégie in C minor" (composed by Gabriel Fauré) is one of my personal favorites especially since her rapport with the pianist is obvious and the two instruments blend in a way that makes the piece even more poignant.
Overall, this CD is a must-have for anyone who loves cello as a perfect sample of Jacqueline du Pré's work.
Ooo! Samples!.......2005-11-29
As far as the romantic period goes, Jacqueline Du Pre is my personal favorite 'cellist. Her sensitivity to put expression of the musical idea always outweighed the desire to appear impressive. There is a difference in being just a virtuoso and being a musician. A virtuoso has the capability to dazzle and amaze, but music is more than just being impressive, and Du Pre succeeds in becoming, in every sense, a musician first and foremost. The only complaint I have of this album is the fact that you only get one movement of each piece! Even so, this a wonderful "sample dish" of Du Pre's extraordinary playing, mainly meant to get you hooked so you can get more.

Customer Reviews:
Heavenly.......2007-06-06
A collection of masters that insist that you relax as you listen. An exquisit addition to any music cd collection.
What a value!.......2005-07-26
A wonderful collection of music spanning from the Baroque to the Modern and so Affordable. Each CD is in a full size jewel-case with beautiful cover art - paintings of Renaissance-era angels in muted, slightly reflective, metal-tone inks - all within a box that ties them all together. There are no liner notes in the booklet, just track listings, but the music speaks for itself. It's not completely apparent from the track listing who the composers are, so here's the breakdown: Disc 1 - Vivaldi's "Four Seasons"; Disc 2 - Vivaldi flute concertos; Disc 3 and 4 - Bach Brandonburg concertos; Disc 5 - Bach violin concertos; Disc 6 - Handel concerto grossi; Disc 7 - Handel organ concertos; Disc 8 - Flute concertos by Quantz, Heinchen, Buffardin, Adolph-Hasse; Disc 9 - Mozartt violin concertos; Disc 10 - Mozart horn concertos; Disc 11 - Mozart piano concertos; Disc 12 - Haydn cello concertos; Disc 13 - Haydn violin concertos; Disc 14 - Tchaikovsky violin concerto and piano concerto; Disc 15 - Paganini and Chausson violin concertos; Disc 16 - Bruch and Mendelssohn violin concertos; Disc 17 - Brahms concertos; Disc 18 - Dvorak and Hindesmith cello concertos; Disc 19 - Russian composers Prokofiev, Galzanov and Shoshakovich violin concertos; Disc 20 - Spanish guitar concertos of Rodrigo, Sor, Granados, Albeniz and de Falla.

Correction to review concerning the versions of the op. 8 trio.......2006-06-10
Christopher Smith is in error in saying that the Borodin Trio's performance of Brahms's B Major Piano Trio, on Chandos CHAN 8334/5, is the original version. The Borodin Trio recorded only the revised version (unless they made a second recording I'm unaware of). So far as I can tell from the Amazon Web listings and old Penguin Guides, the original version has been recorded by the following groups: Odeon Trio, Trio Opus 8, Altenberg Trio, and Parnassus Trio. The last two groups recorded both versions. Apart from listening, one can tell from the movement designations which version one is dealing with. For instance, the first movement was originally allegro con moto and was revised to allegro con brio, and the third movement was changed from adagio non troppo to adagio. Also, I think you will find that the "great chunks" Brahms removed in his revision are from the first and third movements, not the second (scherzo) movement. Incidentally, I would have preferred not to rate this recording, as my purpose is only to make a correction and the Beaux Arts Trio recording I have is another version with a different violinist, but Amazon's system would not let me do so without including a rating, so I have provided a rating that corresponds to the average of the other ratings.
Excellent buy, whether "budget" or not.......2006-02-02
The three trios on the "B" CD especiall show the emotional depth of Brahms later life chamber music. The Clarinet Trio is well rendered with a supple, yet reserved, but not austere, style.
Excellent, delightful.......2004-11-04
This set is a treat for any Brahms lover. Excellent performance, elegance, depth and profound understanding. True Brahms !!!
Becoming a favorite.......2000-10-17
After listening to the first movement of the C major I'd agree that it's a shade brisk and perfunctory. I've now listened to this performance of the clarinet trio many times. This is a piece that made no impression on me until I listened repeatedly and studied the score. I now realize that, while it's not a perfectly satisfying masterpiece, it has a subdued, elusive beauty, plus it's a remarkably concise piece. I have a theory that it was written in memory of Schumann. Some reasons: 1) the key of A minor was a favorite of Schumann's, 2) the opening melody for cello resembles the opening theme of Schumann's cello concerto (also in A minor), 3) the climax of the coda of the first movement (bars 194-200) has several Schumannesque descending fifths in the melody, 4) the whole piece has a feeling of sad reminiscence such as one can imagine Brahms would feel late in his own life thinking back on his friend, now dead thirty years. The clarinet trio is played very beautifully with no hint of the perfunctory quality mentioned above in connection with the C major trio. This is great music that deserves to be studied and thought about, not just played in the background.
Addendum (10/2002)...I just want to take back what I said about the C major being perfunctory. I've had many hours of enjoyment from all tracks on these discs, particularly the C major and C minor piano trios and the clarinet trio. That business about "perfunctory" was a very superficial initial reaction. These guys play with fire and sweep...crack open a beer and crank it up!
a real disappointment.......2000-07-19
Although I haven't listened to all of it extensively, I found that both the Opus 8, B Major and Opus 87, C Major, were played with jarring tempo changes, unintuitive and displeasing phrasing, and a seeming lack of interest. I am a huge fan (and player) of Brahms and these trios in particular, and it was astonishing to discover that this compilation's recordings were so lacking in feeling and grace.

Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Customer Reviews:
The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19
Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

A New Spin on Some Familiar Favorites.......2007-01-06
This disc is great! There are just not enough good comments that one can make after listening to it. All of the pieces are recognizable, except for the von Kruft, which I had never heard before listening to this album.
All the pieces are played on period instruments; because of this, the album seems to have a constant sense of warmth. This is most noticeable in the Brahms piece. There are many good modern recordings, such as the one with Tuckwell, Perlman, and Ashkenazy that should be familiar, but this one has a different feel to it. When the horn comes in in the first movement there is this sound that almost gives me chills. It is so rich and smooth and soft-probably one of the most beautful sounds that I have heard on a horn recording. The rest of the piece is utterly brilliant as all three musicians blend together well; you can hear all three parts very clearly and they do not outplay one another. There is a great cohesiveness that is found here that I do not necessarily find on the Tuckwell version mentioned above. On that version, Tuckwell seems to try to be more virtuoistic than a member of a trio. This version played by Lowell Greer is possibley the best interpretation that I have ever heard.
The Beethoven sonata is also a nice inclusion. This gives the listener a new perspective on a familiar piece. Once again, there is this warmth that comes from the horn and piano molding and blending together. With this piece, it is easy to tell how free blowing the horn is. The notes, even the ones that need to be created with the hand, seem to ring from the horn with an ease that I have not heard since Dennis Brain. The tempo taken here is just right: it is not too slow and it is not too fast. The moderate tempo is extremely evident in the third movement. Don't get me wrong, I like to hear it played at break-neck speeds that show off how fast the player can play those runs, but I do not think that that speed is correct at all. Like Cerminaro, Greer lets the notes flow for themselves. They do not seem to be forced or rushed as in the version played by Tuckwell. I like how he can play really fast, but it, I think, is not necessarily right.
The von Kruft I had never heard before this disc. It is a great piece which should played more often. It is a bit longer than the Beethoven and seems to me a bit more repetitive. I think that this is so because the von Kruft employs a longer melody that seems to be more recognizable when played again. But I do like how the piece explores the melody further than Beethoven explores his own. The von Kruft is also more showy than the Beethoven. It employs more fast runs akin to more modern horn pieces. Nonetheless, a great piece.
This CD is well worth the price that you pay for it here. I think it should be included in any horn player's collection, no matter what style or period of music they like.
Romantic Chamber Music on Period Instruments.......2006-04-14
Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897), Trio in E Flat Major for Piano, Violin and Horn, Op. 40 (written in 1865);
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827): Sonata in F Major for Horn and Piano, Op. 17 (written in 1800);
Nikolaus von Krufft (1779 – 1818): Sonata in F Major for Horn and Piano (written approx. 1800).
Performed by: Lowell Greer, natural horn; Steven Lubin, pianoforte and fortepiano; and Stephanie Chase, violin.
Recorded in December, 1990, at the State University of New York at Purchase.
Harmonia Mundi. Re-released in 2001 as HCX 3957037 as part of the Classical Express series. Total time: 64'45".
This recording brings together three American musicians whom I greatly admire, and if I award the CD four stars instead of five (as most other reviewers have done and in contrast to the enthusiastic encomiums of “Gramophone” magazine), then that should not in any way be interpreted as deprecating the amazing musicianship to be heard here. My reasons for deducting a star are firstly, that I don’t feel that either the music (in particular the Brahms, the longest piece on the disc) nor the sound of the horns used here (all French-manufactured and particularly well-suited to the repertoire) can quite match up to the sheer magnificence and beauty heard on Lowell Greer’s recording of Mozart’s Horn Concertos (ASIN: B000056F7K). Well, of course Brahms and Beethoven are not Mozart, so this is just a subjective judgement coming from someone who loves 18th century music. The second reason for awarding four stars instead of five is that the engineering, the recorded audio sound, although certainly excellent, is not quite up to the standard of many other Harmonia Mundi recordings, with a little hissing and some occasional mechanical noise on the right stereo channel interfering a little with the listening pleasure. But having said all that, this is indeed a wonderful recording. The Brahms’ piece benefits greatly from period instruments, with Steven Lubin here playing a Boesendoerfer pianoforte made around 1854 in Vienna, and I also cherished the violin playing of Stephanie Chase, particularly in the Scherzo: Allegro and the Finale: Allegro con brio. As a whole, however, the Brahms is an acquired taste, and it is perhaps symptomatic that the author of the accompanying notes quotes at length a contemporary critique in which the dark quality of Brahms’ music is lambasted and the suggestion made that Brahms ought, in fact, to have used a clarinet instead of a horn. The Beethoven and the rare von Krufft pieces (with just a historic horn and a fortepiano) were light relief in comparison, with, to my mind, the Beethoven being head and shoulders better than either of the other two pieces. But “chacun a son gout”!
A great performance............2005-11-27
The performance of the Brahms on the natural horn is astounding. Lowell Greer is a real master and he lets you hear things that are hidden when the Brahms Horn Trio is played on a modern valve horn. I will never hear this piece the same again, and I guess I will have to rethink my own future performances.
The Beethoven Sonata also gains new meaning and insights on the natural horn and is worth a listen.
The von Krufft is well played but not my cup of tea.

Dennis Brain is superb.......2005-10-03
My mother bought this CD for me because I play the French Horn. Listening to a legendary horn player like Dennis Brain is a wonderful experience. I rate this product so highly because of the fine quality of the songs on the CD. I highly recommend this product for any brass player.
As Good As It Gets!.......2004-11-15
This album and Brain's other recordings are a must for any French Horn player. His performance on this album is stunning.
The Best Recording of the Best Horn Player Ever Born.......2003-06-08
This CD is - Thank God! - a re-release of a BBC Records Recording from 1974 Titled simply, "Dennis Brain (1921-1957)". When I was a horn student in Highschool back in the 80's, my parents brought it back for me from Europe. I have been looking for this recording on CD ever since then because I completely wore the record out. It is absolutely the best horn playing you will EVER hear. I used to play the record at least ten times a day - it inspired me to practice four hours a day and to despair that I would never play half as well as this genius. It brought tears to my eyes to hear it again and to remember what it was like to fall in love with Horn music and to spend so many happy hours rejoicing in the sound this man made with this wonderful instrument. The music is completely miraculous. What a tremendous loss he was, God rest his soul.
Once again an unforgettable cd!.......2002-02-25
As with all of Brain's performances, satisfaction is guaranteed! Not to dwell on a point brought up by the other reviewers, but the Villanelle is exceptionally spectacular. Forget the fact that he missed the high C at the end, it only spotlights the fact that this was a live performance, and unedited as such. It also shows us that we are all human, and even a missed note does not detract from the glory of his musicianship and virtuosity! This album (like others) really captures the magnificence of Brain's musiciality, from his seemingly unplayable pianissimos to his flawless and perfectly clean articulations. Nothing will help you to appreciate horn music better than this cd (and the Mozart cd) and few others will have you running to the practice room quicker. A must buy for any horn student or anyone that just appreciates horn playing at its finest.
Horn's fans BUY this cd!.......2001-09-18
I think this should be an essential recording for all the horn's players or fans.
Here we have some of the most important and beautiful chamber music for horn (Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms) and one of the most exciting solo piece for horn (Dukas's Villanelle).
The star of the cd is (of course) Dennis Brain, who in my humble opinion IS the best horn player ever.
Since the legendary recording of Mozart's concerti (that every serious horn's fan should own) you can hear how the technique and the musicianship in Dennis's playing are both wonderful.
Here we have something more to prove this (if it was necessary...)
The Villanelle is outstanding, as said. The finale is rushed so fast that is almost unbelievable. The only little complaint (?) is that if I remember, he first bars are written for "hand-horn" that means to be played without using the valves but using instead the right hand in the horn's bell to perform the notes that are otherwise not possible to obtain using the lips only.
Here it seems not to be the case, but as I said it's a very little remark.
But the piece I like the most is the Mozart's quintet, that is the most difficult and virtuoso piece for horn written by the great composer. Especially in the last movement the horn has to compete in technique and articulation with the first violin, but never forgetting the elegance and grace characteristics of Mozart's music.
The second movement is, for this point of view, exemplary; each phrase is played with extraordinary musicianship and beauty.
The Beethoven quintet is maybe better here than in the other recording with Walter Gieseking and the Philarmonia winds (another essential cd for Dennis's fans) and the Brahms's trio (a wonderful piece of music) shows as Dennis was perfectly suited even with a romantic piece like this (he was somehow "accused" to be without nerves...).
In conclusion, I think that after purchasing the Mozart's concerti, this should be your next horn's cd.

Classic Chamber Music with Clarinet.......2003-05-23
I have often thought that if I took up a wind instrument, it would be the clarinet. It is possibly the most perfectly constructed and smoothly functioning of all the wind instruments. It has an almost four-octave range (by virtue of it being overblown at the twelfth, not the octave like all the other orchestral winds), a very wide dynamic range from the merest whisper to a clarion tone (in fact, the term 'clarion' and the term 'clarinet' come from the same root), incredible flexibility (closest of any wind to that of the violin), mimics the human voice in its range and sound and, finally, has the smoothest most ingratiating tone (as Mike Myers's 'Linda Richman' would say, 'Like buttah!'). [Please don't be mad at me, all you oboists, bassoonists and flutists out there!]
Here we have core clarinet chamber music repertoire:
Beethoven: Trio in B flat, Op. 11
Brahms: Trio in A minor, Op. 114
Berg: Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 5
Mendelssohn: Konzertstücke 1 & 2 for Clarinet, Basset-Horn and Piano, Opp. 113 & 114
The clarinetist is one of the best - Peter Schmidl, principal clarinet of the Vienna Philharmonic. His colleagues - Madoka Inui, piano; Teodora Mileva, cello; and Pierre Pichler, basset-horn, are fully his equals. The playing is suave, the ensemble tightly coordinated and the recorded sound clear and life-like. This is 68 minutes of unalloyed beauty. Naxos has come up with another winner.
The jewel box liner and booklet have the designation 'Philharmonic Soloists' emblazoned on them. Can we hope that various other of the Vienna Philharmonic's principals will have similar discs in the future?
Recommended.

Chamber music at its best.......2003-05-22
The sound of Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has committed me like a guardian angel since I was a little child. Listening with my parents to the radio transmissions of Salzburg Festival (we were positively unable to buy tickets) I got my first idea of a better world. Now listening to the first CD of a new edition with soloists of VPO, I felt the same calm euphory. Peter Schmidl, VPO's first clarinet, has taught two generations of young musicians. His recording of Mozart's clarinet concert under Leonard Bernstein has become part of musical history. On this CD he performs with brilliant young partners chamber music by Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Alban Berg. Warmth and sensuality of his tone are unbeatable even by other world champions like Meyer, de Payer or Leister. The piano part is admirably played by Madoka Inui - brilliance, elegance and intellectual analysis of her interpretaion are first class. So: Who ever calls himself a clarinet maniac - and this is not difficult, because no other wind instrument is closer to human voice - should listen into that recording. The price is a sensation and the booklet, written by Schmidl himself, too. Chamber music at its best.

Customer Reviews:
A long overdue collection by one of the English masters of the clarinet........2007-01-05
The Yorkshireman Reg Kell became famous for using vibrato in the classical world when it was unfashionable. He used it tastefully, and other artists such as Jack Brymer and Emma Johnson have continued to use it. He also had a series of tutorials with Benny Goodman (for Goodman's benefit) which led to Goodman changing his embouchure from the upper teeth on mouthpiece to the upper lip - as well as lower, -on mouthpiece, which perhaps in Goodmans's case was not a good move, as he had it right the first time!.
However these recordings originally came out a very long time ago in the early days of vinyl, and a re-issue is long overdue. Kell's excursion in to light music is interesting, though he stops well short of anything resembling jazz, although he had earlier recorded one record with Bert Ambrose's band in the 1940 which was the nearest he got, - but that is not included here. His main forte is in the works of Mozart, Weber, Beethoven and Brahms, but he also plays Bartok and Templeton. It shows what an accomplished performer he was. All were recorded after he left the UK to live and play in America.
This set shows his rightful place as a performer in the history of clarinet playing. He had raised the standard of the time, and had the benefits of improved recording techniques and length of play boudaries were removed with the LP record.
Great Collection.......2006-07-30
My only negative comment is that he rushes some of the runs; everything else is great!
